Please help a novice out
Submitted by KevHuntley on Thu, 2014-04-17 20:45Hi everyone , I've just recently bought couple of rods , little one for catching livies and a bigger one for slinging the livies out ... I need help in identifying which fish to use as live , what size is good , and how to hook them up eg. Single hook through jaws , spine , tail ? Gang Hooke etc .. Also whats the best way to fish with livies from land like e sheds , rock piers , jettys etc I have been sinking them with a good bit trace on with no luck and I've seen lads ballooning etc , any tips ? Cheers everyone that assists .. Got a pic of what I normally catch on the bait chasing rig just after confirmation if they're good for live

Fish ID - Perth Metro Emperor???
Submitted by Mick C on Mon, 2014-04-14 18:33Picked this one up off 3 Mile Reef on a floating bait in a burley trail. It seems to have all the characteristics of an emperor but I am no identification expert (it may not even be an emperor). I must say it looked like a spangled when it came up but in the photo it looks more like a blue lined (sorry about the photo quality and I should have taken one when it was landed). From looking at the ID descriptions, if it is an emperor it seems a long way south. It was a decent fish at 424mm though. Would be interested in a veiw on what species it is.

Fish ID please
Submitted by Alan James on Wed, 2014-03-26 14:22Caught this on Monday in 350m plus. I'm thinking it is a Barracouta or Black Snoek or Snake Mackeral. The pic is quite deceiving in that it was very dark coloured bordering on black on its back. Fish was very slender and although it appeared something had had a go at it, it did swim away OK.

Garden island Fish ID please?
Submitted by avago on Mon, 2014-01-27 10:31Hi,
this was caught just other side of garden island, i thought this was a buff bream at first but it didnt seem right, and you cant really make out in the photo but it had really vivid yellow lips.
It went back of course but after searching online and various books I am at a loss as to what it is.
Any help much appreciated, Thanks!

Strange one from the deep today?
Submitted by southcity104 on Sat, 2014-01-18 19:21Got stuck into some blue eye trevalla today and noticed one of them was noticably different.
The above fish is a trevalla
The fish below looks similar but the mouth is quite different. Was much narrower in the body and scales were much smoother.
Male and female maybe?
could be one for Glen moore?

Fish ID please
Submitted by Cruise Control on Mon, 2014-01-13 10:33Caught a couple of these over Xmas. Picked up in 40M north of Rotto and off Ocean Reef. Originally called them for Gummy Sharks but the very small teeth (you can see them if you zoom in) and blotches down the sides were un Gummy like. Flesh was white and filleted up OK and ate quite well.

Fish ID near hillarys
Submitted by br3nno on Thu, 2013-11-28 17:54I saw this near one of the reefs at hillarys through the sea scope, so i got out my gopro.
There isnt much to go on so its going to be a guessing game.. Much clearer through sea scope, wide lense is misleading was approx 55 - 60cm.
Kinda looked like a large skippy but also like a YTK, what do you think?

unusual Fish Confirm ID
Submitted by Habanero on Thu, 2013-11-14 14:41I think this is a Black Snoek , was caught on bait at night in 200m on last trip to Fiji , fought all the way to the surface , had an unusual bone structure just under the skin all along the side , I did keep the Head/Jaw in the freezer to dry out , but the Fijians found it and ate it! . It had 3 long pink teeth set into the front of the mouth , was approx 2m in length.
Has anyone ever encountered them before? if so where and is it a Black Snoek?
