Fish ID please

Caught a couple of these over Xmas. Picked up in 40M north of Rotto and off Ocean Reef. Originally called them for Gummy Sharks but the very small teeth (you can see them if you zoom in) and blotches down the sides were un Gummy like. Flesh was white and filleted up OK and ate quite well.

Whiskery shark. Very closely related to the gummy I believe. Meant to be tops to eat. I caught one a while ago and released it because I couldn't identify it...

Whiskery

Whiskery shark
Cutting the fins off has no effect on stopping the ammonia smell going through the flesh. You have to gut it and get the brown strip along the spine out asap, the longer you leave it the stronger the smell. While cleaning it make sure you flush out the tube that runs from the back of the gut cavity trough to the tail, stale blood left in there can contaminate the flesh in no time as well.

Tail cutting and keeping knife sharp

Mon, 2014-01-13 13:08

Cutting the tail off is a good trick -----on someone else's boat because its like a water pistol and sprays everywhere.
If you clean them straight away theres no need to cut the tail off while its still alive.'

The trick to keeping your knife sharp is to cut from the inside of the skin, not trying to saw through from the outside. Slide the point of the knife under the skin, that way there is only a small portion of the edge coming in contact with it. Small trick of the trade that you learn after having to clean and de-bone thousands of them.

+ 1 on cutting/skinning from inside out that trick halved the time it takes me to clean a wobby now.

Thanks for the lesson

Many thanks for the lesson on how to handle whiskery sharks, that's one of the things I really like about this site members are always willing to share their knowledge about fishing skills with others. I've never caught a whiskery shark so I would more than likely ended up with a very messy boat to clean up.
