Shark ID
Submitted by 420casts on Mon, 2017-04-10 13:03 Mate got this ages ago in Cockburn, reckons it's a Blacktip - I'm just seeking confirmation / correction as I got no idea what it is and I was under the impression those species are more north. Cheers

Fish ID help
Submitted by steve434 on Thu, 2016-10-27 17:11Hello,
The answer is probably obvious but its got me stumped. I caught this bugger today in a channel inshore in Carnarvon, i thought at the time it was a bream but when i got back home I'm starting to question what it is. I'm starting to think juvenile mulloway but i'm just not sure, any help would be appreciated

crustacean confusion!?!
Submitted by turtl3tim on Sun, 2016-08-07 00:59hi all, i was walking around my 'secret' pond hunting some noxious carp. i say 'secret' because i only saw them for the first time on my 100th walk around this local pond, and i didnt want every man and their dog knocking elbows with me tryna catch a CARP of all things!. i know theyre a pest and i should probably share the location with every single fisherman in Australia, but if i did that...id have nothing to do on sundays within a month. OH! and my wife insisted we save the "pretty gold ones"...which resulted in me having to tear up part of my beloved lawn to install a freaking fibreglass puddle to fill with fish.
ANYWAY, long story short. on my night time round, i noticed some pretty little red eyes shining in my light amongst the tree roots. i managed to pluck 2 of these fellas outa the water, and to my surprise they seem to be completely different species!. Now, Im 100% positive neither of them are marron!, and they aint yabbies either. im thinking one is a gilgie and the other is a koonac? any thoughts??? i literally caught these guys within 5 feet of each other.
what i think is the gilgie (admittedly i got a bit overexcited in my effort to catch this one. she unfortunately acquired a battle scar from the stick i used to trap her with...and the she dropped a claw :(. on the + side, she took off like a rocket when she went back in the water) the flash had a bit of an impact on the colours, but as u can see it has a definate 'pinstripe' down the back and sides (sides are hard to see in pic) she also had long skinny claws, it was a combination of that and the light brown colour which pointed me to gilgie
This is what i think is the koonac. very dark in colour (almost black) and very wide claws.
i did google and check the fisheries site, but its too hard to tell! the were both roughly the same size at 120-130mm.
any input would be great.
i really didnt expect to find these guys in the same pond as carp, longneck turtles...and ibis'

Oddball Wrasse
Submitted by ranmar850 on Mon, 2016-07-25 17:02This litlle fella turned up twice when I was catching gar off the beach at Winderabandi Point recently. They actually seem to live in the sand--when released they just disappear into the sand at my feet. One actually had me bricked briefly--I had to pull him out of the sand. Tail cannot be seen in pic but is very similar to Black-spot tusk.

Got me stumped
Submitted by Belly Fish on Mon, 2016-06-20 22:59Hi,
Was sent this photo to identify, but it has me stumped.
Apparently caught by a diver off Mindarie.
Looks like a cross between a Breaksea Cod and a Coral Trout.
Any clues out there?

Crab ID
Submitted by 420casts on Sat, 2016-01-30 23:31 Was down at South Mole this evening and I was mucking around catching rock crabs after a lack of nibbles and I caught this robust looking fellow. What type is it ? Looks mud-crab ish to me, but I am told by everyone it's not possible.
Also there were many of these pink coloured crabs on the rocks underwater. Never seen either before. Only got the photos of the one. Released him immediately.

ID Please
Submitted by Madmerv on Wed, 2015-12-23 03:58Went out from Mindarie to the 40"s for a nice day on the water.
First drop of the day i rigged up a nice whiting on a 1 1/2 oz jig head and sent it south. Not long and i get a good pickup with a decent fish on. Put in some effort and get him up about 10m so pretty safe from the reefs when my nice fish decides that he must be heading in the wrong direction and he just takes off. Bloody thing just smokes my stradic, i see the backing and stop thumbing it to grab the spool, just a bit too late as i went to backing and as i really apply the brakes the line breakes at the join..:( Braid gone.
Fish fought like a sambo and if it was it would have been a PB by the feel, but not seen so lesson learned. Dont wait so long to lock up the spool.
Day ended up with a little Dhu (plenty of undersize) 2 baldies and a monster blackass.
And this strange looker below that i called as a buff but was confused because of the color and markings. What do you guys recon??
