Fish Identification
Mackerel ID
Submitted by Mick C on Thu, 2025-02-06 15:42Have received a few conflicting opinions about what species this is. Any comments welcome.
Caught in 6m of water just out of Hillarys. It was released as we had our demersal bag, and plenty of whiting (sand & KG).

Swan River by catch - 6cm fish id
Submitted by Gezzza on Sat, 2024-06-08 13:30Found this in the prawn net when cleaning up today.
Must have been in some weed.
They are spines on each side of the mouth.
The skin has slime like a Red Scorpion Cod
Im thinking it might be in this Family of Fishes.
Common name: Family TETRAROGIDAE - Fortesques, Sailback Scorpionfishes, Wasp Fishes
https://fishesofaustralia.net.au/Home/family/263
I have it frozen in a block of river water if it is of any interest to Glenn at WA Museum.
We got another 6 tonight but they all went back and they were all on clumps of weed on a run out tide.

Gar fish?
Submitted by tcarroll on Wed, 2023-08-23 08:58Was over on the west side (Exmouth) swimming with the family the other day and an old couple next to us were slaying what looked like gar fish, but from a distance the fish looked to have black bars/splodges on their side. Anybody know what type of gars these are? Went through the Fish ID page but couldn't find them.

Deep drop fish id
Submitted by BigbadDhu on Wed, 2021-09-22 13:32G'day guys
Went deep dropping yesterday afternoon/night ended up with some greyband and nanny's, nothing to write home about
But caught this little fella, hadn't seen one before and not sure what he is. About 25cm long, came up from 280m.
He was buggered from the depth. Interested to know what he is.
Cheers

Fish Id please
Submitted by still trying on Mon, 2020-07-20 13:09Hi guys caught this fish on Sunday night between Garden and Carnac Island while chasing snapper was released straight after photo. No snapper again got the usual run right on sunset but no hook up, becoming a repetitive occurance. Plenty of squid attacking my baits brought home afew could have taken heaps.

Greyband vs Eight Bar cod, Ningaloo region.
Submitted by ranmar850 on Fri, 2020-07-03 08:42re the topic this came from, where you said you were interested in the greyband----Has the interest come about after Jarrad Oxley of YBS fame submitted the tissue sample and otoliths from the one they caught in the video? I caught one last year north of Winderabandi point on Ningaloo station from 280m that bottomed 23kg scales. I laughed when they did the cook'n'catch segment...wait for it..." a bit chewy". just as ours was, but not wasted, curries, etc. I have been in a debate with a gentleman of Queensland origin who reckons the 8-bar and the greybar are one and the same fish, just showing bars under stress. I have caught both , I don't agree with him. This is an 8 bar I caught this year, largest of several, bottoming 23kg scales.
# came up at once, other two were smaller, all showed bars. Bars are clearly visible , even after death. Dorsal spine count is 11, spines on pre-operculum may differ to what was called a geyband last year, aka the Dad-Bod Cod . Below is my Greyband from last year--only bars you can see are shadowns form the rocket launcher.
Another smaller greyband from this year. No barring shown at any stage
To finish it off, what is this bloke? Blunt-headed cod, according to the old Hutchins/Swainston book on the North west? Distinctive orange colouration under the chin/gill area, distinctive yellow patch either side of the mouth. came from 140m.

Wrasse?
Submitted by Striker101 on Sun, 2020-03-22 19:47Hi everyone just wanted to confirm these fish are wrasse ?
Caught them near garden island not to far from the herring bay entrance markers... Released them back as I hear they are just average/poor eating. and wasn't 100% sure they were wrasse. I can't seem to catch anything in the sound apart from butterfish , trumpeter, wrasse. And undersized pink snapper that have to be released. I'm just using occy for bait sometimes Mullies but they just normally get picked of the hook! Maybe I'm fishing to shallow ? When I pick a spot deeper I don't get any bites. Hopefully my day will come when I can have a display picture as a big catch instead of a nice sunset. Oh and the smaller fish in the picture. It looks like a butterfish or trumpeter but it's more like a spotted pattern instead of straight lines down its hole body hmmm

What fish is this?
Submitted by clayd on Mon, 2019-05-13 21:12Back in Perth a few weeks after spending Easter in Exmouth with the family. Came across a fish I haven’t been able to ID. You’ll see it around 2:33 in the video. youtu.be/xZmkMhJCGQ4
Thought something related to Long Tom, but the tail is really long and thin. They were approx 40-60cm long. Thinking they must be pretty common as they were in a school and I spotted a few loners elsewhere a couple times. Was also interesting how they just pointed into the current.
Help me out, because this is driving me crazy.

Gnaraloo Snapper
Submitted by aussiejoe on Mon, 2019-04-29 18:24Spent the week leading up to Easter at Gnaraloo. The weather was not great and we were mostly resticted to fishing inshore. The swell was up and the water was little dirty. Plenty of Yellowfin and some Shark Mackerel around but only managed four Spanish Mackerel in the week. We did get out deeper and fished the 60 to 70 meter area on one day and got a mixed bag of fish including the the "Snapper" pictured below.
D is a redthroat and C may be a "Darktailed Snapper" (Lutjanus Lemniscatus) going by the darker tail and shallow sloped forehead. I thought B may be a Mangrove Jack but it has a slightly forked tail and the pictues of Mangrove Jack I found all have a truncate tail. No idea of what A is. Your thoughts please.
