Yellowtails all 68 of them!!
Submitted by rainbow on Tue, 2008-11-25 18:54Still being in Vic ( worse luck) I looked up Yellowtail to see if it was a WA name for a well known fish aussie wide , but according to the free encyclopedia wikepedia there are 68 species of yellowtail fish. So what are the ones you refer to in the Perth region, how big do they grow & are they edible?

Eel
Submitted by mt-ed on Wed, 2008-11-19 20:32No pictures of it,
I was out fishing at Two Rocks the other evening, just caught a few Tailor and smallish Herring when I decide to pack up for the night.
Now I don't take the remnants of my bait home, I just feed it to the seagulls or drop into the side to feed the crabs and prawns.
Well this time, the rods are packed away, bag packed and I am dropping the last of ten Mulies in the side and watching the prawns swarming around when up pops this humungous Eel.
It was at least 3ft long and it just saunters up, picks up a mulie and then back down it goes again.
Just wondering what type of Eel are in WA and if they are catchable?
I know that back in the UK, Eels fight like hell for the size of them and I for one would,ve liked that on the end of my line.
Couldn,t make out any colour on it ,it just seemed to be a browney/grey colour and as thick as my wrist. ( And my wrist has had plenty of action over the years)
Hey, I'm a plumber and the pipe cutters are used with a wrist action

fish ID
Submitted by schecky on Wed, 2008-11-05 19:03I will probably make myself look stupid asking this because it will turn out to be obvious haha but i know the second one is a type of cod or something but the first one i have no clue but caught millions of them, so some identification would be helpful.
They were both caught off broome jetty in July this year.

Im stumped...
Submitted by Shortly on Thu, 2008-05-29 19:57Caught this fish out at Hillarys tonight, I thought it was a juvenile Nannygai, but when I looked it up, the dorsal fins were different.
So, does anyone have any idea what sort of fish this is. It was a deeper red/orange colour to start with, but unfortunately it was gut hooked and died and the colour has faded.

Fishwreckapedia - Baldchin Groper
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2008-03-20 10:52G'day guys,
Here is the fourth species on the fishwreckapedia fish species identification list. I want you guys to add anything you know about the species, in terms of habitat, depth, movements over times of the year, prefered catch methods - rigs/baits, legal size limit - bag limit, eating quality etc.
Please try and add things which haven't been posted before, when the discussion has covered most of the information I will place it into a new area on the site where we will build upon a database of fish species for identification and general use. I will also attach photos to help with the identification, if you have any really good ones without an angler in the photo, please submit them, or email them to me at:

Mangrove Jack or Red Bass
Submitted by PACEMAKER on Mon, 2008-03-03 19:59Hello people, can anyone tell me if a Red Bass has teeth? Lately I have been catching alot of what appears to be mangrove Jack with the nasty looking teeth. The great book says that the two can be mixed up rather easily and in the pics they show them both and the Red Bass has no teeth. I went out for a fish today out around Rotto way and caught what appears to be Mangrove Jack at a tad over 40cm. Is it possible that they are moving southward from their normal temp waters??
Any info would be great
Cheers
Terry
