is it a grunter?
Submitted by djsmum on Sat, 2010-01-23 17:27
Using a freshwater prawn caught in the shallow with a net by 5 yr old. We didn't expect to pull anything out of the water as we didn't have much with us just the telescopic rod and I honestly thought the hook was too big to pull anything up.
Its not bream is it, is this what they call a grunter? The spines on his back looked a bit nasty, was reluctant to let 5 yr old take the hook out of him. We put him back because he was small, but there were quite a few schooling...also silver flashes in the water which I thought might be bream but not sure.
We were down at kent st weir.
not sure if the photo is going to upload but will try anyway.

Help to ID fish
Submitted by vickirayner on Wed, 2010-01-20 12:44On Sunday I was fishing about 25km from Bunbury and caught a very strange fish. I do not have a photo of this fish but will try to describe it so someone can tell me what it might be!
It was about 40cm long (I jagged it through its side) orange in colour with "wings" that were blue on the edges, green in the middle and each "wing" had a big black dot on it. It also had 4 "feelers" on both undersides of its body, which I can only describe as looking a bit like crayfish legs.
Any ideas?

My rod is under tha tree
Submitted by Trousersnake on Sun, 2009-12-20 16:14Hey I'm about to begin fishing in W.A waters mostly off of Quinns Rocks beaches up to Two Rocks. My rod is awaiting me under tha xmas tree. I have no idea about identifying different species of fish and I am looking for a user friendly W.A species book so that I can tell what is what and more importantly what I can eat. I am going to head out boxing day morning hopefully aiming for Whiting to start with. Any info will be much appreciated.
Catch ya on tha flip side
Peace

The mouth makes me think some kind of morwong? The fins are wrong for a blue morwong.

Scalyfin
Submitted by Sekans on Wed, 2009-04-15 11:15Fishing near carnac on the weekend I caught a fish which after a bit of research (found the pics on:http://school.maths.uwa.edu.au/homepages/adrian/scuba/rotto.html) I think was a scalyfin. I chucked the fish back, although for next time, i'm wondering if you can you eat them?

Caught off Busselton, Barracuda or Snook?
Submitted by dava on Mon, 2009-03-30 21:27Hey all,
This was caught by my girlfriends dad last weekend off a boat in Geographe Bay, Busselton.
I reckon it's a barracuda, he reckons it's a snook.
Can anyone settle this argument?
Cheers,
Daniel

Swan River Fish ID Required
Submitted by Chook Gut on Mon, 2009-02-02 10:09Unfortunately I do not have a Pic, but whilst fishing for bream from a kayak around Belmont/Ascot area I hooked up quite a few small fish ranging from 10 - 23cm, look like a trumpeter?
Distinguish markings: Two black spots on tail fin, looks like five finger marks along back, motley brown colour with faint brownie strips around nose, white belly. They love prawn but not squid strips.
The next day I saw them cruising up and down the river with the bream in the shallows. I can not find them in any ID correspondence.
