Salmon/Tailor
Submitted by emem on Thu, 2016-06-09 08:07Have fished same spot in Mandurah for a few years now. Have enjoyed regular success with Tailor catches until Salmon presence over the past two seasons. Tailor catches down significantly in this time and am thinking Salmon may be impacting the Tailor Catch.
Anyone else experiencing similar?

Moving to Sunshine Coast.
Submitted by Mapparatta on Sat, 2016-05-28 11:52Hei guys, how is it going?
I m moving in a few weeks to Sunshine Coast precisely in Mooloolaba.
I need just some advice about good spots.
I m a shark hunter (catch and release) but i know there is a net in front of the cost.
Someone of you know some good spot for a nice fight around there, spinning, surf casting, anything can give me a good catch.
Thanks everybody.

New Surf Combo
Submitted by devhay on Mon, 2016-05-23 12:19Well I've decided its finally time to upgrade the simple but faithful old fibreglass jarvis walker and spinfisher combo to something a bit more modern and lighter with a bit more power
I'm after a 12ft rod around 8-15kg probably matched up with an 8k Baitrunner D, and hoping to keep the combo under/around the $500 mark
Mostly casting baits for tailor, snapper and while i'm dreaming hopefully mulloway haha so I don't think the cast weight will need to be too massive, but I'd still like it to have a little extra power for anything bigger that may swim passed
So far I've had myself set on the Penn Prevail, but after a trip to the shop the Samaki Zing Surf and the Assassin Amia stick out too.. they just bump the budget a bit too far
Are there any others I'm overlooking or does anyone have any reccomendations?
I'll also be after a quality mono to spool it too, generally go for the Berkley Big Game, are there any others I should check out?
Cheers

Salmon At The Moles
Submitted by Apelli on Sun, 2016-05-01 21:49Hi all, I was planning on trying to catch my first salmon tomorrow and was going to head down to one of the moles to try, but I havent seen any posts of salmon being caught around the moles recently on the salmon tracker page or anything else. So I was wondering if it is still possible to catch them around the moles or have they moved on too different parts.

Swanbourne Drain
Submitted by sonoftherock on Wed, 2016-04-27 22:29I've fished this area a few times recently, without much luck. Mainly I feel, on account of the weed situation.
Is the weed a seasonal phenomenon round this area? Or does it just flare-up occassionally? Would be interested if anyone could share their thoughts on the drivers behind weed accumulation on our beaches... really frustrating when you've made the long trek out to Swanbourne drain!
Any other tips on fishing the drain would also be gratefully received!

Where to go fishing?
Submitted by Rets on Thu, 2016-04-21 00:23I am planning to take a little bit of a drive this weekend to hopefully get some decent fishing, as the moles and harbour walls haven't been producing for us, even after spending dozens upon dozens of hours trying to get a good fish with nothing. So I was just wondering what a good spot would be, that is around an hour drive away from the city. We were thinking of driving down to dawesville cut, or maybe drive up to guilderton, but we're not sure if those spots are the best.
Any suggestions as of where to go?
Cheers

North Mole
Submitted by Rets on Thu, 2016-04-21 00:20Went fishing at the north mole last night, had several livies out, and also used whole occie and mullies.
Didn't get anything on the big rods, but I caught a 31cm snook, several small pinkies, a few tarwhine, and a couple of good sized butterfish. The butterfish and snook would of made a good feed, but we used the snook and butterfish as livies.
We also burley'd up heaps, and had a pretty decent amount of herring swimming around in front of us, didn't manage to catch any though.

Dongara/Port Denison fishing trip
Submitted by Rets on Fri, 2016-04-08 19:29G'day,
I just got back from a 4 day fishing trip to Dongara/Port Denison and I'd just like to give you guys a little report of what it was like.
The first night down there we were fishing off of Port Denison Marina's north wall (sea side); about 50 meters left of the jetty. We had two rods set up for livies, and two more rods that we were using to catch the livies. We found that the best way to catch livies was to cut up pilchards into cubs and just whack them onto hooks and then reel in very slowly. We got 3 or 4 good sized snook, 2 small tailor, a herring, a few whiting, and aroud 20 juvenile Mulloway. We used the herring and the whiting as livies, and they worked well. Every time we chucked them out, we'd reel them in an hour later to find that they had their whole bodies bitten off which just left their heads, so obviously we had to add another assist hook to hook whatever was doing that, but we decided to leave that until the next night. At the end of that night we didn't bring anything home, but we had a lot of fun catching all of the tailor, snook, mulloway, herring and whiting.
On the second day we decided to go down to the jetty right infront of the crayfish factory and see what we could catch. We put the smallest hooks we could find on, and used small bits of squid. We caught several small pink snapper, several of which were nearly as small as 20 cent pieces, and I managed to catch a 20ishCM mulloway and a yellowtail scad.
The second night we decided to go to the same spot, but this time we had our rigs set up with assist hooks to catch whatever we were missing the other nights. This night was the same as the first; herring, juvenile mulloway, whiting, snook and tailor. About an hour after dark we had a big run which eventually snapper our line, it was one of the infamous 'bonet sized stingrays' of Port Denison marina (we knew because it was doing the classic stop start which all rays do). Because of only getting 6 or so hours sleep the night before, I was super tired. I ended up falling asleep on the rocks, and only woke up when my rod went off screaming, but sadly I woke up too late as whatever was on the other end of the line already had the time to run for ages and ended up busting me off. We left after that and as you'd imagine, we were super bumbed out about that.
The third day we decided to try our luck during the day by sending a baloon out to the edge of the reef in front of the south marina wall. After about 20 minutes of the baloon being out, we had something hit the bait and thrash around a little bit before cutting our leader, so we set the rig back up with some wire leader and tried again. It only took about 30 minutes after getting the baloon out again before getting a massive run, but sadly I had a lure out trying to get some herring, and my Dad was setting up another rig, so we got to the rod only after whatever had taken the bait had gotten back to the reef and busted us off. I ended up getting a couple herring though, which both managed to shake the hook as I was picking them up out of the water.
That night we decided to try our luck on the south wall again, but this time we walked about another 100 meters down so we didn't have the reef right in front of us. After a couple hours and not even a single bite, we decided that we should move somewhere else. We decided to go to Seaspray Beach since we had heard so many stories about how good it was supposed to be. We got to the beach, and got nothing for a few hours. I eventually got a whiting that I put out on my rod as a livie, and my Dad got a 37cm Mulloway, which was our PB for the trip so far. We spent another hour or so with no results, and decided to call it a night, but as I was reeling in my rod, I had a big hit, so I thought that I had gotten a tailor or something, but after no fight and just a bunch of weight, I pulled up a 1 meter Port Jackson shark, which was cool because it was the biggest fish I had ever caught. We got a few photos of that and called it a night.
On the 4th day, I decided to grab a rod and try to land my first fish on a lure (because the herring I got the day before I didn't land, so I didn't count either of them as my first fish caught on my lure). I went down to the jetty on the marina's north wall and decided to start casting a soft plastic lure. On the very first cast, I had a massive North-west blowie come in and devour it. I dragged him around the jetty and attempted to pull it up on the rocks, at which point my line snapped and it swam off with my lure and all still in it's mouth. I decided to count that as my first fish on a lure.
On the 4th night I came on here, and read up on what the best spots in Port Denison were supposed to be, and I saw a post that said that 10-20meters from the end of the north wall was supposed to be the best spots, so we decided to try that.
Withing an hour of being out there, we thought this was going to be the night that we got our massive mulloway, we put out whole mullet this time as we couldn't catch any suitable livies, and it looked like the whole mullet was the way to go at first because we had several short runs which looked like it was a mulloway doing its thing and being very docile as they are, but after about 10 short runs and no big run, we decided to bring the bait back in and got snagged. We think that it may of been a big crab or maybe an octopus that was dragging the mullet into it's den or something. But like every other night, we caught tonnes of juvenile mulloway (probably around 20 for this night alone), including the trips best mulloway which measured in at 39.5cm. We also caught a single small gold-spotted sweetlips.
We left Dogara with no fish, but regardless it was still a very fun trip. The weather wasn't the greatest, and we heard that the best times to go fishing there are from October to Feburary, so we were a bit late. But still, the juvenile mulloway are there in plague proportions, so at least we know that the next generation of Mulloway are safe and sound at Dongara!
Cheers.
TL;DR Lots of tailor, snook, herring, a few bits and peices and heaps of juvenile mulloway. Didn't catch anything massive because they busted us off every time.
(Sorry for the massive wall of text, I wanted to go in as much detail as possible)

Steep point trip
Submitted by bitten on Thu, 2016-04-07 12:56i havn't posted on here for a while now but we had such a good time i thought this one was worthy of sharing.
headed up to steep point at the beginning of march after everyone bar me had pulled out of the trip had to ring around to find some last minute mates to join me. 4 of us made the trip up the 3 guys that came with were all steep point virgins so they were all champing at the bit to get there. the day we arrived the fishing was hot but the cliffs were full and was difficult to get a spot to spin let alone balloon. we only managed to get one fish between us for the day caught on a $60 20lb jarvis walker outfit with no wire of all things.
the fishing slowed down a lot after that with a short early morning bitemost mornings and only the odd fish throughout the day. hooked myself a moster shark that took 300m of line along with 7 or 8 balloons before i could snap hm off. plenty of big snapper were caught at night and the odd baldie from the western side of the point. hooked a 6 foot hammer on the balloon gear and fought him all the way to the rocks only to have an enourmous shark comefrom nowhere to take him behind the head in one bite. it was prety amazing for evryone to witness even the most experienced of fisherman rarely see somthing like that happen.
while we diidnt exactly fill the freezer we all took home a prety good feed of fish, drank plenty of piss and had a ball, its deffinatly my favourite destination on this earth just for the sheer beuty and rawness of the place, ive never felt so small and insignificant as when we were standing on the edge of the cliff on the western side watching the swell smashing the coastline. cant wait for next year!!
serious lack of photos ecpecially of the snapper its not always viable to running off for a camera when the fish are on the chew haha

1 week - where should we go??
Submitted by Ben01 on Sun, 2016-04-03 16:55Hi all,
Got 2 weeks off early May and would like to take the family away for one week somewhere where we can do some decent land based fishing.
Kalbarri is an option although we have been 3 times in last 2 years and wouldn't mind trying somewhere different for the kids. It's hard to beat Kalbarri because fish are pretty much guaranteed and my kids love catching the little bream and whiting in the river.
I have a 4x4 but would prefer not an exclusively 4x4 location. Also would prefer north so weather is warmer and swimming is a possibility. So, who's got some ideas?

Rottnest Land based
Submitted by Karak on Tue, 2016-03-29 19:04Hi all,
I just had my first taste of fishing land based at Rotto.
Caught about 3 tailors and 1 herring, of size, Northern Beaches.
Has anyone fish out near West End? and Fishing the round tip between Eagle bay and Mabel Cove and Marjorie Bay due to the South easterly winds?
Do I need to bring a gaff? Especially for West End, what type of PFD do you recommend? Is it best to get from BCF? I am open to other suggestions for PFD.
Are we allowed to use rope ourselves to an attachement near the rocks? Wished there were some thing in place such as the salmon holes.
Regarding setup, I have a Pirate Lateo Surf Rod -15-20kg, rating 15kg braid with fluoro 20kg leader on Sustain 5000. Is that overkill or needs tweaking?
For those hunting YTKs or Samson, what type of containment unit do you use? is a Bucket Sufficient or a trolley?
Be using Daiwa Stickbaits for the occasion.
Thank you.

White Hills 4X4
Submitted by Coben13 on Sun, 2016-03-20 09:07Hi People, Just got back from White Hills fishing. Stayed overnight and had a great night fishing and havind a beer.
Could not believe the amount of 4X4 drivers going into the dunes and wrecking the vegetation.
Coming back in the morning was surprised by the tracks going straight past the "No 4X4's allowed in the dunes" signs. Then on the way back picked up some rubbish that so called fishermen left on the beach.
I can see it won't be long before every beach around the South West will be blocked and banned to the public as it is round a lot of the lower South West already. I love beach fishing and hate the fact that people will completely disregard all requests by Parks and Wildlife, to keep our coast clean and open to the public.
Please if you are going onto the beaches, keep the place clean and stay on the beach so the Government has no excuse to keep us from enjoying the great lifestyle we enjoy here.
Cheers Geoff

Weed along Northern coastline
Submitted by fptmanager on Fri, 2016-03-04 19:43Hi guys
Pretty new to Aus and been fishing the northern beaches in the Mindarie area a few times a week, with some good produce of tailor. I've noticed that the SW and Westerly winds bring the weed. It's been very challenging this week. The wind seems to change direction to Easterly around midnight. Has anyone noticed the same with the westerly bringing the weed? Is it safe to say that a few hours of easterly will blow the weed away from the coastline? Having some serious withdrawals from fishing here lol!

LBG overhead rod suggestions please?
Submitted by collie005 on Wed, 2016-03-02 22:07Can anyone please suggest a good overhead LBG fishing rod for me? Something that will be suitable for fishing at Quobba and also for chasing small to med metro sharks off the beach. I will be using it for balooning and also beach casting.
- I am probably looking for something 15-24Kg
- Will be matched with a Shimano Tyrnos 30-2 reel
- Something with a bit of length (8 foot+) to get up and over the rocks/swell...
- 2 piece would be ideal
- I do like Shimano stuff but would consider any brand
- Looking to spend around $200-250
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Recommend Landbased Location
Submitted by tainted on Sat, 2016-02-27 18:51Hey People,
Short story is somehow myself and a couple of mates have managed to align FIFO rosters, shift work, kids, wifes etc and have next Saturday night completely free. We can leave Perth northern suburbs by about 2pm and have to be back by 1pm on the Sunday. What I'm asking is for suggestions as to where we might be able to head. At this stage we were thinking somewhere between Two Rocks and Wedge with the chance to get to the beach and have the first bait in the water before sundown.
I know it will be a long weekend, so crowds being likely we are happy to head to more out of the way places like around ledge or seabird. Has anyone got any info that might help like current conditions of the beaches, weed, exposed reef, etc?
Thanks in advance,
Brad

Salting Surf Rod Spin or overhead?
Submitted by Beard_Slob on Tue, 2016-02-16 19:09I Have owned and used a Saltiga Ballistic surf Rod for some time now,
However I have since put it aside due to the high mount of the reel seat and find myself reaching for my every reliable SU450 with low mount. Looking into the specs of the ballistic surf it says it can be used with spin or overhead, has anybody used it as an overhead if so would the long but section make it quite difficult to cast overhead? I was also thinking that if it were ok for an overhead reel that it may be a good stick for ballooining off the beach?

Looking for Albany river tips
Submitted by Jimmy441 on Wed, 2016-02-10 22:41Hey guys,
Just moved to Albany and I'm struggling a bit finding fish.
I've been out a few times, without much luck. Got some undersized bream on a prawn plastic, and a stray Mulloway pup on bait at the Lower King Road bridge, near Coraki, also had a go under the Nanarup Road bridge.
Not asking for anyones private spots or anything, but any well known spots that I'm unaware of, or any tips in general for getting the big Bream/Flatties I'm after would be appreciated.
Cheers.
