Surf rod reel
Submitted by Barrakooda on Mon, 2016-02-01 21:11Hi all
Have been lurking here for a while now & picking up some good tips, especially since i have always been a momo man & recently switched to braid. What a difference on my 7' uglies & a 6lb shimano setup!
Anyways, heading up to Jurien to do some beach fishing in Feb. i have a Penn SBG-7144 2 piece rod from way back & looking to upgrade the reel which is a banax sx 5000.
I would like to upgrade the mono to Platypus Lo Stretch & 13' rod has a 15-25lb medium action capability. targeting tailor, salmon & mulla.
Any recommendatons?
Thanks

Gaff hook sizes
Submitted by kknlk on Sat, 2016-01-23 13:20Looking to get a gaff hook for my Hookem pole and really only choosing between Hookem's 8/85, 10/125 or busted fishing 10/100. First figure is diameter and second is the gape. Which one better suited to Steep or Quobba? Target fish will be mackies and cobia mostly. Will prob net demersals rather than gaff.
Esperance work trip.
Submitted by eddking2003 on Fri, 2016-01-22 22:47Evenin' all,
Found out today work are doing me a 'reel' favour (sorry, couldn't help it) and sending me down to Esperance for a few weeks begging of Feb. Told them great, just so long as they know my rods and tackle ride shotgun. Tools are an afterthought! Been reading a few articles on here and can't wait to have a crack in the evenings and hoping for a day off on one of the weekends. Awesome stuff! Any local knowledge much appreciated.
Cheers,
Edd
DHI - June/July
Submitted by badlands on Tue, 2016-01-12 07:31Hi All,
Just chasing a little advise in terms of weather conditions and feasibility of fishing the western side of Dirk Hartog Island around June/July months. Planning on a little trip over to the island around this time of the year, but just unsure what the conditions are usually like.
Had a bit of a gander around the net to try and find some information, but didn't really find much info that was relevant.
Anyone been up there around that time of year and can provide an insight into the swells/winds etc?
TIA

Submitted by eddking2003 on Sat, 2016-01-09 20:59 Can anyone give me a hand with the ID's of these. I had the one down as a camouflage rockcod, is this right. Also what are the legal sizes for these 2 species and are they good eating at all? Thanks!

Blackwall Reach
Submitted by Raoul on Wed, 2015-12-30 01:25Hi just wondering if anyone has had some decent catches from blackwall Reach! i have just started fishing again after a fifteen year break, have another hobby which takes all my spare time but am sick of buying imported fish from my supermarket,i know i can get local stuff but that would mean a 20 km drive which is to far just to buy some fish for a feed.
I have tried Blackwall Reach after having read all the good reports on it but after 3 attempts getting there just on sunrise all i ever catch are blowies, baby snapper baby flounder am using prawns and squid for bait but as yet not one decent fish, so giving up on that spot.
Has anyone found a decent place to fish where i could get a decent feed, love whiting, flathead, most fish..
Thanks for looking Raoul

Submitted by baao on Mon, 2015-12-21 17:28So a couple of us have tried to get tailor and speaking to others about north mole none of us are getting any tailor. I know one guy got a few herring but its basically a graveyard seems to have been over fished or over run by blowies and small tarwine. Not sure where else to try in the metro area where we will have more success.

Penn Prevail
Submitted by laney87 on Sun, 2015-11-22 21:58Hi all,
Just wondering what people would prefer as a spinning stick for Steep Point. Will the 9ft be sufficient and anyone think the extra length and weight rating of the 10ft be better or beneficial in any way? Im sold on the Prevail but length and weight is the only thing im still deciding on
- 9ft (8-12kg)
- 10ft (8-12kg) or (10-15kg)
Will use the same setup for chucking lures on the salmon runs and chasing tailor and the like also and will be basically dedicated for lure casting. Any info muchly appreciated

Tailor chasing
Submitted by eddking2003 on Sat, 2015-11-07 21:03Hey guys,
After a few early morning attempts off the marinas at Hillarys, Ocean Reef and Mindarie I am sick of getting my bait shredded by blowies! Any tips to get around that one?
I am changing my tactics in the mean time and enjoying a bit of surf popping in the hope of a few tailor. Never caught anything in Metro area yet so am hoping a trip to Quinns beach tomorrow may change that. If nothing else, watching the sun come up and looking at the ocean is as good a start to the day as any! See ya out there...

Gopro head mount or chest mount?
Submitted by mikegonefishing on Tue, 2015-10-27 18:41Heading up to quobba next week and I've borrowed a gopro from my mate. Ideally I would of practiced with the gopro before heading up but unfortunately I wasn't that organised.
What are your preferences for capturing the excitement on your gopro? Chest mount or head mount? And what are the pros/cons?
Thanks in advance

Homemade pole gaff
Submitted by kknlk on Wed, 2015-10-21 13:01Needing a longer pole gaff and this project has been on the drawing board for years. Finally put it together. Keeping costs to minimum and came up with following. 2.5m aluminium 30mm pole that was a swim pool scoop that was on the verge. Couldn't get a thinner one for the top half so had to go to Masters and buy a 2m 25mm. This has a 1.6mm wall so will not bend too much. As you can see overall length is around 4.5m. The difficulty was getting threaded fittings to join together. Not a fitter/turner and don't know anyone like that so I have to get ready made parts. This I found in plumbing. Brass is cheaper than stainless which is also much more expensive. Some fiddling required to fit but after some grinding and force fitting I rivetted the threaded parts to the alum tubing. The brass fittings are quite thick as they have to withstand high water pressures. Quite a bit of filing and grinding so that it fit inside the alum tube. Gaff hook was free as I found a 10mm stainless rod which a friend bent into the required shape as well as welding to a short stainless tube into which I fitted one of the threaded parts. Altogether total costs less than $35. Also easy to carry as the smaller tube fits inside the bigger one. Hopefully, I get to christian this in a couple of weeks up in Quobba.

Lucys beach report and georgias tailor
Submitted by quadfisher on Fri, 2015-10-09 15:49Dont take a woman fishing they said!
yeah they really do catch the best ones, but when its your own daughter that you
have been teaching to fish for 10 years , then its ok I say.
Gutters are all good , no weed as off 9/10/15 , lots of tailor around with a few wobbys that we threw back.
The whole stretch from greenough to flatrocks was producing , and that was on a 1 fish day on solunar.
The 800cc quad ate up the conditions, because as usual the beachs around there are super soft.
Snaggers on a deserted beach , catching fish with your kid , thats living mate.

Quobba Early October
Submitted by badlands on Sat, 2015-09-12 07:00Hey all!
Finally able to get a week off work for some serious fishing. Looking at knicking off straight after the school holidays. Just wondering how Quobba fishes around this time of the year. Will the SW/SE's be a typical condition this time of year?
Just wondering if anyone has had much luck around October chasing Pelagics or whether it's a waste of time packing the bus with a shed load of Raiders. Same story with the ballooning gear. Really want to see the misso hooked up to a thumping spanny!
Had a bit of a gander through the forum and didn't find much feedback around this time of year.
Any tips, feedback or advice would be welcomed, even if another area may be a better option.
thanks in advance guys!
