Margaret River/ Dunsborough Ballooning

New to Perth/ surf rod reco./ north mole?
Submitted by englishfisher on Tue, 2017-03-14 20:51Evening chaps.
As the title proclaims i am new to perth, Ive heard mixed reviews about perths fishing, some say its poor some say its good if you know where to go, however im excited to give it a go after reading the forum posts. Ive just spent 2 years fishing in NZ, spending most of my time spinning for kahawai and kingfish.
From what ive read im gathering the "better" fish in the metro area are caught off the beach using a surf rod??? Im looking to invest in one regardless and was hoping i could get a good recommendation for around the 100dollar region?? hopefully. I will be using a shimano Alivio 10000.
I tried north mole out a couple of nights ago after sunset with my little 2-4kg spin outfit, but go no interest. Are there fish to be caught down there on the spin rod? ive heard claims of tailor and bonito but not sure they can be caught on lure.
Finally i will be planning a long weekend trip shortly, looking for somewhere to camp, fish from the beach and have some good chills, any hidden gems would be a appreciated.
Cheers!

Submitted by rails8291 on Mon, 2017-03-06 13:52Hello all,
Have a quick question on slide baiting rod. Will a penn prevail 13ft 10-15kg spin do the job for slide baiting off the beach for a beginner, any problems I would come against.

sharks
Submitted by Boyce on Thu, 2017-02-23 09:15 Hi guys
chasing a large shark at the moment,
wondering if anyone knows any spots that have a good track record, and that arent too hard to land a large shark at,
hooked up to something big at north mole a couple months back, but was impossible to fight there so lost it after a 45 minute fight,
also, is there a particular bait that works best, have got mullet, ox hearts and tuna heads already,
is there a best time or weather conditions to fish in, or are sharks just every where,
thanks, sharkhunter1

New Rules for Lucky Bay Camping
Submitted by iamad on Mon, 2017-02-13 21:15Just got back from a weekend up at Lucky Bay (the north one!).
We got a little caught out with the new rules (see pic)
The new rules are posted HERE, but we didn't check this before we left (who would?!)
$15 per car is now the camping fees.
Anyway, it isn't all bad news. There is a designated camp area for those without a portable chemical toilet and they have cleared and leveled a large area near the shacks. They have also installed loooong drop toilets (don't even stink yet).
John (Caretaker/Ranger) was full of good news when we arrived - no one has been able to fish for 3 months thanks to the southerlies, no one has caught a Mulloway in weeks and even the locals have given up on the Taylor. He was almost right.
We managed a few taylor, had fun chasing Tuskfish (and got the snapped & bent hooks to prove it) and a got handful of Dart. Winds were either north or south, so ballooning was not an option.

Dirk Hartog - urchin point shack
Submitted by Happy Hooker on Sat, 2017-01-28 07:59Just wondering if anyone has been to dirk recently as am doing landbased trip staying at urchin shack in April around Anzac Day.
Been before ( 2 years ago) but not sure of shack condition / what they have cleaned up and taken away eg they had some old tables there for filleting etc but not sure if they are still there and we need to bring up...( 14 day trip so got to be mindful of room for supplies etc)
Cheers fellas !

Land based metro Mack
Submitted by Pob on Mon, 2017-01-23 19:41Managed to get a metro Mack a few weeks back at North Mole, was targeting them with a mullet under helium (was skipping beautifully) but I have always been told that they're a day light sight hunter, but I got mine at 11pm, I left the balloon out on the off chance of a shark.A bit surprised when line started peeling off the reel and after a nice little fight I saw silver and not the dull colour of a shark showed up in my head light, no gaff or net but managed to steer it between two rocks so when the swell dropped I managed to grab it by the gill plate and lift her up!

Perth Metro Ballooning
Submitted by Nickallen1969 on Tue, 2017-01-10 17:30Afternoon all,
Hoping someone out there might be able to point me in the right direction so to speak. Have a ballooning set up and want to give it a bit of a go ( wind dependant ) probably start of Feb. I'm northern suburbs and wondered if anyone has any ideas of best places to try - 12ft beach rod, Tyrnos 16 with 700m braid/mono onto garfish bait. Looking for air ballooning not Helium and didn;t really want to travel further north than Geraldton for a first outing. Thanks in advance

Best species to target and suitable fishing tackle for beach/rockfishing!
Submitted by crayster on Wed, 2016-12-14 03:21Hi again
We are a couple of guys from Germany on a trip in WA and we promised to provide our ladies with regular fish for dinner and so, we have to deliver. We have no boat, so we try our luck land-based. Date is from mid April to mid May at those spots: Fremantle, Margaret River, Denmark, Albany, Jurien Bay, Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Gnaraloo and Exmouth.
Since we are from Bavaria, we all are complete saltwater rookies. Hence, some advice on which kind of edible fish is good to catch from beaches/rocks and a recommendation for suitable fishing tackle (type of rod, reel, line strength, etc.) for this purpose would be greatly appreciated.

Cray pots April/Mai
Submitted by crayster on Mon, 2016-12-05 22:52Hi all
On our WA roadtrip, we are planning to buy a cray pot and drop it into the water anytime we have overnight sea access. We do not have a boat, so our scope to place the pot is limited. Heard about crayfish moving deeper into the sea in autumn - sounds bad for us - but I don't know if that's everywhere the case.
Starting on 13 April in Fremantle, we first take the Southern Loop via Margaret River - Denmark - Albany and back to Perth, then from 23 April on heading North via Jurien Bay-Kalbarri-Shark Bay-Gnaraloo to Exmouth.
Given those locations at that time of the year (and given suitable bait), is there a good chance to catch some crayfish or are we better off saving the money?
Thanks
Sebastian

Anyone been down to white hills lately? I went a month ago and the beach was washed out after 1km and there was HEAPS of weed.. and not the good kind.
Only managed a tiny Tarwhine
Wondering if it's improved at all or still a weedy mess?

[Albany] Tips for avoiding the river rays?
Submitted by Jimmy441 on Sat, 2016-08-27 07:27Hey guys, been fishing here in Albany for the past few months and having a fair bit of trouble with stringrays while targeting Mulloway in the river.
Anyone got any tips to avoid em, or is it just par for the course?
We've landed some nice Mulloway, but the ray hookups are super common, and while fun to fight in their own right, the result more often than not is a lost rig.
Any general tips from Albany locals would also be greatly appreciated, land or boat. Cheers.
