[Albany] Tips for avoiding the river rays?

Hey guys, been fishing here in Albany for the past few months and having a fair bit of trouble with stringrays while targeting Mulloway in the river.

Anyone got any tips to avoid em, or is it just par for the course?

We've landed some nice Mulloway, but the ray hookups are super common, and while fun to fight in their own right, the result more often than not is a lost rig.

Any general tips from Albany locals would also be greatly appreciated, land or boat. Cheers.

A small piece of cork just above your bait can help. Push a pin through it then force the leader through the pin hole. Will still catch a few rays but should minimize it a bit. Also using live baits over smelly dead baits will cut back ray catches. If fishing from a boat just stop your bait a metre or so short of the bottom

Cheers for the tips Luke, have been using live baits rather than dead baits, have found that the dead baits are just picked away by smaller fish anyway. Very interesting about the cork.

He gets river mullas down there on stickbaits worked just below the surface! Good luck getting a ray while doing THAT!
