Fishing Spot (north of kalbarri)
Submitted by poida on Thu, 2007-02-01 19:50A friend of mine who i fish steep with has heard rumour's of a spot just north of Kalbarri and is thinking of a trip in the next few months. I have heard the rumours myself but neither of us have a clue how to get there. If the moons align i may be able to go also and post up some pics ect. Its meant to be cliff fishing, the bottom of the zuydorp cliffs i presume. The track in is a killer, and there is a 4wd tyre graveyard half way in. You need the land owners permission to go through his land. Thats about all we know and the challenge of the place is probably half the reason we want to give it a go.

Bronzies
Submitted by lighterthief on Mon, 2007-01-22 20:11Seems to be alot of sharks around north perth at the moment, last 3 of the 4 times ive been fishing ive hooked one.. Pulled a whopper up to the rocks on saturday night. At first it didnt do anything except alot of head shakes, made a few short runs and didnt even seem to care it was being slowly dragged towards the rocks. I pulled it right up into the beam of my headlight just infront of me, and was absolutely stunned to see a bronze whaler bigger than myself, a moment later it went completely nuts, did a U turn and wasnt seen again. About half an hour later i hooked another about 4ft which put up a pretty good fight, then chomped through the nylon leader right at my feet. I had a massive slick going out as far as i could see in the dark, seems to make a big difference.. also watched somthing big busting up the surface for a few seconds about 200m out. Got a few tailor and herring aswell which mostly went back or became live bait.

Flatrock, The full story!
Submitted by SPESS on Mon, 2007-01-22 10:39We headed off friday late afternoon to fish flatrocks, with a quick feed of mackers so we could set up camp before sundown. A word of warning, when travelling with Mr Sherbert dont follow to close through the bush tracks as you might put your new 4x4 into a limestone wall when entering the beach. Forgot to tell you about that one he reacons! After spending an hour or so setting up camp (steve brings half of bcf with him) with finally wet a line as the sun was setting. Some of Spess's burley did the trick as steve landed 8 fish to my 0. Good size herring and the odd tailor. Mind you i was 10 beers up! Had a early night to get up at 2am for a fish, even though it was still blowing its arse off so i went back to bed. Awoke at 4.30am and got straight into it. Steve wonders down to get a head start only to return soaked from head to toe as a wave has hit him head on first cast! Shit he looked funny, something like a drouned 53 year old rat. I caught up quickly and a double header had me one fish down by breakfast. Andrew was the cook (steves son) and did a wonderfull job. I cracked another stubbie and decided to do some ballooning so me and steve sent out some whole herring and blue mackeral baits and berleyed hard but to no avail nothing touched them. By this stage i waas aleast 2 fish up on him and let alone a carton of teds and a few scotches. Wind picked up again so nothing but herring could be landed again. Steve decided to have a few burbourns to catch up and i started to get worried, he neally fell into a reef hole and only the neck was gone, i thought i might have to put the poor pensioner to bed.LOL. All in all im pretty sure i was up at the end, fish and beer but a VERY ENJOYABLE COUPLE OF DAYS. To the many other fisherman that where there at the same time, please make sure you know how to drive in the beach as putting my rod down to un bog you guys pisses me off slightly. One or two is ok but four in a weekend thats rediculous. ( 2 on the way home!) My pleasure to fish with Sherbert and the others and have to do it again soon. Hopefully with a few mulloway and sharks throwen in for good messure, oh yeah Steve dont forget to bring that 10 year old bottle of burbourn again ill help you to finish it off this time! And ill return the tonne of sand out of my swag and ute!

Tailor
Submitted by SPESS on Tue, 2007-01-09 08:04Hi guys just thought that if anyone is interested i was down at pinneroo point on saturday night for a look and there was tailor running mad down there. I seen 10 fish of about 45cm get landed in about 20mins. One guy even dropped a mulloway at the brakers due to his mate missing the leader and busting it off (dont know if there still mates alot of swearing going on!!) it would have gone atleast 12 to 15kg! I do abit of shore bashing and throught that a few others might be chasing a good night spot thats firing. Mulies seem to be the go on a running sinker rig but the way in which they where biting anything would have worked. It was pretty late though, around 7 to 10pm the guys said they ran for.

South Perth Breamskis
Submitted by lighterthief on Sun, 2006-12-31 19:00Fished the shore around south perth today, plenty of bream to be found. Landed around 15 fish about 10 were legal, biggest was around 36-37cm. All were caught on bait only the blowies seemed interested in plastics..

Bronze Whaler
Submitted by lighterthief on Mon, 2006-12-25 10:44I Fished off one of the northern marina on christams eve eve when it was blowing a 25 knot easterly, Hoping to hook a shark i put out dead mullet under a balloon and floated it about 150m out. Had about 15 litres of burley with me and after burelying up for a few hours hooked and almost landed a bronzie about 1m long, i was lifting him up by the the trace when the bottom crimps slipped releasing the hook and fish.Anyway i sent another mullet out into the ocean and after 2 failed hook ups and consequent resets hooked another shark, much bigger than the first it was about 5 feet long and i reckon it weighed around 35-40kg. Sorry no photos, i was by myself and it was way to big to get out of the water.

Steep Point Report/Photos
Submitted by poida on Mon, 2006-12-18 13:03We returned from Steep Point the other day, burnt, tired and sore due to the quality of the fishing up there.
[img_assist|fid=87667|thumb=1|alt=morning at the point]
[img_assist|fid=87672|thumb=1|alt=Ed 90 odd meters up]
Day one started out well with me hooking a nice spaniard on lure within half an hour of being there. After that things quietened down and we spent the day on the "highside" where i lost a monster wobby which left me with aching arms for the next 2 days, we had never seen the wild side that quiet and were left wondering where the pinkies and baldies had gone. We had a flick that night and Mick had a lure that was playing up, "can you tune this for me" he asked. Cast, crank, crank, pause, crank and i was on again with my best spaniard for the trip, on Micks outfit.
[img_assist|fid=87691|thumb=1|alt=me an spanish]
[img_assist|fid=87658|thumb=1|alt=Steep Snapper]
Day 2 and a tuna to Mick (his first fish at the point) and another spaniard to me. Ed asked me if i wanted to have a cast of his new outfit, and like the day before, another spaniard on someone else's outfit had me wondering how long my luck would hold.
[img_assist|fid=87708|thumb=1|alt=micks first tuna]
Day 3 saw Mick with his 1st spaniard on lure, and 10 minutes later his second came in.
[img_assist|fid=87678|thumb=1|alt=graham and spaniard]
Day 4, 5, and 6 we took quite easily with graham bagging his first on a leadhead jig and a couple more on balloons. Another 2 outings were made to the "highside" with me taking a pb pinkie, and after that nearly being yonked off the cliff by a shark as the drag was locked down. Ed lost a nice pinkie on the haul up when his main line snapped, 1 minute later i was on and found eds rig, complete with pinkie, tangled to my line. After a quick ownership debate, and another couple of pinkies, we returned to the point to find Graham with the best spaniard of the trip, around 15kgs.
Was a great trip!

white hills
Submitted by sherbert on Mon, 2006-10-30 16:50Went down to white hills saturday lunch time. Great 4x4 place and fishing spot, we travelled 10 kms along the beach and set up camp with 7 others with 4 - 4x4. After a few beers the wind drop of a bit and we fished for tailor and any fish that past, some of the guys picked up some tailor and i got some silver bream which went back to live another day. The next day was blowing a gale from the south/west. I still got up to fish at 5am and some tailor were caught. As we were packing up a humpback and calf were 100m of the beach right in front of us.

Submitted by sherbert on Tue, 2006-10-17 16:24Went up to flatrock on saturday left at 4.30 am 3 /4x4s got there after driving very close to a bush fire. We arrive alittle after 5.30 am, a bit of water comeing over reef but look very good with wind coming from behind us. Caught some big bull herring/whiting and some flathead, had some big hits/tailor maybe, I got my son a 4x4 last week so he spent his time getting a beach driving lesson off one of the guys while we fished.

Rod for light lures.
Submitted by poida on Fri, 2006-07-21 16:56I am heading back to steep point in Dec and have decided to buy a new rod.I would appreciate some advice from the pros. The main purpose for this rod will be for flipping the 30grm bibbed lures out as far as possible with the only problem being that it has to be able to stop a tuna. I saw 1 guy up there last time who constantly cast further than the others around him. It was longer and whippier than other rods and at a guess that it was around 9 to 10ft and in the 6-8kg range.
This is what I am after, i think.
9-10ft single piece rod, light weight, quite to very whippy so it casts 30grm weights , bit of grunt lower in the blank for stopping macs and tuna.
I also know a good rod builder so a blanck is also an option.

New Forum - Landbased Fishing
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-06-30 21:21I have created a new fishing forum as there are quite a few landbased fisho's starting to sign up. I have given it the blurb of : Land-based questions, trips and discussions.
I know this site has been a lot focused on boat fisho's, but the landbaser's pull just as good as fish and from a lot tougher conditions. I hope this forum gathers some momentum.
Tight lines to the landbased crew,
Cheers,
Adam
