Looking at a new surf rod
Submitted by Chuditch on Sat, 2009-07-25 19:58
Went down to the local tackle store today in the search of a new surf rod to take on a trip up north. I took a liking to the Gary Howard Phatoms, probably best value for money around the $200 mark. Finding a reel to suit is another issue. Does anyone have any suggestions around the $300 mark.

Advice required for quick trip away.
Submitted by Big Fella fishn on Fri, 2009-06-26 13:35Seeking anyones input to where they think would be the best place to catch a feed and camp for a few days, between Jurien and Geraldton-ish? A mate and I are getting a few days off in early August and want to take a quick trip away fishing and as we both live in Mandurah, dont want to spend more than five or six hours getting there. After a bit of contemplating we realize that the area between Jurien and Geraldton would be probably the best bet. The only problem is we dont know where would be best. The weather isn't going to be real flash we acknowledge that, but we're still going! We intend on taking up a small runabout (16ft Voyager with 70HP Johnno) behind the 4x4. Any input would be more than appreciated.

Reading beach formations/knowing where the fish should be
Submitted by gumbyconts on Tue, 2009-06-23 17:11well ive just started reading about fishing after starting since a kid, there is a lot of info to take in, not that i mind cos with knowledge comes power (and hopefully fish).
anyway ive looked around on the net and havent really found anywhere that discusses beach formations and how to read the surf in terms of where the fish would hide/hunt if you like. does anybody have any advice on how to read the surf, or perhaps websites with this info. i'd like to hang around the metro beaches south to freo and north to hillaries.
so far i know about tailor keeping to the whitewash and hanging around limestone reefs (perhaps like near Trigg?), although thats the extent of my knowledge.
i would like to catch bream, tarwhine, larger whiting, gardies, tuna, salmon....actually anything besides herring which seems to be all i can catch.

Advice please regarding beach fishing north of the river
Submitted by gumbyconts on Mon, 2009-06-22 22:49hi new here, returning from fishing since a kid. i thought id try my luck for some advice about beach fishing from around the Floreat/Swanbourne drain up to Trigg.
i usually try my luck on a paternoster with mullies on a gang around the drain. usually this bags me 2-4 herring, although not many in the past few trips. i generally had better luck with smaller bait. i have also caught a few small whiting once in a while using small long shank hooks with a bit of squid.
does any body have any advice to increase the variety of fish in my bucket? ive read up on minnows, poppers and metals. do any of these work around Trigg where there is more rock? otherwise what baits work well for you?

Dawesville Cut Today
Submitted by Auslobster on Fri, 2009-06-12 19:05Headed down there this arvo and landed three salmon trout ranging between 43 and 46cm...lost three others due to light gauge jighead hooks straightening out, and had another half a dozen "follows". They came on as soon as the tide started going out, and there were that many herring around I was jagging one about every second or third cast. So if anyone's in the area and are after a nice feed and/or tremendous light tackle fun, well that's a good place to go!

Lures on Metro Beaches
Submitted by westaus_ryan on Thu, 2009-06-11 15:21If i was to take my 15-25g pilchard and halco lures to a metro beach, which beach would be most ideal to use them?
Maybe Triggs?
I'm quite new to lure fishing but ive just put my daiwa regal za 4000 reel on a graphite shimano rod with 20lb braid, so im super keen to get out there and cast over those breakers!
Any advice on techniques would be most welcomed, thanks!

New to fishing in bunno.
Submitted by couldntcatchacold on Sun, 2009-05-17 20:47Gday well im pretty new to fishing all together really i have a beach rod but am looking to upgrade it as its seen better days wondering what would a good starting rod an reel be something thats good enough to get me out passed the surf and strong enough for tailor/salmon/mulloway. Ive fished down at buffalo and got a tailor and some small whiting just wondering wether there was anywhere around this way worth fishing at or should i make the drive down south and if so whereabouts to head? and what kind of a rig do the fish tend to favour? atm im using 3 ganghooks on a 10cm wire trace with a 3 ounce star sinker on another trace further up the line and it seemed to go ok but think the tailor wernt all to keen on the wire trace oh and im always looking for a fishing buddy if anyone else is! thanks in advance for any help

Sharks from shore in the metro area.
Submitted by cuthbad on Thu, 2009-05-07 19:01
Hi all,
I recently got back into fishing after being convinced to try live
baits from shore. On my first attempt with a herring i got a decent
tailor (better than I ever got in all the years i tried with mulies in
my teens). Following this the same people who convinced me to try got
me onto shark fishing, as is their passion. I spent most of summer with
the same guys and between three of us we got 4 bronzies (all returned
to swim another day) along with wobbies etc. A few of weeks back the
place we fish from got closed off for maintenance (I think they are
building a tiolet block or something) and the surrounding areas havent
produced much.
I was wondering if this is a seasonal thing with fewer sharks around in winter or if anyone has any ideas for other areas to fish for sharks around perth?
Any advice is appreciated, cheers.

Anyone know if the river mouth is open or closed??
Quite a few years ago i fished a couple locations that way and got 3-4KG tailor, and some nice mullas as well, thinking of doing a quick trip up there for a fish.
Anyone know if there been many fish showing up that way?

beach access advice
Submitted by Hansie on Mon, 2009-04-27 10:17Gday guys
can anyone suggest a good beach between Safety Bay and Lake Clifton where i can take the 4x4 out on the sand. preferrably somewhere semi protected from the Southerly that will likely be blowing its ring out when i get there on Wednesday night. i wont have a rod, just looking for somewhere to go chill out on the sand for a while with a couple of beers and some good company to get the head straight after too long in the bush.
Golden Bay would have been perfect 15 years ago but i doubt the beach access is still open there.
cheers

Beach fishing at Club Capricorn
Submitted by orsijamo on Tue, 2009-04-21 23:04Heading up to club capricorn at Yanchep on saturday with the family and some friends. I was going to wet a line if I got the chance, and am looking for some advice on what to target from the beach in front of the resort - and the best rigs to set up.
Was only planning to take some smaller gear for the kids and a smaller baitcaster setup with a 6'3 rod for myself.
