Boat Upgrade Advice

Hey all

Looking for some advice on 6-meter boat prices. I’ve got a 5-meter Seafarer V-Sea, which is great, but thinking of upgrading for more comfort, especially for family trips and fishing with my kids now 10, 12 and 15. A bigger boat would be better for rough weather and longer trips and give me the option of overnight stays in it. At the moment if I can sell my tub for the $30k mark I'd have around $55k to spend without going into debt but I am also in no real hurry as my girl serves me well.

Before COVID, I seem to remember that half decent 6-meter boats were starting around $55,000 but now, it seems hard to find anything good at that price unless it’s really old. Do I remember this wrong or have the prices of boats just stayed high?

I’m considering well built boats like the Seafarer Victory 6.0, Caribbean Reef Runner, Haines Hunter, Cruise Craft, and North Shore etc and possibly a Haines Signatures. I definitely want a fiberglass hull with a four-stroke Honda, Suzuki, or Yamaha at or close to the max for the hull plus anchor winch, deck wash, lights, livewell etc. There are some 5.5m boats around for that price but it's fairly pointless going from a 5m to a 5.5m IMO.

I wouldn’t like to go for anything older than 20 years unless it has a recent outboard, trailer and floor/stringer/transom refurbishments or a full inspection by a Shipwright.

Any tips or insights would be awesome!

Cheers JF

Your comparing prices from over 4 years ago nearly 5 I dont think anything is the same price as back then no matter what category you look!!
Sometimes Ali boats pop up around that price with half decent four stroke around 50-60k, but I doubt you'll find something in a popular f/glass brand with 4st and newish at that mark. They sell pretty quick and usually at 70-80k.
Unfortantely with new boats always going up in prices, I dont see second hand ones ever going down and prices now are just the new norm. even bloody small tinnies these days are freakin expensive!! sadly owning a boat now almost feels like a rich privelege

Ive seen some trophys

Thu, 2024-12-12 04:19

Ive seen some trophys prolines and the odd other U.S import around the price you're looking but newer 4 strokes are the killer. Their prices are redonculous new and the anyone with a reasonably low hour high hp 4 is wanting not much less either.

Usually find theres always something missing from the package, e.g trailer quality, anchor winch, size of fuel tank or underpowered donk.

gunna have to start spelling boat = BOATT... Bring out another "ten" thousand

Interesting post as I had a 6.25 cruise craft and sold it because I want the same improvements you are looking for. I am looking in the 7mt range seeking more comfort etc.  I think it's just human nature to think we need bigger and better but when it comes to boats I don't think you will see a huge difference between a 5 and 6 mtr boat.

prices in Perth sure are high across a lot of things. House prices are out of control!  anyway good luck with your hunt, there are bargains to be had.

Cheers all. Yeah looks like

Cheers all. Yeah looks like the price of new boats has sky rocketted so used boat prices will remain high. To get what I'd like I'll be looking about the $75k mark. I think I'll be happy with my girl for quite some time based on that.

How does that quote

Fri, 2024-12-13 13:15

How does that quote go?
"Happiness is the feeling you get, just before needing more happiness"

Do you really want to go out in shittier weather?
I don't but then there are no sheltered waters to play in around us and my trips are longer which means I like to be able to return in whatever (within reason).

If I lived in Perth (boats down there now) I doubt I'd have the size mine is now.

The Whitleys consistently pop

Sun, 2025-01-12 19:48

The Whitleys consistently pop up far cheaper than Haines, Caribbeans, Seafarers etc.

Are they more of a family boat rather than a serious offshore boat? Assuming they aren't laid up as heavy as it's counterparts?

I used to have a Whittley

Wed, 2025-01-15 12:10

I used to have a Whittley Frosty, and that was more of a family boat. The Sea Legend range are designed for fishing but I've never been out in one so can't comment.

Have you been out on a bigger

Fri, 2025-01-17 16:11

Have you been out on a bigger boat...or even a few to see how they compare to what you have and how they ride?

could try a few members on here as you might get a more honest appreciation for what works and what doesnt.

I have an Evolution 600 Apex with a 250 zook on the rear, its 6.7m nose to tail of hull and 6.2m on the old scale with a 2.5m beam, huge deck space and plenty of cabin. I'm not selling for a couple of years but youre welcome to take a look if you like NOR. Its a fishing boat first and foremost, comfortably fishes three along the gunnels. I have two kids and there's heaps of space when theyre on board. gunnels are lower than you would have on a Haines 650R or similar which suits the kids, I've been out in plenty of shit and it always gets me back safe.

I wanted something that would enable me to fish more often, which ultimately means be able to fish when its less pleasant.

you could join a few of the forums on bookface for the 'owner pages' of the OEMs quite a few baots come up for each of the marques there rather than through other mediums (a neighbour showed me a quinny he was tempted with that wasnt on marketplace or otherwise)
