Steep point fishers! Lot of questons for you guys!
Submitted by flyingdutchfisherman on Fri, 2011-09-02 13:56Hey guys
Last year I was doing a road trip from Broome to Perth but there were some damn cycolones grrrrrr!
I saw Broome, Exmouth and Coral bay and then I drove all the way inland to Newman down to Perth so i missed steep point and a few more places..
Fished a lot in Broome, Exmouth and coralbay! Was super good! But I have heard so many stories about this STEEP POINT! This magic big mac spot! haha
I was wondering how I could fish the best of this high cliffs!
I have got a game rod and a 7 foot with a spinning reel. So I guess I need to use my game rod?
What lures do i need, do i need a gaff?
How is it possible to trow lures of this high rocks? How can I find live baits around there?
Got any tips tell them all to me!
cheers guyssssssss

Fishing Boots - best for grip and saltwater use.
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Wed, 2011-08-31 09:42I am in the market to buy new rock fishing boots. My old ones were a mixture between neoprene / diving boot with a "not too bad grip / no spikes" - this served me well for 3 yrs. Time has come to spend some $ on me feet as the old shoes are worn through. This time I would like to focus on grip and comfortability - reaching the stage where I am between a "old fart" and newly developed fart.
Your thoughts and experiance;
I have seen the Mirage / Adrenalin and a equiv neoprene Mirage look alike - should I go;
1. spikes, no spikes?
2. What would be the most comfortable rock fishing shoe be - if fishing on the rocks for lets say 8 hrs?
Any advice would be great - looking to purchase this weekend.
Cheers

Loonies/Flatrocks vs White Hills/Preston ???
Submitted by drof on Mon, 2011-08-29 13:40Hi guys,
We've been in Perth 2 years now and love the fishing and beach access close(ish) to Perth.
Have fished the beaches North of Two Rocks (Flatrocks, Loonies etc) a number of times and nearly always caught something.
Was looking for a change of scenery and was interest in peoples comments on White Hills, Tims Thickett, Preston options. Have never been to any of those spots and wanted to know how they compare to the beaches North of Two Rocks. Do they fish as well, are there more people, is weed a problem, what to target etc?
Would appreciate any comments. Since I'm not from WA, the NoR/SoR rivalry isn't an issue! ;)
Cheers,
Drof
PS - Obviously have 4WD and happy to use it.

Saragosa 18000 - Surf Reel?
Submitted by symetre on Tue, 2011-08-23 15:23Gday all.
Im from SA and fish our far west coast every year for mullies and sharks. We're heading back again next Feb so im in the process of putting togther a new heavy surf spin combo.
The rod is more than likely gonna be another Wilson 5120. (Already have one in overhead and love em)
Im considering matching the 5120 to a Saragosa 18,000. 20kg of drag and a large line capacity can come in handy on our western coastline.
Im gonna spool it with 40lb mono.
Curious to hear if any of you guys are running the Saragosa or Spheros 18,000's as a surf reel and if so how do you find it.. and what rod do you have it matched to?
Cheers guys.

Surf Casting Distance Problems
Submitted by Redbucket on Mon, 2011-08-15 10:18Heya
Looking for some assistance with my surf casting, I am just not getting the distance I'm hoping for when casting a ganged mulie and a Size 4 (84gm) star sinker on a 3 point swivel
I'm using a saragosa 18000f with 25lb mono and a 12 foot ugly stick gold.
I was thinking of using a lighter sinker like a size 2, but will this be to light to hold the bait out in the surf?
I have also been considering getting a different rod as I haven't been overly impressed by the ugly stick. Have been considering the daiwa surf sensor, but this is big bucks for my fishing budget.
Any suggestions?
Thx in advance....

Dane fishing Perth, and appreciate any tips and tricks
Submitted by danefishingwa on Fri, 2011-07-29 11:56G'day mates!
howareya?
I just moved here for a 5 month period, and would very much like to go out and catch/release some nice big fish, that won't stand in the way for a good fight!
ANY recommendations in a radius of 50-60 km of Perth?
I was hoping for trout, salmon or any other fish, that could reach a size over half a meter.
Rivers or nice spots on the shore.
and which bait would you prefer?
I will probably invest in a rod with wheel, not too expensive, maybe find something in quokka for about 50-70 dollars.
Hope to get som local expert advices.
See you out there!
Cheers Simon

Is anybody having any success beach fishing?
Submitted by Big Jords on Thu, 2011-07-28 17:20I have been out a few times over the last week quite early as the conditons have been ideal with an early high tide, but i have had very little success, I had one bite yesterday morning and it not a very good take almost as if the fish was spooked, so i took a different aproach and lightend my rig and only had one bite again it was sensitive. I thought i had done all my research and the conditions looked in my favour to have a good fish.... olbiviously not! If anybody out theres knows what could be going wrong i would love to find out. Thanks Jord

Newbie needing some direction on gear!
Submitted by Rik178m on Wed, 2011-07-20 21:39Hi all, I'm new to fishing but the bug has caught quick! I've been using the entry level jarvis walker combo in 7ft general and 12ft surf combo. I'm looking to upgrade abit. Any direction would be great!
I only fish land based, soon to be travelling up the west coast from perth to darwin (hopefully dropping in at quobba), price needs to stay as low as poss, not sure what fish i will be targeting but I would love to catch a spanish mackeral or something to brag about! I'm in kalgoorlie at the moment so not getting much advise from the fishing shops here. I've got some 30lb and 80lb fireline which i'm not sure which rod to put them on.
Also whats the difference in the reels? such as overhead, baitcaster spin etc.
Thanks

My 1st decent Ray in WA - Smooth Ray
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Sun, 2011-07-17 23:21She smoked me saturday morning at my fav beach spot and I decided to go back tonight for a 2nd round effort.
Saturday morning she levelled my rod with the beach and I was too slow getting the rod out of the steel rod holders - this time I was prepared. Send out a herring flap bait and within 20 min got stuck into it.
She made 4 runs - the second which was close to a 30mt - 40mt run. Slowly took my time to bring her - 30 min later she was on the beach. Took my shot and helped her back into the water. Must say she had a lotsa things to say as she was making weird noises like 'spitting and grunting' - when I turned her round to get back into the water.
Great session and a great fish.
Her width was 1.25mt and I estimate close to 30kg .

LEATHER JACKET
Submitted by harry_davis on Fri, 2011-07-15 15:20hey guys
i wanted to ask what is the western australian size and bag limit for Horseshoe leatherjacket... because i keep getting decent fish around the 30cm mark at hillarys. i know they are pretty good eating but i wanted just to see.
what is the best rigg to use?
i currently use a two hook padenosta rig with size 6 bait holder hooks, the only think with this is that the bictch is pretty big, with big brown wrasse, blowies, goat fish, mullet and sweep...
i use coral prawn and squid as bait, is that the best???
does burley work ???
Cheers!!!

First cast flicked out a White Richter Plug to see if it got any attention. Instant hit and several follows, so swapped over to my ever trusty 80mm Squidgy Drop Bear and here's the results. Def going back there tomorrow!

Sherbert's Tailor spots
Submitted by Rig on Tue, 2011-07-05 19:04Went up to Uncle Herbies tailor spots on monday that have been firing of recent. Started at spot 2 when 'never fails' Rig 1 Herbie 0 it wasnt firing although it looked good. Herbie cracked the sh@#ts so as he was driving we went to spot 4. I had bought some poppers 2nd hand off a felow fishing club member who said they were pretty good, he wasnt wrong 4 casts 4 fish. Unfortunately I didnt change the hooks that were worse for wear and dropped 3 in the shore break. The photo is of one that went 55cm.. I cant put a pick up of Herbie cos he didnt catch anything. He did drop a nice one in the shore break.
heading back tomorrow
