Proposed setup for ballooning-Steeppoint
Submitted by Sharktale on Fri, 2012-01-13 12:17Gents,
Have the following outfit in mind for ballooning at Steeppoint and will appreciate comments on the outfit:
Reel: Trini 16 (10kg drag pressure)
Rod: Wilson life fibre 1pce OH 7ft 8-15kg line
Line: 30 or 40lb braid 300m and 40lb mono topshot.
Terminal tackle: 10-14/0 Mustad Demon circle, snelled, 200lb x 1m multistrand trace connected to 9m 130lb windon.
What size helium balloon for a 30cm tailor, herring, gardie respectively?
Can I fly the balloon out on a 20m trace and then attach to mainline via an elastic band?
It is a one shot at the title scenario and don't wanna pay school fees! Help appreciated. Cheers.

Long leader or Short leader ??? Landbased/Surf fishing.
Submitted by pembo6 on Fri, 2012-01-13 11:56OK. Im just after peoples opinions and reasons for long or short leaders. For landbased / surf fishing, chucking lures etc. Generally using 9ft to 12ft graphite rods. I normally find people on this site love to discuss different rigs etc.
Whenever I use a long leader (longer than the rod and wrapped a few times around reel), I get people saying “you don’t need to do that, just use a 1m leader, it works fine, no leader knot through guides etc etc”.
But then whenever I rock up at the beach with a short leader (bimini in braid, GT or improved Albright knot to 1m of mono), I get people saying “oh, you really need a nice long leader to reduce shock to the leader knot and protect from reef etc”.
I guess I should just do whatever I want, but I am interested in your opinions and preferences.
I usually have a long enough leader to wrap a few times around the reel. Generally 14lb or 20lb braid mainline with a 3 - 4m long 20 - 60lb mono or fluoro leader. Depending on what I am fishing for.
I used to do a bimini twist to GT knot or Albright (improved) but find the bimini often gets snagged on the bottom guide so I have moved to a PR knot (Chinese finger trap style) and it seems to work well.
So…… what do you use. Long leader for bait, short leader for popper chucking? Long for both? Short for both?

First Shark but cracked rod!
Submitted by Rik178m on Thu, 2012-01-12 22:07Caught my first shark on tues night! Hopetoun jetty, Bronzie about 5ft. Caught it on a penn 850ssm and rovex aureus 12ft 6-15kg.
Problem is I cracked the rod! on the join there's a 4mm crack!
I'm thinking of getting a Penn 113 or 114 OH reel but want a rod that's got abit more grunt. Not sure what size I should get either. Something that won't crack! Would be cool to take it north for some monsters too.
Any recommendations?

What a cracker session!
Submitted by cuthbad on Tue, 2012-01-10 16:00Hit the beach with Sherbs and Billy this morning. Was an early start but the drive there was made entertaining by some suicidal bunnies and foxes. Lines were out just before first light and we beat the fish there by about 20 mins. First hit and I dropped the fish, Billy quickly picked up the slack and had one on the sand after a great battle on ultra light gear. Then it was on for over an hour.... best bloody tailor sesh I can remember.
Mix of bait and lures with bait the winner for the day by far. Cleaned up and home in time for breakfast!
Cheers boys was a great morning!

little help please!!
Submitted by chriss on Mon, 2012-01-09 09:57Hey guys,
Basically im a bit of a noob and my girlfriend bought me a new 10ft beachrod for xmas. (I think its a cheapy although it is an ugly stick and when i was younger they were the cream of the crop right?)
Anyhow its a 6-10kg and i have put 9kg braid on it. The guy at bcf also talked me into buying a 60lb black magic leader. (I thought this was a bit over the top, but what would i know im a noob). Im thinking of going for an early morning fish down at challenger beach but not quite sure on the setup i should use and what i could expect to catch down there.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Stingray handling.
Submitted by knigit on Thu, 2012-01-05 09:28Can I have my rig back please?
Looking for the best way to handle stingrays.
The smaller ones are fine, but when I can be bothered to wind in the bigger specimens I usually just cut off the trace. Judging by the number of rays I've seen where mongrels have just cut off the sting I'm not the only one a bit wary of them. Don't want to go down the gaf option I've seen others do either.
Cheers.

Sliding - Longer steel trace
Submitted by cuthbad on Tue, 2012-01-03 12:42After seeing aalfreds whole trace get inhaled and bitten off last week I started thinking that the normal 60-70cm steel trace on my slides might not do the job on the bigger ones. I remembered reading somewhere that some people add some steel trace between the stopper and the windon leader. I tried this a couple of times when I started sliding but found it wasnt necessary, now I know it is I'm trying again. Those of you who have targetted big sharks on slide, how do you reckon this will go?
Stopper ring joined to 1.2m 200lb nylon covered steel with crimps then covered in shrink wrap to ensure the slide sits right over it (yes I know most people attach to the swivel not the ring, I dont like doing that so please ignore it) - double figure 8 join from steel to 1.3m windon leader.
I have tested it a couple of times and the slide seems to move over the knot easily enough, but is there a better way? I was thinking of an albright to join the steel and mono but with such thick lines its not great.
This will leave me with about 1.8m of steel trace before the bait, I have tested all the joins and cant break them by hand. I had complete confidence in the way I used to do it so changing anything makes me nervous, but from what I have seen I think it is necessary. Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Adam

Great start to the new year Moore River report
Submitted by Rig on Sun, 2012-01-01 08:29Happy new year crew!
Well I drove up to the 3 mile reef this morning and had my bag limit of tailor in no time the fish aren't too big about 35-45cm. So much weed around I could only fish one line.
Some lads up the beach had a flat battery and were half up a sand dune so I pulled them out and gave them a jump start. They gave me a few beers for my troubles so I can have some tailor and beer for breakfast, what a great start to the new year

Slide fishing setup - the basics
Submitted by Sharktale on Thu, 2011-12-29 14:57The aim of sliding is to get big baits out 80 - 120m from the shore. I follow 2 principles, your gear needs to balance and if you're hunting lions - be prepared to find them. I'll address the basics for those interested in taking it on:
The rod:
You'll be casting weights from 4-9oz so the rod must be able to handle that. It must also have enough back bone to apply the drag pressure of your reel. It should also be long enough to clear the shore break. The rod must have 16mm Fuji or silimilar quality guides since your leader with the knot must go through it.
The reel:
You'll need about 500-700m of line (0.50mm mono, or 500m of braid topped with 0.5mm mono). Reason for 0.5mm mono is that it needs to withstand the friction when sliding the bait out.
You need a very good drag to apply constant pressure of 9-11kg during the fight.
Leader:
We use a 1.2mm x 9m wind on leader. This attached to the main line with a bimini and modified cat's paw. The leader is to assist in handling the fish on the shore and also to prevent sharks and rays cutting the leader during rolling. The leader is attached to the SWIVEL on the stopper ring by using a 3 turn figure 8 knot. The reason why we attached the leader to the swivel is the slide will "sit" on the swivel instead of directly on the knot when the fight is on. Depending on the leader material a thimble can be used.
Sinker:
We attach 25lb mono from the stopper ring to the sinker (about 0.5m). The breaking strain of the sinker line should be about half of your main line to enable you to break it if you get stuck. This will prevent you from losing the whole rig. the sinker needs to be heavy enough to anker the bait in the conditions your fishing. Size of the bait and sea conditions will determine the size you're using. The sinker needs to have 1.6mm (up to 6oz) and 2mm (8oz +) spring steel wires as anchors. These needs to able to give way when pulled hard. The wire "legs" must be at least 100mm long.
Slide:
The slide needs to be of at least 1.6mm 316 stainless spring steel. It needs at least 4 turns in the coil. Slides fitted with 3/4 to 1oz weights slides better. A bead or spacer near the clip will prevent the slide from being damaged if a fish is hooked. Attached to the slide is a 600mm to 1m bite trace consisting of 150 - 400lb multi strand ss trace wire. We attach the steel trace with either a fig 8 or flemish eye. It is fitted with 1 or 2 hooks. The top hook is snelled and the bottom a flemish eye or fig 8. It is always good to add a pink skirt for a bit of movement and colour. Hooks needs to match the bait. Large circle hooks of 3x wire is good. Circle hooks is better cause it hooks on the edges of the mouth thus enabling releasing a healthy fish. The hooks always needs to sit "proud".
Baits:
Baits needs to be fresh (or alive) and needs to match what is in abundance. Bull herring accounted for a large bronzy. 30cm plus tailor will attrack both sharks and big mulloway. The bigger, more alive and the fresher the better.
Technique:
If there is weed (even small bits) forget it. Cast the weight out. Pick up slack straight away. Let the sinker settle in for about half and hour while you prepare the bait. Lower the main line and attach the slide with the bait. Bring the rod upright and let it slide untill hitting the shore break. Work your rod backwards and forwards in short strokes. Pause if a wave hits the slide. Continue untill the slide disappears under water then change to longer strokes. Do this for about 15min. If you think it is at the stopper go another 5min. If the slide is not at the stopper you might get burned of. If your sinker dislodge - start over. Keep your main line tight and place the rod in the stand. Loosen the drag and set the ratched/clicker.
Have your rod bucket/gimbel belt, torch, pliers etc at hand (and the esky with bubbly stuff). You might go for a 500m walk up and down the shoreline. If you are using circles, don't strike. If your line goes slack, pick it up and wind like hell untill you reach the stopper.
The setup I found most common is a 13ft 6-8oz rod, 500m of 0.5mm mono, 11kg drag pressure, 130lb wind on leader, slide with 0.8m 200lb bite trace and 20/0 circle or 12/0 j-hooks.With a 8oz weight we can get a 30-40cm tailor or salmon 100m from the shore fairly easy.
ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE.

avoiding the bottom
Submitted by Abz on Sat, 2011-12-17 16:19Hi guys,
i wanted to know how would you avoid the bottom when fishin of the beach, i have found that i tend to pick up alot of rays and some shark picking up the bait but these are not what i am after.. i wanna be able to suspend the bait a little above the floor. if you were to use a sinker on a 3way swivel and your hook on the side wouldnt it hit the floor anyways since the angle is not straight up like in boat fishing? in the beach your basically at the same level to where your casting.
can anyone give me some advice or ways to setup my beach rig please
appreciate the help
cheers

wedge or wilbinga on wednesday night?
Submitted by cuthbad on Sun, 2011-12-11 20:01Finally found myself a 4x4, picked up my pajero on thursday and gave it a run at lancelin today. Now im keen to get out on the beach for an overnighter. Thinking wedge or wilbinga on wednesday night, tailor/bait fishing in the arvo, soak a big bait into the night, then a quick fish in the morning.
Relatively inexperienced 4x4 driver though so was thinking a second car would be a smart move. Anyone else thinking of heading up that way?
If not then I might just give wedge a go solo, wouldnt tackle wilbinga by myself but wedge had pretty solid sand last time I was up there so should be okay to get down along the beach a bit and back hey? Working nights and weekends for a while so wednesday night is my shot, pretty keen to make the most of it.....
Cheers
