Abu Garcia Mag HS 7000IC3 Round Ambassadeur Baitcast Reel
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Sat, 2011-10-29 09:11Hey everyone;
I am looking to aquire the ABU for my WAFT Garrick 14ft - light / meduim - 3oz / 5oz outfit.
I have read quite a few reviews worldwide and this reel has only received great write ups!!
Who on the forum has one and what are your experiance with this reel? Especially when talking about casting ability and if the level wind is really that necessary on the reel?? I would most probably take the entire inner frame out and replace with a black wiffle spool / or keep std and replace with a std ABU non level wind inner frame spool.
Cheers

Official Report - OVER NIGHT Fishing Comp supported by the Tackle Shack
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Thu, 2011-10-27 21:24Official Report - OVER NIGHT Fishing Comp supported by the Tackle Shack
Date: Saturday 22 October / Sunday 23 October 2011
Rondevu point: Tackle Shack
Time: leave Tackle Shack at 1pm, then meet with fellow anglers at 10th Light Horse Trail, Wanneroo.
Rules: Fishing from arrival at Wilbinga until 0800am Sunday morning. Prize giving at Rondevu point Wilbinga 0900am.
All anglers arrived at the Tackle Shack, fairly spirited, with tales of the big one they lost and the big one they were going to catch overnight with showings of traces and hooks, sinkers and tackle equipment that may be used for 1000 pound monsters, and in-between we had a Welshman who seemed quite graceful in show casing how far some rods can bend. Bruce from Tackle Shack were kind enough to show case his bbq skills in supplying much needed energy for the anglers, in the form of bbq ribs and sausages.
We moved in convoy to meet fellow anglers at the 10th Light Horse Trail at about 2pm. We arrived at the Wilbinga destination and within an hour the rain started and it soaked us for a good hour and a half. Quite a sight as most fisherman were diehard, spread along the beaches, in their attitudes to try get the first catch of the day.
A lot of action between 5pm and 8pm as the fish came on the bite with some good sizes in both the edible and non-edible classes. From about 10pm we had the “older folk” that enjoyed their hot chocolate before being tucked safely and “cozy” into their swaggers.
At 3am some action as stingrays and a lost tailor were caught. Then arrived 430am when most anglers got up to get ready for the tailor bash. No sooner than 5am and the first tailor were caught with the old boys Sherbie / Colin showing some skills in bagging 2 tailors each quickly.
By 730am we were packing and getting ready to head to the Wilbinga Prize Giving Rondevu Point.
Competition:
All anglers that participated in the competition side of the event had to complete a Record that identified the species caught with records of the length and time caught. The winners were identified by the amount of species and size. 8 Species in total: Sharks, Stingray, Tailor, Mulloway, Herring, Silver Bream, Flathead and Whiting.
Total fish recorded on the day:
Bronze Whaler x 4
Shovel Nose Ray x 1
Blue Spotted Eagle Ray x 2
Gummy Sharks x 2
Port Jackson x 2
Black Smooth Ray x 1
Tailor x 2
Whiting x 2
Competition Prize Winners;
Well done to all prize winners. It was a close call between the first three places.
1st Place $200.00 and a set of Hella Spotlights
Blou Walvis (name now changed to Blue Whaler)
2nd Place $200.00
KWAZULU
3rd Place $150.00
RAGBAG
Our thanks to all anglers who took part in the Over Night Beach Fishing Competition supported by Tackle Shack. We would like to say thank you to Tackle Shack for their support in this event and Uncle Sherbie for his diehard dedication and RAGBAG for his knowledge in these types of events.
Now for the next one!!

Surf casting help.
Submitted by holth on Thu, 2011-10-27 16:32Hi guys, had some issues the other night while beach fishing, twice over the course of the night l had my wind on leader get caught up in the 1st guide causing a break off during casting.
1st time was my albright getting caught on the guide. l switched over to a back to back uni which worked well until my bimini got caught up.after that l decided just to tie my main line straight to the swivel.
Before you respond heres a few things that may be relevent.
Having not beached fished for many years l use to use mono and not bother with a wind on, but going to braid l thought l would give it ago.l have no problems tying my knots
its a new reel Saltist 6500 with 30lb braid, the spools pretty full and my mate thinks its to full. Can that be an issue? Leader was 60lb black magic
The rods an old alvey rod 12ft 9 wrap MT lve just had reguided and turned into a spinning stick.
Being a short butted rod l still use the alvey style cast, Can my casting style cause these issues?
My mate was using a similar set up and has never had problems with this.
Does the length of the double play a part.?also l had the leader 3 times on the spool for casting.
Any info guys would help as my fingers abit raw from casting with the braid.
cheers Paul

Low Stretch Mono
Submitted by 499 on Fri, 2011-10-14 11:32Ok folks just seeking your recommendations on low stretch mono. I used to use a product called shimano technium which was $40 per 300m but shimano stopped importing because was to $$$ for the local market and no one was buying it.. (if any1 knows where i could find some would be very gratefull) the best line ive used so far
If i could find this again id buy it as it had about 10% stretch which is low for a mono line, had very good abrasion resistance and came in 40lb which is the minimum for me. I need line thats min of 40lb. Braids can have up to 3/5% stretch so effectivley had round the 8% mark which is great.
Any recomendations for line and please dont suggest platypus low stretch as ive used this b4, its hard brittle line and busts at the knots too often for my liking and casting style.................and please dont suggest braid as its not what im asking for cheers in advance

Perth Newbie - Metro Tailor Beach Fishing
Submitted by Captured1 on Sat, 2011-10-08 11:59Hi folks,
I have been in Perth about 12 months,I am from the UK originally. You locals dont know how lucky you are, miles of great coastline and good weather, with the possibility of catching a great variety of fish.
Anyway I have been hitting the metro beaches for the last 12 months with not much luck until recently(last few weeks actually).Found a good spot( will reveal sometime soon if anyone is interested) by accident and been nailing some decent Tailor (I think) I am hesitant to say decent, as I dont know what is the average that you guys catch around Perth, but I am happy and they are leagal so thats all that matters I suppose.Anything is decent when you have caught nothing but the odd small Flathead or Herring when putting in the effort and numerous hours week in week out.I suppose trial and error plus TV and Mags is the reason for my improvement.Dont laugh, you have to learn somehow,I had nobody to show me ! Dont get me wrong I have fished for years, river trout on the fly rod, and the odd bit of float fishing on a lake ,but beach casting is all new.
What is the average size Tailor around Peth out of interest?
I suppose you could say "I had all the gear and no idea" up until recently.I think I am starting to get the hang of it,but a long way to go.The next target is the might Mulloway I reckon,I have never even seen one apart from on TV or in a Mag,but I am a determined fellow, so I will keep you informed and dont rule me out just yet. These are the a few of the Tailor I have been catching recently.I caught 6 last night, but returned 3 of them as only needed enough for a feed for me and the kids today.I think the biggest was about 52cm and the others were all about 40-45cm.Not sure what the weighed I, dont have scales but they had a few decent fillets on them.
Any Mulloway advice would be helpful,Location,Rigs,Baits and tides etc !
Not teaching anyway to suck eggs I hope, but this might of helped me out a few weeks back=
For those interested these were caught on Paternoster(I think) rig I made.Weight at the bottom 100g breakaway with 2 x 5.0 Owner snelled hooks on the dropper.Half a Garfish tail end or head it doesnt seem to matter much.Cast out about 50m.The stationary take is savage, and I have also found that sometimes a slow retrieve entices hits too.I will keep you updated on my progress going forward and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Swan River Mulloway
Submitted by Graeme76 on Fri, 2011-10-07 18:04Thinking of heading out in the next week to try for a few Mulloway & was just wondering if anyone has been getting into any lately & what section of the river have they had success? Not specific locations, (I know better than that) just general eg: fremantle, perth waters, canning etc. I asked the staff at my local Bluewater but they said it was quite & probably a bit early making me think the river mouth is the best bet.
Also if anyone can tell me quickly the best place to park at Canning Bridge so I don't get fined would be great. I went there the other day for a fish but there was no parking signs all over the place so I ended up a bit further along. Sorry for the seemingly dumb question but I'm new to Perth & only just starting to get to know my way around.

exmouth
Submitted by seado3232 on Fri, 2011-10-07 12:19Hi, am new to the forum and also a southerner but pls dont hold it against me.
Heve a road trip planned for early november and will be driving from perth to Broome with a mate who is moving up there for work. We thought we would try and make the most of it and try and wet a line on the way. We are both pretty keen fishos and have decided to stop up at exmouth for a few days and am just trying to get some info on the place. Thinking that we will try and camp at pilgramunna as have heard the fishing can be quite good there and camp ground is only a short walk to the beach (means we can fish at night also)
Anyway was just wondering if anybody had any tips on the area like fishing gear needed, lures, bait, best times to fish or anything at all that may be helpfull. Have done a fair bit of fishing up in the Northern Territory and am assuming the fishing is similar.
Anyway hope to hear from some of you, Cheers.

Tailor Fishing - Best Rig?
Submitted by Chrono90 on Wed, 2011-10-05 09:33Hey Guys,
What is the best rig for catching tailor from the beach? I usually use a star sinker and triple gang hooks, but not much joy.
I have far more luck using a halco twisty.
Also - what's the best bait?
Cheers.

Proposed New Landbased Fishing Club
Submitted by kwazulu on Tue, 2011-10-04 15:08
Northern Perth LBG Fishing Club
Club Objectives
1) To bring together like minded individuals who enjoy fishing from the rock and shore and catching the larger species of fish, including sharks and rays. Fishing will not be limited to the larger species only.
2) To share knowledge between members, including rigs, tackle and locations.
3) A place to meet new friends.
The club will be based in the Northern suburbs of Perth (base still to be decided). Social fishing meets and competitions will be primarily held on the Northern Metro beaches of Perth and mid North Coast. A couple of trips away will be arranged each year to areas such as Quobba, Wagoe, Steep Point and the South Coast during the salmon runs.
Once we have determined the interest we will set up a steering committee which will then draw up a set of club rules for members to adhere too. Depending on the numbers a committee will then be selected to co ordinate monthly competition dates and annual trips away as well as having the authority to accept new members or dismiss members who do not uphold the ethics of the club.
Members can join no matter where they may stay in Perth but please note that the majority of the meets will be held on the Northern Perth metro beaches. There will be no annual fees payable however there may be a set nominal fee payable (yet to be determined) for each monthly completion which will go towards prizes, BBQs, fuel and our annual trips away. The number of monthly meets each individual attends will determine how much they will need to contribute towards the annual trips away. The more you attend the less you contribute.
Minors are welcome to join but at least one of their parents must be a member and accompany them during competitions and on trips away. The club will not be responsible for the safety of minors.
If you are interested in joining the club and being a member of the initial steering committee then please send myself (Kwazulu) or RAGBAG a personal message (PM) with the following details –
1) Name
2) Age
3) Suburb
4) 4x4 (yes or no)? (Not a necessity but the more the better).
5) Contact details (Phone and Email Address).
It is important to note that this club will in no way be affiliated to or run through the Fishwrecked site however all club reports and photos will be posted on Fishwrecked.

Secret Harbour Gummy run
Submitted by pauldoohan1 on Sun, 2011-09-25 10:11Headed to my local for a late afternoon into the evening session last night. The bulk of the weed that had pretty much shut down the fishing at Secret Harbour has moved on so after selecting which gutter to fish in I was feeling optimistic. The last few weeks bait fish have been really hard to come by, normally I'd have a live bait bucket full of Whiting and Mullet before it got dark but again I had nothing and had to resort to Plan B, frozen Servo Mullet.
Around 8pm the wind dropped and the Gummies came out to play, hooked and landed 3 in the space of 45 min and lost one thing that went head shaking bat sh!t crazy. No idea what the crazy thing was, but if a Snapper and an Eagle Ray had a child I think I hooked it.
I kept one of the Gummies and returned the others, great night and the freezer is full again.
Excuse the picture the camera was on a timer and the Gummy had just kidney slapped me, note to self: don't take photo with live Gummy, they are very strong.

Windmills for tailor this time of the year?
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Fri, 2011-09-16 00:08I'm heading down to Yalls next weekend and am hoping to squeeze in a tailor session or two. I've been looking through some old posts and Windmills has come up quite a few times.
Can anyone who knows better give me an idea on whether it's worth trying for tailor there this time of the year, and if so what the ground is like there - is it lures only, baits only etc? It doesn't look like there's too much sand through there?
Any advice would be appreciated.

throwing livies off the rocks on incoming tide
Submitted by flyingdutchfisherman on Mon, 2011-09-12 11:00Hey guys, I'm just wondering how you guys throw livies off the rocks on an incoming tide.
I use a float with a mullet under it with a trace of a meter or so, but the mullet comes always back and smashes on the rocks.. Mullet doesn't like it that much and the livie dies quick..
Whats the best way? I would like to have the bait on the surface for macks and queenies. But maybe the best way is to put a sinker on it and chuck it out and let it swim on the ground?

And the people that dont have 4x4 can put your name down as a fishing buddy
We will have prizes for the best fish, Maybe a 1st 2nd and 3rd But that still need to work that out at later date
We will have to pay to enter the fishing comp and all the money will go to the prizes
And we will be fishing the open beach not the reefs, So we can all stay close by each other
The date will be soon, Only need to check the moon and tides
It will be a saturday afternoon to sunday morning Which should suit all fisho
This is how i see it...... All fish will be weighed in total length per fish. If you want to catch and release more so with sharks and rays you will need to have a photo of the species on a brag mat or some sort of fish/tape measure with photos to confirm the size and a couple of witness's which shouldnt be a problem as we will all be fishing together.
Biggest shark
Biggest stringray
Biggest mulloway
Biggest tailor
Biggest herring
Biggest whiteing
And the more people we get the better prizes money
Your input would be nice
herbie
The date is 22nd 23rd of october----- Leave the shack at at 1pm sharp And head to the truck stop on wannaroo road And try and keep us all togeather, And hope to start fishing at 4pm till 8am sunday And entry fee is 20 dollars all money on prizes,
