SP's at Wagoe?
Submitted by scere_182 on Wed, 2011-04-13 08:49Gday,
Im heading to Kalbarri for our annual Wagoe Weekend next week... recent reports seem to say not much has been on the bite with baits from the reefs... ballooning will be on the cards if the easterlies show up but that only lasts a few hours or so if at all.
So i was thinking of taking a different approach this year and maybe working a few plastics off the reef.
Just like to know if anyone has ever given it a go before? and with much success?
I'll be spinning metals for mackeral and poppers/ stickbaits for tailor... the usual stuff but thought this maybe a viable option with the variety of fish that i've previously caught from there.
Any light in the matter would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Wind / Water conditions for Land Based Fishing / Perth Metro & North Perth
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Tue, 2011-04-12 12:35I was wondering what opinions / criteria the members would have for going down to the beach for a cast. What would you look for as your "ideal" conditions?
(This specifically for the Perth Metro / North Perth area. The reason I'm asking - I have seen people cast from the beach with a easterly behind them and no wave / water action. The water colour was clear. This made me question as to what the ideal conditions might be for Perth and surrounding. My opinion is that you would want some wind in your face and I prefer brownish / dark blue colour with a nice wavey / not yet chopping action. This seems to spark some action in the water.)
1. What would you rate to be the ideal wind conditions.
2. Secondly, would the colour and water action play any influence where you would cast?
Cheers

Fishing Kalbarri... Questions???
Submitted by Bungel on Mon, 2011-04-11 21:27Hi there,
Looking at heading away again, and just wondering about vehicle access for Kalbarri. Im in the midst of looking for a solid mid 90's Patrol or 80 Series, but not sure if i will get something sorted in time for my next RnR break.
I would like to head north if possible, but just not sure about doing it all in a small Hyundai Excel.
What is the access like to the coastline up there and to some of the better fishing grounds? Im keen for some walkin spots to nice rocky ledges.. but is a 4x4 necessary for doing so up that way???
Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
George.

OH high speed spin setup ?
Submitted by mattgreen on Sun, 2011-04-10 11:14G'day guys,
Wondering if anyone has any advice on some decent overhead spining blanks and what's the latest reels to suit ?
Prefer a blank around 11ft as this personally gives me max casting distance. Have been looking at a calstar blank but also open to off the shelf rods. Was trying to get my hands on an 11ft Tiralejo but they have since sold out where i was looking.
Will be used for spinning the rocks up north for mackies and tuna's and prob run 10-12kg thread and stay with mono.
Would love to get a big silver mack attack on a chunk of metal just like they did in the old days.
cheers

Need Urgent Advice :)
Submitted by Chrono90 on Fri, 2011-04-08 09:26Hey Guys!
It's Friday! Yaaaaaaaaay.
Going fishing tonight with two other mates, we're taking swags, as we're sleeping at the beach.
Thing is, we don't have access to a 4WD, So we need a spot where we can sleep in the dunes ;) or similar where it is within Walking distance from where a RWD car can park.
We're chasing big tailor and stuff like that, so it has to be a good spot for that!
Anyone know a place that suits my needs!?!?!?!
Cheeeeeers!!

Non return clips - I'm an ignoramous!
Submitted by buschy on Thu, 2011-03-31 18:26Hi all,
Planning to use non-return clips next weekend down in Yeagarup in an effort to get my bait beyond the surf. I'm a complete novice and this will be a first for me. Attaching the rig and sinker is simple enough - but can anyone tell me how to attach the clip to the mainline? Does it need to be wound around the 'spring'?
Also, for those with experience slide baiting is there anything I should look out for or any general tips / advice you can provide?
Thanks,
Buschy :-)

Submitted by Mitch300491 on Mon, 2011-03-28 11:09Hi Guys,
Thinkin about going away for the long weekend and fishin. Obviously probs a bit late to book some good spots now...
Was thinking maybe trying fishing for trout for the first time. Would it be a good time to try that anywhere around Perth for a holiday??
If not, what would you recommend around that time a year for a good fishing trip?? (landbased, not boat)
Thanks,

2 on 2 off - what to do....
Submitted by mrwinta on Sat, 2011-03-26 22:50I am fortunate enough to be on a project doing 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off so I get a lot of time to spend doing my own thing at home and with a very understanding wife with a crap taste in TV programs, I am looking at places not too far from Rockingham to take the 4x4, rods, esky and the swag on week days while my mates with real jobs are busy... I get away to augusta, walpole, denmark, pemberton or even up to lancelin, jurien, port dennison etc as often as I can but I was thinking is there any closer spots to go to for a night on my own? been to white hills a few times but does any body know any other places to explore to try for tailor, mullas or even sharks?
I get home on Monday so if there is anybody in the same situation and would like to get away for a night or two... let me know.... Cheers...
You got to admit this is way better than sitting in on a week night watching My Kitchen Rules etc!

60lbs of mulloway magic
Submitted by young_yakker on Sat, 2011-03-26 15:59After we had arrived and set the first set of baits i decided to go have a chat to a couple of blokes next to us to see what had been happening recently and to see if they had got one of theese elusive creatures but they hadnt got anything so we started talking about how crap up north has been and how the water is so hot.
About 45 minutes after sunset i hear my mate screaming BRAD BRAD BRAD so i do the 50 sprint to my rod as i get to my rod nothings happening so i tighten the drag and start winding fast then i come up real solid with huge head shakes and screaming runs. In one of the runs it took over a hundred meters. As im fighting the fish my mates line gets tangled with mine and i thought disaster, but with him walking with me it was fine.
But then there was another bloke fishing just next to us, i yelled can ya bring in ya line but he didnt and i ended up with two lines tangled around mine but this wasnt going to stop me. Eventually i had one massive knot in the two lines so i couldnt even wind so when the fish would run i would run into the water and when it stopped running i would run up the beach.
After about 15 minutes the fish was starting to tire , and becoming easier to bring in. as the fish was in about a foot of water the people helping me land the fish were saying its a shark its a shark, and i thought it could be the way it fought as it went harder than all my other fish including my sharks. but after a gaff cleanly got it and my mate grabbing its tail it was finally landed and safely on the beach.
I let out a few huge screams of joy and went and thanked everybody who helped me land it. the fish was caught on my new setup i got for spinning for macs and was the first fish caught on it.
It weighed in at 27kg/60lb.what a great fish and experience as well as having so many people willing to help me land a fish of a lifetime.
im so STOKED CANT BELIEIVE IT. it also took twenty minutes to land

Tackle Backpack for Landbased Fishing
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Sat, 2011-03-26 11:29I'd thought I would share this option of carting your tackle around the beach. If you are a fishing junkie like me, then mobility plays a huge part in getting quickly to the best spots around the beach area.
This is a aluminuim frame riveted together, with a ammo box for all your tackle gear. I use a 18l cooler box for my bait and cold drinks. PVC piping to the side can take a rod each. This is by far the easiest way I have come across for mobility, whether your fishing from the beach or rocks. Looks heavy - but depends what you take with. Plan your day at the beach. Can easily go 2km - 4km with this backpack without having a haert attack from exhaustion - ha ha!! Besides all my gear on my back, I have a stainless steel rod spike in each hand that makes walking easier.
To give you an idea what fits into the ammo box;
First aid kit. 2 x rolls leaderline. 6 - 7 sinkers (6oz to 9oz), steel wire, tackle box with deviders for hooks, swivels ect. 8 x Sliding rigs in folding roll up bag. 2 x knives. Scissors. Tooth picks. Ghost string. 2 x Reels. 2 x pc's foam. Pliers. Sunblock. And then some space for any other add on's.
In my cooler box I might have 1kg sardines, 500gr squid, 3 x tuna heads, 2 x blue mack and 2 x 500ml cool drinks.
(sounds like a menu from Hog's Breath LOL)
Tight lines.

Inexpensive - made my own rod dryer / finisher..
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Sat, 2011-03-26 10:54Used a disco ball light as main rotating motor - took light cover off and modified to fit pvc 5cm tube. With main wooden support and 2 x "V" wooden support brackets. My 1st go at this and I am quite surprised how easy and effective this little project has been. Finished 2 x rods, a 10ft surf and 6ft boat rod. Fitted new guides, finished with epoxy. What a gem.

getting friends onto fish... my night on a northern beach
Submitted by cuthbad on Sat, 2011-03-19 01:03wasnt sure what to call this post, since it wasnt an overly succesfull night all things considered.... From personal experience though when you invite a friend to come fishing its a fair bet your gonna catch sweet f all lol.
Late last year I went to exmouth with some friends, and apparently my best mates partner got the bug. On a night out a while back she was telling me she wants to give this shark fishing thing another go. I said yea no worries should be easy they are everywhere atm. It wasnt till the next day when I sobered up I realised the pressure I had put myself under.....
So I told her to meet me and a mate down at my most productive spot. Had been there a bit over an hour when my herring got smashed. I grabbed the rod, set the drag and passed the rod over to her, she did a great job after a fairly decent run and started gaining line back. Only had to take the rod from her during some of the more challenging climbs across the rocks and wasnt long till she landed her first metro shark. Not too bad a size at that.
After this I had one more run which didnt turn out well. My sinker never came loose and the hooks never set properly. I nearly got burnt off during the run destroying a good 20m of my line.... oh well cant win them all.
A while later later seb had a pickup on his rod. We knew straight away it was a ray. He let it run under a fair amount of pressure, but after about 200m of line had been stripped we knew it was one of the resident lochness monster size rays. When I started stressing about the amount of line he had left I said "mate, your gonna have to start putting the hurt on soon" he tightened down the drag and tried to take some line. This just resulted in another monstrous run stripping another 70 or so metres and had me almost pissing myself laughing, since we have both been in this situation before with these unstopables. Long story short, the line busted off on reef afer a bit over an hour fighting...
Good fun night out, and great to get my friend onto a fish. Well done Bec if you read this :-)

To live bait or not to live bait
Submitted by old salt on Thu, 2011-03-17 08:39Hey fellas,
Is live baiting worth the effort when you are targetting bread and butter species like salmon or tailor particularly when they are clearly visible and shy? Or are the results virtually the same as using popular dead baits?
If any of you do live bait how and where do get them? With a cast net I presume and do you need a license to catch them from shore?

11ft penn slammer with penn 760ss reel combo, Mono or Braid?
Submitted by TonyT on Fri, 2011-03-11 09:16hey all,
Im probably a less than average fisho , still learning the ways here....
I only have 2 sets of rods, a small light/flicky 7ft outfit which i get on with fine and my 11ft penn slammer combo /760ss reel which i got at a good price from ranger last year. I bought this rod as more of a general purpose rod, eg, surf fishing with sinkers/ lures etc. the bloke said this would be sufficient enough even when hooking a big fish....?
The problem i have is he put 30lb braid on, and to be honest i've never got along with it, maybe it was a cheap / crap one, (not sure what make it was) still cost me 80 bucks tho. Its the 1st time i ve used braid as always used mono before, the braid to mono knots frustrate me, some are ok some not.
Basically i prefer mono, but what i want to know, would i be making a mistake if i put mono on this reel?
Is this reel meant to be used with braid only? I dont really target specific fish, and i know I should really, but sometimes i just use ganged hooks with a mulie with a star sinker, other times a big tailor head, and then sometimes throw some lures with it.
Im no pro so i cant cast a mile etc,but will it effect its performance? i just want to spend more time in the water rather than tying bloody knots ha.
Also i dont get out as regularly as id like to so when i do, i want to hopefully have a good sucessful session, with out the braid knot slipping or braid breaking when i hit a snag or reef/rock.
Would it be worth buying a spare spool? and running 1 braid, 1 mono? whatever happens i'll be changint the braid i've currently got spooled at the moment.
If so any recommendations on good priced mono or braid that wont break the bank will be much appreciated.
I will be looking at buying another combo later on , a light 1 for tailor /salmon etc, but when funds permit.
Any help much appreciated.

Braid Casting
Submitted by nightfish on Mon, 2011-03-07 20:39Can anybody please tell me what the secret to casting a Mono wind on leader is? I have 15kg Braid attached to 22 Kg Mono Leader and every second cast creates a loop in the braid or a knot that stops the cast dead on a runner.
I have tied with an improved albright trimmed as close to the knot as possible.
Any help would be great! stop me pulling $80 worth of braid off and replacing.

Land based Hammer
Submitted by cuthbad on Sat, 2011-03-05 01:05Headed down to my spot on a northern beach tonight which has been producing really well recently, with a couple of bronzies or black tips most outings. Couple of big rays as well, though im still only landing about half of the really big rays I hook up to. Anyway, spent a good couple of hours down there starting off with skippy heads as bait, eventually downsized after a few bites without hookups. This proved to be the right move.
After sliding a whole herring out, maybe half an hour later my drag erupted under about 2kg of pressure, quickly grab the rod, thumb the spool and try to set the hooks.... well all that happened was that I burnt my thumb on a pretty solid bloody run! Crank down the drag and slowly bring the run to a stop... Wait, GONE! reel like hell for about 40m thinking what the f is goin on with so little pressure, sure enough eventually feel something. ON!! Fish was swimming towards me! soon as I feel this he takes off on another nice run, which gave me time to compose myself and plan where I am gonna land the fish, as he went to the left I headed across some rocks that way, yelling to my mate Seb (member name aalfred) yep its a shark!
started climbing down the rocks to the beach where we plan and land the fish before I start feeling dead weight! WTF? "Never mind mate must be a ray" I was actually convinced for a minute it was an eagle ray, despite the headshakes earlier in the fight I had never felt a shark hold its weight in the current like this, not a heap of weight but not the kinda fight you expect from a shark.
Around this time I was making my way down off the last of the rocks and took a stack, did pretty well keeping pressure on the line the whole time though lol. A bit like a drowning Aussie keepin the stubby out of the water. Anyway, my left knee took a bit of a beating but as soon as I was up and taking the fish through the surf I heard Seb call "Hammer head!". Being the first of this species that I have caught I was pretty excited and when Seb had leadered the fish onto the sand I was stoked.
Couple of high fives and the hooks were removed, pics were taken and the fish was released to swim away strong!
Very different fight to any other shark I have hooker. Big thanks to Seb for assistance and a great job leadering and landing the fish!
fish measured 158cm precaudal and 170cm total length.
