more shark rigs
Submitted by cuthbad on Wed, 2010-10-13 19:44Johns post on shark rigs was interesting, so gonna put some of mine up. Keen to see what other people are using as well!
First is my cast trace, for a whole herring, small tailor etc. Has a long sinker trace and modified sinker so the sinker can be clipped for casting like in the second pic, I find this helps the casting a fair bit.
Second rig is for sliding large baits, whole tailor (dead), large tailor heads/flap baits or or tuna heads.
Third is a very basic rig. single hook for sliding live herring, or small tailor. Probably gets used the most out of the three. If im sliding larger live tailor or snook ill add a second hook.
I nearly always use a heavy mono (100-150lb) leader of like 6-9 metres over the rig or if sliding another metre of steel between the stopper ring and the mainline/leader.
I like to use 210 or at least 130lb nylon covered steel, but its getting hard to find. Also prefer the black but giving the bleeding wire a go.
If anyone knows where to get heavy black nylon covered steel please let me know
cheers guys, let me know what ya think and any ideas for improvements
Adam
UPDATE: all the pics dissapeared during site upgrade, just noticed. Gonna put up my mac slide bait rig plus slide sinker.

Tailor
Submitted by fishingking on Tue, 2010-10-05 14:29Can someone please help me with tailor. i am going out to two rocks on thursday and going to target tailor with my dad. I have only ever caught 1 tailor which was really by luck because it was on a herring rig 3kg line at jurien bay, and it was about .5g. Now i have a new 12 foot beach rod and new reel so i want to target them at the beach. Can someone give me the best rigs, bait etc please.

Tailor Size
Submitted by downflyer on Sun, 2010-10-03 15:43Seen some many chopper caught lately, in Swan or off beach, they were all too small, around 25cm, just wondering why legal size is 30 since so many undersized wandering around. saw some guys throwing twristy at Narrows last night and got and keep some undersized as well. i got sized bream easily but seldomly got tialor over 30cm. never seen anyone releasing back undersize tailor. fisheries treat bream differently from tailor? as i saw some guy fined a grand by Swan for keeping 23cm bream. but never saw tailor breacher getting caught.

quick S bend report
Submitted by Rig on Wed, 2010-09-29 17:46Hi everyone
I went up to S bend for the long weekend which for me started on thurs night after work I left and headed up the new fantastic coastal road. I called in to a mates house in Dongara for a few beers and crashed on his couch moving on to S bend the next morning. After setting up my tent etc at the caravan park I headed down to Lucy's to fish the 11am high tide and then through to the late evening high tide. The gutter looked as great as I have seen it but as i suspected full moon shuts down the tailor action. I caught a few herring on dusk and used them as live bait. One herring got absolutely smashed in half and my bottom snelled 6/0 gamakatsu octopus circle got bent in half!!!!!! so dissapointingly that was the first day over. the next morning i fished slips hoping there would be some action there, some guys next to me got a few herring and a guy from my fishing club got a 20 kilo sambo not bad off the beach. Fellow Fishwrecked member Johnray rocked up mid morning so i took him on the S bend tour before the fishing comp kicked off at midday. Once again we based ourselves at Lucy's for merely a few herring and some guys next to us got a couple of undersize mulloway then a nice 6-8kilo version, saw a guy get one of the biggest buffies I have seen at 7.5 kilo. The following day we fished south, past the surf beaches where the gutters start for 1 shovelnose although i had a large tailor strike and miss at a whole herring i was winding back in on a paternoster rig.
The last morning of the comp we elected for a sleep in as did most of the crew but the guys who had a crack managed a few tailor to 1 kilo and some wirah cod which goes to show with the moon phasing out there would start to be a bit more Tailor action.
I have been a bit spoilt with my last couple of trips to the area with the tailor action being hot. I have still not landed a mulloway either I had a whole herring/scaley or fillet in the water for most of the time I was fishing so the quest for a LB mulloway goes on.
Either way fish or no fish great to be out on the beaches in a top location
cheers
Rig

I was thinking of doing a fishing trip down south in a few weeks to a place called bob's hollow south of margs and am after some more info on the place. I looked on google earth and there seems to be a track in. What species would i expect to come across there and is the area dangerous to fish with regard to swell. i also heard it is a bit of a hike

Maps for WA
Submitted by One Eyed Phil on Fri, 2010-09-24 15:33Just wondering if there are any maps avalable that list the varius places known for fishig spots?
I know some places have different names from different fishers, but I hear of places along the coast but have no idea where they are and they are not 'official' place names
Has anyone decided to put one together withe most popular names so dumb fishers like me can find the?

Bull shark
Submitted by pudzz on Thu, 2010-09-02 22:46hey peeps been a while since ive been bothered to get on the computer but heres what i got wednsday last week. off th beach in the sound

my first time seeing and catching a bull shark at first i called it for a blacktip but when in close it became more apparent it was not like any other shark i had seen before, caught many blacktips and bronze whalers before but this was soo much stockeyer just a rough estimate would be about 60kg roughly 5 to 5 1/2 foot in length and had plenty more grunt.
caught it on 15kg mono running sinker with a metre of 120pound mono wth a big bait circle 8/0 pinned in the corner of the mouth, bat was a pretty hefty live yellow eyed mullet or (pilch) as some people call it.
Out of the water for a few minutes fought pretty well left right left right up an down the beach pretty tired first attemp to release just tilted and sank belly up, i felt devastated thought it had died, picked it up and walked up and down the beach for about 5 minutes got some sort of responce but not much let it go went about 3 metres n did same again had to get up to my shoulders to pick it up again, so for the next ten minutes up and down the beach near the waves to get more of that oxygenated water going through its gills and sped things up abit running in the water (felt like one of the ladies that you seen at the pools doing workouts) still no responce not even a tail movement at a third time gave it a good push and it just snapped out of the trance it was in and powered off.
felt gr8 to see it swim off.

Fishing Conto's help
Submitted by Rig on Wed, 2010-09-01 09:45Hi Everyone
I am heading down to Conto's in october. i have surfed the area but never fished it.
From what i have seen the rocks near the surf break can be fished off and the beach also i suppose.
most of the coastline south from there appears deep and rocky/weedy ie not sinker material do people just suspend a bait under a float in these parts? or chuck lures?
Is the beach at the southern point worth a fish?
Any help/tips would be appreciated also what would i expect to catch down there that time of year. I would ideally like to be fishing for the bigger species in the area ie mulloway, tailor sambo's not so much bread an butter species
thanks

Land based rod options
Submitted by castamasta on Wed, 2010-08-18 19:33HI Guys
Just after opinions for a good rod, maybe in the 8-10ft range to match up with my stella 8000/50lb braid for some heavy duty land based work.
Rod would be used to chase some big pelagics on surface, slices and maybe big softies in the NW region.
All opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,GAV.
