Sliding Bait Rig
Submitted by Wes F on Sun, 2012-02-05 13:37Have been aware of sliding bait / flying fox rig setup's. Not 100% sure of full rig setup and using such a rig.
Firstly I know you need to cast a sinker (80 odd gram grapple) out and have it well secured on bottom.
Secondly a weighted bait is clipped onto this line.
Questions; What type of clip is used to secure weighted bait onto main line?
How is the best why to attach weight & what type of sinker/weight to use?
Should a barrel swivel be placed about 1.5 metres up from main sinker to stop bait from sitting on the bottom?
Is there any footage available to see a rig setup?
Have a 13 foot beach rod with a Alvey Elite surf 600BC 30 pd line mono
Plan on using a small float on dead baits & also trying to slide out live baits.
Hoping someone with some experience can give me some advice on the do's & don'ts.
Will ask at tackle shop next time I'm in one.

New to Perth fishing, first fishing excursion 04-02-12
Submitted by partypat on Sat, 2012-02-04 16:32Hi all,
Long time fisherman, 36 YO male. Have fished in NZ, a lot of surfcasting from the beaches, spinning and fly for trout, as well as a few boat trips. Due to my occupation I had a few trips to the tropics so fished vanuatu, fiji, East Timor, mainly casting lures from the shore but did the occasional small charter. Visited Australia a couple of times and had a great time up north for a few days chasing Barra out of Darwin both trolling and casting lures.
Spent a couple of years in the US (texas) where I fished a lot for bass.
Been in Perth now 2 years and finally wet a line this morning for the first time here.
Went down to Trigg at dawn, walked the beach/rocks and cast a few different lures for a couple of hours around the wash, gutters and channels i could see. Got nothing myself but saw a couple of bait fisherman catch a a fish or two from the rocks. Highlight of the morning was seeing 3 dolphin 50-100m offshore cruising back and forth.
I did a little research mainly on these forums before heading out but looking forward to getting out more often now. Great forum and I look foward to hanging out here.

Rockingham Area
Submitted by Ben82 on Fri, 2012-02-03 23:57Spent the last 2 days beach fishing, yesterday at Shoalwater and then today at the Long Point boat ramp.
Started out yesterday fishing the Penguin Island sand bar, lots of little pickers first hook up was a blowie so that was it with that spot. Packed up and went north up around the bay a couple of k's spent the next 4 hours fishing in what seems to be a nursery ended up landing around 15 to 20 sand whiting smallest about 80mm largest 150mm, 2 tarwine about 120mm and 1 flathead of around 120mm. Not a bad session really, sure beats catching shyte fish. All fish were released apart from one misfortunate sandy which took the hook alittle to deep but as it turns out tarwine really like whiting.
So with yesterdays session kind of successful with regards to species caught I ventured out in search of the larger specimens. I made the decision last night after looking at google maps to fish Long Point, I couldn't find vehicle access to the beach so ended up fishing at the boat ramp.
Today I came prepared with my Tld 25 trolling outfit setup for ballooning so first up out went a skippy skeleton, followed by the light gear and bang I was straight on to my first fish little sand whiting. Woo hoo I thought could be on to a good thing here, wow was I mistaken by about the twentieth trumpeter I was thinking what am I doing here and then my little pflueger asario screamed into life and a short while later I landed this monster
Long Tom? Correct me if im wrong. This capture instilled a fair amount of hope but it was short lived about another 20 trumpeter later I was pretty much over it, but what was I to do still had about another hour and a half til I had to go pick up my daughter so kept fishing. I decided I would walk out on the finger jetty and flick some lures around for a while then next thing I know zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!! off goes the TLD and here we go Usain Bolt eat your heart out, didn't know I could run that fast I was off the jetty and 100m meters down the beach in way less than the WR but was all to no avail what ever it was had drop the bait. That was about it for today another 10 or so trumpeter, looking forward to sunday hopfully get out in the boat metro spanyard here we come!!!

ROD options, for slidebaiting off the beach. ???
Submitted by Bungel on Fri, 2012-02-03 13:25Hows it going,
Just looking for some help with choosing a Rod for primarily using to Slide bait.
With my current reel selection, im looking at using my 6500 Saltist. So unless there is a rod out there capable of use with both spin and overhead reels... i will be looking for a Spin Rod. 12-14 foot, 13 being my ideal length....something able to handle 6 ounces cast weight.
Any help would be great..
Cheers.

First Metro Shark
Submitted by drifta on Tue, 2012-01-31 02:45Hey all,
Been trying for a shark for the last few weeks with no success except for last week when what I would guess was a 2m bronzy got off just as I went to try grab hold.
Went for a balloon tonight with the strong easterly forecasted and it didnt take long to the get the bait 200-300m out. I'd just sat down for a smoke an begun setting up the second rod when I had a nice run but not having used the reel I'd borrowed for the night I didn't get a hook up from not setting the drag correctly. Hoping the bait was still on I had a play with the drag and set it correctly and was lucky enough to get another run.
Took about 10-15min to get the hammerhead in and probably 5min to get my photo's and the hook out since it had pulled me 50m down the beach and I couldnt move to fast on the sand to fetch the camera and bolt cutters.
Think I spent about 20-30min (guessing) holding it in the surf as there was almost no sign of life left. At this point I was sure this was the end of me targetting sharks if this hammerhead died. Eventually she(?) gave a few tail kicks and was ready to swim off.
Not a monster by most peoples standards but I'm happy after all the hours I've put in this month! I'm guessing 1.6m since the rod is 5'9".
Cheers
Brett

Bremer Bay Report from the past weekend.
Submitted by Bungel on Fri, 2012-01-27 21:39Thanks for your information Buz. I ended up doing all my fishing out the southern end.. exploring all those 4x4 tracks.
Some absolutly mouth watering ledges out there... i could happily live there just for the fishing! :) and the people are wickid too.
Anyways... a few pictures.
Just the start of the beautiful looking water.
Got this nice little Sambo of about 10kg?? on my 12footer fishing 10kg braid. Brutal few runs... and a real scramble to get a mouth gaf shot fishing solo. Was lucky to have a nice rockpool close by to keep the fish in while i quickly sussed out the camera for a quick shot. Released and swam off strong. :)
Pulled a few nice Trevally out of there too, one of about 2kg. Also got a few herring. Kept them all alive in the rock pool, but decided against putting a livebait out as its a bit much when fishing solo. They all got released.
Got smashed by something with real nasty teeth a few times. even tried a double of 80lb with an 11/0 circle.. but that nearly got bitten through too. Didnt seem big though, maybe some sort of parrot fish??? not a fan of using wire traces, but might need to make a few light ones up.
Tried another spot which was a bit more exposed.. and was even able to get my partner Tracy fishing. Pulled alot of small trevally and heaps of herring. nothing big, but good fun on the light gear. Again decided against putting a live bait out.. but glad i didnt. The last photo shows a few of the 20+ pod of dolphins that came through. Beautiful sight, and great to experience.. even if the fishing wasnt too hot.
The Fantastic weather was very lucky from what i have been told. I will definatly be back there again, and hopefully with a couple fishing buddies and few better plans.
Choice area!
Cheers,
George.

New surf combo?
Submitted by Jimmy441 on Thu, 2012-01-26 22:06Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a new rod and reel for the beach mainly for chasing Tailor and Mulloway ect, closest I have at the moment is my 9ft Shimano Shore spin, but I want something bigger and I don't have a reel to even match that rod at the moment.
I was debating on whether I should go for the 10ft 6" Shimano rod, I had a feel of it in the shop and I really like the look and feel of it, obviously it's pretty much exactly like my 9ft rod except bigger.. but now I'm thinking that won't be big enough.. The thing is I'm not a big fan of super heavy gear, pretty much any type of fishing I do I try to go as light as possible because it's just more fun for me and I'm pretty unfit so casting heavy gear all day really gets me knackered.. :P
Anyway my budget is around $300 max for both a rod and a reel. I was looking at the Penn Spinfisher SSM reels, they seem pretty nice but I'm not familiar with the sizes ect and I don't have any nearby tackle shops to go have a look at em.. I really want the reel and rod to match perfectly in terms of size and balance ect. What's the Ugly Stick Gold 12ft like? (5-10kg) or what about the Wilson Australian Series MT Surf (12ft, 10-12kg) I really have no clue what to look what, that's why I need your help. :(
I appreciate any suggestions, if you want to ask any questions I'll be around, thanks for reading.

Ocean Beach Marina
Submitted by GS1984 on Wed, 2012-01-25 12:08Hello
I have recently moved back to Perth from a year overseas. I am currently living on oceanside prom looking over mullaloo beach I am really keen to start up fishing again and last night took my light gear down to ocean beach marina thinking there would maybe be some whiting or herring around but had no luck everybody seemed to be fishing for mullet using bread is this the best fish to target down there and if so what rig would you use I have tried catching mullet before but found it very difficult to get them interested in the bait.
I was thinking of maybe going down there with a bigger set up and bottom fishing from the small beach to the right of the marina in front of the club for tailor or larger fish has anyone tried this from this location?
cheers everybody any help would be appreciated

Soft plastics from the beach?
Submitted by axeten on Thu, 2012-01-19 21:35Hey guys,
Finally getting some fish. Went to Belvedere yesterday and got herring, tailor, skippy 3 rays and a flatty. Kept the flatty, threw the rest back.
My question though, has anyone had luck with the big (3 inch or so) soft plastics from the beach?
If so, which ones did you use? Thinking of trying some next time...
Thanks

Which LBG rod?
Submitted by Rik178m on Sun, 2012-01-15 17:35I want to buy an LBG rod to suit a Penn senator 114h2. I'll be using 50lb tufline braid. I want the rod to be 24kg plus and atleast 8ft long. Is a metal reel seat a must? Dont want rollers. Not looking to spend a fortune.
Will be used for ballooning, sharks and in the future, trips to quobba.
What do you guys recommend?

Going for Tailor
Submitted by npsherriff on Sun, 2012-01-15 17:34Hi guys new to the site and WA for that matter, so fishing here is quite different from back in Scotland. I Was fishing the beaches of the norther subs for tailor and hooked up on this nice eagle ray, not sure of wieght as forgot to pack the scales. It wasnt a huge fish but put up a fair fight. It took 3 attempt to get it to leave, but eventually swam back to sea.
Where are the best places to try for tailor, appreciate any marks to fish.
