Anzac Mullys
Submitted by Mitta79 on Thu, 2012-04-26 12:53I was able to get away from work a bit early on tuesday arvo and packed the family up to head up the coast for an overnight fish. The weather was awesome but the first few spots we looked at ahd a fair bit of weed so decided to keep looking for a spot were the weed wasnt as bad. We ended up driving for about a kilometer were we found a nice little spot right in the middle of the bay so we parked up got the camp set up and the fire going and had a few beers while we set up the rods. First baits in the water by 7pm we then decide to cook up some grub and sit back and wait for the fish to come. Just after midnight with nothing to show for bait changes every 15mins. I was dozing in my chair when my wife nudged me some reason and I looked up to see my rod bent over and reel screaming. she thought I was seeing things as I had just woken up but I knew if I didnt run I would have lost the fish. Got to my rod and I could feel the head shakes of a good mully, me mate matt came over with the gaff when it was just coming through the shore break and could see a good silver bronze shape in the knee deep water. We waited for the next wave and it was on the beach 12kgs of Mully.
After a quick high five I had rebaited and walked out to cast and was setting drag just as I was putting the rod in the rod holder it took off in my hands, I yelled out to Matt to come and grab this one as he had not caught a mully before, he was reluctant to take the rod but in the end he took over and proceded to fight the biggest mully for the night at 16.5kgs during the fight the fish crossed over my other rod twice so I decided to bring it in to make sure that he didnt lose his fish, I had just grabbed it out the rod holder and the bloody thing was almost ripped out of my hands and I was on again. This fish was 11kg and was released to fight another day. Matt was a super happy fisho and high 5's all round once his fish hit the beach.
Matts 16.5kg fisrt ever Mully
Released 11kg Mully
After the mully action things went quiet for about 2hrs until I had a big hit, I fought the fish for a 10mins and had it just behind the shore break when the line went slack, it was a bloody shark and it had bitten me off. We fished for another 1hr after that and decided to get some sleep. The morning was magic and the easterly wind was blowing just enough to send out a ballon. It took about 10 mins to ge the ballon out to where I wanted it and then set the drag and put the rod in the holder and headed up to camp to grab something to eat. The ballon had been sitting for about 10mins when my wife said the ballon had let go and was floating away. I knew that something had taken the bait but had not moved the rod at all, I grabbed the rod and wound up and struck the shark must have been just sitting there chewing on the bait. The fight was very short lived as it was only a small balck tip about 1mtr long. When I got it to the beach we found that it had also hooked it self in the tip of his tail so it really didnt stand a chance and was all but dead. I would have released it but it was in a bad way.
Sorry about the pics we left our camera at home.
All in all a very good anzac day with great friends and few fish to go home with.
Cheers

SW Salmon and Tailor
Submitted by MattMiller on Wed, 2012-04-25 12:23Hey guys, just a quick report.
Had a great morning today fishing a beach near Margs fishing with fellow forum member J_Doggy.
After a slow start playing with the ever present Herring we found a great little school of Salmon tailing on the surface. After pulling half a Doz they seemed to disappear for a few minutes but were replaced with some hungry Tailor with the biggest going well over 40cm. The Salmon made another brief appearance with me losing my new fav Salmon lure (Tango Dancer) to a cracker. Spewin!
Sorry but no pics, just a shout out to those wanting to know where they are

Just another Salmon report.
Submitted by cuthbad on Tue, 2012-04-24 20:53Havent posted a report in bloody ages, mainly cuz my car was out of action, so figured this would do.
Had a couple of days down in Albany a while ago. Had to miss the perth LBG club overnighter for it but seeing all the salmon reports coming in I decided to make the trip south. Did a heap of driving on the first day trying pretty much everywhere from two peoples bay all the way back down to salmon holes. Herring in the millions at two peoples bay with about a dozen chasing every lure I put out, but no sign of the salmon, pretty much the same at the next 5 or so spots I checked.
Got down to salmon holes late arvo and the beach was packed, people had trashed the place with beer bottles and salmon heads all over the place. Didnt like the idea of fishing in that mess, if I wanted to fish shoulder to shoulder I would have stayed in Perth. Watched the swell for a while and decided the rocks looked ok, got up there and fished for a bit with a little metal slice. Within 5 minutes the guys next to me picked up a good size salmon on a plastic and after seeing the effort it took and the danger they put themselves in trying to land the fish I decided this spot wasnt for me, so called it an early night.
Next morning went straight down to Shelleys beach. This is probably one of my favourate fishing spots in WA, not because its full of fish but because its so peacefull. Always a few people camping there who are happy to have a chat about whats been happening. Got to the lookout at the top and could see id found the salmon with a small school on the way past and one guy hooked up already. Quickly down to the beach and got set up, started with a small waxwing as the next school came through, with the guy next to me using some little metal. Neigher of us got a chase so quickly swapped to baitcasting mulies for the next school which was more succesfull.
Spent the whole day chasing small schools up and down the beach with mulies outfishing the waxwing 2 to 1 and no other lures getting any interest. Fished the small patch of reef at the far end in between schools and managed a few loners out of there.
In the meantime I slid out half a salmon on the heavy gear, didnt have much hope though as it was the middle of the day and I wasnt gettting it into very deep water. While I was sliding the bait another bloke came over and asked if I was the guy getting all the big bronzies (Chrisfish your famous in Albany lol) I said no but I knew who he was talking about.
No take on the shark gear and long story short I went back and did exactly the same thing the next day except in the rain and with much fewer salmon.
Good trip, well worth the drive. Would have been good to have a serious crack at the big bronzies but was fun to change it up and get some action on the lighter stuff.
Cheers

Dongara/Port Denison Beaches
Submitted by Andy P on Mon, 2012-04-23 22:34Hi... First post from a Pom in WA.
The wife and me are heading up Dongara/Port Denison way for a few days for the first time (fishing-wise) later this week, and looking for a bit of beach fishing - tailor, mulloway, snapper, shovels, sharks, rays - not that fussy as long as it pulls! Just wondering if any locals or fishos with experience round there would be kind enough to nudge me in the direction of some decent LB areas - or bits to steer clear of. Last time I passed through on the way up to Exmouth the beaches I saw were knee deep in weed, so hoping to miss that...
Any advice gratefully received - many thanks.
Andy

Perth LBG Angling Club Report
Submitted by kwazulu on Tue, 2012-04-17 22:13We fished our monthly competition last Saturday night with the boundaries being between Moore River and Lancelin. The sea and weather were both perfect however the weed was a bit trying at times. Some really nice fish were landed with most of the guys getting amoungst them. Fish landed included eagle rays, a black ray, a spinner shark, a wobby, numerous guitar fish and tailor. A number of large fish were lost due to the weed or hooks pulling. The highlight of the competition were the two mulloway landed, weighing in at 18.8kgs and 16.6kg caught by Tom and Wayne. All fish weights were calculated using the measurement to weight conversion tables.
A big thank you to 'The Fishing Shop' in Woodvale for kindly donating a gift voucher to the club for each of our monthly competitions, much appreciated.

Hamelin bay for Salmon?
Submitted by axeten on Wed, 2012-04-11 15:20Hey guys,
We are going to head to Hamellin bay this weekend.
Having never been there before and never chased Salmon before....
What do most people use to get salmon? Lures or just a Mullie on a set of gangs?
Has anyone caught any Salmon (or anything decent) at Hamellin bay in the last week?

Submitted by Dutchman on Sat, 2012-04-07 07:29Hi guys,
I'm new in Perth and i'm moving to Burns Beach.
I don't have a 4x4 and would like to know where i can do some good land based fishing for edibles. Maybe some areas that is easy to get too and where i can take the wife and kids with if i feel like it. Some areas within an hour's drive would also be appreciated.
Any tips on what to go for and bait to use ? Also want to try some squidding if possible ?
Looking forward to the replies.

Headlamp recommendations
Submitted by fishingaddict on Tue, 2012-04-03 20:03Hey all,
Am after a decent headlamp and was wondering what others had/recommended
I like the look of: Led Lenser H7 (180m max distance, 170 lumens, 75 hour battery assume on lowest setting)
Black Diamond Storm (70m max, 100 lumens, 36-200 hour battery, waterproof) I like the idea of being fully waterproof
anyways if anyone has one of these and can comment or recommend others that would be great, trying to keep under $100 something solid with good distance and flood.
Cheers

Pillie/Mulie gang attachment
Submitted by FishNChick on Tue, 2012-04-03 17:53I was watching iFish a few weeks ago and they were fishing for Australian Salmon in SA. They mentioned a way of attached the gang to the leader so that it would hold the pillie/mulie out and make it look like it was swimming...it wasn't just a regular knot around the eye of the top hook.
Can anyone shed any light on how this might have been attached and have any information on where I can get pictures or video so that I can repeat it?
Thanks heaps

Leeman/Dongara
Submitted by Kabrit on Tue, 2012-04-03 17:39Hi
This is my first post and I'm hoping I can get some advise from you more experienced fishos. I'm heading north next week for the first time and I would appreciate any info on what to target and what rigs would work. We're going to be landbased around half way between Leeman and Dongara. Any help will be hugely appreciated.
Hopefully my second post will include a couple of decent pics.

Green Head LB Any Good?
Submitted by Formerathlete on Tue, 2012-04-03 16:03Getting back into things after a long absence and I was thinking of trying land based somewhere between Jurien and Green Head over Easter. Happy to put in some hours for something toothy or scaley.
Any decent stretches of beach recommended? I might also throw the kayak on the roof of the 4x4 to get out and fish if conditions permit.
Also is camping tolerated through there these days? Certainly won't be leaving ANY rubbish or damaging the environment.
Cheers
