Ocean Reef 12/11/2016.  About a 2.5 m bronze whaler swam straight through the sounder beam.

Transducer questions

So I am about to upgrade my lowrance to a NSS9 system,

The question have is can i run the Simrad TM265LH 1kw chirp transducer on its own of do i need the BSM module as well? I have absolutely no idea about this techy stuff!

Cheers

Simrad to Lowarnce interconnects

Hi
Can the simrad evo2 and lowarance hds 9 be interconnected to share the same information?
They seem to both have the same yellow comms plug on each unit.
Just thought it would save buying another map sd card.

Bottom colour

Anybody using the bottom colour feature. I used it this weekend but not sure of what to make of it. It certainly separates the water column from the bottom but I'm wondering how much feature it takes out..

simrad out deep opinions

chrisG and I went out reallllllll wide sat in the perfect conditions to experiment with his simrad NSS9 evo2 and p79 in hull 600w 50/200hz transducer

little bit of preperation for some future deep dropping.

anyway here is a pic of what we manged to sound up (didnt fish the mark) doing 7 knots at time of pic, 350m up to 250m very quick.

so we are hoping the experts can give some feed back good or bad.

just a note, this is the first time either of us have tried to tune a sounder for the deep blue. the sounder did loose bottom not long after so 350m and extrodinary conditions seems to be the limits for this setup.

cheers anyway fellas, chrisG and gilly

shallow water shot - interpretations?

I was out crabbing a few weeks ago in the swan.  Between runs i had latched onto a public mooring near elizabeth quay.  Boat was stationary with the stern close to the mooring.  Saw this on the sounder.  Now, if i had been in deeper water i would have been excited by this.  To me it appears to be a surface predator swimming down towards some bait fish on the bottom.  But it could also be something like a flathead lying on the bottom and merely something sinking down through the beam.  What ever is heading down didnt put out a strong echo so it may have been a gobble guts for all i know.

Thoughts?

simrad BSM-3 TM265

I have done all the searching online and the hull truth. Just wanted to see if anyone here is using this set up and have any positives. Most of the stuff online relates to the issues of the BSM-2. I have the chance to hook this gear up to my nss9 at a resonable price and run along side the furuno 585. Is it worth the outlay or will the furuno still be better. Mostly for depths 100mtrs to 350mtrs. Cheers

A few Bunno NSS screenshots

A few pics taken off Bunbury. Simrad NSS7 with Airmar P66 transducer.

1st pic is at the artificial reef about 4 mile offshore. This is one of the reef modules. They are square but there was a decent sea running hence the lumpy appearance. The 200khz shot shows the vertical sides quite well. Plenty of baitfish around.

And this is a little way off that same reef. Caught lots of wrasse here, not much else. Solid arch at 7 metre mark possibly a Sambo passing thru?

One of my favourite features of this unit is the recording function. I record trips to and from waypoints (when I remember). Unforunately the Sonarviewer PC software is dodgy as hell but once you know its quirks I found it useable. Here is a screenshot from trip home. It is highly compressed due to the boats high speed but still shows useful info and I find it worth reviewing once I get home. Here you can see fish marked at over 40km/hr. I note those co-ordinates and next time I am nearby I can take a closer look to see if there is any worthwhile ground.

And this last shot is a school of sand whiting below with baitfish above. Took this pic with phone not long after installing unit coz I couldn't remember which buttons to press for screenshot. Taken on the drift. Whiting were THICK and we caught big fat 10inch+ sandies (often double headers) for almost an hour. Got a good feed and released dozens of smaller fish.

Simrad GO7

Anyone had a play with the new Simrad GO7 units yet.

I have a Simrad NSS9 evo 2 and really like the unit although it is to big to be flush mounted in the new boat I am getting. I was hoping the GO7 was pretty much the same unit without the dial or buttons and being a full touch screen unit. The unit will only be a GPS as I am running a Furuno 587 also.

Any thoughts or comments.

Cheers

Gps tracking line

anyone know how to turn the trail / track line on / off so I can see the route travelled on my chart screen?

i have a smart craft screen networked and it shows on the second screen when using the chart on that screen but can't figure out how to turn on on the SIMRAD nss screen

just bought a Simrad NSS12 Evo2

After months of back and forth I have finally settled on an NSS12 Evo 2. The big install will be this weekend and I can't wait to get out on the water to try it out. It is going onto my side consol Trailcraft Profish 510 so its a big screen on a small boat... I am going from a Navman TrackFish 6500 to this so basically crawling out of a cave into the real world.

Any advice on setup / install, do's and don'ts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

JJ

Steep point porn

This spot produced red emperor, baldies, pink snapper and rankin cod.

NSS12 CHIRP/downscan screenshots.

Gday all.

Whilst doing updates to my sounders, thought i would pull some screenshots to share with the world.

Please, feel free to share any advice, as im still getting used to running this new gear.

:)

Another sounder shot from today - harder ground?

Ocean reef 30 - 35 metres

Found some good ground and some decent bait balls but only caught a Sgt Baker, skippy, wrasse and a (released) cod of an unknown type.

shallow water sounder shots - mud (swan river)

simrad nss7 shots from last weekend when I was crabbing.  The shallower water is under the narrows in between the northern bank and the northern pylon.

The deeper shots are over near como buoy.  The only explanation I can give for the weaker echos in the top half of the water column is jellyfish.  anyone want to comment on that?  not sure if they show up on sounders?

Windan Bridge channel - shallow water shot

I took this shot the other night as we passed under Windan Bridge near Claisebrook the other night.  this is just on the southern side of the bridge, right in the middle of the channel.  our speed was six knots.  had i been idling or drifting, i suspect i may have got a better fish arch displayed, but we were over it so quickly....

Simrad sounder shots - whiting and a wreck

Took these sounder shots yesterday in between Stragglers and FFB. The first we were getting nice plump sand whiting. Some a really good size.

The second is the wreck in between Stragglers and FFB in 18 m of water. Lots of bait on it but didn't get any hits on the jig. there were about half a dozen pots on it!

Sea trials Simrad evo2 7" touchscreen

Well finally I took the boat out to test out my new Simrad sounder. I have fitted a B175H 1KW chirp through hull tranny to this unit. At first the unit was confused in shallow water and giving me shit readings but once out into about  3or 4 metres it sorted its self out. One thing I did notice was alot of clutter on the screen I played with the gain but then lost alot of resolution on the screen. I have just read to adjust the TVG but I was only in 35 meters of water. I dialed in different fequencies 175hz-210hz and also left in the chirp mode (recommended) by some but still had a clutter problem and a clear deffinition of the bottom problem. I also run a 585 along side it and at present the 585 certainly has  better clarity and picture on it. The GPS side of it (fitted with a platnum +) card in it is very good. The screen shot function is very good also plus the scroll back and mark (GPS) or take a screen shot in the scroll back function. Any advice out there regarding the clutter problem would be apprecited. Thanks

Water is getting warmer

First image is last weekend, fishing for whiting - Mindarie

Second image is yesterday, water is one degree warmer. the bait ball was busting on the surface. a couple of predators down low. same area.

NSE 12 who has one, and are they worth it?

Gday all.

With this new boat on the way, im looking at upgrading the electrics also. Ill be running my HDS10 for the navagation side of things, but looking at getting a NSE12 with 1kw transducer to chase the fishies. who has the simrad gear, anything to keep en eye on with networking them to some lowrance stuff?

Is it worth all the $$$? Some "every day" normal people shots (excluding marks if need be) would be great to see if ya have some

Sand whiting in 20 metres - Simrad

Someone asked recently about picking up sand whiting on your sounder?

Yesterday we were out off Mindarie, just north of the leads outside the reef and got a good feed of sand whiting. this is a screen shot I got as we were catching them. a couple were good size. Most were average, with a few small ones and some even smaller thrown back.

Whats your interpretation?

On the way back in from out deep, we stopped at a spot I had been given but never fished before. My deckie dropped some big baits and I dropped a jig down.

Nothing.

Looking at this, I suspect next time I stop here I should have a whiting rig ready to go? I am looking at the thin light green line right on the bottom reading and thinking whiting?

Simrad NSE8

System setup with a NSE8 Head unit, BSM1, LSS2 Structurescan and Module, P66 Transducer.

These shots are from the swan, mainly tailor trolled up on mulies with a running ball sinker.  I have some shots of pylons under Canning Bridge and river markers that are pretty cool that I will try to find.

NSS7 screen shots 55 - 75m

I have posted these on another thread, but thought I would put here to start things off.  These were last week off Ocean Reef. Its a standard 600w Lowrance transducer and about the only setting you cant see on the screen was the noise reduction which I varied according to if the motor was running, trying to keep it as low as possible. In some shots I am using the bottom lock function. Lost a big strike on the bottom bait ball. suspect it was a sambo.
