Information on Sounders/GPS

Any FURUNO owners NOR

 Hello all,

Can somebody potentially help me please.

I have an older style Furuno sounder which I think has a dodgy connector in the head of the power lead (10 pin).

Is there any Furuno owner whoi lives NOR (as close to Stirling) who I can bring my head unit around to plug into your boat to try to isolate the problem?

Thank you all in advance

Chris

Full sounder set-up finally ordered but what maps?

 Hi Fellow fishwreckers,

So i have just locked in my sounder set-up for the new tub consisting of:

Simrad NSS EVO3S 12"

S5100 sonar module

S3100 sonar module

TM265LH Transducer

Active Imaging HD 3 in 1 High/Wide Transducer

Which should give me everything i need for all my fishing/diving methods.

The only thing in the system yet to decide on is which map card to run?

You see all these claims to have this and that by these mapping companies but what i almost didnt realise is that some of these fandangle programs are only available in certain places around the world!

So what i am reaching out about is what card do all of you use that has the most features that work and have regular updates when used in WA?

Flush Mounting GPS/Sounder

Hi All,

I'm looking at replacing my 15 year old Flush mounted 7" Humminbird with a 9" unit as I reckon I'll have the dash space.  I've been looking at the current range of 9" units across most brands and the one thing I've noticed is it seems they are all delivered with gimbal/frame mounts but it doesn't look like flush mount kits are included in most cases.  I don't want to buy a new unit and then find out the flush mount kit has to be ordered elsewhere or from overseas incurring unexpected cost and waiting time. Or worse, the flush mount kits aren't available at all.

Just wondering if anyone has purchased any of the current 9" units on the market that have come with flush mount kits or the flush mount kits were easily purchased separately.  I'm not that fussed which brand and want to keep the cost under $2k.   Plus, any recommendations or warnings about any of the current Brands/9" units that can be flush mounted would be great.

Stores like BCF & Anaconda seem have the best pricing but I'm guessing after sales support would be rubbish.  So any other sales recommendations would be good as well.

Merry Xmas to All!

Cheers.

Simrad NSS help

Ive got a NSS16 Evo3 fitted in my boat, and can't for the life of me see how to turn off the auto tracking.

Manual says it is set from Factory and "The automatic tracking function can be turned off from the Tracks dialog", but I'm fkd if I can see where?

The settings system in these seems extraodinarily awkward to navigate compared to the Lowrance which it is supposedly related to.

I cant seem to find how to;

  • stop auto tracking
  • start and stop a track to save it say for a particular passage
  • Get waypoints to show up on the screen, have to go into the side menu, "find waypoint", go to, then as soon as i finish navigation its gone again

Help transferring gps marks from one unit to another

Hey Guys wondering if anyone can help / advise on how to move gps spots from one unit  to another , I have a furuno Gp-7000 which is starting to fall to pieces that has the last 8 years worth of my fishing spots on it which I want to move to a lowrance HDs 10 that a mate has kindly given to me , is it as simple as taking out the map card from the furuno and putting it in the lowrance ? Didn't want to have a crack at that without getting opinions off you fellas, cheers guys

Simrad problems? any info appreciated!

 Hi ladys and gents,

So im rusty as all buggery when it comes to the latest sounder tech so im hoping someone in this great community can shine a lil light on the reports i have been reading up on or if someone has any ideas for a setup based on experience in a similar vessel type.

Ive just ordered a new trailcraft profish 560 as this suits all my needs and budget with not a bad wait time for delivery but the new boat buyers dilemma of picking a sounder/Gps setup has sunk in to kick me around real quick. I want to keep things as basic as possible so was leaning towards a 12 inch combo and was thinking a Simrad NSS 12 evo 3 with the tm275LHW until i found the all the problems that people have experienced with these chirp units but all this info seems to be quite dated so my main question is, are people still having problems with these units or have they worked out the kinks and got them running the way they should for a 7k setup?

Or, can anyone recommend a very functional alternative for around the same budget? i will be pushing out into the deep stuff from time to time up and down the coast so i want to run a 1kw for sure but am at a newbie/child status these days when it comes to sounder tech so any pointers or info will be greatly appreciated!

Lowrance operation issues

Hi all I need some advice  I've recently purchased  lowrance HDS10 with the standard 3 in 1 transducer.

im having trouble with the sounder reading much at anything above slow trawling speed. I have tried adjusting the transducer to read slightly forward of horizontal but this has not helped.   this unit replaced my LCX37C and the transducer mounting position is the same as the old unit and the old unit read better at speed than the new unit so transducer placement may not be the issue. Anyone had similar issue or can suggest a solution, thanks

Best sounder for $1000 budget.

 G'day.
I'm just chasing opinions on what the best options are for a new sounder upto $1000 budget, bonus if it's a dual sounder/gps.

It will just be for a tinny, so mostly under 25m's of depth.

I done a search on here but I couldn't find any recent posts.

Cheers Paul

Best Mapping programme/ app for PC to enable editing of GPS marks with chart overlay.

Best Mapping programme/ app for PC or desktop to enable editing of GPS marks with chart overlay.

Hi guys tried search bar but a lot of info appears old or outdated,

Looking for ideas on a easy accessible chat map overlay for PC use to enter edit view and store waypoints without having to sit in the boat with a bourbon in hand (although not a bad option)

Garmin pre home port used to allow this and had a programme but now with homeport all i have is a bunch of waypoints and the map of WA minus any chart overlay. I use on the boat lowrance with Navico charts but would like the option to upload marks and view with a reasonable level of charting depths etc.

Does anyone have or recommend a downloadable programme (prefferably without annual subscriptions) that would enable this?

Cheers

Best Boat electronics - 12in units

 Hi FW crew

I am restoring my 23ft Caribbean, and part of the restoration is a new dash pod with a flush mounted single big screen sounder.

Prior to making the new dash I want to gather all the new electronics and make the best layout possible.

If anyone has experience with big screen sounders I would love any feedback.

Currently I have a 9in Garmin and am pretty happy with navigation and usability, but I'm happy to change brands.

The Volvo Penta vessel control is not compatible with a sounder, so no consideration there.

I live in Albany, so will be planning to use it for squidding the sound through to out deep.

Cheers

Navionics plus

My navionics map has stopped showing map gradient lines any thoughts on what has happened. Set up in Lowrence.

element hv 9 or echomap 95svuhd?

I have just bought my first boat and am looking at getting a new sounder for it.

I have a 5.2 fibreglass cuddy cab with a lowrance elite5x that came with it.

Most of my fishing will be inshore or river intially but hoping to go further out on good days.

I am currently looking at re-doing the wiring as the gang switch has missing terminals and half don't work( i am assuming this is due to it previously having a duel battery set up of which the second battery is missing, along with the earth cable).

I have spent alot of time looking at different sounders and trying to work out which would best suit what I want but need some advice on which of these 2 would be better in the long run.

Cheers for reading

Chirp vs Traditional (Garmin/Furuno)

Hi all,

ive recently relocated a M260 (traditional 50/200) transducer and installed it on the transom -connected to a Furuno FCV585).

I have now installed a M265LH (chirp) transducer in the location the M260 was installed (shoot through hull) -connected to a Garmin 8410XSV..

The M260 (Furuno) has continued to work great while travelling, very little noise and good bottom readings at 25+Knots.

The CHIRP transducer (garmin) works OK, but has much more noise while travelling compared to the transmon mount M260 and compared to the M260 that was installed in the exact same location (shooting through the hull).

I have tried/played with all the filters.

Is this typical of all CHIRP transducers (lots of noise)?

While i can make this work, the plan was to get rid of the Furuno eventually and rely on the Garmin. I mightve been better off sticking with Furuno.

Thanks

Mixed Networking - NMEA 2000 / 0183 Furuno and Navionics

OK, so I have a minor problem to solve (and beer doesnt help it). Wondering if any of you have solved a similar one..

I have a very old Lowrance LCX-15MT under the dash with a GPS puck - it's sole job is to feed my Furuno 587 a GPS coordinate in order to mark spots, and I'm trying to do away with it (the LCX).. Reason being, I have my outboard being fed a GPS signal by a separate NMEA2000 networked GPS Puck, and I want to share that - and use my navionics app on my 10" tablet better.

So, I have both NMEA 2000 and 0183 devices, and I want to combine them on the one network - which I can do with a gateway www.yachtd.com/products/nmea0183_gateway.html

I also want to add a NMEA 0183 wi-fi bridge to feed the tablet (and anything else), which I can also do www.yakbitz.com/Yakker.aspx

Theory:

GPS puck feeds the network

Engines feed the network with all related data

The Furuno would be fed GPS by the gateway

The wifi bridge would also be fed by the gateway (you can have mutiple listening devices on one NMEA 0183 output).

This will allow the same data to be transmitted accross my devices - and hopefully allow better navigation data in Navionics.. It will also allow me to create sonar charts live on my tablet..

But.

I am trying to get away with only one NMEA gateway (the gizzmo that turns NMEA2000 into NMEA 0183 and vice versa, acting as a conduit).

Without getting a second NMEA gateway - can I get the Furuno to talk depth to the Wifi Bridge and would the above theory work?

I'm hoping the single gateway can transmit GPS to the Furuno - receive depth and GPS from the Furuno, then transmit all three to the wifi bridge for the Navionics app (along with whatever other data is on the network).

I could just have the wifi bridge coming straight off the furuno Rx wire, but I don't know what sentances the Furuno transmits - and it what format, and I don't want to limit just that Furuno data being sent to the tablet, as the Navionics app has AIS functionality, among others..

Footnote: the Yak unit is a (much) cheaper version of the Digitl Yacht Sonar Server. Here is a vid of sonarcharts live in action over wi-fi to the Navionics app.

digitalyacht.net/2015/08/08/sonar-server-live-demo/

Cheers.

Navionics platinum plus

 G'day guys,

How much perth inshore stuff is relief shaded ?

Was going to get c maps but nothing is done for tinshore grounds.

Only have a tinnie so hoping to get some better mapping for inshore work

Sounder issues of course

 Gday all.

Lowrance hook2 5, lowered right down ( starboard ) after tial and error. crystal clear out of harbour doing 20+ knots and up to 30m

Loses bottom when heading deeper 40m+ and when rough, ( south coast and 5m ali quintrex ) so mostly always, and have to slow down to 4-5 knots to find again. Very frustrating not having picture between my marks.

I am fishing more 50-70m these days, am i expecting too much from this high chirp unit?

Anyone played with noise filters and bottom lock with this model in these depths

Running an elite hdi5 as chart only next to other unit.

Q's;

*hook2 high chirp vs using the elite hdi with a p66 50/200 in these depths

*buying a new unit (reveal ) or similar that comes with a 50/200, newer technology

Happy to move away from lowrance (any recommendations/2nd hand units ) to see the bottom at speed on this hull

Your thoughts??

What sounder?

Hi guys, in the market for a new sounder/combo.

What are the current good ones to look at? Budget $2k to $3k.

ie Garmin 105sv looks nice.

Lowrance FS9 is cheaper.....

I get confused between combo, extra black boxes to add, transducers etc etc

Will also keep my furuno 587 with 1kW installed.

But maybe a chirp combo would be good?

Fish chasing dhus, reds up north, so mostly to 100m.

Thoughts comments greatly appreciated.

Koden vs Sweia sounders?

Any feedback in relation to the above sounders, about their performance ,best depth and any other useful info. as I am looking into them both.

cheers

Transom mount transducer converted to in hull (wet box) transducer

Hi all, I have a TM185M 1KW transducer (transom mount) and at speeds over 10knts it's not worth looking at the screen other than for depth and at more than 20kt's it loses bottom altogether. I have moved it all over the place, had rooster tails, changed angles, skimmed it etc and haven't seen much more improvement.

At slow speeds it's awesome, great definition of the bottom and for marking fish.

So I have decided to try and mount it inside the hull and shoot it through the fibreglass. The boat is a 2003 cruise craft 625 outsider and talking with cruise craft the bilge area is all solid fibreglass so it should/might work.

So any advice ? Has anyone done this with a 1kw transom mount ?

When I purchased the transducer it came with a warning about mounting it internally due to heat, but other than the little warning sticker I haven't been able to find much on the web. My plan is to make a wetbox setup, and I assume that this would be sufficient to manage the heat issue ?

Am I wasting my time, should I just sell the TM185M and buy a through hull transducer and drill a bloody big hole in the boat ?

Rotto Swim Transducer Setup

Noticed a boat on the Rotto swim yesterday (boat name Bubbles) that had this transducer set up, transducer looked 1/2 meter long and great solid adjusting system. Could not see any transducer on line that it may have been, any comments?

Transducer - fairing mount - 2 thumbs up

 Hi everyone

This wont be new info for those who have one already. But, for anyone who is having troubles getting good performance from their sounder when travelling at speed, get a fairing mount.

JohnF and others over the years have advocated them, and have even said that its worth modifying your trailer set up to facilitate the fairing. This was always my intention but loved my multi rollers so much. Well, mid last year I swapped out the multi rollers for bunks. Sure, the boat doesnt roll off quite as easily, but BLOODY HELL, the improvement in transducer performace has gone through the roof at speeds in rough water up to about 28 knots.

I was running a through hull B60 and moved to a B45 (similar to B744). Whereas the B60 would start getting a bit iffy around 20 knots in the rough water, the B45 just keeps going up to about 28 knots in the rough. Havent had a chance to check above that.

Navionics

Just a note to the person if on the site that uses a navionics card and marks their spots "Peters spots" they are all on the web app Navionics.

So if you use a Navionics Card watch out your not uploading your spots to the web.

WA based custom high speed fairing blocks

 Hi all.

Are there any WA based outfits that have experience with high speed fairing block design?  Basically a WA equivalent of QME.

I'm looking to get a custom one fabricated and welded into the hull of my boat, and as one can appreciate i would want to get something fitted that i know will work effectively first time as there is essentially no going back.

Cheers.

Tom.

Stand alone gps

Looking for a stand alone navigation as the old Navman has seen its last days  I was contemplating getting a big screen iPad and navionics app as I want the detail of the maps i run a furuno sounder so no need for a combo

any advice

Setup Advice For Cat - In Hull Transducer

Hi guys, probably opening a can of worms here, but chasing some advice on a new setup for my Powercat 2500. Current system is the old factory fit Raymarine C80 unit, not bad in its day, but needs replacing. Currently runs a transom mount transducer, and loses signal at anything over 12 knots. The hull has a pretty sharp V, and after having a good look I've decided that there simply isn't anywhere suitable to mount a transom mounted transducer to get a good feed.

I'm open to the idea of multiple screens (seems a much cheaper way of doing it rather than getting one super large screen) and possibly flush mount a dedicated plotter at the helm and a sounder pedesdal mount on the dash that can be seen from the deck. Most of my fishing is under 50m depth, but wouldn't rule out going deeper. Mainly behing Garden Island, Rotto etc, but future plans include some trips further north. I was offered a Simrad NSS 9" unit with dedicated S2009 Sounder & M260 that seemed like a good solution, but the price tag of over $8k seemed a bit expensive - am I being tight, or are there better/cheaper options I should consider?

Have been told conflicting advice - some say a 600W transducer will be fine, others say now way would they do it without a 1kW.

In hull transducers seem a bit limited - will I have to give up things like side scan/chirp? (do I really need these - side scan I would like for finding new ground)

Not set on any particular brands, but also don't want to spend a fortune.

Any advice on what others are running and approximate costs welcome, thanks in advance.

Cheers,

BD.

Garmin chart plotter

 Hi guys

looking at upgrading my hds5 gps unit to possibly a Garmin 952 xs. Anyone have any info on these units? I have a dedicated fish finder Furuno 627 and want a good quality map display unit up to about $2000.

Humminbird Sounder Dealers

 Good Friday morning

Hope everyone is safe and well.

I live in mandurah now and was wondering if anyone knows the best and reputable Humminbird dealer. I have contacted Whitey's in Bunbury but dont know anything about the 4 listed in Perth. Foothills and dinghy world, and a large one with 2 branches that I get mixed feedback about. Starts with W.

Just hoping someone can point me to the most respected.

Cheers
