Recording function on sounder
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2014-09-05 21:02I am learning how to use a Simrad sounder / plotter.
It has a recording function but the file comes out as a .slg file. Which I have established is a sonar log file. I have found that this won't play in media player or any other software readily available, but is recognised by the Navionics web app, although it wants me to upload it.... yeah right!
Simrad haven't responded to my questions yet. Does anyone know how you can play this back or record it in a different format?
Also, is it best to shut down the unit before taking the navionics card out and putting a different card in to save screen shots? Or can I change cards with the unit turned on?

what transducer do I have?
Submitted by Ben85 on Sat, 2014-08-30 11:05Gents,
I've just upsized from my 6m haines to a 680 haines which has a through hull tranducer. While I'm told it's a 1kw transducer I just wanted to veryfy and was wondering if anyone here may have the same one. Its an airmar and the code on the tranducer cable states: C344 C 1225 ROHS
Did an internet search on the phone but couldn't find any solid info. Its matched to a raymarine C120 sounder/plotter.
Also if anyone has the same unit I have a few questions if you dont mind.
Cheers/Ben

Lowrance comparisons
Submitted by Bunny on Tue, 2014-08-19 15:20My brother is looking to upgrade and at the moment we are leaning towards Lowrance.
The new Lowrance Elite 7 with CHIRP appears to be only downscan. Is this correct and if so that would mean depth range would be more limited than the Elite 7HDI yes? The HDI also has 'normal' scan as well as down scan but no CHIRP.
We may use this to 70 metres so would like to confirm the above.
Also, can anyone shed light on the difference between these units and the HDS? From what I understand the processor is faster with more fucntions from a GPS point of view but from a sounder aspect it appears they are equal. Getting the structure scan with the HDS adds side scan but apart from that the extra dollars appears to be speed and mapping improvements?
If we went HDS what benefits woudl the CHIRP add on give us? Sounds like it would only improve the downscan paramater?
So if anyone can give some specifics here it would be great as the mapping is not the critical issue here. He wants a good quality unit for sounding so would pay for the HDS if it was in fact better.
Thanks.

Lowrance HDS 5
Submitted by Ric on Mon, 2014-08-18 17:06Hi there all,
sorry for the long winded post...
I have been a member for a while, however I haven't been on for quite some time, due to unforseen circumstances...
However im after some advise if I can ???
I recently brought a Ali 5.5 m boat, so im just learning. I brought how to use a fish finder book, which I found fantastic for a beginner, however the boat I brought has a Lowrance HDS 5 sounder and im having a little trouble with the strong echo's, and the bottom discrimination. I tried all the colour pallets, to get it to a red echo, as most of the sounders are but every time I stop any were I get a thick strong red bottom, so im confused on how to read a strong echo, I went back to the original settings and the strong echo seems to be yellow ?
on the way in I stopped on a small patch of reef in Cockburn sound (Jervois bank)just off the ASI groyne, and had a play around, I still couldn't discriminate a strong echo, I had thick yellow on and off the reef...
Any advise, on colour/pallet settings ?????

Running Two Fish Finders
Submitted by Hutch on Wed, 2014-08-13 12:57Hi guys,
I currently have a fishfinder on board and am looking at a chartplotter and decided to go for a combo unit.
My main questions are:
-Is it possible to run two sounders off one transducer (probably dumb question)?
-If not, will the 'beams' from the transducers affect each other? (probably another dumb question)
I may just end up using the combo unit and keeping the old fishfinder as a backup should the combo pack up.

transom mounting a transducer
Submitted by randall df223 on Mon, 2014-08-04 19:36I am about to mount a new lowrance 50/200 transducer. I am running a 75 hp honda 4 stroke with a right handed prop. The transom has two mounting plates already welded onto it, one port side, one starboard side. I intend to mount the transducer onto one of these so I don't have to drill holes into the hull. They are spaced 400 mm either side of the keel and have uninterrupted water flow in front of them. Now, I suppose my question relates to wiring. The easiest wiring route is with all the outboard electrics and cabling and a deckwash intake through the transom on the starboard side. But the installation instructions say if possible avoid other electrical wiring if possible. The port side of my transom is walk through and whilst possible to run the cable there it will be very difficult, and probably exposed to more wear and tear and possible damage.
Anyone have any comment about the importance of running the transducer cable away from other electronics???

transferring coords from old gps to new gps
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2014-07-26 16:33I am upgrading my small cheap gamin eTrex gps to most likely a simrad combo. Does anyone know if it's possible to import all my existing coordinates into these fang dangled gps units. if so is there a standard file format? Like .csv or .txt???
I am going have to get them out of the old unit manually so I thought I should put them straight into a spreadsheet as I do it. That way I am hoping I can import them straight in.
Any advice?

New Sounder and Chartplotter setup
Submitted by Simmo Ryan on Fri, 2014-07-18 20:59Evening all,
After going through countless previous posts on this website in regards to chart plotter and sounder recommendations, unfortunately I still find myself no closer to making a final decision on my setup.
Just when I think I have finally made my mind up, I find myself back at square one. As I'm sure you can all imagine, when your about to hand over five grand for your electronics setup, you want to make sure your getting the best equipment for the job..... Its a big decision.
I have ordered a new Bar Crusher 615c from All Boats, which should be due for delivery sometime around September. I have tentatively ordered a Furuno 587 sounder coupled with a 1KW Transducer, and a Furuno 1870F which will be used as my chart plotter.
I have to say, after watching You Tube video's (one from Mr Thipthorp in particular) I think the 587/1KW system is probably the best fish finder out there. Topics on this forum back that up too....
The 1870F is where I have a problem. Whilst reading about the chart plotter side of things, Navionics appears to be the mapping software that everyone uses and recommends, although the Furuno is only compatible with C-map, which hardly comes with rave reviews.
I would ideally like a chart plotter and sounder that "talk" to one another, so when good ground is located, when you hit mark on the sounder, it transfers over to the chart plotter automatically. My under standing is that whilst the Furuno 587 is an awesome sounder, compatibility with other brands isn't it's strong point.
So after boring everyone with all that, I suppose my questions are -
1/ Is C-Map that bad that I shouldn't buy the Furuno 1870 and buy a chart plotter that runs Navionics?
2/ Would a system made up of two Lowrance HDS9 Touch (one as plotter, one as sounder) with a 1KW Transducer perform as well as a 587/1kw system?
I would really love some input from the fishwrecked community on this one, I know that there would be countless members that have faced this own situation themselves.
I'm not really set on brands, whilst I like the Furuno, I'm open to Garmin, SIMRAD and Lowrance, but I have to keep that 5 grand budget in mind. If someone has a system setup suggestion setup, please let me know.
Look forward to reading thru the responses.
Cheers in advance, Simmo

Looking at the following Fishfinders/Chartplotters
Submitted by daved1984 on Mon, 2014-07-07 14:05Hi all I am currently looking at the following fishfinders / charplotters, Has anyone had any experience with these. I want something where I will mainly be fishing a few KM's from shore but when I build up enough experience I will be going out deep. but am currently weighing up these any advice will be much appreciated. I really want to go with two dual devices so that if one goes then at least I have a choice of fishfinder / chartplotter.
1.) Lowrance Elite 7 Chirp Combo with Navionics Gold Chart - 50/200KHZ
2.) Raymarine Dragonfly 7 inch
It is a swing between the both but I am unsure what is everyone's thoughts has anyone used the following?
Any advice will be amazing this setting up the boat is a mind-field :)

Currenlty have a Lowance Elite 5 combo unit, i have a new Furuno 587 on its way so only planned to use the lowrance as the GPS and back up sounder.
Will the lowrance transducer wazes cause issues for the Furuno, ? If so im gussing you just disconnect the main plug at the unit as the power and earth wires are seperate and are all thats required to power the unit for GPS signal ?

Furuno B60 Through Hull Transducer
Submitted by mickconn on Mon, 2014-06-23 15:10Howdy
Just chasing some thoughts on a Furuno B60 through hull transducer from any one who has one. I am using a 587 and the p66 transom mount is a bit fickle at speed and I am now sick of playing with it. I have a fibreglass boat so the hole shouldnt be the issue but will this plan cause me more grief than its worth?? Generally I fish in less than 50m so the specs seem ok, but I do drive it like I sole it and I want something that performs a little better at speed even if its just to tell me the depth. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The other question, what sealant would you use for the installation?
Thanks
Mick

Waterproof video camera
Submitted by Hutch on Sun, 2014-06-08 21:03Hey guys,
Looking at getting a video camera to record my fishing adventures and had a quick look around and theres so many to choose from. Had a search and there is a bit of info there but nothing too recent and with new stuff comin out all the time I'm looking for up to date info. Would preferrably like it to be waterproof. Heard millions of great reviews of GoPro's, but wondering if there are any other good quality cameras out there for similar or less price.
Cheers
