Gps's
Submitted by getting bites on Sun, 2014-06-08 16:38Hi peeps,
first attempt at a post, please be kind!
ive got a little runabout, around 4.6m has a bit of fruit but I'm wanting to stick a GPS on her. There's so many to choose from I'm a little confused with what to get. I'm wanting something not too flash, given I"ll be upgrading the boat soon. Do they all need map cards purchased separately and constantly updated. Cheers for any info..

585 with 2kw 50khz transducer
Submitted by craytail99 on Sat, 2014-05-31 10:06Hello,
I have a FCV 585 matched with a TM 260 transom mounted traducer on a 20ft Aluminum Cat
I would like more fish discrimination detail in 400 - 700 meters as I deep drop for bottom fish.
Is it possible to match the 585 with a 2kw transducer I am planning on mounting the transducer on a pole (at the transom) to adjust the height and dropping it down a fair way under the hull to avoid any turbulence and associated issues.
I will only be traveling at 5 -10 knots while its down.
Main reason I am thinking the 2kw 50khz rather than a dual 2kw 50/200 khz is the size and weight differance 5kg as opposed to 15kg.
I know I am on the edge of trying to polish a turd in getting a 585 1kw transducer to give me a poor mans version of a 295 but I havent got the space for anything larger than a 585/87.
Any pointers as to the best transducer and if I need an MB 1100 would be most appreciated.
Cheers
Craytail

Which transducer for Furuno 295
Submitted by Maccas on Mon, 2014-05-19 14:13I am looking at a Furuno 295 in my Kevlacat 5.2 which basically 18 ft which is more sensitive to weight down back than the bigger cats. I only want to fit a transducer that is a shoot thru transducer that is mounted in the hull as a wet box. I am considering an Airmar R199 mounted in a wet box as it is smaller and lighter than the R299 transducer. This is a dual frequency transducer50hz/200hz like the R299 but only 2kw and not tunable and a bit cheaper.
I spoke to Taylor marine about this but they said that the Airmar transducer did not work as well as a furuno 2kw. They suggested the 2kw 200hz 8b-8b which is suitable for wet box mounting but the only 50hz transducer that they say is suitable for wet box mounting is the 50b-9b which is only 1kw. If I went with Furuno transducers then I would like to fit the 2kw 200hz 8B-8B for shallow and either the 2KW 50BL-12HR or 2KW 38BL-9HR for deep work but both of these deep transducers are not recommended for thru hull wet box mounting.
Is any one running any of these transducers as thru hull wet box mounted and what sort of results are you getting?

Sounder Shot
Submitted by jayce on Fri, 2014-05-09 13:18Hey all
Last weekend i had the boat down in Albany to do a bit of fishing and squiding. The weather was a bit overage so we stayed inside the sound for the couple of days.
We kept coming accross what i would call a bait balls on the sounder even found one that was hanging just off a lump for the 2 days we where fishing.
We tried dropping jigs, plastics and bait down around them but couldnt seem to get any sort of interest.
Am i reading the sounder correctly presuming these are bait balls and we where just unlucky that nothing was following any o them?

Lowrance HDS10(gen2)+structrescan feedback**lashed out and got one**
Submitted by t bone on Mon, 2014-04-21 22:15Gday all.
I work with a redneck (american) buddy that uses humminbird gear with the side and down imaging jazz to chase his bass. He has been talking it up so much, i cant stop thinking about it. I currently have an older lowrance combo and need to upgrade anyhow, but like the way lowrance operate.
Has anyone out there got any "real life" play time with the Lowrance HDS (gen 2) structrescan?
Is it really as good as they say, how does it handle the deep water?
Everything they show seems to be in freshwater :-/ How does it go off the west coast?

Lowrance Elite-7 HDI or Dragonfly 7
Submitted by D_d_001 on Mon, 2014-04-21 16:09looking to replace the dead combo unit I have with either (or something similar) of the above.
have read Vinesh87's dragonfly (great info there Venesh87 and almost sold me there and then....looking at the 7 though....)review but was looking for someone who may be familiar with the Lowrance Elite 7 aswell
dragonfly for $1000 inc tranny and card
Lowrance for $800 inc tranny and card
mainly used for up to 60ish meters in metro waters but very often travel north and to 100-120m
Was hoping for some feedback.
especially re the depth capabilities and downscan imaging. are they similar?
cheers

Raymarine E 127 MFD with Chirp
Submitted by oldy on Fri, 2014-04-18 09:17Have purchased a Raymarine E127 MFD with chirp. Still trying to understand the sounder.
Does anyone have similar set up that could give me advice on settings for gain etc. generally fishing around 50 - 60 metres. Run split screen with bottom lock currently at around 6 metres. Seem to get gaps in bottom lock with the bottom lock range 6metre.
have run in auto gain and tvg but expect I can get better with manual adjustments.
thanks

Furuno 620 deepish water setting
Submitted by ctan1968 on Sat, 2014-04-12 11:50Hi all,
will be using the sounder next month up north in about 115m and was just comparing settings for the best picture.
I will always use bottom lock on the left screen and sounder will be in 200KHz.
At that depth, I look for fish schools as the bottom is quite featureless.
Range will be probably 20m and I will use the "shift" function to get bottom onto the screen.
In the past I have had the gain up towards 8.5/10.
Any suggested feedback would be great.
Thank you
Chris

Fcv587 deep water setting
Submitted by jng on Tue, 2014-04-01 21:09Hi guys,
can anyone tell me what deep water settings they are using on thier furuno 587 and tm260
went out last Friday and tried the 587 in 200+ of water, it picked up the bottom fine but the screen was full of clutter even with 0 gain, tvg was set to high and running it on 50khz, tried changing the clutter and other setting it didn't clear it at all
tranny is a tm260
The unit works exceptionally well on 200khz up to 150m, once it's changed to high tvg it just clutters up.
Thanks in advance!
Justin

Furuno NMEA 0183
Submitted by big john on Sat, 2014-03-29 22:25Well after just over six years I've finally decided to connect up my furuno 585 and gp32.
I know plenty of people have done it so can anyone advise me which colour wires from the 585 need to be connected to which gp 32 colour wires?
Lowrance link-8 to Garmin gps
Submitted by morgs on Wed, 2014-03-26 10:55Just wondering if anyone has connected a Garmin to a lowrance VHF? I have a Garmin 451s with NMEA0183 connection and the cable with the radio but both manuals arent very clear on Rx/Tx, out/in, -/+. Been searching for a cuppla days now and come to the unsupported conclusion that:
Tx(out) on GPS is nmea0183 in(-) VHF
Rx(in) on GPS is nmea0183 out(+) VHF

Sounder advice needed
Submitted by Maccas on Thu, 2014-03-20 13:00I want to upgrade my sounder which is a Furuno 582l which has a p66 transducer. I want to get a bigger screen and go to a 1kw transducer as the 582 starts to lose bottom at 500/600 ft. As my boat is a Kevlacat a transom mount transducer would be difficult so I think a wet box shoot through would be best. I also have a Navnet 3D MF8D that I just brought from a friend to use as a plotter. I was thinking a Furuno 587 with a M260 would be suitable but I don't think that it will link to the Navnet plotter so that I can mark a point on the 587 and show on the plotter.
I would like to be able to pause the display and scroll back to mark structure or fish as I am on my way to my fishing ground so that I can try the waypoint later. Even if I can't scroll back being able to mark a point on the sounder would be good. Can I do this with the 587/ Navnet combination. Would a 295 be a better option with the Navnet or is there something else with decent screen that would work.
Perhaps using another combo such as a Garmin 1040xs with chirp would be better as the sounder as it would do what want and give better sounder performance than the 587 or 295 and I would just have to transfer the points manually. I want to be able to see fish and the bottom at 1500 ft.
Any advice or help appreciated.

Transducer rooster tail
Submitted by big john on Fri, 2014-03-14 21:11About to fit a 1kw furuno transducer with the airmar stainless transom bracket, looks huge compared to my 600w job.
Has anyone had any rooster tail issues with these larger transom mounted transducers?

Furuno TVG settings
Submitted by Gunner966 on Fri, 2014-03-14 07:49Hi all,
I run my TVG high on as suggested by Greg Lampret from Wicked Fishing. I notice that some people here suggest that to run it on Medium. I tried that on that over the last few Days at Cervatnes and I didn't notice a lot of difference apart having the shift my gain from 2.4 in 60 - 70mtrs to 4+. What are the benefits in running your TVG on Meidum or even low?
Cheers Gunner

Lowrance HDS 8 chart issues.
Submitted by HOOPS on Sun, 2014-03-09 22:22Hi all,
Hoping I might be able to get pointed in the right direction. I currently have a Lowrance HDS-8 with a Navionics Platnium card installed.
When I using the chart on this I used to have the depth contour lines displayed and also the depth chart numbers were displayed on contour lines on chart. For some reason I now only have the contour lines but no water depth markings, does anyone know how to change this settings to bring the depth marks back onto the chart?
Any help be appreciated Cheers!!

Lowrance LGC4000
Submitted by ctan1968 on Sun, 2014-03-09 11:28Hi all,
I currently run a Lowrance LCX??? GPS (2006 model) which uses a LGC2000 external puck antennae. There is a LGC4000 for sale and was wondering if I install this, will it make my GPS function better. The 4000 has got good specs like 5Hz but will all this be useless if my head unit was sold with the old 2000 model? IE. the specs of my old head unit will only be compatable to the 2000?
Thank you

Jrc jls 500 sounder v furuno
Submitted by roddo on Tue, 2014-03-04 21:01Hi all
i have recently bought a new boat and it has a jrc jls-500 combo unit, I'm use to using a furuno620 and not sure if I like the jrc as a sounder but this could be that I'm still learning how to read it. Contemplating on getting a 587 as a sounder but want your opinion about the jrc before I splash out and get the furuno. Normally fish 30-80m but am looking at doing some deep drop stuff but not all that often.
Anyone want to show me how to use the jrc properly happy to take you out for a fish all expenses paid. It's a 7.5m jackman ally with twin 225 yamahas.
Cheers
Rod
