NSE 12 who has one, and are they worth it?

Gday all.

With this new boat on the way, im looking at upgrading the electrics also. Ill be running my HDS10 for the navagation side of things, but looking at getting a NSE12 with 1kw transducer to chase the fishies. who has the simrad gear, anything to keep en eye on with networking them to some lowrance stuff?

Is it worth all the $$$? Some "every day" normal people shots (excluding marks if need be) would be great to see if ya have some

I have not long ago bought an nss7.  Very happy.  The 12 would be great but not enough room in my little tub and too many $$$ for my budget.  Check out the sounder shots in the simrad forum.

If you are NoR, I am in Aveley you can come and have a look if you want.

NSE vs NSS

Mon, 2014-10-27 17:52

Hi T-Bone,

NSE (expert) vs NSS (sport), NSE is button driven, but with alpha numeric keypad, zoom in/out, roto control knob etc and has more features like the ability to control autopilot.  NSS is touch and roto knob driven which changes how you drive the unit.  I reckon Touch screen is good, but its a personal choice.  NSE, NSS and Lowrance HDS Gen 2 are all approaching 3-4 years old.  Simrad just rolled out the NSS Evo two which is touch screen and has the 'add on' features of previous units like structurescan, BSM and chirp all built in without the need for below dash 'modules/black boxes' like my setup. The NSS originals were discounted from last year because the new unit was coming out from mar-sept, but evo2 is nice but expensive.

In all honesty it appears there arent that many simrad users out there so feedback is harder to find.  There appear to be many stories of people spending heaps of $$$ on early generation simrad gear for deep drop and being fairly unhappy with the results, people who are stoked with performance are pretty hard to find.  I kind of feel they are great units for sub 100mt, easy to use plotters and sounders, but if you are serious about putting a 1kw on and fishing deeper stuff I would skip the hassle and go straight to furuno using your lowrance as a plotter and link them up.  You can do this and spot mark on both units and edit the digits on one unit to match the other.  Not quite as good as trackback through lowrance/simrad stuff but it can be done.

It seems that there are many more furuno users who can give advice having used the units than simrad and with happier stories.  Just my two cents from reading and following the tech for a few years.  I dont own deep drop gear or a boat even close to being capable of heading out that far.

PS, I have a NSE8 with structure scan box and LSS2 tdx transom mounted, BSM1 box with a P66 50/200 TDX Transom mounted and a GS25 GPS Receiver.

interesting insight

Thanks for the thoughts mate. I agree with it being hard to find many ppl that use the simrad. We use a lot of FURUNO stuffa t work, but its all for maps and navagation use only. Never really looked into their sounders, but leave for work tomorrow to start thursday, so it might be a good way to waste some time during travels.

I have got both a NSE12 and as a slave unit a NSS8. been going for more than a year and very happy with them!

A decent size boat without decent auto pilot is just not complete.
