Fishwrecked Spearfishing

139.25kg yellowfin tuna caught freediving!

Here's an article I cut out of the West Australian back in June 12, 1998.

I kept it simply because my reaction at the time waz along the lines of ".......faaarrrrkkkkkkk!!!!!"

In re-reading it over the ensuing years, my reaction hasn't changed one little bit at all.

A 139.25kg (307lb) tuna caught by a Perth bloke while freediving!

As anyone who has caught a tuna on rod n real knows, they simply go off. To have the fortitude to conquer a beast this size, and in this manner still belies belief in my book!

I reckon Greg is up there with the elite of any sportsman - extreme sports or other.

Have a read and let me know your reaction!

Cheers.

Montebello Islands

Just looking at doing a trip in august departing 40 mile beach south of Karratha we have a couple of boats keen at the moment, an are information gathering at the moment.

Can anyone suggest a good Island to camp on?

Something like this should take care of the fuel for the trip.

http://www.liquidcontainment.com.au/eco ... 0%20Pillow

http://www.turtlepac.com/products/super-deck-tanks.html

I am on a roster, so we just got to do the planning and fitting it in with the tides rosters and weather.

Taylor Marine they had big commercial eskys 300 or 400 liter for $250 I might go for something like that,

Can anyone that has done the trip offer any advice that can help us.

cheers.

new reel broken

my new reel was really tight but now works fine just makes a weird noise is it because i got the river water on it or is it faulty and needs returned if its cause of the water is there a way to fix it.

Looking 4 sum dive mates:)

spearguns

Hi all,

I know there has been many posts about spearguns but I'm relativley new to the sport and i just have a couple of questions.

Firstly what is a good length to spear with from 5 to 10 metres free diving (obviously).

secondly what is the best gun to be using for that depth of diving for around $400.

Most of the diving will be done on the south coast if that makes any difference.

thanks in advance

carps

Shark shield

Gday.... I have done a search and read quite a bit about Shark Shields and I am still in 2 minds wether or not to buy one as there is mixed oppinions.... I am swaying towards getting one mainly as Ryan T and Canarvonite recomended them from previous posts.... I will be spearfishing and searching for crays mainly around GI, the 5 and Rotto.... Being a pom and not growing up next to the water, I just cant get over the uneasy feeling that there might be a big toothy shark waiting to come and gobble me up, especialy with the increased amount of sightings and attacks around the metro waters... I only just started diving but I really love it and if a shield can make it easier to feel comfortable in the water then so be it... So if anybody would like to help convince me that it wouldn't be a waste of money feel free to comment...I have found a new freedom 7 for $565, does that sound like a good price????

Spear fishing with a hand spear.

Hey guys, is a 14 year old allowed to go down to the beach with his friends with a hand spear to go fishing as i have now got into free diving and i want to buy a hand spear, so am i allowed to use one at the beach, or even allowed to take one, cheers.

Archdecon Ledge

Hey Guys,

Heading up to Gregory and planning of diving the ledge next week. Just wondering if anyone has speared or fished the ledge to much success?

By the looks of the chart and the drop offs i'm sure we'll run into something.

Any info would be great as i haven't fished around this area at all.

Cheers,

Sam

Don't shoot if you don't know the size/bag limit

Doesn't look comfy really does it =(

If someone checked, they would know that people are in fact a protected species at any size!

Mack attack

Got some good macks off SEQ on the weekend. Plenty around and got my fair share in quick time. No samller ones which is different as so far this year all we've seen are macks less than 10kg.

Also got buzzed by some HUGE fridge sized GT's on 3 differnet occasions as well as a decent sharks. Gt's were an amazing sight. Wish I had had my camera  on me, they were just milling around me, I couldve poked them with my spear.

Want to try spearing but....

Hi Guys and Gals

I have always wanted to try spearfishing, and have been reading the forums, and will be giving Graham a call in the new year, just a problem that always is in the back of my mind is the fish with big teeth!!!

I have done quite a bit of snorkeling, but every time I put my head under water I hear a cello with the Jaws theme music. My question is do you ever get over it, or do most of you use shark-deterring equipment?

Thanks

Mick

Albany Options - mainly Landbased

Heading down to Albany over xmas for a few days,

may have access to a 475 quinny runabout, launching from emu point. Can anyone recomend some spots? I was thinking trying skippy rock and the weed beds out the front of middleton beach for squid / KG's.

if the boat doesn't eventuate are there any landbased spots to try? I'm not after anything huge, just want to get a few whiting, squid, skippy, flathead type stuff. Was thinking areas down near the whaling station / frenchman bay?

Cheers for any help

QLD Brag

Still smiling after shooting my PB snapper. All fish shot in the last 4 days, spearing the Tweed, Moreton Island and the Sunshine Coast.

Spearfishing Regs

Hi All I'm starting to get into diving more and looking to do some spearfishing as something different but for the life of me I cant find the official regulations on catch limits..

I've searched the Fisheries WA website for evenings on end and I've come up empty handed. The most I can make of it is the same rules apply for spearos as fisho's but I have heard all sorts of rumours and stories from different people saying that spearfishing on compressed air will be banned !! and all other manner of new rules coming out ...

Does anyone know the official regs and can point me to them in writing ???

Cheers fishfish....

Cheap as chips.....

Am working in Africa atm and travelling through Jo'burg, and have a spearfishing contact in Capetown so thought I would find out how much RA's are worth over here. Can get RA 120 Sparid for ZAR1200 = AU$175 - CHEAP AS!!!!!!!!!!!

Have already got an order for a few guns up to about $900 so as to avoid paying import tax, but will be making a few trips so may add a few more guns to my collection!!!

Will post again closer to when I'll be flying back to Perth in Feb if I have any room left in my second order......

Tim.

Ideas Wanted for a Trip North

Hey guys,

Me and a mate are going to head north for a week trip during early november. (8/11 - 13/11)

I'm chasing some advice / ideas on where to go? At this stage we are thinking  one of the stations - Quobba, Warroora, Gnaraloo. Undecided on whether we will take the boat or not. Shark bay / steep pt is also on the cards. The aim is to get stuck into the reef species and have a bit of a crack at pelagics. I'm esspecially keen to test my new RA 120. We will be freediving.

Seeking advice in general but also;

weather we can expect

do's and dont's

accomodation options

4x4 access

ok to spearfish (marine park regulations etc)

any other ideas / advice welcome!

Cheers in advance

Pete

SC Kingies

Day of the Kingies. Thick as thieves, had a Wahoo come in for a look and then take off while I was dealing with a dirty kingie. Heartbreaking...

Abrolhos Dive Charter 1st-3rd October

Spearfishing club WA Undersea Club has a few spots left on its Abrolhos charter 1st -3rd October aboard the Island Leader.  We will leave Friday night and dive Sat and Sun. This is a nice weekend dive without having to take time off work. We plan to dive the Middle(Easter) group. The Abrolhos is truly one of WAs premier dive locations and the Island Leader is a 90 ft vessel with bunks, hot showers and cooking facilities.

Cost is $320 for members and $350 for non members. Price includes all food and ice. We take our own boats across on the charter so you will also need to contibute to the cost of them.

Call Graham 0412 945 722 for further information.

Recfish board elections

Recfish board elections are coming up soon. WAUC's Joe Petrovich is the only spearo on the board and we must ensure his place remains on the board so as to keep WA Spearo interests on the agenda We all should join recfish (think its $20 a year) and vote for Joe to retain his seat. If Joe doesnt get re-elected, WA Spearos effectively lose their voice when it comes to consultation between WA government/fisheries and the fishing public. www.recfishwest.org.au Recfishwest is a representative body of dedicated and concerned anglers, which is independent of government and which represents the interests of all Western Australian recreational fishers at the local, state and federal level.

Macks

Not from WA, as i've moved to QLD recently, but thought i'd share some snaps of the fish we've been getting of late. Macks can be hard on an arvo shore dive, jacks too, YTK's a plenty and tuskies all over. Nice!

Big Snapper Run

What is the peak time of the year the snapper run in Cockburn sound?

Some one was saying the other day october is the time to be out the channel & stragglers, but watch out as they are followed by big Noah's..

Would be keen to spear my first pink. THe last International freediver mag was on about how dificult they are to spear due to the flat ground..

the beagles

saturday at 4pm left work and went straight to my mate joes house, we got all the spearfishing gear out and got in the car for a nice 4 hour drive up leeman and just past there, when we arrived the other boat going out was there and we talked around a fire till about 11pm.

the next morning, everyones swags were covered in ice and the unlucky gavin, whose wife took his sleeping bag out without him knowing, had quite a few words to say about the weather, many not allowed to be mentioned on here.

After standing around the fire it was time to wetsuit up. i was the first to get suited up, bad idea as well lets just say i thought i was turning into a woman when i took my 3 layers off.  everyone got suited up and we headed down to the beaches for an 8am start.  dave's boat headed out right, our boat, consisting of joe, justin and myself headed out towards the islands.

we started off looking for the rare coral trout there but with no luck so we headed out behind the main reef.  we all went our separate ways for a while, i got a few buffies which i chummed up with and joe did the same although he headed out into the deeper water looking for macks. we all met up at the boat later on me and justin empty handed as all i saw were small baldies, lots of black arse and also a few blue grouper. Joe on the other hand got a 17kg mack and said he saw another one with his one so we all went out for the nice long swim out into the depths for a mackie drift.  as joe chummed a buffie into squares me and justin dove down 15-20m each time and just moved around lots to try attract them but nothing came.

after about 20 minutes and the buffie now almost completely gone, justin spots a sambo. i dove down to get him but as i got to the bottom i couldnt find it and so went back up to see where it got to. justin dove down next and now a larger sambo had joined and he proceeded to hit it with his new riffe cannon.  the shot was good but the sambo was also big and it started to pull him quite a bit and before we knew it he was out in the distance - trying to land his fish. me and joe kept trying to get the mackies to come when i hear a distant, uggh and whuuuu, justin came in with such a speed, well he would have smoked phelps to say the least, and then i heard the distinct name of why he was shouting. White pointer.

it seemed that his sambo had attracted a 4m whitey and it had snuck up on him so when he got to us joes first words were "wheres ur gun?" but as it turns out his sambo had gone under a swim through and so his gun was one side and the fish and spear on the other side when this very dark shadow came in over the weed.  Us 3 all we over to get his gear back and just before we got there the white swam out to check us out, such a magnificent creature, no scars, perfect colours, just amazing to see and only 8m away.

he swam off and we retrived the gear and the now eaten sambo as we presume. we then headed into the inside to a spot they call buffie holes because they had once seen a school of dhuies there and some one thought they were  buffies. it was here in only about 8m of water i pegged a 4-5kg dhuie and while killing it and gutting it a much bigger pair around 10-12 and 15-16kgs came and sat under me for a while. i kept diving and did a near miss on a decent baldie and saw quite a few more dhuies and baldies when i decided to head in.   it was now around 6pm and the sun was on the horizion and we headed back. final fish tally: 2 dhuies, 1 mack, 1 breaksea cod. so we didnt max our bag limits but hey we got plenty of fish to last us for quite a while. next trip: exmouth then abrolhos.

and thats our little adventure sat/sunday.

rotto 2 morrow

anyone know of a general idea of a good spot to see some dhuies or snapper or baldchin around rotto? in about 10ish m depth as my mates not to great at freediving, or any other sorta regions were it is like 18mish with like high bomies. not asking for like an exact spot but more just for a general area were we might have a chance for some good fish. any help would be highly appreciated, also taking some rods so might try for a few fish after a quick dip
