Newbie to spearfishing

Howdy,

I have been doing some snorkel for a while now and would like to try my hand at spear fishing. Just thought I would introduce myself and ask a few questions. I hope you do not mind.

-Are there any good areas (in or near Perth metro) to learn to spearfish that are shallow and have a low shark number? I do not have a boat.
-Are there any maps that will tell me where I can spearfish. I have been searching for most of the  week and still cannot find anything that lays tells me exactly where I can.
-I am looking at getting the undersee phantom 1000 is this a good gun for a beginner? Would anyone have any recommendations for around $200? Anyone selling one second hand?
-Any really good stores to go to have a look at spear diving equipment?

Any other tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated. I hope to meet some of you in the future. Thank you in advance.

See you out there.

Quick SW Report

Went for a dive near Hamelin on Saturday, beautiful conditions. Managed my first Nanny and a nice queenie. Few other bits and pieces too, some skippy etc that we turned into burley. Didn;t see any dhuies unfortuantely but found some nice new ground.

On a lighter note, hroughout the day we saw plenty of wobbie, some quite large, and had a bit of fun stirring them up. Eventually found a little port jackson shark, grabbed him by the tail and surfaced, crept up behind my mate (who's a newbie diver) and tapped him on the shoulder, a few frantic kicks backwards and I relaeased it aimed towards him. The little prick went straight for his groin and stayed attached for around 15mins. p***ed myself several times and in the end the bugger eventually let go. No injuries uncurred other than some bruising, lucky they don't have teeth. He later told me while we were trying to get it off and it was flapping around he was genuinely scared he'd losre his manhood.

Will think twice about pointing em towards anythign in the future!

Unbelieveable story I know, only wish i'd had my Ikelite and taken some footage, Joe sh**ing himself with a shark attached to his groin, would've got 100000 hits on youtube in the first hour I rekon. Most 'memorable' diving moment ever.

Hydropneumatic guns in Perth?

I've been doing some research before buying a spare gun, and came across the hydropneumatic designs for the first time while trawling the net. Anyone know of any stockists in Perth? Or has anyone had any experience with them?

And before you jump in and say "plenty", I already have a regular pneumatic which I'm very happy with and I'm not after another one. I've also done rubber before. There are some significant differences in design, and i'm specifically interested in the hydropneumatic models!

Any advice would be great!

inshore metro spearfishing

gday all - just wondering if anybody knows of any notable spearfishin captures from metro inshore reefs - im talkin the ones that are about 3 - 4 m deep - eg cow rocks or wanneroo reef . also anybody that would like to go for a free dive in the next few months - its alright if you look more like a seal than me you can still come

looking for new/used spear gun

hey i have got at the monent a lil dogey spear i gun i just used to start of with. it is alright for the littler reef such as queenies and red lips. i wann get a better gun cause i was quite devestated when i saw a 1.5m+ estury cod just sitting there and i got the gun about 10 cm from its hed. i aimed just behind the eyes and when i shot it just bounced of its skull... it then lazily just swam of while i was trying to reload. i dont want anything like that to happen again. i am heading to south afirca on wedensday so ill have a look at some rob allen guns but i am just gennerally looking for a good spear gun with a good sharp, hard tip, with preferably 2 rubbers. also is there any good areas of beaches or in the sound for spearfishing. of the beaches i mean about 1-2kms beacuse that is about how far out ill be able to swim. i am located in perth, Winthrop

Steep

Well got back from a few days in Steep. Unfortunately the weather made it unviable to dive the outside along the cliffs, but we had a blast in the passage. Mainly targetted Baldies and Tuskies, got a few parroties too as everyone there thought they were good chew.

Had a few run ins with sharks although nothing serious. Can't wait to get back

The lineo's had no trouble finding plenty of macks too. Shark and Spanish.

Spearfishing North of C'von

Better late than never. Saturday, Feb 21 Misch and Ben had a go at a spot that none of us had tried before, a place with a lot of deep gutters and high rising coral bommies, some might notice it from the pictures. The boys told of various small Mackerel, different Trevally species, a number of Sharks and even a Coral Trout being seen! All I saw was perfect conditions, small surf and birds working out wide. I was restricted to watching from the beach due to losing a clip off one of my fins, time for a new pair I reckon, so didn’t get to dive but got some great shots of the conditions and the fish. Still, what a day!

Here are just a few… Enjoy

Check out the mouth on that Cod!

Spearfishing the North-West

Headed up the coast today for a quick dive at a local spot. Conditions were fantastic and we managed a good feed aswell. After shooting his Baldie Misch was harassed by a 12ft Hammerhead and had to come in through the breakers! Surprised just aswell we left him 5min before Tongue out It was good day to get out. Got back to town n had fresh fish n chips Smile Cod was estimated at about 5 and the Baldie 6kg.

Hi,

saw one of these in a diveshop down in Mossie Park. They're pretty cheap and apparently a few people have them mounted as speargun cam.

First Fish Speared in Exmouth

Now that we have the new Spearfishing section thought I would start adding some pictures from the last exmouth trip.

Not the biggest trout, but for the first dive and the first fish speared in Exmouth I was pretty happy.

Perth Shorebased Spots

I am well aware of the trigg-burns boundaries, along with the shoalwater and cottesloe marine parks.

Is there any other areas we can't go shore based, as I am chasing areas I can do this from for bread and butter fish.

Anyone got an idea of some good areas to grab a feed?

cheers

Spearing the Menu

Spearing the Menu

Pity about the demise of Channel 31 in Perth otherwise we might have seen it here too. One of the other free to air channels might decide to use it.... (can always hope...)

Media release received today (no link yet)

Quote:
Spearfishing is coming to free-to-air TV

A ground breaking television show has been produced by Bellarine Peninsula’s In-Depth Productions. Spearing the Menu is a new adventure program that takes you underwater in search of fresh ocean delights and back into the kitchen to cook up the catch.

The Spearing the Menu team consists of three marine scientists and a teacher, all experienced freedivers and spearfishers, who educate the viewers on the marine environment and our guiding principles of Safe, Sustainable, Selective spearfishing.

“We hope our enthusiasm for the marine environment will encourage people to get out and explore the underwater world for themselves” says presenter Sean Blake.

This first series consists of seven episodes showcasing some of the best diving Victoria has to offer, as well as spectacular, and at times adrenaline fuelled, action from the Coffs Coast, NSW.

Matt Koopman, one of the shows presenters says ”We are excited to be bringing the underwater action into peoples living rooms, and hope to expose this poorly understood sport to the mainstream.”

Spearing the Menu will begin airing on C31 Melbourne on 7th September at 9pm, TVS Sydney on 17th September at 7pm, C31 Adelaide on 17th September at 8:30pm and QCTV on 9th September at 7pm.

Spearing the Menu has been backed by Geelong Otway Tourism Incorporated the Melbourne based Legendary Skindiving Equipment and Bellarine Estate winery.

Spearfishing on compressed air in Exmouth

Just want to clarify the rules:

Spearfishing in the gulf is ok?

Spearfishing around the islands is ok except in the conservation areas?

Inside the marine park only freediving north of tantibiddi?

Does all that sound correct
