Xmas Island Questions
Submitted by merman on Tue, 2013-02-05 20:47Hi Guys,
Any chance any of you have speared over at Christmas Island? I'm there for a week in June and am contemplating taking the robbie allen over with me.
I know it turns deep very quickly around the island but are there any nearshore areas to ping a trout or two??
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Cheers

Riffe Digitec suit
Submitted by ca11um on Mon, 2013-01-21 09:29Hey guys, i recently purchased a Riffe Digitec suit (3mm) and was putting it on for a quick swim yesterday. It was a hell of pain to put it on!! It kept sticking to my skin, it was a struggle even once i dunked it in the water and covered myself in water. So i need to get some lube for it, is there any particular brand i should get?? Also do you rub the lube on your body or inside the wetsuit?? Sorry about the noob questions...
cheers, Callum

dolphin fish
Submitted by fishing fanatic on Mon, 2012-12-31 10:07Went out to the fads yesterday with some mates for some spearfishing and manged a 7kg dollie. there were only about 12 in the school to start with but the current was huge! you have about 15 second to drift from 100m before the fad till 30m after the fad, and only about a 4 second gap where the fish were shootable if you came close enough, the biggest in the school looked about 9kg and it had line hangning out of its mouth.
we also after doing about 5 or so drifts had another boat come in to fish the fads, very rude guys as they started abusing our boaty becuse the dive flag was down (probably fell down about 2 minutes before they came on the last drift) and then took a photo of our boat and started shouting how we are gonna get a fine for it? i wont if they know that legally speaking free divers arent actaully allowed to have the white and blue flag up :P anyway they then started to work the fad which we didnt mind as they waited for our drift first then did theirs and so on for a while but then they started doing drifts with us, and so their boat was within about 20m of me and my mate in the water, very dangerous stuff especially with a current like that.
all in all a good day and im keen to get back out there already, we dove 2 fads the club marine had dollies and the one closest to rotto had only baby yellow tail kings.

Submitted by fishing fanatic on Sat, 2012-12-08 22:07I went up north for thursday with some mates chasing mackerel, only manged to get my spear into one but saw quite a few not to many bigger models with most being 10-15 and a couple of 18kgs crusing in at one point. I managed to shoot this one from in between three sharks as were were surrounded by 3-8 at a time all day while burleying, wasnt metro, was just a bit north of jurein bay, heaps of baldys up to 7kg and dhuies up to 6kg though, and i never seen that many 1kg+ blackarse in my life.
One of many mackys this season i hope :) next dive i want this ones mum!

Thanks again
Submitted by Nath86 on Sun, 2012-12-02 17:42Once agian, cheers for the help. He went 67cm and a perfect head shot. A quick question. If they are already dead do you still recommend bleeding them?
I used a bit of foam matting to help reload and that helped heaps too.

Cheers for the help
Submitted by Nath86 on Sat, 2012-12-01 15:13Just a quick cheers for the help and info on spearfishing.
Braved the wind out of Dampier today and got my first bluebone at 50cm. I slid in, loaded, took a breath, dove down and spotted and got him straight away. Pretty stoked for the first breath of a dive.
Into the esky he went and back in the drink I went. I couldn't belive it when I had another 2 of similar size swimming around me but with the new rubber I put on it I couldn't load the bast**d. I had to jump back in the boat and put a towel across my stomache to load the gun, I will definately need to work on the technique. Jumped back in and they were gone. Not to worry, it will just keep me wanting to come back.
Cheers Nath

Replacement rubbers advice.
Submitted by Nath86 on Mon, 2012-11-26 19:00Hi all, I took my gun out one the weekend and got a nice spango which I was happy with but unfortunately lost a nice bluebone when he shook the spear. Saw acouple of monster bluebone as well so for a first dive it was very promising.
My gun needs it rubbers replaced anyway so I've bought some new rubber and some briddles to create some new ones up. My question is that I've gone from 14mm to 16mm for the extra power should my new rubber be the same length as the old 14mm or a bit longer because of the extra thickness? Also will the rubber stretch out a bit making it easier to load? I'm not the bigest guy and even with extra length in the rubbers its pretty hard to stretch the needed length.

Which spear gun to choose?
Submitted by Griffo84 on Thu, 2012-11-22 11:20G'day all,
I am looking at buying a new speargun at xmas time and I'm particulary interested in the rabitech steal pro and the riffe guns as I've heard great reviews about both types. I am after a gun around the 1.2m mark with perhaps twin 16mm rubbers. Also it needs to be fairly easy to load, powerful and of course pin point accurate.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ben

Getting into spearfishing - Dampier
Submitted by Nath86 on Mon, 2012-11-19 18:18Hi all,
I'm pretty keen to get in a and give spearing a go.
I've picked up a second hand Seacsub Xtreame 95 that should get me started but I'm after any general tips, tricks or info.
Also After doing a bit of research I see Adreano have the Rob Allen Tuna rail guns on for a bit of a deal. $400 down from $600.
Would the 110 be any good for in around the reefs chasing trout and blue bones.
I'm going to need a second gun anyway down the track when my brother moves back up so are these any good / suited for what i want to do?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers Nath

I've just recently moved to Geraldton and looking for a diving buddy who knows the area fairly well.
Been out to point Moore and that's pretty good for groppers and Samson fish. Anywhere closer to the port for spearfishing?

WA Undersea Club offers subsidised freedive courses
Submitted by Notorious on Thu, 2012-11-08 22:34Shallow water blackout is by far the main cause of fatalities from freedive spearfishing.
The WAUC is providing all members with the opportunity to apply for a subsidized freedive course run by Erez Beatus of Apnea Australia.
Cost to successful applicants will be $225.00, normal cost $550
There are 22 places up for grabs for Stage A and Stage B courses.
The knowledge gained from the course will assist in the awareness of the dangers of freediving. The aim is to develop and foster a culture and practice of safe freediving. Graham has emailed all members the application forms, if you haven't received your copy, message me and I will pass it on.
You must be a current financial member to be eligible.
