Spots Around Dampier/Karratha
Submitted by mcollier_84 on Sat, 2010-04-17 10:29
Anyone know of any good spots for a spear around the dampier archipelago or close to shore out of Karratha? I have a 15 foot runnabout to get me out there. Heard around rosmary island is good for crays aswell?

Submitted by silly on Thu, 2010-03-18 21:37what are the seac sub asso spearguns like?? Thinking of getting one as an opportunistic gun while craying. Probaly just going to go for a 75 or 90 to keep it fairly compact.

speargun advice
Submitted by Muppet on Sat, 2010-03-13 18:13Hey guys,
I'm chasing a bit of advice about my 1000mm railgun.
I replaced the line on it, but i am unsure whether i have made it the correct length.
How long on average should the line be ?
Mine is 3 lengths of the gun.
I dont seem to be able to get close enough without spooking the fish, or it could be that i am just a crap shot !
cheers

Magic Weekend
Submitted by Toby Roe on Thu, 2010-02-04 11:06Hi everyone, Who else is getting excited about the weekend? Magic weather, calm and over cast to bring my nemesis the mackerel to the surface for longer. I reckon there will be a few fish caught. Fingers crossed. P.S. Since I am new on here I will quickly introduce myself. I love fishing and spearfishing (DAH), my weapon of choice in a 1.2m Orca but I also love my telescopic SS gidgee passed down from the old man. My comfortable dive depth is about 8-10m but I have reached 15m. And I am a totally hopeless fisherman (both types) so I don’t expect to be posting on the brag board much. Cheers

ear equilizing
Submitted by wide open on Mon, 2010-01-18 16:36hi everyone recently doing some freediving and some spearfishing and have some questions
could you tell me how all you equilize your ears because the valsalva pinch and blow technique does not work for me if head down and even normally it doesnt work well
another thing i've come across is just swallowing it works but still a bit hard to do head first
so i've heard of frenzel technique, now i can just not really find good info on how to do it, could you shed some light.
and has anyone else had a problem with equilizing head first

Freedive
Submitted by dd83wa on Fri, 2010-01-01 17:09Thought I would post up a pic of a dive I did last weekend. 24.4m. Down for 52 seconds only.
Felt very comfortable when I turned and ascended. Am going to have a crack at breaking 30m tomorrow if everything works out and I have someone to spot me on the bottom.

Hamelin
Submitted by dd83wa on Sun, 2009-12-20 12:25Hit up Hamelin Bay Yesterday.
Southerlies were blowing a gale and vis was average.
Managed a cracker of a red snapper which was promptly taken by a very large bronzie, biggest ive seen and showed a small amount of interest in me, but seemed to be after my fish. So swam holding my fish for quite some time, knocked off a big queenie and a sambo. When I was about 100m from the boat id let the fish go on the end of my rope and i started to get towed backwards again. Popped my head up to see a lot of white wash and my dive buddies standing on the boat with their mouths wide open. Pulled myself towards the stringer and lost only my sambo and a few skippy. Queenie had some impressive bite marks on it but the $20 SD Card I bought off Ebay seems to have sh*t itself. Absolutely spewing!!!!!!!!!
No dhuies sighted for 4hrs in the water, 8-14m. Did see a smallish nurse shark moping about the bottom.
And after the shark sighting I was 1 dive buddie down
On another note, does anyone know where to get cheap brand name SD cards?

loading my mares cyrano 970
Submitted by wayneleech on Fri, 2009-12-18 15:39hi all,
I finally got around to buying my mares cyrano 970.
I've just put it together though am finding that its quite hard to load it. I'm not loading it to the point that it's clicked in though I'm just trying to slide it say halfway into the gun.
At the moment I'm only getting it a couple cms in. It seems that I'm putting a fair bit of pressure on it (to the point that the shaft starts flexing) though it doesn't want to go any further.
Does anyone have any tips? Are they easier to load under water?
Perhaps I just need to harden up! Only thing is I don't want to push it to hard as it feels that the shaft could bend...
Cheers

Yanchept / Two Rocks area
Submitted by Daniel Y on Mon, 2009-11-23 20:33Thinking of heading up that way tomorrow. Anyone know if you are allowed to spear up there? Last I heard you weren't allowed in the lagoon, but whats the go with the surrounding areas?
If you are allowed, is there even anything around at the moment?
Planning on going for a spear during the day whilst it's hot and then fish for tailor in the arvo.

Shark Bay Spear Report
Submitted by dd83wa on Sun, 2009-11-22 10:06Well, got back from Shark Bay not long ago and had an amazing time. We stayed at Tamala Station as Steep Point was booked out, but what a spot. Amazing scenery, nice and protected and swarming with tuskies and black snapper.
Explored lots of small islands, and there were fish on every one of them. As you can see we were blessed with good conditions too.
Also found some shark nurseries each with atleast 50 tiny little sharks in them, that was a very cool dive.
It was the first time the old man had even picked up a speargun let alone shot a fish and he did very well, we both knocked over some absolutely thumping blackspots and he had a blast once he got the re-loading sussed out.
Planning a trip to Steep in April but definitely keen to stop off at Tamala for a couple of days if we get the chance.
Great spot for anyone interested in fishing or spearing I guess, good for beginners to spearing because its all less than 5m. For those wanting to strecth the lungs we saw over 15m in the middle of the gulf but there were only pinkies and they were no take.

Immersion black fins
Submitted by merman on Mon, 2009-11-16 13:20Hey guys,
Just wondering if any spearos use the black immersion fins?? I'm looking to find out if anyone has had any problems with them. I've got a pair and they have been a great fin for what I have needed and very comfortable however just recently they developed a white line just in front of the foot pocket (like a bend in plastic) and they have now basically lost all their power!!
Has anyone else had the same issue?? How long should you get out of a pair of fins?? (yeh yeh I know it depends on how often you use them) Has anyone heard of a bad batch?? I've just been told of another pair seen hanging out of a wheely bin with the same issue!!
Let me know.

Shark repel units "Freedom 7"
Submitted by Bliksim on Mon, 2009-11-09 13:19"FREEDOM 7" Shark repel units? I purchased a shark repel unit recently and tested it out this week end, I am very confident that the unit works, had a 2m Bronzy come in and have a look, but it did not venture closer than 7 to 8 m from us. As people have said they tend to stay outside the shock zone, and don't hang around too long afterwards.
It would be interesting if other divers have tried this unit and share their experiences's or finding's with us. noticibly the rays and fish (Dhu) were not at all affected ata all the rass seamed to like bitting the trailing antenna.
I attached two small fishing floats to the antenna to keep the it from snagging on the reef, It was absolutely no hassel diving with this unit. It gave me a great sence of security, but I still have some concern's as to the white pointers, and how they will react?? thats the million dollar question??
