Looking for new Speargun, Any recommendations??

Hi all fairly new to this site.

I am looking at the Omer et rail 130 speargun, has anyone got one and if so is it any good??

Or better still which do you find to be the ducks nuts?? Hoping not to pay much more than say $500

I would prefer a min size of 1400?

Looking fwd to replies.

having trouble with the flop

G'day to everbody

i just got a cressi mohawk.didnt notice yesterday when having a short dive but the flopper only freely opens so that the tip of the flopper is about 15mm off the shaft.after that you have to push it open, then it will stay open.is this normal becasuse a can see a reason for it but not sure if thats how its supposed to bee,its not ben,and i have tried oiling it.

speros

Went out again on monday to our new ground we have came across and in karratha and seen well over 20 size trout and a large number of blue bones. After finally picking one that was large enough to satisfy i slammed the spear through the top of its head and after strugling with it for about 20 seconds while it was trying to pull under a ledge and into a narrow cave it ripped the spear. Lucky enough there was a small hole about 25cm in diameter a meter and a half back from the enterance to the cave wich was too narrow to see into. There was blood pouring out od this small hole so after getting my breath back it was time to dive down and shove my hand though and see what i could find - after getting my arm in there and having to fully extend it in there to reach the end i felt the fish with its head rammed that hard into the sand and rocks at the back there was no way of grabbing it by the gills and ripping it out. four dives later i gave up on this method and just grabbed it by the tail which normally there is no way of doing due to how slimy they are but i managed to pull it out tail first and the rest is history.

as you can see in the pics it got a bit of a hammering (72cm trout)

sea hornet shaft

just a quick question.

is the shaft of a sea hornet 8mm?

Riffe Bluewater gun

Hey guys i am selling a RIFFE Bluewater gun with front stabaliser www.riffe.com.au/product.php . I have a spare 3/8 shaft with slip tip both never used. It comes with a Riffe Bag, 15 meter Riffe float line and 7 meter Riffe bungee. The gear is in very good condition the gun has a couple of small scuffs on the stock, due to placing on the deck of the boat, This setup was purchased for a Bluewater trip which was 1 week long. I have no need for this anymore. This is a perfect setup for a serious Spearfisherman that want`s to shoot big fish.

I am asking $1600 for the lot. without the spare shaft and sliptip it cost over $2200.

Cheers

Jumped in

Jumped in today for a swim out back of Boat Beach...pretty quiet...a couple of esturay cod spotted left to swim for another day...small blue bone...not bothered...still nice to get the hair wet...

Howd you guys go?

Newbie to Spearing

Ihave recently bought all the spearfishing gear and have been out a couple of times to no avail. Was wondering if someone wanted to do either a convoy or deckie it up to do a bit of spearing? Would love the experience to go out with someone with a bit of experience under the belt. I launch at woodies point but can travel anywhere.

Cheers

Damon.

Spearing in the Pilbara

Hey so I moved to karratha late last year and on my days off I try to get into some fish. I mainly target trout and baldys. I have a boat and have slowly exploring the area.  Most of the time I go by myself or the missus. which is good but would be better with some diving company.

Is there anyone who is into spearing or fishing who would be keen to come or I could go with?

I am not looking for a free ride or to take your spots. Just want people to go out with. Share the same hobbies with.

Let us know

Matt

Abrolhos Islands Trip

It all began about 2 months ago one night when i was slowly monitoring the forums. Back hunched, half a sleep, slouched back in my chair. I needed some motivation. I scrolled through the reports and various threads on the WAUC website, looking for something that would catch my eye. I hit the top of list and the words "Abrolhos Spearing Trip" caught my attention straight away. I straightened up, leaned in and clicked on the link. The thoughts of big Dhufish, reel screaming Mackies, gear wrecking trout and Bulky Baldchin Groupers appeared in my mind as i read through the comments.

I had always wanted to go to the Abrolhos Islands, hearing stories of huge schools of Mackies cruising through the drop-offs, massive Dhufish patrolling their territory, Big Baldies delicately cruising through the sand patches and the stories of Crayfish that were hidden in every nook and cranny just made me want to grab my gun and catch the first plane up there!! It sounded like the kind of place where miracles are born. I had a chat with Dad and he gave me the OK for the trip. I slapped myself in the face, making sure i wasnt dreaming. Pain rushed towards my face, but not the kind of pain that makes you cringe. It was the pain that made me realise that i was actually going to this awesome place!!! I was finally going to the Abrolhos Islands!!!

2 months later and i was running around like a Mackie that had a spear planted through its tail. I packed all the essentials and some. The tinny was hitched on the back of the car and we took off. I read nearly every article in my spearing mags on the way up, i couldnt sit still and i was buzzing to get out there. After about 6 hours of driving we finally reached Geraldton. We grabbed some food and headed towards the Harbour. We pulled up and there was a few other guys patiently waiting on the boat that was going to be called home for the next few days, the Island Leader. We loaded our gear on the boat and had the Tinny pulled up on top of the Island Leader, via a crane. More and more cars and boats pulled in and the big boat was slowly filling up. Eventually we got all 6 boats and all 23-25 WAUC members on board. The Island Leader was pushed off and the big diesel motor was started. Excitement came over me when i heard the big motor come to life, the trip i had been waiting ages for was finally happening.

Once we were out of the Harbour, majority of the club went to sleep in the tiny mattresses at the bow of the boat. Ear plugs were a necessity with belching motor chugging along. It took me a while to fall asleep because i was just buzzing like an alarm clock. What fish would we see? What fish would we shoot? What fish am i gonna miss that will haunt me in my dreams? Questions like these were flying around my head. I eventually got some sleep at a very late hour, only to be waken by the extremely loud Anchor that went down at about 3:30!! I got up after that to see what was happening outside. There was a few people outside as well, they had obviously been disturbed by the Anchor chain as well. I looked around the back of the boat and i could faintly see the outer reefs breaking. The bottom was just visible at about 4m deep below the boat. I slowly walked back to bed, waiting for sunlight to arrive.

The whole club was as busy as ever, preparing their guns. Sharpening spears, bending spears, making rig lines and lots of other little adjustments were being made as i crept out of bed. There was a few words spoken by Joe Petrovich and after that it was straight into getting the boats off the Island Leader and into the water. The little boats shot out in various directions, making white lines across the surface as they skipped across the flat ocean. Finally our boat was on the water and the gear was loaded on.

After inspecting our first spot which was crap, Jacques, Dad and I shot off towards a little reef edge that dropped off from about 6m to 12m or so. I jumped in and as soon as the water hit my face i instantly felt better, not diving for a few months takes the life out of you!! We followed this along spotting an amazing array of sea life. Those big baldies i had heard of were everywhere and there were so many parrotfish and other reef species nipping at the coral reef. First few dives were amazing, inspecting the reef overhangs and just soaking up the whole experience. I took a dive and spotted a nice Spangled Emperor swimming away from me. I silently followed him and just as he turned to see me i fired a shot that semi-stoned him. I pulled him up and marvelled at my prize, my first Abrolhos fish!! I got Dad to take a couple of photos and then straight back into it.

Jacques pinned a nice Baldchin Grouper after my fish and i could tell today was only going to get better!!!I I followed the reef edge south of the Boat and met up with Dad there. He took a dive and took a shot at another Spangled Emperor but the spear pulled out. The footage turned out great though!! I was trying to get some footage of all the fish and got right up close to some fish. I found a nice little kink in the reef and i was watching Dad dive down and inspect the ledge. As he popped up i turned around and thats when i seen him. It had that characteristic boofy head with two bulging eyes like light bulbs. It was staring straight at me and I dove down to meet the Dhuie.

As i got closer he turned and i took the very first shot i had it. At first i didn't the spear had gone all the way through but then i seen the flopper engage as he bolted for the bottom. I was relieved and just as i looked down at my fish, another 5 or so Dhuies arrived!! There was one that would have been pushing 15kg+ but we were only allowed to spear 1 Dhuie per boat!! I focused back on my fish and after a short tussle i pulled him up to me. I stuck my hand in its gills and got Dad to take some footage of my first freedived Dhuie. As Dad was filming we seen a black shadow to the side. We turned and seen a big Seal who was very keen on a slab of Dhuie, but i wasn't letting him anywhere near it!! We filmed the seal for a while and then we never seen him again, thank goodness!! I was so stoked to finally get a Dhuie freediving :D

After that we moved along the reef edge and came to the tip of the reef. The water got deeper and bluer and we all jumped in like a flash!! I was getting deeper and deeper with every dive and was soon reaching 15m which is a PB depth for me. I spotted some big Trout in amongst the bommies and i was trying to nail one of them but couldnt get close enough. Dad on the other hand had shot a decent fish that had reefed him so with a bit of team work we eventually got his fish out. I could almost taste the trout on my tongue when he chucked him in the boat, mmmm :D

We kept looking around and Jacques shot another decent Trout as well which went awesome with the curry we had that night!! Not much else was seen for the rest of the day except for one big mackie which i seen but he was too cagey and i couldnt get a shot :( After that we headed in for some lunch and waited for the other boys to come in.

After a little while i decided to have a flick with Dads Tuna setup that was rigged with a 20gm twisty so i cast it straight from the back of the Island Leader, let it sink and started winding. 6th Crank of the handle and BANG, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!! Something had smashed it and after a 10 minute tussle on the light gear a 8-10kg Shark Mackerel was fighting hard underneath me. Jacques quickly raced over and put the net under him and brought him on broad!! First Shark Mackerel ever which was a big surprise and i was still in my wetsuit :P

Finally the other boats came in and they cleaned up with Coral Trout, Dhufish, Mackies, Wahoo, Baldies, Coronation trout and various Emperors.

Story's of the one that got away were frequent and there were some great tales told!! A few Sharks were hassling some of the boats which was unnerving and some were quite big as well o.O Dinner was awesome, Green fish curry was superb and the battered Dhufish was deluxe!!! We ate like kings, everyone stuffed themselves with fish and it was an awesome feed.  After that awesome feed i hit the sack ready for the next day on the water ;)

I was woken up by the ruckus outside and i got up to see all the boys running around getting sorted. I looked outside and the sun still wasnt up, not something i was used to. By the time the sun had hit the horizon everybody was straight back out there heading towards fish rich grounds. Dad and I headed out to try and see if we could find some Baitballs but that plan was canned as the weather was hairier then we thought. We ended up anchoring on a deep drop-off and waiting for the Macks to come to us. We stayed there for a little while and only had a few inquisitive Shark Macks come to the party but we were after Spanish Mackerel.

We upped the anchor and decided to go and see if we could nail a big Baldie in close before the wind blew us away. We found some nice bottom adjacent to some sand and the Baldies were everywhere but we were really looking for that monster one. I seen one bruiser but he was so cagey, as soon as he seen me he was out of there!! So i gave Dad the camera and he filmed me shooting the next biggest one we could find. I stoned him straight away and was pretty happy that dad filmed the whole thing :) After that we headed back in as the weather was getting worse by the minute. We got a couple of shots of the Baldie and then awaited the rest of the boats.

Another heap of fish was brought in by the other boats but was lacking Pelagics. The fish were cleaned and then boats were lifted atop of the Island Leader again. We began to head back to geraldton, leaving the pristine and fish filled waters of the Abrolhos behind :( I was happy with what i had got though and i can't wait to do it again!! As we got out of the Islands the swell became pretty big and the boat was rocking back and forth, making everybody who was walking look like they were drunk :P I had a little sleep, or at least tried to but i kept sliding on my mattress cause of the swell :P

Once we reached the harbour, the gear was unloaded and we said fair well to everyone. We stayed at an old hotel in gero and i still couldnt contain my excitement from those past few days!!! I was so happy with all the fish we got and cant wait to do it again!!! Thanks to all the guys from WAUC who made this awesome event possible, it was one of the best experiences of my life!!!

A video of the trip can be seen here,

Cheers for reading, Callum

New to this spearo stuff

Hi Guys based in Kingsley and new to this.

Its amazing what u'll try when you get old. My son has taken up spearfishing and my daughter scuba-diving, so I have to follow suit.

Being 50 i think i may be biting off more than I can chew.

Anyway figure I'll buy a reasonablly good gun so that I won't have to upgrade and it should be easier to move if I need to sell it. I can get hold of 2 brand new Rob allen Tuna (110 or 120) guns for about AUD 330-00 each (my mate is coming down for a holiday and will be bringing them with him).

So couple of questions:

Is this a good all round gun? I know it is probably not ideal but I was aiming for something that will be good for Reefs as well as a "open water" gun for later use? if I ever progress that far. The 2nd one would be a backup gun.

Is it worth while getting a carbon rail or will this Aluminun one do.

Are there any problems with it?

Are there any advantages to a wooden gun, they sell some in Indo, a Ulusub ??!!!

Any comments/ suggestions would be great

Thanx

Anyway back home in a month (FIFO) and I am going to start collecting the gear.

stealth v mowhahk

G'day

have decided on either a rabitech stealth pro (aluminium) or a cressi mowhawk (aluminium) both in the 110.

i can get both for the same price.the cressi has a more comfortable handle but i have been told that rabitechs are one hell of an accurate gun.

does anybody have either of these guns?

if so what do and dont you like?

cheers

sparid loading ?

g'day

just wondering how you fellas load the rob allen guns? they look like bastard to load without the butt. i was looking at the sparid for a secondary gun and also just non serious trips away.

so do you load the on the tigh/groin area or is it a chest load gun?

cheers

Couple of Trout

Went out for a fish around Dampier without to much success, as the wind blew up the esky was still looking pretty dissapointing, so decided to head back in and stop at a pretty reliable bombie. within half an hour had bagged my 2 trout and all was good with the world again. Needless to say a good feed was had by all.

South West Report

Hi all, went for dive down south on Saturday with a couple mates.  Conditions were quite good 10-12m vis .  Great dive with lots of sea life. Saw a nice wobby, port jackson, fox fish ,harlequin, stingrays, sambo's and loads of bait fish.  My mates also saw a 6ft  bronzy but I was not so lucky.

Had to work quite hard but ended the day with 1 x Blue grouper 1 x sambo, 1 x cuttlefish ( snared ) 2 x crays ( 1 jumbo ) and 8 green and 2 brown lip abs between the 3 of us.

Cooked up right there on the rock a sample of all the spices listed and watched the sun setting before the 3 hour drive home.  17 hours from start to finish. Was it worth it? You bet!

Ps sorry no pick of the sambo it was filleted and gone by the time I came back in. It was estimated at 20 kgs.

Metro macks on the straight hook *photos added*

hey everyone, notcied how good the weather was going to be on sunday so me and the boys stated planning where to go, orignally it was going to be our secret mack and baldy spot south of jurien but then with reports of terrible vis on saturday we gave that spot a miss. then it was decided for west end. sunday morning at 5:45 i am at joe's houe and he says we are taking out his bigger boat and hitting a differnt spot more towards garden island. target being only macks. so of we go to start our 100km round trip

We get to the spot only to see 16 lino boats out there so we found a nice little secluded lump and jumped in. vis was good 25m+ and we were in about 24m water. me and nick set of both with brand new fins (him with dive-R mediums, and me with pentetrator mediums) and start looking for berely. we dive down and find a nice school of buffies in about 18m and peg one each. onto the berely line they go and we begin berelying. the other 4 divers are hanging of the mermaid line waiting for the berely to hit them. after about 3 mintues of berelying we head down the line. wouldnt u know it, joe has a 12kg mack on his spear and with out noticing, adam had a 23.5kg mack on the boat already! so we start diving. and hard. but to no avail didnt see a single other mack. joe saw some small dhuies in the 27m mark and i saw some little yellow tail kings and and normal reef fish. so after a few hours we change spots. this time to a very deep water pinnicle

38m on the sides 24m on top so for 4/6 of us not much we could do without being on the pinnicle. joe some how still manages to find a shelf but with nothing but small dhuies on it. so we change again. this time we anchor in about 26m of water. we set the mermaid line out and i start berelying. one of the guys calls out they saw a tuna so we head towards them. i notice joe at the end of the mermaid line so i swim to him. wouldnt u know it theres a 18kg mack hanging of his gun again!. so we start diving hard again and berelying lots with two new buff bream joe had shot on the pinnicle.

After about an hour and ill I had seen was a 7-8 bronzie, a 3-4 bronzie, a wobby on the bottom in 30 and then some little baldys and buff bream etc i head back to the boat to meet up with adam and steve who had also given up already. we look out for joe and hes of to the side. and then nick and michael come back onto the boat aswell. joe finnaly decided to joing us, with another 10kg mack! so end result was 4 macks, a queenie, a big skippy, and 8 crays. great day toped of with the big bronzie that was very tame and always fun to see when they are that calm.

back to the ramp by 3 just before the wind picked up and home by 6 with some spanish mack in the oven :D

Pictures of adams 24kg mack ill put up soon once i get it. :)

Shallow Water Surprises

Just one of those days. You know those days where you get the biggest highs and lows at the same time?? Well that was exactly how it was today. After getting all the gear ready this morning and having breakfast we left for H2O, only to encounter a problem before we had even moved out the drive way!! Dad had forgotten to clamp the tow bar over the tow ball!! The Trailer had come off and snapped off both the lighting cables and brakes :( After some quick fixes which set us back a while, we were back on track and off to our destination!!

After a 20 minute drive and a few risky manoeuvres for our newly "modified" trailer we pulled up to the Boat ramp, greeted by a fresh Easterly that filled our noses with the sea air. Its pungent smell was getting us excited!! We hurriedly pushed the boat off and smacked the motor against a pylon which caused a cracked plastic cover :( after we checked that out we bit the bullet of bad luck headed out there. We headed out, not expecting much as our "bad luck" usually has a snow-ball effect. We chucked the burley in and started setting ourselves up. You could see the Burley getting demolished by Skippy. Dad sneakily chucked a line over while i wasn't looking and got 3 in quick succession. I put my gear on, checked the camera and dived in. Beautiful clear waters filled my body, instantly sucking any breath i had out of me. I recovered quickly and started snooping around while Dad was still getting ready. I found a nice patch of sand and spotted a KG sucking up the sand and slowly mooching around. I wasn't sure wether he was sized so i just stuck to filming him. He had no interest in me what so ever so filming was pretty much canned straight away. Dad was still getting ready so i headed north of the boat into some more sandy ground and spotted a few undersize Dhuies which were really inquisitive. As i was coming up from a dive, i turned to see a good size KG just sitting there. I surfaced and kept an eye on him as he slowly headed towards a reef with a big hole in the middle of it. As i slowly studied its sleek body going backwards and forwards through this reef i finally took my opportunity and dived down. He came out of his hole, keeping his distance but still watching me intently. He came directly underneath me and sat on the bottom. I went to the right to get a better angle on him. He swum in the opposite direction in which i hoped for. He swam over to a boulder and turned broadside presenting a good shot at him. The shaft was launched free and plunged into the slippery skin of the Whiting. I quickly focused the camera on him as he struggled on the bottom. I was s excited, finally getting my first KGW!!!! I pulled him up and launched out of the water yelling to Dad about my fish while he was still in the boat!!! I swam over like a Hovercraft hydroplaning on the surface. We took a few happy snaps of the fish and then measured and chucked him in the icebox. He went 47cm and about 700-800grams.
Back in the water with Dad and we started looking around the place for some fishys. I spotted a Dhuie and started filming him, only to see dad dive down and plug him just as i had surfaced. The fish bolted under some ledges and went berserk. I filmed dad as he dived back down to secure his fish. Two awesome eating fish in the esky!!
We pushed on and headed back to where i had shot my KG to see if he had any mates. I kept chasing some of the Skippy but they kept their distance.  I pushed through all the territory i had looked at before and headed North to some more broken bottom. Just as i surface i can hear dad screaming like a lunatic, as he usually does :D I swam over and seen he had a nice Blue-Spot Flathead on the end of his spear. He spoke of another one down there so i dove down with my eyeballs searching like sensors. I looked and looked but couldn't find the dam thing!! It wasn't until dad shown me where he had seen it take off that i found it, tucked right under a rock. I got super close ensuring a brain shot. Dad filmed the whole thing for me which i was pretty happy about!! We had some awesome fish under our belt and with the wind picking up from the East we packed it in upped the Anchor. We took a couple of pics before we took off.
Later on that day i managed to break dads Cray loop and stuffed something else up i think :D We still had some luck left, Dad got $2000 on a lucky horse at the TAB and gave me $50 :D Lots of highs and lows today, but as usual the benefits of Spearing far out weigh the problems we faced, sort of ;) I hope you guys enjoyed reading my report, thanks for having a look!! A video of todays trip can be seeen here-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWz0apJ_wVM
Cheers, Callum.
