New to this spearo stuff

Hi Guys based in Kingsley and new to this.

Its amazing what u'll try when you get old. My son has taken up spearfishing and my daughter scuba-diving, so I have to follow suit.

Being 50 i think i may be biting off more than I can chew.

Anyway figure I'll buy a reasonablly good gun so that I won't have to upgrade and it should be easier to move if I need to sell it. I can get hold of 2 brand new Rob allen Tuna (110 or 120) guns for about AUD 330-00 each (my mate is coming down for a holiday and will be bringing them with him).

So couple of questions:

Is this a good all round gun? I know it is probably not ideal but I was aiming for something that will be good for Reefs as well as a "open water" gun for later use? if I ever progress that far. The 2nd one would be a backup gun.

Is it worth while getting a carbon rail or will this Aluminun one do.

Are there any problems with it?

Are there any advantages to a wooden gun, they sell some in Indo, a Ulusub ??!!!

Any comments/ suggestions would be great

Thanx

Anyway back home in a month (FIFO) and I am going to start collecting the gear.

RA Tuna 110 or 120 are about perfect for what you want and I see no reason to upgrade in the future.

Carbon barrels are a waste of money in my opinion, especially for WA diving. I have seen a number of RA carbon barrels snap, I think there were 3 go at the nationals in Queensland a couple of years ago.

I second the Tuna for $330 ???  WOW...

They are a great all round gun..  Although I think you should buy my spare freedivers and leave me to buy the Tuna!!!

Personally Id go with the 1.1m ...   small enough  for the reef stuff, and yet good enough for some larger stuff...

Eventually if you wanted a another gun... keep the 1.1 and then get a 1.3..

Clubs

PS You should head along to a club meeting some time to meet up with some other spearos, either the Bluewater freedivers or WA Undersea Club have a meeting once a month . Both are happy to have visitors at meetings.

rob allen tunas are nice

rob allen tunas are nice gun.  a 1.2 or 1.3 is the optimum gun for all around use. and yeah man those woodies are sick guns!! but only problem is they are hard to set up after each shot if u have a breakaway. and also at the same time they are a bit of an overkill for a begineer,
