Cheap Spierre Carbon Fins

Not really aware that any of the sponsors are doing fins, so I thought I'd post this up. That is carbon fins for $259US delivered ;)

So ..... If you had some spare cash and spare time .....

To cut a long and boring story short, I'm a bit of a sad prick at the moment.

Spearfishing trip for 2 or 3 days. 4 Blokes and a 21ft Bayliner Trophy. More gear than you'd know what to do with ( almost an All the gear, No idea thing )

Where would you head from K-Town ? Exmouth is an obvious one. Fortescue ? 40 Mile ? Geraldton ?

Really don't have any grounds outside of Karratha - been to Exmouth a couple of times south of the marina but have NFI about what the weather and tides are doing at this time of year. Wouldn't say I was successful at either of my attempts either.

Suggestions and discussion is encouraged. !!

A few pics

 Hello fellow fisher's & spearo's.

Shallow Water Surprises

Alright got back from my trip to Starvation Boat Harbour (we remained full the majority of the time with fresh seafood, yum abalone!!)  the other day and what a ripper of a trip it was!!! Although i only went freediving once, it was awesome and had such a good time!!

Dad and Dan had plans to go for a spear at Shoal Cape but that didnt work out so settled for little shore dive at Starvo. We headed out onto the 4WD tracks and blasted over the sand dunes and green shrub with haste. The Ocean was just visible over the ancient dunes and shrubs. The anticipation started growing again, previous memories came flooding back over me, as if i had already jumped into the water. I snapped back into reality as we pulled up to the spot. We loomed over the dune and gazed at our hunting grounds for the day. We started to unpack the Patrol and took our gear down to the beach. We chucked our gear on and dived in.

This was one of my first proper shore dives and was so excited!! Our targets were Flathead, Abalone, KGW, Skippy and anything that ventured in close. It was so great slipping back into the water and i was soon doing some little dives, practising my breathing and looking for ab's. We kept swimming out deeper and found some better ground. Dad stayed inshore trying to get some Ab's while me and Dan were looking for fish and Greenlip/Brownlip ab's out deeper. We kept moving around on some nice little ridges and sand holes but to no avail.

I saw a great ledge in about 4m of water and made a dive under it. The silver sides, Black stripes and dinner plate body made me think big Sweep at first, but as it took-off i realized it was in fact a Long-Snout Boarfish!!! I had never speared one of these before and my heart started pounding a million miles an hour. I knew they were around but never thought i would see one this shallow!! He took-off behind a ridge, i slowly crept along the bottom and over the ridge until i saw him. His sides were so camouflaged amongst the rocks and the black stripes created this wonderful hue through its body as the overcast weather kept it surprisingly concealed.

I took the first shot i had at it, hitting it right in the shoulder. The fish lay dormant for a few seconds but then burst out spontaneously. I grabbed him and dispatched him with my knife!! I finned across the water like a flying fish towards my brother who was stoked with my capture and the fact that we had fresh fish for dinner!! We kept diving, with me just gazing at my prize on the back of my bro's gun the majority of the time. Its terrific but weird Long snout stood out like someone in a Mankini at a funeral. I spotted probably the biggest herring in my life and spotted a smaller Boarfish for my brother a little while later. It was awesome watching him shoot it!! We headed back in to greet Dad with a bunch of Ab's. We were stoked with our catches and quickly cleaned them up for dinner and grabbed some pics.

I took this photo on the rocks while cleaning the fish as they all started to clean the fish and thought i should put it up.

TUESDAY:
2 weeks on and we were back in the water but back at my hometown of Mandurah. The weather looked to be sweet for diving so we made a few phone calls and soon we planned my last diving trip for the holidays. It was another family event this time with Dad, Dan and I heading to a little known spot out off the Cut. The gear was chucked in the boat and we took-off to the ramp and then to the wide world of Blueness. We exited the headlands and the water was superb, way exceeding my expectations!! Crystal clear, barely any wind and not a single boat out!!! Dad upped the revs and we were on our way!! Thoughts of Mackerel creeped into my mind, but i pushed them aside.

The throttle was pulled back and the anchor was let down. The weather was still superb and i quickly rushed on all my gear. I put on the GoPro and it was playing nicely today filming the whole first spot we went to. I jumped in and was greeted with Baitfish schools hugging the Boat for dear life. I swam forward to the ledge that has always got me fish. After watching a million wrasse feed on our berley i spotted a school of Skippy making their way into the berley. They were really flighty and I surfaced with gun still loaded. Dan dove down and took a ripper off a shot that extended all his cord on his 1.3, a bit over kill for Skippy but they were still fun. Dan was lucky though as his spear didnt go all the way through but he had still stunned it enough to take another shot. A ripper Skippy it was at about 40-45cm.

Dad was on the look out for crays, not being out done by looping a beauty . There was a smaller cray of about 15cm on the back of the bigger one that Dad had guillotined with the loop. Poor little guy, but he made great burley :). A Dhuie came racing out and munched the whole head down with gusto. He was small but it was so cool watching it launch it self out of a ledge and wallop the unfortunate Cray. The skippy came back after the rest of the cray and i planted a spear in one. just behind the gills, perfect!! another Skippy to add to the boat!! Without these Skippy it would have been a disaster as thats basically all we shot!!. I went and dived down under a ledge and found another cray for Dad that he looped. Dad put a fish on the board as well with another superb Skippy. The GoPro caught all of it and i was so stoked with it, for now.....then Dan found a little Vinculim and a Nannygai while i wasnt looking and brained them both.

After that everything went a bit quiet so we upped the anchor and headed in shallower for some KG action. I was still yet to get my first King George on the straight hook so was very excited about the proposition of me shooting one!! We all jumped in again to be greeted with a Dhuie and a KG. Perfect!! Dad quickly dove down and had a shot at the KG but just missed it!! Dan dived down on the Dhuie and clicked the trigger........the shaft was still in the gun. His safety was still clipped on, he realized all to late with the Dhuie taking off, never to be seen again!! If only they had of let me shoot it ;)

We kept diving and i saw a huge Breaksea that i thought was a Dhuie at first, only to disappear into nothing. The 3 best fish had disappeared. Dad jumped in the boat as he had enough (wimp) but me and Dan pushed on. I saw a huge Bait ball that went from the bottom (8m) to the surface!! Mackerel started appearing in my mind. Just as i shut out any possible way of mackerel appearing, what do you know a school of mackerel comes around!! They were Sharkies of about 8kg's and in a huge school. There was a little school of Skippy following them so i dived down, waited for them to come in and lined them up. They were so tightly packed in that i quickly aimed in on the 2 closest ones and fired hoping to get the tricky "2 birds with one stone" trick. The school split up and the Mackerel bolted. I recovered my sight and saw 2 Skippy on the one Spear, BOO-YA!! One was Dead with a shot straight through the eyes and the other was dead center in the middle!!

Dad got a couple of happy snaps and i dived back down to see Daniel with another superb Skippy. We got in the boat and looked at our catch, awesome!!
Check out the weather!!

We headed out a bit deeper because the boys wanted to do a Tank Dive to get some more crays and stuff. I stayed on the boat while they went and did their thing. Dad got another 5 crays, getting 2 crays in the same loop!! He took a "guess" at where its tail was and another ones tail was overlapping the chosen one so he looped them both by accident!!

It was time to head home now and i couldnt wait to have a look at the footage on the GoPro!! After everything was sorted i went plugged it into the TV where it deleted all the footage on there......... :O :(
I was so annoyed and so was Dad. I was still happy to go diving though, was just what i needed before school, which started today. Now i just have to get through Yr11 without thinking too much about Spearfishing ;)

cheers, Callum.

Pimp my gun

Picked up a used 1.4 gun for some FADs fun, I had some help doing the bands, so I made myself up a spare set.

I also whipped up a handy loop at the end of the gun for the shark clip, so I can pass my hand through it whenever I'm unclipping it from the floatline. Its made from ski rope which is a hollow braid and its doubled back on itself as a minmum thickness.

1) Doubled dyneema with an overhand knot.
2) The doubles with the bead added
3) The cressi insertion tool. Out of the box, this needed work. It was too sharp and it cut the dyneema, and it was a little narrow for it as well. I had to widen it, and then sand the surfaces smooth.
4) The double being pushed into the rubber with the insertion tool
5) The rubber with the doubles inserted.
6) All tied up with the constrictor knot. The silicon lube really helps here. Grip the cord between some longnose pliers, then wrap it around the tip a couple times. Next pull tight and roll the rubber towards one end and the other, it helps get it really right.
7) Trimmed and the ends burnt off.
8) Chamfered down on the linisher.
9) A little shrink wrap applied.
10) Labeled and vac-packed till I need them!
11) The loop in the braided rope with the shark clip on it.

Big thanks to dstick for the tips, bits and bobs and also Wombat from Hookah Dive for a couple more parts.

Omer spearguns

G'day all,

I am looking at buying a new speargun and I'm particularly interested in the omer spearguns. I like the half barrel groove where the shaft snuggly fits in. Has anyone ever used one and if so are they any good?

Cheers,

speargun choice

Hand spearing In Geraldton

Hi just wondering where are some good spots to go gidjing in Geraldton, I don't have a boat so are there any spots or rock groins that are a good spot?

Sambo Sensations

Hey guys, just got back from an awesome freedive, first for 2012. Its been so long since i have had a freedive and i couldn't wait till i could jump in!!! We headed to a spot Dad has been meaning to try for a while now, so we made the plans and headed out their. The water was exceptional, crystal clear and nice and warm!! Dad jumped in first and a spotted a flurry of fish species investigating our berley. I started gearing up as quick as i could and jumped in again. That feeling, the water rushing over your mask, bubbles clear and you see the deep blue. Its a feeling that many of us are familiar to but its the one that we crave, the one that brings anticipation and excitement through your whole body, especially your trigger finger
The water was fantastic with Skippy EVERYWHERE and 3 little dhuies hanging beneath them. I started doing some little dives to get back into it. I was starting to get my lungs working nicely and then i scan across and spot a decent Sambo, just cruising above the Skippy. He swims across me and i tale a shot below the dorsal fin, we both head in opposite directions. The Sambo powers down to the bottom, but i pull him back and I surface. He starts to circle and then Dad comes along and points down. There is a Dhuie sitting below the struggling Sambo. Dad dives, but doesnt shoot. The Dhu was borderline size, but there was no taking chances. I focused on my fish again and he was starting to tire. I pull him ever closer and soon i hit the shaft. I dive down grab his tail, his beautiful mottled back shakes in disagreement. I plunge my hand into his gills and take it to Dad who dispatches him with his knife ( i really need to get a knife!!) Awesome!!!! My first ever Sambo and in my top 5 goals for 2012, i was more than stoked. He went 8kg exactly and measured 90cm.
We continue diving and my breath hold is improving, i can reach 10 metres and hold bottom well now. I keep diving and not long after i spot a Queen Snapper. I didn't shoot it at first as i wasn't to sure about its size so then i surface and show Dad. He looks down, dives down and shoots "my" fish   I was pretty annoyed, as i have never speared a Queen Snapper, but this was all about to change!! Just as Dad reaches his shaft, the fish "slips" off the spear because the flopper closed on the fish somehow. I didnt care though, cause it meant that i could shoot it  He is just building up speed and i take a shot, just missing the Brain shot but still holding the fish so i can grab him and put him in the boat!! Team effort first, lol. After putting him in the boat, i decided to pull my Olympus Camera out and take a couple of vids underwater(they turned out crap  ). As i was filming, a decent Swallowtail Nannygai swims past. It missing an eye and was completely oblivious to my presence. I pick up my gun, fumbled with the Camera and by now he has seen me and turns away, dam. Well i put the camera back in the boat and focus on shooting something again. I dive down and see Dad lying on the bottom, gun extended and then BANG, he shoots a nice Breaksea Cod(yum!!). Dad turned 58 yesterday so he was pretty happy that he touched 10m and shot a fish at this depth. Next dive he has done it again and shoots a nice Swallotail. We kept diving for a little while but then packed it in and caught some Skippy on Soft Plastics.
It was an awesome days diving and never realised the true potential that Mandurah had for Spearfishing!!! I had the GoPro today, but the batterys were flat(little did i know  )
oh and by the way, which one of the underwater photos do you think i should put into the Greatshot 2012 comp??
Happy spearfishing!!
Cheers, ca11um.

9yr old spearing a Skippy

My first Sambo!

My first ever Dusky Morrowong and best Spear to date.

5.3kg taken on a Cressi Sioux 50 in 6m South of Garden Island! Only managed to bag this one as it was a perfect head shot, might be time to upgrade to a bigger gun!

Couple of trout

Its been 5 weeks since the last post on this section so thought I`d chuck this up. Couple of trout the young bloke and I nailed today, both 570mm.

Rob Allen spear gun repairs

Hi everyone,

I have a Rob Allen scorpia 1100 speargun and the locking mechanism isn't working properly. When the shaft is locked in (unloaded) and you pull the trigger the shaft should click out of the housing by about 20 odd mm. Now when I pull the trigger nothing happens and I have to use a bit of force to pull the spear out. When loaded the spear releases ok but I have noticed it isn't as accurate as it used to be. My fishing brag board at work has pics of trout with terrible tail and body shots!! LOL!

I have tried to unscrew the handle to see what is happening inside however no matter how hard I try I can't get the handle to budge. Are the RA handles held together by more than just the visible screws? I live in Karratha and the local tackle store Adventure Sports advises I should buy another handle. I don't want to do that if I can't get the faulty one off!

Perhaps I should look at buying a new gun altogether. Those Omer guns look damn fine.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

contour cam for my birthday

I was lucky enough to get a contour gps cam and 60 metre housing for my birthday last week . I`ve fitted it to my mask strap for now and tried it out on the weekend. It wasnt quite alligned properly but gives an idea of what it can do.

Tried it out again today and it was alligned pretty well, got some good above water stuff of a whale checking the boat out too . I`ll post that later I reckon.

diving help

Hey everyone...... ive been into free diving for a little while now and just been trying to extend my very short breatheholds :) have quit smoking and finally got a new gun ( creta 1300 reel gun ), im off to exmouth in two weeks and was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions for spearfishing there! preferably not too deep hahaha

Lengthening speargun rubbers???

Got a twin rubber speargun I've been thinking of slightly
Modifying, I can just get the first rubber set but the second rubber is a constant struggle to get on so have been thinking of lengthening it by about an inch.
How much difference to the spear velocity do you think this would make? Basically it's no good now either I gotta take steroids to load it or modify the thing or sell and buy something more manageable.

what makes a good spear gun....

Hey....

Just thought I would gather a few local oppinions on what makes a good gun. 6 months ago I bought a Rob Allen Sparid 1100 and I am a little dissapointed with it so I am thinking of buying a new gun and was after a little help...

I have been spearing now for about 6 months although I only get out a few times a month... In late summer / autum I would head out to Rotto and dive and spear the 20m mark with some large bommies and ledges the 1100 gun seems to be ok but I was thinking the next should be 1200 minimum... with all the bad boating conditions I have been going off point perron a fair bit latley and trying to free dive but the last 2 times I was out the gun would release the spear with out warning... I thought it could have been the standard mono shoooting line not letting the spear + firing mechanism engage properly so after a few scary moments I gave up for the day and replaced the shooting line for dyneema cord which on the next day out seemed to work fine but after 2 hours in the water it happened again 4 times so I took it back to the shop I bought it from and the guys there have kindly sent it away for me to be looked at.

A few of my diss likes with my gun are that I tryed to open the handle and see what was wrong with my gun but it is sealed and not servicable... I don't really like the closed muzzle of the sparid (although I haven't used an open muzzle for a comparrison yet) I thought it makes it harder to aim acuratley and a pain for loading, the mono shooting line kinks very easily, I was also supprised that you have to drill and screw a reel on to the rob allen rather than a clip on no drill type.

some of the things I do like about it are that it has a good balance and the boyancy seems just right, the spear is tough and shows no sign of rust or wear that I have seen on others, I also like that it came with a good heavy shark clip on the handle rather than just a hole to tie the rope to.

Like I say I want to buy another gun so I would like to know what you particularly like or don't like about your guns and what I should be looking for when choosing a new gun...I don't want to pay more than 400 - 500 for it so a middle of the range gun is prefered.

Thanks - Winta

Freedivers - Sambas and Blackouts

Hey Guys,

Great video on Sambas and Blackouts, what causes them, what to do, what are the tell tale signs.  Video is about 35 minutes, but if you are serious about it, then it pays to know this stuff.

Float boat.

Has anyone got one of these or seen anything like it available locally?
