Omer spearguns

G'day all,

I am looking at buying a new speargun and I'm particularly interested in the omer spearguns. I like the half barrel groove where the shaft snuggly fits in. Has anyone ever used one and if so are they any good?

Cheers,

Ben

Yes Till I know that, however if you look at the omer design the shaft actually sits totally inside the gun which may give the gun greater accuracy. The groove on the Omer guns are much deeper than say a rob Allen.

If you think that makes it better then maybe you better buy it!

Thing is though, if it was really better, don't you think the other brands would be copying that by now?

Not sure mate because as far as I'm aware omer are a developing name in the spearfishing industry and I haven't heard too much about their guns.

I guess you won't really know until you try it for yourself.

In your opinion what is the best rubber powered gun on the market?

Omer do good advertising.

Lots of good brands out there, Aimrite is pretty hot, most of the South African guns are good.

omer is alright, some of their guns look very nice :) but in my experince and the experince of my club, not many people use them the reason is because they are made for european diving such as diving 40m to get a 1kg snapper type things and so they aren't very powerful. id suggest a rob allen or rabbitech. aimrite are very good guns to but people keep talking them up way to much. beauchat carbons are very nice guns to, very smooth and well tested.

Mate of mine is sponsored by rabitech

Tue, 2012-01-17 21:38

Here's some of his footage he has put together.

http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=AU#/profile?user=OFFTHEBEATENTRACKPRO&v=Gxd5zbLd6vo&view=videos

He rates the gear highly, I use a rob Allen tuna gun but last dive I had issues with the safety jamming but other than that it shoots accurately.

Good to hear your opinions. I have a Rob Allen 1100 scorpia however it seems to have lost its accuracy ever since I bought a thicker rubber for it. Not sure what's happening here...It used to hit anything I pointed at!

I'll have a good look at Rabitech, rob Allen, orca and aimrite.

Cheers.

Cheers mate. I've heard about shaft whip but didn't know what it meant. I'll be replacing the rubber to its original size.

I'll check out the freedivers guns.  Thanks again!

Hi Griffo             Whilst

Fri, 2012-01-20 07:23

Hi Griffo

Whilst I have heard plenty of reccomendations about which speargun to buy and normally its the same popular must have brands Im yet to hear any evidence about why they are so good. A rail gun is a piece of alluminium or carbon tube with a rail in it, rubber band, spear and handle with a trigger mechanism in it. The way I look at it is rubber , spear and barrel (tube) are pretty much identical for all brands. So there should be no difference unless you get an inferior barrel with less wall thickness. That leaves the trigger mechanism, which in all models is primitive to say the least and mainly plastic (have a look at the Rob Allen marketing photos). So regardless of what railgun you buy I imagine it would have similar accuracy and range.

As mentioned above you have probably over powered your gun. You could have barrel flex or shaft whip. Have a look on the net theres plenty of info about it.

Im no expert, so if some one can give me a logical reason or reasons why one gun is better than the others Id at least consider agreeing.

What gun do I use. Undersea Terminator.

*rubber same as all guns

*alluminium barrel- marketed as thickest on market

*spear- shit bends like rubber replaced with higher quality 7mm

*handle and tigger mechanism- stainless trigger mech with easy access slide to inspect and clean even on boat no tools required.Unlike one of the more popular brands I am yet to hear of a safety failure or mecahnism failure.

I think the Omer will be just as good or bad as any railgun around.

the south african guns are

Fri, 2012-01-20 12:21

the south african guns are very quite underwater expsecailly the freedvivers guns. also the amount of the power the diffenrt guns can take, ( might say its the thickest doesnt mean its the strongest) then aslo the weight of the material for easier tracking, and you will find there is a accuracy differnce rabitech i have found to have the best accuracy out of rob allen, aimrite, torreli and riffe, and thats just because i have tried them all. also the handles  have differnt levels of comfrot, ease of firing and mech quality. also the rubbers make a very big differnce, for example pure black rubbers u get about 30% power out of the stretch where as black amber ( amber core) you get about 70% i use rob allen rubbers which are abmber coated with blue, they have about 75% which is about the same as the riffe rubbers which change from about 70-80%. aimrite rubbers are the only example of a pure black rubber with amount of power to its tretch. some guns like the pelaj have been known to fire random as the mech as bad quality, as i have had rob allen handles not clip the spear in for a while until u play around with it for a while. also spear type makes a big differnce, better spears have more speed, better hitting stregnth and stronger material so that they dont bend as easy, but most spear if kept razor sharp will be fine. there a lot of differnces in quality and only after using others will you notice the differnce. i use a rabitch apex carbon 13. with a rob allen reel and 2 16mm rob allen rubbers and a rob allen spear. but the rabitech spears i find are more accurate but i bet it on a huge sambo

Kane,

Just had a look at the youtube link. Bloody good footage! I would certainly be keen to get a rabitech gun. I don't dive to great depths like Andre would so I probably won't need to get a reel on the gun (I mostly dive in the 0 - 10m mark). Around 1.2m would be a good size I think.

No rush for the gun so if you can ask for me in a fortnight or so that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers mate.

if only doing shallow i would say get th reel, much easier to swim around with, and also better for going into caves and stuff, under 25m i usually use a reel gun at all times, float only in deep water, but each to their owen, some people only use floats

Check the suppliers website prior to checking adreno as ive found them cheaper most of the time.

got one

Sun, 2012-05-06 21:22

Ive got an hf 110 so far been a shit hot gun easy to aim shoots straight can be a little difficult getting the shaft back in the mech so make sure that the shaft is in the mech BEFORE YOU LOAD THE RUBBERS did this once , good way to shit yourself big time I know this is unsafe and a good reason not to buy one however I just give the shaft a decent pull to make sure the shaft has engaged in the mech and no more problems the big deal with this gun is it tracks better than my 95 cm gun and this makes a moving target easier to hit.The paint scratches easily aswell.

We have a few Omer

Sat, 2012-05-19 21:12

We have a few Omer Caymans

Hated them when I first started using them. Made a few adjustmaents like removing the metal bridals and re rigging the lines.

Accuracy is brilliant. the eliptical shape makes for easier sideways movement.

You need to make sure the spear leaves the body completley otherwise you may bend your enclosed rail. (no short short shots)

Have used robo's and to fair they are a lot simpler and less complicated for loading.
The more I use it the more I like it.
