North of Perth Beach Fishing
Submitted by aalfred on Mon, 2013-02-11 18:50Hey all,
I was planning to do a overnight land based fishing trip next weekend. I wane go north of Perth in the range of 2-3hr driving.
My question is now are there any spots I can access with a 2wd??
When I drive towards Jurien are there any spots on the new highway which lead to the beach for a normal car or do I waste my time?
Any input is much apprechiated!
Cheers
Seb

Binningup any good at the mo?
Submitted by Formerathlete on Fri, 2013-02-08 11:18Considering LB in Binningup area this weekend. Any advice on beach access, weed conditions etc would be greatly appreciated. Years ago I used to ok a couple of ks south of Binningup. Is that area worth a try these days. Looking to have a crack for tailor & sharks etc and maybe even send a baloon out in the morn. Thoughts?
Will post afterwards if there is a story to tell.
Cheers

General advice sought for weekend trip to Lucky Bay/Wagoe and Kalbarri
Submitted by Captured1 on Wed, 2013-02-06 10:24Hi all,
I am planning a trip with a couple of mates up north in a couple of weeks time ( 22nd - 24th Feb) .Looking for some advice from Lucky Bay/Wagoe and Kalbarri veterans.I have searched the forum and have picked up the odd pointer here and there, but I am guessing the more info I can get from experienced Fishos the better. We are planning on just pitching a tent where we can,and moving around to likely spots. We are intersted in the best locations for maybe a Mulla/Tailor/spaniards etc and maybe some tent pitching locations.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can offer any advice/tips on things such as 4X4 driving in this area, particular locations, tackle and anything really that is deemed as a must have or know for this trip !
Thanks

Flathead and Tides
Submitted by Z_fish on Mon, 2013-02-04 11:01Hi Fellas,
I've been crabbing before, but have never tried going for flathead (I reckon it's about time i gave it a go). Planning to head to either point walter or canning bridge. I was wondering if there was a specific time of day, or specific tides for the best flathead fishing?
I've got a rmg scorpion 52, and some soft plastic bloodworms (which I hear are perfect for flathead). Any advice you could give me on technique, locations, ect would be much appreciated. (btw, I'm land based, and south of the river)

New to Western Australia
Submitted by mosler on Wed, 2013-01-30 10:11I have been fishing for about a year or 2 and have some idea at what I am doing. However I learnt everything I knew in South Australia and have just moved to Western Australia. I decided to go out yesterday and have a fish at Two Rocks with only lures and got nothing. Thats when reality hit me. I have no clue what I should be using to catch fish here. I used metals mostly but also used some soft plastics as well. I live near Quinns Rocks so anywhere around there would be great. I have all the gear e.g. rods, reels, hooks, sinkers. I just dont know what to use, where to go and how to fish here. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Is a shock leader really necessary?
Submitted by Brickie33 on Mon, 2013-01-28 18:45Hi all, Im just asking this question as my last 2 sessions Ive encountered a fair few snags and lost some rigs. As I prefer to fish with a pulley paternoster rig off the beach most times, when I get snagged if the line breaks its generally past where my shock leader was tied on (I use 20lb mainline and 50lb monoleader as the shock leader). The problem with the rig is that its all connected as one to the shock leader, so I cant use a 'rotten bottom' on the weight side using lighter line as if that breaks the whole rig is lost, and on the hook side (say if that gets snagged) I dont really want to use any lighter line for fear of bite offs. I understand the principles and why a shock leader is used but Im just wondering what any of you guys have to say about it and whether you have any preferences (to be honest its just a pain in the arse tieing a new one on after each session!). All opinions welcome, cheers

Latest nights fishing with Sherbert
Submitted by snapper on Sun, 2013-01-27 09:42Sherbert , myself and Alan went for a fish on friday night, fish were scarce but dickheads on the beach were plentiful.
Sherbs got a nice 550 mm ze onesTailor to start off which tasted great then myself and Alan got some nice bait size ones. Sherbert got a whopper Eagle Ray then it went quiet for a while until I got my first Black Ray of the night, it was 144cm across the wings. The winds went easterly enough to get the balloons out at about 2am but it was quite for a couple of hours until all rods went off at once.
Sherbert got a Black Tip, Alan's fish spat the hooks and I got my fish to within about 70 mtrs of the beach before he realised he was hooked, first run and he headed for Rottnest taking about 3oo mtrs , thats the way it went for the next hour until I eventually got a nice size Tiger to the beach, he dropped the hooks as the boys were trying to gaff him, best result really as he swam away. If you are going to target sharks its a whole lot harder to get them back in the water, probably impossible if you are by yourself and if you are not going to eat them, why kill them.
The Black Rays went 78.3 kgs and 82.8 kgs one on the surf rod and one on a balloon.

Yanchep weed?
Submitted by Brickie33 on Thu, 2013-01-24 22:20Not a bad morning got there at 4.45, not much weed on the surface but was getting a fair few snags on the paternoster rig, ended up losing a few to that. My mate got 4 herring and a wrasse, I got 1 herring and a pretty decent (30cm from beak to tip) calamari (wasnt expecting that!). Right at the end had a good run and a 20 min battle from what felt like a pretty big ray (no head shakes, glued to the bottom etc) before I had a bite off on my 50lb mono leader and called it a day after that at just gone 9. No tailor about but a fair few oher things to keep us amused!

scaley mackeral record
Submitted by quadfisher on Mon, 2013-01-21 19:28Hi, i'm Georgia (13 years old) i'm using my dads account right now. Anyway just letting everybody know that we just went down to Coogee jetty and got our record amount of scaley's. We got 141. (we know the bag limit is 9 litres each, this was under that)
Just if anybody was wondering we freeze them in freezer bags (10 to 12 each bag) we then take them for bait for all our other fishing. We use them for tailor, salmon, mackeral, jewies basically any type of fish we go fishing for throughout the year. THEY MAKE EXCELLENT BAITS!!! and preserve on the hook far better than mulies.
Also me and my dad have been scaleying for all my life and this is our record.

Exxy 6th - 19th May
Submitted by timwalden on Mon, 2013-01-21 01:58Hi Folks,
I have booked my flights from the UK and I will be in Exxy on the above dates. Will anyone else be around them? I'll be land based fishing but am tempted by a charter day either fly fishing for bonefish or popping for GTs.
Cheers,

Number of rods allowed on beach?
Submitted by mateusz on Sat, 2013-01-19 23:25Just had a refresh read of the recreational fishing guide.
I just wanted to make sure im not breaking any rules, say i take 3 fishing rods to the beach but i am only ever using 2 at once, is that ok?
And if it isn't.... what if the bloke next to me in his 4WD has 5 different outfits in his car, but they aren't physically on the beach, is that ok?
just a thought.
cheers

hillarys north wall
Submitted by Zoggy84 on Wed, 2013-01-16 09:57Decided to head out this morning about 6.30 got to my little spot in front of the yacht club where there is a nice couple of flat rocks to stand on. Wind was howling at me waves were splattering water and weed about. Thought nope not going home, unless the weed is as bad as it looked. First cast undersized tailor. Next 3-4 pretty much same result. Enjoying it decided to keep at it, 10-15 min later small sting ray no idea what kind but swam away happily after getin the hooks out. Not long after I got myself a 40cm tailor and 43cm dart which was released. My kg mulies was very quickly depleting and on the last cast another tailor same again at 40cm. So with that I packed my gear and went home for a nice beer battered fish burger. What made the trip worth while I won my bet with the wife I wasn't gonna cone home empty handed and I was back by 7.45.

Mindarie marina eagle ray..again
Submitted by Brickie33 on Mon, 2013-01-14 18:551 small herring, 1 reasonable whiting & 2 pretty large eagle rays in as many weeks off of the rock wall near the ex-disabled viewing platform (sadly no longer with us). Herring caught on whitebait, 1 ray on a mulie, the other on the whiting used as a livie. Fished the area at all manner of times/tides for a while now, had no luck at the lagoon at yanchep & only 2 flathead at quinns dogs beach (and another eagle ray!) after god knows how many visits! Any suggestions please? Im really struggling to find any consistency at the mo, cheers guys!

Gracetown and Margaret River mouth
Submitted by sonoftherock on Sat, 2013-01-12 21:35Attached are a couple of snaps from my recent holiday... apologies for the quality of the pics, they were taken quickly on an iphone before releasing the fish back into the sea.
Both fish were taken from a couple of well developed gutters, just about a meter from the shoreline! I was just messing about on the beach, with some light gear and few prawns! There was plenty of good bread and butter fishing down south, with loads of herring, whiting and bream about.
The whiting, which I believe is a KG, was taken from Gracetown, while the other fish, I've never caught before, was taken from Margaret River mouth. I am calling it as a buffalo bream? Was quite surprised to see a KG taken so close to shore, there were plenty of small sand whiting around, so it was a surprise when this fella popped up!
