Cheynes beach next weekend

Headding to cheynes beach with the wife next weekend (finally found someone to look after the kids)

Anyone know if any salmon are around?

Finally convinced the misses to come on a fishing trip and both of us have never caught a salmon be4 and she always complains that we never catch anything so I hope our luck changes and she gets the fishing bug!!!,

Any tips or areas we should be targeting? Should I be chucking out stick baits or using mulies?

Jetty Cart

With all the fish being caught of the jetties and rock walls i thought i better get ready for some winter LB fishing. Not having any room at work to get to my boat project, the thought came to me that i'm getting too old to carry every thing down to the jetties and marinas . After seeing The Jetty Rats post I knew what my project for today would be .

I looked around and found some nice aluminium angle ,two trolley wheels,  measured my esxy and started on the bits i needed

I welded the square frame togeather and worked on the handle bracket. I was concerned it might crack over time so i reinforced the tube with some flat plate .

I added the front foot and welded in the axle supports. Again i added extra plate to make them stronger .

Then i prepared the rod holders . I welded in bars at the bottom to stop the rods sitting too far down the holders.

After alot of welding ( round tube leaves a big gap on a flat surface that needed to be filled ) and sorting out the handle . ( the handle can be removed for transport ) I was happy with the result .

Esky fits sweet and the ballance was good too

I put a simple hook on the handle for the bucket and i will probaly add a cutting board that fits into a rod holder.

I know it looks like there is no room for tackle, but i will just pile it on top of the esky . A fully stocked esky is more important , i can always carry my tackle bag if i have to .

Cheers  Grant ;;

reel advice for ugly stik

I've got a 9 foot BWS 1109 ugly stik and I'm looking to upgrade the reel.  My dad's in Japan in the moment so I'm hoping he can get me something Japanese made a bit cheaper.  I think the rod suits 17lb line but I'm not 100% sure as I'm not the original owner of the rod.  If anyone owns something similar or knows about these rods please give me some advice.  I'm looking to spend less than $200 on the reel and would prefer a spinning reel which I think the rod is made for.  Cheers fellas (and ladies as the case may be).

LB 11/05

Went up for a quick overnighter in the Leeman area. Big swells during the week had really stirred things up, as expected. Water is clearing though already looking better than yesterday.

No tailor or mulloway. Took home a small gummy - around the 5kg mark so have a nice feed. B&B fish were quiet....came in dribs and drabs.

Something interesting....filleted a herring for bait and it had 2 baby blowies in it's gut!!!

Cheers

Fishing tomorrow. Sunday 11th May

So I wouldn't say I'm getting bored but bream, whiting, and pinkies are starting to become predictable inside mindarie marina. Managed a very nice 34cm black bream last weekend with a bag full of everything else.

this weekend I want to put away my Flicky and get out the big guns off the rocks for something bigger for the table hopefully.

What is biting off mindarie rocks as we're approaching winter. It's my first winter in Australia so all new for me.

Is it 3 gang 3/0s and mullies for tailor, berley float for herring and salmon, or lures for ?

What would you guys recommend for a decent session tomorrow.

Combo advice please

 Hi guys,

I was hoping to get some advice on an upgraded combo, predominately for beach fishing.

I started fishing around feb this year and I've quickly become obsessed. I currently own a 12" daiwa pyrocon surf combo with the pyrocon 3i 5000 (cast weight 50g - 150g / 7 - 15kg mono).

I've had a bit of success catching a few tailor (42,43cm), herring, whiting, and a random shovelnose (1.2m -tasted delicious, firm and flakey with a nice scallop type flavour) and I'm dead keen to keep chasing the usual bread and butter, and tailor off the beach but would like something that's a bit smoother and physically lighter than my current combo that would also afford me the opportunity for fish a bit bigger, I.e a mulloway if I can get lucky, or big tailor. I'd also like to be able to mix and match the reel for some shore  fishing and/or take it off the rocks for something sizeable.

My knowledge is very limited at this point, but from doing some background reading I was looking into a Stradic FJ 5000 paired with a 10'6" Starlo classix surf rod. And my budget sits around this mark.

I'm also contemplating switching to braid, mainly to enure I have enough line on the spool to work with if I hook up to something big. But worried about troubles I've read about, ect.

Any and all advice you guys could offer me would be appreciated. I.e am I on the right track with rod and reel choices? Could I pair that reel up with multiple rods to meet a few purposes? Any suggestions on what I could set my old combo up for? (I'd thought a more dedicated whiting/herring combo). Basically any and all information is welcome :)

Sorry to come on here and straight up ask for info, once I learn a thing or two ill be sure to contribute :)

Surf Popper

As you all know about the large Tailor 67cm I caught on the weekend on a surf popper.

I had made a few poppers tonight. Feathers, beads and size 4 suicide.

Not bad for a first try. Hopefully this will fool them.

Happy Fishing.

67 cm Tailor from Metro Beach

Hi Guys,

Went fishing last night to my favourite beach (Burns Beach). Like I said last week. Top spot.

Anyway, fishing with a paternoster rig and a surf popper at the top.

It was about 5.30pm when bang, my 12 foot rod bent like no tomorrow. I caught this thumping 67cm Tailor. Biggest so far for me. Surprisingly, caught it on the surf popper.

Lately there has been a lot of Mullas, but this was a fluke. There has not been a Tailor in sigth at Burns Beach since March. Only Mulloway.

This is a sign to come for the winter months ahead.

Happy Fishing All.

C'mon how bad is my luck

 So this is my story,

Chasing any big fish can be a challenge, but what I have put up with I think is extreme.

Over the last 5 years I am still yet to land a big fish from shore after many successful hookups. One exception is a 2-3kg salmon from the daweswille cut on 6kg line about 2 years ago just after I broke my neck so I couldnt really fight it that well and had a big spasm on the rocks when it got to the surface. I didnt land it so it doesnt count. Today just set me off !!!!

About 5-6 years ago I started getting serious about catching a big fish from shore. My main target was mulloway in the Swan or Fremantle.

I have hooked up at Como Jetty with a snapped line after 5 minutes of extreme running (3 runs in all) on 6kg line 12Ft combo off a live trumpeter (a big one too).

I have hooked up on a big big fish at Woodmans point on a mulie 2-3 min after we saw a 20-25kg mulloway swim by. I fought it for 25min, 3 big runs, it was done on the top about 200m out after the second, the last it went around the end of the groyne and got me in the rocks below. 6kg line, 300m and it almost spooled me twice.

I have hooked onto a 2-3kg small mulloway in east fremantle but my 1-3kg gear wasnt enough. Snapped off about 5 -6 times in that session alone.

Smiths Beach down south, Huge school of 6kg salmon, My brother and my Dad both caught one but I didnt even though I spotted the school and was first to cast in (got snapped off LOL).

CSI groye, 9am, live herring on a patenoster about 20-25m out, my mates had left to get brekkie (been there since 6am) hooked up on a headshaking bastard, line snapped and brought in nothing. They got back, another live small silver bream on wire trace got smashed, I was so freaked out from the bite before that I forgot to strike. It got dropped. Reeled it back in, bite marks on both sides of the bream, mulloway for sure.

Multiple rays from Esheds and North mole (50kg best grey ray), along with many other snap offs and big runs that didnt end well from the beaches around Fremantle.

I have to say here that I have been fishing all my life and my PB bream is 42cm, Bar Tailed Flattie 82cm PB (Yeah you heard me) and have caught Giant Herring 62cm PB and sambos from the swan too (not sure on the PB as I lost my phone that time ~ 45cm).

Today I ballooned a live herring out from the north end of the dawesville cut and after 15-20 min it took off big time. I have had enough, I had 15gk braid main line and just a swiwel connected to another 1m of 15kg braid (no fluro), on a 10KG Ugly Stick 2000J stuck in the rocks. I fought this thing for about 10-15 seconds, in which it dove to the botton, broke the balloon off (4kg mono), shook the rod violently (which hurt my neck and back chronic) and then proceeded to bust up the side of the groyne with huge speed, my line must have jagged a rock cause I felt a huge weight, a couple of head shakes and then the line broke.

Am I cursed or what ????

??????????????????????????????????????????????????

When am I going to land a big LBG fish and no shit, with my luck how big is it going to be??????

Esperance and Albany landbased quadding

Might do a quick movie later as we have some great footage from our annual trip ,

down south , but for now we have posted some pics.

We went for a week , and copped some fowl weather as we expected.

Still thats never stopped us enjoying the delights of charging salmon and clean south coast

beachs.

We explored new places, caught heaps of fish, and quadded everywhere we could,

whilst watching dolphins surfing the breaks and salmon hearding baitfish in the gutters.

Spot the fish in the second pic!

Wagoe beach or kalibarri land base spots

hey guys heading up in 3 weeks just seeing if any 1 else is heading up or can put me in the right direction or any other info woukd be awsome

Preston Beach. No luck.

Went down to Preston beach on Friday with a few mates.

Wind blowing a south westerly gale which made casting difficult and then the weed too......(the weed with the little ball things on it which somehow manages to claw together 60m of braid into a massive knot).

Ended up catching a feed of whiting which we cooked over coals. BEAUTIFUL! Lots of little tarwhine around, which was fun on the really light gear, but not what we were chasing. Like previous posts, everything got smashed by pickers in the first minute.

Threw out a fillet of herring at night to see what was lurking around. Current was so strong just dragged the sinker (80g) down the beach collecting all the weed heading to Perth.

Nevertheless was a great time with good mates.

Mullas, Mullas, Mullas

Been catching heaps of Mulloway from a northern beach lately. They are all around the meter mark and are plentiful with a south westerly wind.

An awesome fish.

New 9ft rod suggestions? FWA rod cracked.

Hi all,

After some suggestions on decent 9ft rods out there after my 9ft FWA rod cracked on a salmon. It appears there not as strong as what they're hyped up to be, pretty disappointed because it casted lures like a dream!

So if people could offer some opinions on 9ft rods to be used with a 5000fj stradic running 15lb braid, used for throwing metals and hard bodies at tailor, salmon, etc, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Sam.

Social Fishing

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I am keen to meet up with people interested in some land based fishing around the Swan River. I am starting my hand with surf so people interested in that would be cool too. Squid to Jewfish I am keen. I would throw a lure in a bathtub I am always keen.

Would be awesome to have some people keen to head out. Always keen for a night fish. Always found it more productive.

Cheers

The Drain

Hello all fellow fisherman. I was wondering if anyone has fished the drain recently and would be able to share some info on how it is fishing at how it is fishing at the moment. LB Spinning Rod for Saltist 6500h?

I just grabbed a Daiwa Saltist 6500h and I'm looking to match it to a decent rod for chucking lures from northern platforms. After looking through previous threads I'm thinking the 10' Nitro Rockstar might do the job nicely.

Any thoughts on that? Any alternatives worth looking at?

Cheers

Is a rod with 7-35g cast weight enough?

Is it enough for tailor / salmon fishing off the beach and rocks and for the other odd species that come past?
