South Coast Mulloway????
Submitted by dr_nasty on Tue, 2013-07-02 09:03I moved to Denmark 2 years ago and love the fishing down here. Caught plenty of salmon, sharks, lb sambos - but I am craving another mulloway. Mulloway seem rarely caught of the beaches down here. Can anyone give a heads up on places to try - cos so many beaches look so damn fishy with reef and gutters. Wanting to catch another ocean mulloway - i have tried the usual beaches with no luck. Cheers

surf fishing at or around esperance this week
Submitted by fishermick on Mon, 2013-07-01 19:34Hi guys,
Myself and a group of work mates are going to Esperance for some fishing this week and was wondering where to go, especially if the weather gets a bit ugly,
I havent been there before and we are mainly surf fishing.
The weather forecast isnt the best , maybe there are some bays where we can fish out of the weather a bit.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks guys

Fishing this monday
Submitted by shoby on Sat, 2013-06-22 21:38Hi, I am new to Perth and learning about local fishing. This forum is great and helped me alot.
I have monday off but Looking at swell forecast and wind, I am very confused as where to go? Beaches will be full of weed (as i experienced lately) and rock groynes will be too dangerous to fish by myself?
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. I am after any fish from Tailor to mulloway.

Whiting and Bream LB spots in Perth
Submitted by sledge on Fri, 2013-06-21 14:30Hi GUys, First post on this page.
Im in Perth for a couple of weeks for work and am a deadset fishing nut all the way from NQ, I normally chase barra, Jacks, Thready's etc back home, but i genuinely love all types of fishing and species.
Now being in Perth for 2 weeks is going to kill me if i cant go fishing, so last night i went out and bought a little light spin outfit (daiwa Itchy twitchy rod with Daiwa Certate 2500 spooled with 8lb braid) with the intent of chasing some bream and whiting as i get the weekends off. I have hired a car so i am mobile.
Would anyone be willing to point me in the right direction so i can hopefully go and flick for some fish, all fish (if i get any) will be released. Im using Plastics, little Zman grubs.
I know nothing about fishing in Perth or places to start.
Cheers
Sledge.

Finally....Got my Mulla!
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2013-06-09 18:28Every fish has a story behind it. Mine started four years ago. The wife and I bought a new 4x4 and went camping for the first time up at Wedge. I had recently started fishing and on my first night there caught a reasonable mulla - probably around the 7-8kg mark. My mates all called it a fluke...and so started a mission to prove them wrong. I started fishing different moon phases and eventually settled on certain times around the New Moon. I focussed on the mid-west area, fishing anywhere between Cervantes and Dongara. Dropped a lot of fish.....It was really only a little over 12 months ago that I started to regularly get into tailor. I eventually settled on a spot in the Leeman area - the tailor were usually there and this year I have caught heaps of soapies (1-3kg). I had heard a few rumours from locals about the big ones, but never seen one landed.
I went up there last month, promising the boss lady that it would be my last trip until the weather warms up again. This weekend looked simply too good to pass up though, with light winds in the lead up to the weekend....a pretty rare thing for that stretch of coast! So I begged and grovelled...and off I went.
Conditions were perfect. A bit of swell, but no breeze and the water was relatively clear. Looked like I was going to be in for a bumper tailor session. Arriving with just enough time to setup before sundown, my first bait hit the water just as the sun kissed the sea.
I was pretty surprised, not a nibble. I perservered for a good hour or so before I got my first hit and bought in a small tailor....around the 35cm mark. Figured it was going to be a long night.
Tailor became bait....and out went a small strip bait.
Took about 30 minutes....but then there was a little bit of a knock on the rod. This turned into regular knocks...and I put it down to a nibbler. This went on for 5 minutes or so, and the knocked slowly became more regular and with a little more purpose. Something was having a chew alright. Perhaps a ray or another gummy I thought.
Took the rod out of the holder and waited....within seconds I could feel some serious weight there, while the fish wasn't running I knew it was time to set the hooks.
Straight away the drag started running. Within 10 seconds or so, I knew I was into something decent. I beached a shark that would have been around the 20kg mark a few months back at the same spot. This felt similar. Regular big heaves on the rod, with the occasional run peeling line off had me call it as another shark. It didn't cross my mind at that stage, that a shark of that size doesn't chew on a bait for 5 minutes!
15-20 minute fight, with several mini-runs, I got sight of the fish front on as it came over the drop off. All I saw was a big mouth....I had no idea what it was, and my first instinct was catfish!?
10 seconds later it was up on the beach with the swell washing around it. It was only then that I looked down and saw the magnificent silver body shining back at me. The loudest 'woohoo' you will ever hear....
Fishing solo is tough when you land a big one. With rod in hand, the fish was too big to drag up the beach. I had to roll it over to get it out of the swell zone to safety.
Rod in holder, ran back to grab the fish. Picked it up and just about dropped the thing. My son is 19kg and I pick him up every day. This thing was heavier.
A fellow camper (Paul) from up the beach came over for a couple of happy snaps. I enjoyed a 30 second cuddle with my prize then got it back in the water. Didn't take long....a few seconds later, a big kick of that broad paddle tail...and off she swam to make more dream fish for the next generation.
Sorry about the picture quality, I don't usually take pictures.....but had to do something for the doubters (and for bragging rights of course...)
Have no idea of it's length or weight. At a guess....maybe 20kg...could be more. You be the judge?
EDIT: Forgot to mention, bought home one decent tailor @ 47cm for the Mrs. They were really off the bite though with only a handful of choppers caught (released). No B&B fish at all...

New to WA in need of advice
Submitted by wack88 on Fri, 2013-06-07 18:39Hi
I've just moved to Perth from Ireland, I was wondering if anyone can suggest somewhere I can catch some decent sized fish from land.
I've been out to Fremantle a few times and fished the North Mole but haven't caught anything decent out that way, it didn't look like anyone was having much luck other then a few small herring.
I'm looking for a spot within a 2-hour drive of Perth or maybe a bit further if it's a really good spot.
Looking forward to and would really appreciate any advice or any stories you can share.
Cheers

Fake Fish!
Submitted by seakidd on Tue, 2013-06-04 03:24Gday people of Fishwrecked!
Heading up to Sharkbay, Coral Bay and Exmouth at the end of june with a girlfiend from Austria for 3 weeks, I was planning on a lot of fishing and this time not using so much bait. My question to all you pros out there are wich soft plastics and minnows work a treat in said locations. Main species ill be targeting are Spangos, Black Snapper, Queenies, GTS and Jacks. Also any of you guys know a great spot for a feed of muddies??? Any help would be appreciated. Have used the search button but didnt get a huge amount of information. Ill be sure to post many pictures of the catch and maybe a sneaky picture or two of my sexy Austrian friend in her bikini if theres a decent reply.

What the hell is it with Braid??
Submitted by harry-jnr on Sun, 2013-06-02 17:16Hi everyone,
I've just got back into fishing and have being going quite regularly for the last 3 weeks. I bought a Penn Spinfisher 750SSM and loaded it with 30lb braid and attached to a 50lb shock leader. The shop spooled it and attached the leader. The bloke used a double uni knot to attached the braid to the mono and I have no complaints about the knot strength, worked a treat. This was the recommendation from many people I asked and from info I gathered on the net. The rod I have for now is a Penn Big Game 11ft rod that was given to me for free, very happy with that. I think its a 12 - 15kg rod, I'd have to check. I mainly want to go for Tailor and Mulloway.
For the last 3 weeks I have been just been using size 5 gang hooks with mullies (sometimes a sinker if its windy so I can cast out further) and a trying a 3oz plug lure that I'm learning to use. It has been the most painful experience to date fishing with braid. Yes this is my 1st time using braid. Everybody I spoke to said Braid is the way to go but I have had nothing but trouble. The only person who said stay away from braid was a work mate who is a rod builder. To be honest I wasn't 100% sure about braid but thought, hey everyone's using so it must good?
I've just had tangle after tangle with this stuff. Probably getting 3-4 cast trouble free. When I cast out I made sure the line is not too loose before closing the bail and that it is around the spool and also reeled in with some tension. I look after my gear and always wash it down with fresh water and wipe down the rod/reel. The 2 things that have been happening are;
- Sometimes when I cast it goes out say 100m, lands and then this massive tangle is created about 1m after the tip or the rod. Its like a clump of braid mangled together, I haven't seen this before.
- The other thing is when I cast, it will tangle mid flight and then just slam into water. Crazy stuff.
I've been very lucky that the knots are very strong and I haven't lost anything during a cast. Lost plenty so far as I was casting too close to the reef, that's just part of the process I guess. I've been able to untangle all the knots until last nights fish off Ocean Reef rocks. Best way to explain what the tangle looked like is to picture unspooling about 20m of braid, rolling it in your hands and then just throwing it! Similar to a cat playing with a ball of wool haha. As annoying as it is I always enjoy a fishing session. Always fun!!
Sorry for the long forum topic but I thought I better put this out there on fish wrecked and hear what others have to say. Im open to feedback and constructive criticism before I get it re-spooled with mono. Maybe its too much for a newbie??

1st Multiplier reel line advice
Submitted by Fletch72 on Thu, 2013-05-30 05:31Can someone please give me a pointer here, I will be fishing the beaches around Perth. I have just bought my 1st multiplier reel and I need to know whats the best line to put on.
I have some cheep 20lb braid, some cheep 12,15 & 20lb mono. I thought id use the cheepo stuff before spending more on better line as I do expect a few birds nests.
The reel is a Diawa 7HT millionaire, I havnt bought a rod to go with it yet but I was looking at some 19ft Shakespear rods on Ebay for £45 (Im still in the Uk until mids July).
So what line & rods would you recomend, do I need to go as large as a 19ft or is that overkill.
