Dirt Hartog ferry rant
Submitted by fisherking on Mon, 2013-03-18 10:07My self & a few mates were looking at going to DHI next year until we just found out the return ferry prices.
WTF?? How the hell do they warrant charging $687 return for a fourby & the same for a trailer?
Thats $1374 before any camping fees.
Is it really THAT good??

Mulloway questions
Submitted by Skippydogg on Wed, 2013-03-13 17:37Hey all,
I dont post much as most of the things i want to say or know are always up in no time, but i have a few questions now.
So I decided to change up my persistant metro Mulloway (ocean only) chase with a daytime session at the sth side of the narrows today. 90 minutes each side of the high tide. Used tailor caught last night, frozen scalies and dart for bait. Not a sniff other than the local cleaners cleaning my hooks for me. This didnt surprise me but i thoguht i would start giving the daytime and the river a tilt.
Question 1: Has anyone heard of people landing them at the narrows on the high tide during the day? Ill keep trying but it would be nice to know.
Over the past six months i have really cranked up the chase. Been averaging between 2 - 3 sessions a week. Generally fishing the high tide in the late afternoons and evenings, or the mornings, looking for gutters or fishing rock walls. Again, fresh / live bait, snelled 8 hooks on 60lb leader on to 30lb main, running sinker as light as needed to hold my gear where i want it. Ive done ok with feeds and fun - maybe 8 decent runs - no hook up (maybe not even mulla) a few decent tailor here and there, shovelnoses, small sharks etc during the period and loved every session but i think i need some more assistance on narrowing my odds with the Mulloway. I have been fishing most of my life, and learnt what i know (very little) through trial and error (more persistant error than trial), books and the net, but I have now finally come to the conclusion that I need to learn more from someone in person who knows what the feck they are doing.
Question 2: Does anyone need / want a LB Mulloway chasing student / buddy? - if so, help us out!!! I know that loose lips sink ships, I have a deep respect for the ecosystem and I just straight up love how challenging it is to catch them but am basically going insane doing it. I have a 4wd and have it on the beach every couple of weekends so im happy to drive or tag along!
NB. Begging didnt actually feel as bad as i thought it would.
Question 3: Tides. I know having a line in the water is the start and there has to be some kind of structure or reason for the mulla to be there yada yada but in terms of tides and days, and not taking into account whether the tide falls in darkness or light or the weather, in your opinon which days and tides are they more actively feeding - Days like today where there is 4 tides with very little height difference / days with four tides but the middle two tides are basically the same and occur within an hour or two of each other / days with two major tides with more substantial height difference?
Question 4: I dont take the major and minor solunar into account when planning my fishing sessions for Mulloway, just the tides. I tested this out many times years ago and failed as usual. Had anyone had success in using these periods to target Mulloway?
Sorry about the long post and basic questions but better out than in. Thanks in advance.

Stingray on a Baloon again
Submitted by snapper on Mon, 2013-03-11 09:20.Fishing on saturday night was pretty miserable with very little on the chew except herring and the odd tailor ,about 2.30 am sunday morning the winds started to swing around to the east so I rigged up a sanmar with a nice richter skirt around it and sent it out hoping for a mackie.
Sanmar are a smaller bait to put out on a balloon so after about 40 minutes I started to bring it back in to check that the pickers had not got to it. I had weight on it straight away but with no head shake or runs I thought I might have picked up one of the other balloon lines or weed but then it gave the first run
It was nothing special it only took about 20 mtrs of line.I got that back and continued to bring the fish in. The next 2.5 hours were the same with small runs and taking line very slowly whenever it wanted. The suggestions were coming fast and quick that I had a small whale, boat , cray lines or a massive chunk of weeed. I thought I had picked up a big lazy groper but I eventually got a big black ray it to the beach.
It measured 170cm across the wings and went an estimated 161.7 kg or around 356lb . It was a good fish to get in a competition and it gave me first place but my arms and legs are aching today.
Cheers Vince
Gear used Shimano Talica 25 2 speed

tackle
Submitted by irish johnmc on Sun, 2013-03-10 10:42hey everyone
I'm new to perth and would like to take up fishing here. Back home I was a pike angler(20 years) fishing freshwater venues only. I've never fished in the sea before. So before i start i need to be steered in the right direction as far as tackle goes. rod, reel, line, traces, leeders, hooks. I'll be fishing from the shore somewhere near perth and I'M undecided what to be fishing for. HOPEFULLY SOMETHING BIG!! as afar as money goes I'd like not to break the bank just yet. but at the same time i'm not looking for a fishing combo from big W
thanks in advance for your comments

flathead
Submitted by lachieH on Fri, 2013-03-08 19:12hey guys. been looking at paper and apparently huge flathead being caught at canning bridge. got kayaks so doesnt have to be shore angling but mum wouldnt want to wait in the car and would rather be in tha action aswell! I would probably be able to go out on my own anyway.
but the point of this is to work out how to catch and clean flathead. I need to know how to fillet or get the actual meat (you know what I mean) and the rigs and if lures how do i work them?

Port Gregory/Horrocks Easter trip surf rod advice
Submitted by lambshank on Fri, 2013-03-08 10:45Hi guys
Myself and some friends are heading up to Port Gregory for a week at Easter and lucky to have the use of a free holiday house.
I was last fishing up that way about 8 years ago and got some good advice on where to fish however the memory is a bit vague.
Firstly i ahve a 12ft Snyder Glass but want to upgrade to a graphite surf rod and looking for suggestions and rough cost and recommendations?
Also can anyone refresh my memory on fishing spots, have 4WD so travelling on the beach is no problem.
Any advice appreciated!
Cheers

O/H reel - Penn Squall Lever Drag
Submitted by TonyT on Tue, 2013-03-05 17:28hey folks,
Just wondering if anyone has one of these Penn squall lever drags? its the 60ld but in left hand which draws me to it as i like reeling in with my leftie,
have a torium30 at the moment , but needs respooling.
i sort of generalise my gear as i dont fish often enough to buy set combo's for balooning etc, but was wondering how much 50lb braid anyone has loaded on to the reel if they have one.
If i can get 600m on i would be happy.
this is the spec for the reel ....
id use it for casting/slide baiting or if the wind is right balooning, just cant justify buying different reels for each different type of fishing as i dont fish often enough.
60LD Left Hand 50lb/370yds 4.3-1 15kg
but i assume thats for mono?

cheers for any input
oh and it would be matched to a catana
cheers tony

Overhead Reels for the Beach.
Submitted by Sarge' on Sun, 2013-03-03 21:39Hi guys,
I'm a very enthusiastic and fairly new user of overhead reels for beach fishing. They are the only reel with comparable overall smoothness to an Alvey (in that the line comes in straight and comes off straight).
I Currently use a Fin Nor OFC 20h offshore which ive done a bit of work on to make it more casting friendly and smoothen out the drag.
My question is this. Do you know of or use an overhead reel suitable for the beach, with Jewies salmon and other larger beach species up to small sharks? Id love to know of other strong reels which either out of the box or with a bit of work stand out as good choices for the beach. Please bearing in mind that tournament casting tackle such as a millionaire 7ht is not suitable. Nor do I want this to become another discussion littered with typical Abu 7000,10000 or penn 525 mag comments. Sure they cast but they dont have the kind of balls im looking for in a surf reel and im trying to find out what fisherman in Aus are using.
Cheers,
Sarge.

Anyone used Salmon as livebait?
Submitted by paulsmez on Sun, 2013-03-03 15:24I'd like to give it a go from the beach for sharks this Salmon season. I've heard of people doing it and I can work out how to set the hooks up but I was wondering what the story is with a sinker. I would have thought a Salmon is strong enough to pull anything short of a brick wherever it wants to go. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Smez

whiting on lures at east freo?
Submitted by clayc54 on Tue, 2013-02-26 05:43Hi
this is my first forum post. Im a novice angler, reading heaps and not getting out fishing enough!
just wondering if anyone has had any luck with whiting on poppers or walking the dog lures around east freo near the red herring up to zephyrs?
Ive been down to east freo a few times early in the morning 5-8am - to try and catch whiting with no luck. im not using bait and Im mainly using 50mm poppers and 80mm walking the dog type stickbaits. realised that ive been trying to catch whiting on the flats in low tide, supposedly not a good idea!
been reading a bit more and some people say the falling tide is supposed to be better for whiting but theres not much falling tide in the mornings around freo unless you want to be up at 2am :)
thinking of trying a falling tide around sunset or around the afternoon but wondering if im wasting my time with the lures at this spot?
any advice appreciated

I am 14 and my mum is the only one in our family who has caught a legal size one at 45cm and we love tailor the only way my sister is happy after a fishing trip. Thnx and just saying this site is very useful and there are some really nice people.

Sunset or rising tide
Submitted by Mattb123 on Sat, 2013-02-16 10:30So on a day like today with high tide about 2pm is it just a case that you fish at sunset and beyond and just accept tide is not "ideal", ignore the tide, or is it worth a flick 10-2? Tailor I guess? Traditionally I'd just hit the sunset.

Rod/Reel advice for DHI trip
Submitted by Buzzer on Fri, 2013-02-15 10:39Hi all
Taking the family to DHI for a camping/fishing trip in May. Was looking for some advice on what type of rod & reel combo's to be taking up. Fairly well equipped with lighter gear but will need to be buying all new medium to heavy gear.
Have young kids so the bulk of the time we'll be fishing the east side, but I wouldnt mind having a go off the western side myself on a few occasions.
Any and all advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
