Stingray on a Baloon again

.Fishing on saturday night was pretty miserable with very little on the chew except herring and the odd tailor ,about 2.30 am sunday morning the winds started to swing around to the east so I rigged up a sanmar with a nice richter skirt around it and sent it out hoping for a mackie.

Sanmar are a smaller bait to put out on a balloon so after about 40 minutes I started to bring it back in to check that the pickers had not got to  it. I had weight on it straight away but with no head shake or runs I thought I might have picked up one of the other balloon lines or weed but then it gave the first run

It was nothing special it only took about 20 mtrs of line.I got that back and continued to bring the fish in. The next 2.5 hours were the same with small runs and taking line very slowly whenever it wanted. The suggestions were coming fast and quick that I had a small whale, boat , cray lines or a massive chunk of weeed. I thought I had picked up a big lazy groper  but I eventually got a big black ray it to the beach.

It measured 170cm across the wings and went an estimated 161.7 kg  or around 356lb . It was a good fish to get in a competition and it gave me first place  but my arms and legs are aching today.

Cheers Vince

weighing Fish

Mon, 2013-03-11 21:16

Our club has a measurement to weight guide in excel format ,where we enter the width and it gives us a weight for the fish , as far as I am aware it is a South African system which covers a lot of the fish caught  in WA. It sure beats sticking a knife in their head , weighing them and dumping them back in  the sea dead or dying.

I think its a great system to use as I have fished in competitions for years overseas and saw lots of fish going to waste after the  weigh ins.

Back breaker .. sort of blows

Back breaker .. sort of blows the theory that a ray won't take a bait mid water . Well done on the win you deserve it .

beast alright - would have been hard work

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Good work mate. I have also

Good work mate. I have also felt the discomfort of a 2.5 hour battle with a big black car bonnet whilst balloning for sharks. I thougt the whole idea of ballooning was to avoid the bastards..Or so i thought!

It was too big, fat and lazy to even give me a good run let alone jump out of the water.
