salmon fishing today
Submitted by Feral on Tue, 2010-03-30 15:54having the day off today i decided to go for a drive around the cape and look for a few salmon just to let you perth lads know if they was around ... i stopped at wyadup today at 11pm to see a large school at mitchells rock . i waited for about 30 minutes for it to finanlly head my way before i moved down the beach at it for a few casts. after i got close the silly school turned around and headed back away, so i walked with them back to mitchells while getting one fish.
all the crew from that car park then came down so i left to walk back to my car as the fish had stopped biting and had gone deep. on the way back to the car i found another small school of large salmon right in the shallows and a prime spot for the little rod i was using. i managed 2 fish from this school before i lost them in the swell.
so back to the car and a drive to mitchells carpark saw the main school back near the beach so i waited for the school to head left and for people to get bored of them sitting deep. after about 30 minutes the school moved so i jogged down and picked up another 2 fish in quik time..
was a great 3 hours of fishing with 5 caught and only dropping 1 . using the short rod made it more interesting but i was a little lazy this morning to gear up the big rods.
sorry about the pictures as i was by myself.

Leeman LB 12-13 March 2010
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2010-03-14 19:10Hi all,
Made it up to Leeman on Friday arvo excited about the prospect of spending my 30th fishing! After finding our accommodation and settling in, I had time to shoot out for an evening fish at a spot called 'Taylor Bay' just north of Leeman. It looked extremely fishy on arrival, 2-3m cliffs surround the bay and at the right time I reckon it would produce some monster fish. Unfortunately, Friday was not the right time! I had a couple of early nibbles from reef fish but all went pretty quiet after that. Packed it in early and decided to head down to the jetty at dawn.
Arrived at the jetty while still dark and baitcasted a mulie for a half an hour or so. No hits so I switched to the little rod (with 4lb fireline & tiny Jarvis Walker reel) - flicking out small pieces of mulie with no weight I got into a couple of herring first and then some of the Skippy turned on the action! Managed to get three on the jetty and was stoked. On light tackle they put on an exceptional show and I was lucky to get them out of the water. After that plenty of juvy pinks, blowies and baitless hooks so I packed it in.
Went to 'Spot X' mid-arvo with a promise from a local that I would catch tailor. Got a few herring and a snook in the arvo session before sundown despite conditions being average for a bread & butter fish. Also plenty of juvy pinks and of course sand whiting around. Walked down to my spot a bit before dusk and burleyed the place up including a bit of tuna oil which I often use.
Started baitcasting and like clockwork when the sun touched the water I was in to what felt like a good fish. Bugger spat the hooks a few metres from the rocks though. Missed a few hits and then landed a small chopper around 35cm - as it was only my third ever landed he became supper.
Good job I kept it too. By the time I was ready to cast again a shark was cruising around at my feet - I estimate about 1.5 - 1.8m and it looked very solid - big thick body and clearly a mature shark. Dropped my mulie on it's head in the shallow water but no response so went back to the tailor. Five minutes later - I'm in. This felt like a better fish. After a few seconds I realised I was into noah and going to lose my tackle. Played him for a few minutes, or should I say he played me. He swam back towards me and then a couple of metres from where I was standing on the rocks, gracefully turned and took off for the depths, never to be seen again, with my mulie, trace and a nice new set of Gaimakatsu 4/0 Gangsters!
I decided to setup the big rod a few metres further back up the beach. It was a reluctant choice to leave a spot that I knew was firing - but the car was below the high tide line, it was dark outside and I was on the rocks...just wanted to get back in my comfort zone as I was in unfamiliar territory.
Dumped the rest of my tuna oil and willed noah to come back and play on the big rod. Sure enough, about 45m later something found my bait....and ran.....and ran....by the way it was running (going harder, slowing, then going hard again) I was pretty certain it was a shark again (the rays will usually stop for a rest and a chew). Let it run for about a minute or so and when there was no sign of it slowing I started to tighten the drag and put the pain on but there was no stopping it. 120lb braid and 130lb trace....PING....all over.
I had another run and lost more tackle - probably to the same monster and decided to pack up and head back before the night got too expensive.
So the elusive big one gets away...again...but I will be returning to Spot X (without the TUNA OIL!) to get back into those tailor now I know where they hide!
A great 30th birthday, with Skippy for lunch, Tailor for tea and a few herring for later. Also a snook so plenty of variety and positives to make the day special. Nothing can beat going home early to the wife though and a couple of extra hours sleep at the end of a long day!
Picked up plenty of local knowledge for the next trip and can't get wait for the next getaway!

Leeman LB
Submitted by buschy on Tue, 2010-03-09 19:09Well, Peaceful Bay is out this weekend and we are heading up to Leeman for a couple a nights.
Just wondering what to expect. I'll no doubt be baitcasting for tailor, then put out a fresh bait at night for something bigger. Are there any good surf beaches around - or is it all pretty much reef? Skippy on low tide?
Any advice appreciated!
Cheers,
Rob

rays everywhere Fri 5/3/10
Submitted by cuthbad on Mon, 2010-03-08 17:36Down at my local on Friday night I started I off trying for tailor, with a solid bite and a bit of weight I thought i was in luck but ended up landing the smallest ray ive ever seen. Less than a foot across. Was pretty funny and i copped a few jokes about rays being the only thing i can catch. We swapped to bigger baits, mainly fresh tuna and the rays got bigger. No monsters but enough to stretch the arms a bit, though one unstoppable busted off on reef. Between four of us 5 rays were landed and one port jackson. No real sharks, but was great fun anyway!!
Still waiting for some other pics from mates but ill chuck up a couple.
went back the next night and was one port jackson after another. Makes me realise how much fun rays are. I know how much alot of people hate them, but man its fun trying to land some of them. I almost dont mind losing rigs to the unstoppable ones, cuz its such good value trying lol

Peaceful Bay LB
Submitted by buschy on Mon, 2010-03-01 19:54Hey folks,
Going to be heading down that way on the 12th / 13th March for a weekend. Just a quick break.
Had a bit of a read of previous posts on the area - seems to be a bit of info but lots of off-shore. Any LB advice? I'll probably have a fish at Conspicuous to see if any Salmon are on the go - but I'd really like to target flathead / bream on light tackle while I am down that way.
Cheers,
Rob

Any Ideas would be helpful
Submitted by liza_scanlin on Mon, 2010-03-01 16:07Hi Everyone,
We live in windy old Geraldton and are running out of ideas about where to fish up here. Only been up here 7 months. We have a 4wd but no boat. So if any one knows any good spots this time of year that can be accessed with a 4wd, we would be really grateful.
cheers

Mono line for Abu 7000?
Submitted by JakeB on Sun, 2010-02-14 21:10I fish from the breakwalls, jetties and beaches for mulloway with an Abu 7000 and custom built fsu 5120( among other outfits) and am wondering peoples opinions on wich brand of line they prefer for fishing with overheads from the shore. In the past i have used penn 10x, platypus platnium and super 100 and berkley trilene big game. All the lines have worked well, just chasing others opinions and experiences... i usually dont fish with over 10kg or 15kg mainline. any feedback would be great. cheers.
