Irishman Lost BUT Happy in WA ;)
Submitted by Liamo on Thu, 2009-04-09 21:23Hi lads,
I posted here a few weeks ago in another thread but wanted to start a dedicated one instead. I've come from Ireland to fish the west coast of Oz and I need some help and advice! This place is bluddy huge!!!
I only have 2WD access but I am looking for any advice/tips on places where I can catch a few fish from the beach and rocks. I fish catch and release only and will only be in any one place for a few days at most and would appreciate advice on good marks where I can catch anything! PM me if you prefer, I will take any hotspots/info to the grave. I know how it is... I wouldn't tell anyone anything at home ;-)
I know you guys over here don't rate shark/ray fishing but I love it - god if we only had fishing like this at home! So good beaches for mulloway or bronzies etc. would be fantastic. I love rock fishing too and if there are rock ledges close to the water all the better. Not interested in gaffing fish, have a big net and want to return them if at all possible.
I'm up at Kalbarri right now and have been messing around with wobbegongs (uggggly) from Bluff Beach plus plenty of chopper tailor and small mulloway from Chinamans Rock. Lost a good fish there the other night fishing a whole sand whiting. Also looking for marks up along the coast in Shark Bay - went up for a look and had some small black tips from Goulet Bluff but got busted by much bigger fish. Came back down to get some bigger gear at Geraldton so after Kalbarri will try Shark Bay again!
Could you also recommend the best species I can catch for bait? Most of the mulies I get are mush just wondering what species I can catch that will make good cut baits?
Can I just say the fishing out here in comparison to home is out of this world, if you could only see what the waters of Northern Europe are like, look after it you guys are truly blessed. I have never seen anything like it.
Cheers,
Liam

Submitted by H.S. Chan on Tue, 2009-04-07 16:35Hey everyone, just wondering what else apart from eagle rays and those black rays i could score from rocks and beachs. Basically chasing info on anything that i could get a good fight from. Want to go chasing this weekend along with some F.W. boys.
Also wanna try out my new 24kg broom and the banax SI 7000DX spooled with some 50lb tournememt braid.
Info will be very much appriciated.

Exmouth landbased - when is the best time of year ???
Submitted by Dasho on Mon, 2009-03-23 15:32Hi folks.
We went to exxy last October from the 5th to the 11th for some landbased fishing, and the results were a little dissapointing.
No reports of any big fish or squid, just heaps of whiting and yellow fin bream.
As it costs us $1500/pp for the flight up + car rental, can anyone please recommend what time of year has the best catches for the humble landbased fisherman ?
Thanks in advance.

What and Where
Submitted by Ganged on Thu, 2009-02-26 11:18Hi guys
I know this is the best place to start on my journey of learning.
What I would like to know is what type of fish can i target from beach or rocks. (northern suburbs)
I have 2 light rods a 6ft and a 8ft i also have a cheap and nasty beach combo. This is just till i get the hang of casting and all the stuff that goes with fishing from the surf. I have managed to have some luck with some under size taylor, some nice whiting and herring.
I would love to hook something of some size pref something i can eat, it should taste good.
Where is best to go and what do i use. I plan to go to flat rock soon but that will have to be an overnighter.
Thanks in advance

Quobba Help for July
Submitted by Happy Hooker on Wed, 2009-02-25 12:55Off to Quobba in July. Staying at the Station and havent been there before.
Looking for some info on what fishing gear (rod size/type/line etc) to take and any tips.
Will be bottom fishing and ballooning but not sure rod size etc to use and also terminal tackle needs (lures etc). Have balloned heaps and know dangers of rock fishing etc so just need help on required fishing gear .
Have heard of the spots but wanting an idea of where you fish to balloon and bottom fish , good beaches and roughly how to get there and how long it takes to walk to them/difficulty in getting there (ie load back pack and climb, you can drive to spot and fish from back of car etc).
Any help appreciated plus any assistance in finding out where you can get a map of the place also.
Cheers

A Bit more distance
Submitted by ody on Mon, 2009-02-09 21:25
Hi Ya,
For those of us who are shore bound but would like a bit of extra distance here is how it is done.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cz10kyUvyqA&feature=channel
Now all I have to do is find a 50 hectare property where I can practice without fear of clonking some poor unspecting passerby on the head with a errant sinker.
Cheers.

Loonies/Flatrock
Submitted by Mossie on Sat, 2009-02-07 14:37Hey Guys,
Ive been reading a fair bit on Loonies / Flat rock on previous topics that have been posted and I've decided to go there tomorrow arvo for a bit of a look around and a fish. I've got Sherbs mud map that he posted and I have a fair idea where to go. Being our first time out there is there anything we need to look out for in terms of tracks ect and is flat rock the better option for the afternoon ? The tide is on the rise and the high will be at 10:00pm wind is forecast for 16knts S,SE - So it shouldnt be too bad down there for Tailor with a bit of shop in the water ...
Have most of you used the conventional beach rig there ? Ive had a look on the links on google maps and most of the grounds there looks a bit reefy .... Is the order of the day bait casting with sinker or popper / metal slices ?
Thanks Guys in advance - Ill let you know how we go ...
We will be planning another un up there soon. So maybe some fo you may want to tag along

Quobba??
Submitted by Roger Knife on Sat, 2009-01-17 04:26Alright fellas
Just joined up to the site, as am coming over from the really, bl**dy cold UK in august. Will be doing mainly LB fishing as will be with the Mrs. Keen to catch some of your powerhouse fish that you got. Might be able to stay a couple/three days in Quobba. Is it worth it and is it relatively easy for a pommie novice to fish. Fish a lot in UK but i reckon you may use different methods/styles here... any advice would be great.
Cheers Rog
