Homeless people sleeping at NOR marina rockwalls
Submitted by Dasho on Fri, 2008-02-22 08:48Couple of months ago when I went fishing at Hillarys marina, I saw 2 separate beaten up old cars with people living out of them. One was in front of AQUA, and the other in front of the café on the north wall.
Wednesday night at Ocean Reef marina there was a guy living out of a shopping trolley in front of the BBQ’s, who later moved to the rock wall opposite the bay dragging his trolley across the rocks.
Must be hard living with all the mozzies, rats, roaches, cats and bogans that plague the marinas at night.

Calling all Ballooners...
Submitted by dpost80 on Thu, 2008-02-07 14:03G'day fellow fisho's...
I need some advise...
Looking at doing some ballooning off the cliffs near Kalbarri in April; have never done it before, don't know what gear I need, and don't really know what to do/how to do it...
So... what is your advise?
What sort of gear do I need? - I was thinking approx 10 foot land based game rod, decent o/head, 50 pound mono, leader, flying gaff, long handle gaff, rope, gimble belt, harness (?), rock hopping shoes (?), terminal tackle, helium gas bottle, balloons; - do I need all this? do I need anything else... any recommendations with this gear? - brands etc...
How do I balloon? - any video's you guys can recommend? bait v hb lures v soft plastics v anything else
Any tips/hints/things to look out for?
Would really appreciate any advise anyone can give.
Cheers,
damo

Wednesday Night fishing session
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2008-01-24 10:14Headed down to a beach north of cott for some arvo / Night fishing action.
We were targeting Tailor, but with the full moon out i thought we would be struggling to get any.
During the Arvo we hooked some monster herring which i was going to keep for Cray bait.
As the night went on we were constantly getting harrassed by sand whiting destroying out Mulies.
So i decided to chuck a whole herring out and see what happens.
It had been int he water 15-20 minutes with not real action except some small bits missing due to small fish. At this stage it was about 9.40PM and not much action
Then i had a bit of a tug on the line...but no hook up. Would in to find the head of the herring missing.
So i cast it back out, waited about 2 minutes then boom...bitten off!!!. I wound my line in to find my sinker still sttached to the 3 way swivel but the line was very frayed.
So Scano Cut his rig off his line, and gave it to me (It was setup for shark fishing, and i could cast further with the 14ft rod)
So i put the rig on, put a herring on and out she went again.
I think i waited about 2 more minutes, and then i could feel a tap tap on the line and the tip of the rod looked like it was getting a bit. So i striked it! and an instant hook up.
Gave it a few winds and thought...ray a small one and continued to wind in. Then boom... it took off like a freight train and almost spooled me in no more than 2 minutes. I think i would have had about 20-40m of line left maybe.
Mind you i was fishing with only 20LB mono.
After a good hour of pulling this thing in, and giving scano a go as my arms were burning... it finally got closer to the beach. and before long we saw something breach the surface, which looked like the tail of a Sting Ray.
So for another 10 or so minutes we sat there thinking "God how are we going to get a ray of this size up"
Then about 10 minutes later it got closer..and we could see 3 fins!!!!! it was no Ray...it was a shark...and a big one. after seeing this we didnt care what the time was, how long it would take...we just wanted to get it on the shore how ever we could!
With only using 20lb line, i could not pull this fish up over the sand ledge. So we played with it a bit up and down the little bit of beach we were on trying to get it up into the waves with no luck.
All of a sudden it came up!!! into about knee deep. Off Tailor Marc went with the 2ft Gaff to try gaff this thing!
Next thing you head Marc Yell "It's a @@##$%#$ Hammer head" And he tried to Gaff it.
He got a bit close and Gaffed it under its stomach, probably a little lower... Well it didnt like that and thrashed around and with a Big wipe of its tail and Marc went over....and then bolted out of the water........ oh no... the shark had the GAFF!!!!
So now we were really in trouble... no Gaff a monster shark... how do we get it up.
So ofcourse being Boys, we tried to be Hero's and pull the dam thing in by its Tail...(Very smart thing to do in the surf!..not)if we got the chance too. After another bloody hour going up the beach trying to beach this thing.... we had a few chances to grab its tail and pull it out, but a shark of this size is very intimmadating to anyone!! (And safety First..not stupidity)
Finally we had a great chance to get it...was fairly beached, so Scano and marc went charging in..... and scano grabbed the tail, but with the current pushing down beach the shark moved downwards and the line touched Scano's leg and pinged.....
In an instant it was all over... Over 2 hours trying to get this thing in not caring how we got it in, how long it would take....this thing was a record in its own... 20LB line and a 6-8ft 25+KG's (i would say) Hammer head shark!
At the end i was pouring out with sweat....as sore as all hell my back and arms were on fire.
This morning i woke to a very sore groin from the butt of the rod...and sore shoulders!!
What a night thats all i can say. Easily the biggest thing ive ever hooked...and on 20LB mono from the beach who would of thought!
At the end of the night, had a 2+ hour fight with a shark, the shark went back to the ocean, i was very sore, my 20LB line on the penn is stuffed... but what an excperience! what a sight to even see.
3 guys came down onto the beach and couldnt believe there eyes with this thing thashing around in the water....

Fishwrecked Fish Comp?!?
Submitted by BenY on Sun, 2008-01-20 20:43Hi all just wondering if we are going to have a fishwrecked comp anytime soon? With the school holidays nearly over i guess its a bit late but i'm sure with all the grown organised Men and Women on this awesome site we can get one together before the school holidays end and it'll be a good excuse for mums, dads, kids, people in relationships, single people to go fishing for the weekend. Possible excuse to come to Perth and see the fireworks if this can get organised before Australia Day.
Apart from that it could be dump the kids, skip school or disappear for "a while" to do some fishin!
Idea is out there what do you guys reckon?
Cheers,

new halco max
Submitted by Italiano on Thu, 2007-12-06 19:29has anyone tried the new halco max lure designed for land based anglers, I heard some where that they were based on the old mac maulers (they look very similar), I brought myself a couple today and hope to get up north over the break to try them out, they have a bit of weight to them so I reckon you could cast them a mile and come in a great range of colours

Jurien Bay
Submitted by Jas04 on Mon, 2007-11-26 07:45went fishing in jurien bay on the weekend i was a very eventful weekend. as i pulled up to the camp site my car broke down which bugger my plans to go to hill river but thought while im here might as well fish the the small jetty. went to the local tackle shop asking whats around and it sounded promising. Had a mate with me that dose not do much fishing so i had to make sure he caught something so the bug would bite and the bug did bite he was catching skippy, herring and yellow tail every cast was like that all the way till 1 in the morn so i was using a variety of live baits and had countless runs but no solid hook ups which was a pain but great fun. also we where catching plenty of tailor and snook from 30-41cm great to see plenty of fish around. even tho my car is going to cost me it was a great weekend and cant wait to go back up there in xmas

Will this ever happen again????????
Submitted by SPESS on Mon, 2007-11-12 09:04With all the talk about tailor on poppers etc around the forums at the moment i thought id share alittle miracle that happened to me late last night.
With the scorching weather i thought i might head down to hillaries for some relaxing light popper action to see what was around. Fishing with the bream gear and small poppers i started casting around hopeing to nail something of interest. After down sizing all the gear mainly including the leader (down to 8lb) just to see what would be interested in a well presented offering.
I looked at my rig and said to my self "shit i hope something big doesnt hit it" because i was using a 1 to 3kg outfit running 2lb braid and 8lb leader. I cast out and WHAM! the little popper got KO'd on the second bloop! The fish went pretty hard for a couple of minutes until at the rock edge where the leader pinged on a rock as the fish jumped......a nice tailor around the 30cm mark.
Nevermind i thought that was great fun and i retied and re cast. I hooked 3 more and they all released great, around the 30 to 35cm range. This is were the unbelievable happened! I thought id give it one last cast when the lure got crunched again! A short fight that ended up being a slightly dead wieght when winding in.
To my amazement it was the tailor i had caught about 15mins prior with a nice little 35 bubble pop green popper hanging out of its mouth conected to about 60cm of leader! I couldnt beleive my eyes and only wished i had a camera to capture this moment! This fish just wanted to give my lure back!
The fish was only small but obviously unharmed and worried to have another go at a different popper with one still inbedded in its jaw! Thanks for my lure back mate and he was released safley to swim off again. Goes to show some fish arnt put off by capture hey? One thing ill never forget.....bluddy amazing!

Newbie needs some help
Submitted by BenY on Sun, 2007-11-11 18:54Hi people,
I just started getting interested in fishing after a trip with a friend, catching lots of herring and thats about it. Although i have been told all about the fishy wonders of the ocean! Next aim after herring is tailor i guess, so please help me out with these questions yea?
I got a rod from Kmart 12ft and i got some metals lures i think its 30g pilchard thingy. I also got some ganged hooks because i was told bait fish is better.
So the questions.
1. Live NOR - Quinns Rocks area.. should i be fishing at the Mindarie groin(at the very mouth of the bay)? or off one of the groins at quinns or on the beach? for tailor.
2. Read you're meant to catch them when the water is choppy?
3. Metal lure or bait fish? Also what an average size lure or hooks i should be using?
4. Any other tips!
CHEERS,
Ben
