Holden colorado 2016 touch screen issue advice (not fishing related)
Submitted by beeroclock on Thu, 2024-07-11 11:32Gday guys my son just brought home a 2016 colorado all good with it otherwise but when he got home he realised the touchscreen works only intermittently or not at all (didnt think to check it at the dealership). The quick fixes seem to be detach neg battery terminal to reboot, go to menu select factory reset or remove unit and check fine wiring. If all fails an electronics place in queensland says they fix them for $495 + $45 postage. Just wondering if anybody used an electronic place here in perth if they have had the same issue. Apparantly its an issue with touch screens in others car makes and models as well cheers for any advice

Brownlow Medal
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2024-07-10 16:30Seen on the news that they want to change the criteria for the Brownlow and Rising Star medal selection now that a few of the top players have been suspended for various offences.
The medals stand for the FAIREST and Best player, not just the best player and if tis is dne it makes a mockery of all those who have missed out in the past 70odd years since its inception.

Bream rod
Submitted by Maverick on Thu, 2024-07-04 00:27Hi there, I am in the market for a new rod for flicking plastics and small lures , I have a 2 piece and 1 piece Drop shot at the moment and a couple of custom light rods (made for fishing line class), just wondering if anyone has a suggestion on something new or stick to what I have, I am using a 1000 size Ultrega with PE1 and a 2500 DAIWA Calidia KIX with PE 1.5 (the reel has up to 7kg of drag available).Mainly light river and inshore stuff but the occasional big Murry cod and Yellowbelly thrown in.
If you are into the brim scene a couple of reccomendations would be welcome.
Thanks, Brendan.

79 Guardian Refurb - PT 2
Submitted by Brock O on Sun, 2024-06-23 11:32Hey Lads,
Part 2..I said a few months but it's taken four, again work was in 2 or 3 hrs blocks as that's all I can manage after work or on weekends between other family commitments.
For anyone interested it started here > http://fishwrecked.com/forum/79-guardian-refurb
So material wise I was lucky to draw on a mates mate and a work contact to get a bit of help and save a few dollars. Could only get 600 chop strand mat and 600 quad axial mat to start with so went with that, yeah saved a few dollars there but used it in the resin as it took a lot to soak the thicker glass. Lay up would consist of a chop, then a wozen mat then another chop on top. Being a newby to laying fibreglass was one thing...doing it 35 deg plus summer heat another, not the best planning but so be it, first small section went well, the second larger section I bit of more than I could handle, I won't lie the second section I came unstuck, had to wait till late arvo, grind the top layer back re-prep and start again in the morning. lesson learnt there on work area and cure time. I had to ask the question about the white spots, it looks like air / dry spots but it's not....It's sweat, and there was plenty of it in the heat, so on went the headband after that as the water is not a good mix.
There are more than a few ways to do this, and there's strong opinions on the different ways.., ply, marine ply, different foams, resins, epoxy etc etc. Mate has worked in the fibreglass boat industry for quite a while, so got a bit of help from him, the rest was reading FB and online threads. I worked on the basics below.
- All surfaces were mechanically prepared prior lay up - 24 grit, this included the marine ply.
- All surfaces wiped with Acetone
- Resin mixed for 1 minute as a minimum before starting
- All marine ply soaked with resin for a period before glass lay
- Roll both ways across all surfaces to remove trapped air
So the hull got 3 layers of glass all over to start with, this included the transom.
I then cut the transom, this changed angles so I did it in two parts as per the original removed, bottom half being 50mm thick, 25mm sheets back to back, top sections being 36mm thick, 18mm back to back, install and glue with resin and Cabosil, then another 3 layers of glass over the top.
Next was the stringers, but first more grinding...completed a quick once over straight up. The stringers took a bit of marking and trimming before getting the correct fit, Longways being recommended, these again 36mm thick. Made a jig to hold them in place, the inside proved a natural prep due to the angler so filled that with a mix of resin and Cabosil first, the other side I just poured resin in the top void until the area was full. I then glassed these in, again 3 layers.
Following that...more grinding
Next lot of stringers were the originals that I cut out, these 30mm thick, I cut and grind these to suit. Mate stated the material to be Oregon, the owner of Guardian boats, later Guardian pools loved the stuff apparently, my first thought by look was its ply, but it's actually a hardwood but still light weight. These all got glued in again with resin and Cabosil. I could give these my hardest kick with just the glue alone, no chance of breaking...pretty strong as is without the glass.
But again, 3 layers of glass over the lot. This was painful on the knees and took a lot of work to complete.
Then.....more grinding!
Before a good layer of flow coat with wax, although using Vinylester resin I wanted an extra coat to seal the glass should water ever make its way inside. Overkill maybe but I had the flowcoat given to me so why not, at this stage I felt I had turned a corner...finally!
Next was getting the tank sorted, I called on fellow FW member and mater Paul D to help, Paul runs his own business Perth Stainless services, he specialises in industrial kitchens, range hoods etc, basically anything in stainless sheeting Paul is the man. So I got a template sorted with some sizes and it was cut and pressed up in no time.
Home for fab and welding, I did this myself although I struggled with the thin shit!! a few baffles, a breather both ends, fuel sender, 38mm fuel in and 5/16" fuel out. The tank I Pneumatic tested using my small tyre compressor and soapy water, didn't like the idea of filling with water...few leaks fixed, should do the job at 160 litres approx. Total cost around $700 mark.
Added some additional timbers using 25mm thick leftovers, these prepped and glued in where the seats will sit giving additional thickness and strength. All this was prepped and covered with Cabosil before the floor sheets were laid to help lock everything in.
All the floor sheets were prepped with a layer of glass on the underside for additional strength and protection, these 15mm thick, originally only 12mm. all stringers were prepped and covered with cabosil before the sheets went down, this after a short cure period.
Once the sheets were down 2" stainless screws went in, more grinding before another 3 layers of glass was applied, this now 450csm and 450 quad woven mat. I wasn't sure what to do about the fuel lines coming up through the floor, but ended up using PVC piping, this was prepped and glassed in. I didn't want to have any soft hatches but in the end made two to access the sender unit and fuel lines should they ever need to be changed out, these I will seal in place using Marine sika before the final coating is applied over the top, these can be cut out reasonably easy if needed.
So that's it for this stage, next will be the transom build, strengthen the cab, finish helm and build the cuddy cabin back out. Might add a bit extra to the front for future anchor winch and side walls for future Pot winch.
Totally hours to this point 144, cost so far just under 3k, but have the timber and glass to finish the job, will need another 20kg of resin and paint still to sort.
Used - 140 liters of Vinyl Ester resin, 600csm role 48m, 600 quad axial 20m, 2 x 18mm sheets marine ply, 1 x 25mm sheet marine ply, 4 x sheets 15mm marine ply. 2 liters catalyst, 30 liters of Acetone, 1kg of Cabosil.

4WD Track Quobba Station to Warroora Station
Submitted by Wes F on Sat, 2024-06-15 11:26Advice required for driving the 4wd track from Quobba Station through Gnarloo to Warroora station.
Has anyone got any recent information about what condition the track is like, from my reserach it appears to be fairly straight forward sandy/lime stone track.
Plan is to casually bounce along the coast with nom set plan.
I understand the is a public access road through the stations and camping is stricted to certain areas.
Cheers Wes.

Denham Sea Rescue
Submitted by Bradmac73 on Mon, 2024-06-10 16:27
Spent a week in denham just after the fiesta giving the refurbed boat a run. Second day starter motor gave up the ghost when we tried to start to return from Useless Loop. After an hour trying to resuscitate it with the old knockometer and various other unsuccessful methods, had no choice but to give the sea rescue a buzz. No problems, sent them our co- ords and 40 mins later there they were in their magnificent vessel. Towed in at 18knots through a bit of slop beautifully. Dropped us at the ramp, gave us details of a bloke to hit up for a replacement starter motor next day and by mid morning we were back amongst it. Brilliant service by a couple of legends all free (but dropped them a chunk of cash the next day before heading out). Can't speak highly enough of the service thanks again lads.

Abrolhos North Island
Submitted by Rob H on Thu, 2024-05-23 20:42Dragged boat up to Kalbarri and headed to North Island and Wallabies for a week.
Covered almost 200 miles, thunderstorms and 40 knots, hail on the first night.
Met some fisher crew out there which was awesome, treated us like family.
Caught a few fish, didn't see a shark til last day.
On the way back, I thought fuck it, let's go into Lucky Bay for the night.
Was a good night, met a few people, socialised, then trolled back to Kalbarri past Wagoe and got some mackie just outside the balloons on the way through in a 30+NE breeze.

results from using mercury power tune internal engine cleaner
Submitted by Paul N on Tue, 2024-05-14 09:44This is a bit long winded but just had to share it.
Just tought id post this as it may help someone . I have a 4 cylinder 3ltr mercruiser inboard that i had installed new back in 2007 . ive always looked after it and has now done 1500 hours .
Motor runs fine but has slowly lost a bit of its get up and go over the years so i decided to do a compression test . Unfortunately the news wasnt good . the results were as follws 115psi 120psi 115psi and number 4 cylinder was down to 90psi . I repeated the test 3 times with 2 different compression guages with the engine both hot and cold and the results were all the same . To say i was devistated was an understatement .
I am mechanically minded so set about to diagnose the problem . did a bit of investigating but bottom line was that i had no pressure coming back up the dipstick tube so decided it must be a cyliner head issue .
Off to my local mercruiser mechanic and got price of a new head $5k + install. Recon my head was a cheaper option .
During the discussion he was raving about the success he has had with internal engine cleaner . I had heard of seafoam in the past and this sounded like the same stuff , different brand . To be honest i recon it was all crap but thought what the hell ive got nothing to lose . So spent the $22 and went home with a bottle of the mystery juice .
He told me to take out spark plus and squirt a generous amount in to each cylinder , let sit over night , crank motor with plugs still out to expell the liquid then re install plugs .
After that start motor , bring to temp and slowly squirt cleaner into carby keeping revs up . Engine should now be clean .
Well i sort of did what he said but only waited 6 hours after filling cylinders . Had absolutely no expectations of anything changing my low compression issue .
Cranked the motor to expell the liquid from the cylinders and decided to do a cold compression test before i put plugs back in . Decide to test the bad cylinder first . Well F**k me i now had 145 psi in that cylinder up from 90psi . That cant be correct so i did it 3 more times with same result . Then did other 3 cylinders with same result . tried again with my other compression guage and still the same . At this stage im gobsmacked and went and had a cuppa to think about it .
After cuppa i decided to run motor to get to operating temp and test again , results were the same . Then i ran motor and squirted down the carby as told , let sit for 30minutes , ran motor again then let sit for an hour .
Did another few compression tests and now i have 150psi on 2 cylinders 155 on the third and 160psi on the one that was 90 . Absolutely amazing .
As a back yard mechanic ive always been able to fix things and always thought fuel addatives and the like were a wast of time and money . Boy have i changed my mind .Assume i had stuck rings and carbon buid up internally .
I have no affiliation with the product and Im not saying this is a cure for all things but in my situation it worked and having googled it im not the only one that has had good resuts with seafoam or in my case mercury power tune engine cleaner . Its also a testament to the mechanic that told me to give it a go - there are good ones that are not just out to rip you off. would have been easy to say need a new head .
Hope this helps someone
Cheers Paul

Port Gregory/Horrocks launching
Submitted by Rob H on Mon, 2024-05-06 23:38Anyone got any recent info on either Port Gregory or Horrocks for launching a large boat and retrieving?
Looking to do a trip to North Island and Wallabies end of week, haven't been able to confirm if the tractor is available next week at PG yet.
They tell me the beach is pretty good for launching but retrieve will need assistance.
Alternative is up to Shark Bay but I see there is a fishing contest on up there at that time.

2 Stroke Oil
Submitted by Bradmac73 on Thu, 2024-04-11 15:54
What 2 stroke oils do people use? At my recent service was advised to use genuine Merc oil, seems hard to find and not sure how it would be better than any other decent brand?
I've generally used Penrite, Quicksilver or Gulf Western, All TC-W3 so not sure if there is really much difference?
Is there any truth in the old saying "Oils aint Oils"?
