New Fisheries Minister

Looks like we have a new Fisheries Minister, Jackie Jarvis.

Quick look shows a career public servant who worked for DPIRD.

Her Bio looks like a carbon copy of Heather Brayford (Director of DPIRD), no connection or interest at all in fishing.

Someone may have had dealings with her and add thoughts, but from the outside the close connection to DPIRD doesn't feel positive to me.

Lets see how Don Punches "pre-election assurances" to RFW and FFWA translate to a new minister.

Often, these are swept into the bin while cleaning out his office unfortunately.

day trip point Samson

Headed down for a day trip to point Samson for something different.  did a load of miles getting a few fish out wide. We got a couple of golden trevally and I managed to get my first nanny  not a monster but it's a first. Headed in and made 1 last stop to clean the boat down . In 15 minutes we landed Sandys first trout that went 620 , a chinaman of average size , another golden trev and a nice size black

Long weekend weather

What are the collective thoughts about this weekend? I went to Rotto last Saturday to see my daughter complete her first Rotto swim and the forecast got it massivelt wrong and we got spanked! All the forecasts had the wind dropping to below 10 knots in the middle of the day and it just didn't drop all day so I'm a bit scepticle. Almsot the whole week has been windier than forecast.

weather windows was open

The weather gods opened up the windows for half a day so we took the chance. Getting up at sparrows on a weekend sucks but we make these sacrifices for fishing.

Wasn't the best going out but once there was ok. Managed to get our bag of blacks with a few flags to top up the give away.  landed 1 red  but was just under size along with loads of smaller model blacks. All up a great morning out.

convoy to Broome

Just had 12 semi loads of fuel and food head off to Broome from Hedland.  Permits were given for them to travel through flood waters

Footy Tipping

 Hi All

Always love the tipping comp. Even just for bragging rights (mostly not), and not money.

The more the merrier.

Fishing Ban

 G'day all

Heard from a pretty reliable source that if Labor get back in at this this election, they are going to put a 2 year Demersal ban in place. They are trying to keep it under wraps as they don't want it to affect their campaign. I really hope this isn't the case! Has anyone else heard about this?

Black anchor fuel issue - stalling in gear at low revs

 Evening folks.
My 2001 25hp merc is having some issues with running. Once it's up and going all good and it's happy to zoom around all day, but getting there is the issue.

backstory:

hasn't run for 12 months and then nearly 12 months before then.

Got it serviced 15th Jan prior to a trip south. Carby was cooked but recovered. Fuel tank had been empty and I made up new fuel for it before service.

took it for a run before we went south and it started fine, ran fine for the first 10 minutes then as we slowed down to drop some crab nets, it wouldn't accelerate again and stalled. Started again, stalled again as it went into gear. Repay again.
finally got it going after massaging it through the stall point and it worked fine other than loosing reverse....

down south, it took a bit to get going and stalled a lot at low revs. But once it gets going it's fine.

Three trips out down south with the same. Once it's in gear it stalls, but once you get it past that point, it zooms around no issue.

today, reverse has disappeared again. Stalled as I putted away from the ramp but got going again to garden island where it started playing up hard. Turned out to be the fuel hose which I replaced. See other thread for the story on that one.

anyhow, on the way home, it continued to stall once in gear but I discovered that the fuel bulb is going soft at the point in which it stalls but if I vigorously pump the bulb, I can get it past that point without any dip in revs.

we got back from GI at 15-20 knots and stalled as I approached the jetty and went to accelerate from idle.

the motor is one of those ones that you cannot rev unless it's in gear without lifting the cowling. When I do that, it backfires and stalls.

Out of the water, when in gear, it doesn't stall. I can take it right through the rev range without issue (sorry neighbours).

So fuel hose is new and bulb stays hard

fuel is new

spark plugs are new

connections to fuel tank and motor seem tight

carby copped $150 of service 20 days ago. $850 in total! More than my 250hp!

any ideas?

Big thanks!

Took the tinny out for a burn to Garden Island today to get rid of some fuel I had mixed for our trip of the south west.

Got across OK but once in Herring bay, it started to play up and was stalling more than it normally does at low revs. We had just done 20 knots for 20 minutes but checked the fuel tank breather and it was ok, fuel connections and the one on the tank was loose. Filter suggested fuel was OK. Fuel was also 50\1 and brand new.

I was able to putt at around 1.5-2 knots so picked up a mooring, sorted out the fuel hose and gave the motor some noise and it stalled again. Checked everything again and again and stall stall stall with the bulb going soft.

Drift putted to the beach to troubleshoot some more and went about looking for a fuel hose to borrow to see if it was the issue. One bloke kindly offered me his but with different fittings, I didnt want to stuff around with his but we had a chat and agreed the fuel hose was the issue.

walked along the beach asking if anyone had a spare hose I could buy and second boat along, a bloke offered me his tank and fuel hose for a tender he didn't have any more...brand new and for free! Graciously accepted the hose and after replacing a fitting, got it all connected up and made it back to the ramp under our own steam.

I am sorry I didn't get your name but Thankyou, you legend! May the karma gods smile on you!

I took this pic to get your number to text you thanks but the photo unfortunately wasn't as good as I had hoped.

The crusher is Wrapped up

Got the call telling us the wrap was all done. It was organised for a 5 am start on the job with it being a bit cooler than middle of the day.

To say we're happy with the end result is an understatement as in my opinion looks so realistic and vibrant. A big thanks to Sarah and Endre from Wrapped up custom graphics

Political commentary, pretty funny

Fuel Tank Replacement

Hi fishwreckers,

I'm about to embark on a replcement of my underfoor fuel tank. It's aluminium, 140 ltrs and has sprung a leak!  I'm keen to hear people's opinons or experience with the various replacement options. Am I better off with another ali fabricated tank, or go stainless or polypropelene.  I was leaning toward poly, but can't find much info on them locally outside of prefab ones available.

Is there anywhere locally that fabricates these to specific requirements? They seem to be a popular choice in the US but not so much here.  Or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place?

cheers legends!

Deckwash install question

Hi guys im planning on installing a seaflow deck wash its specs say its  max amp draw is 12A    and its  fuse  is 18A. Should i still run an inline 18A fuse between the positive battery terminal and the pump?  there is no inline fuse on the positive wire of the pump (i presume the 18A fuse it has is internal). Im planning on running it to its own basic toggle on/off switch installed near the pump  (not through the main boat dash switch panel)  cheers for any advice

new look for the crusher

In the process of getting a wrap done for the crusher. A local new business has started up so we thaught we would give them a go.

Think it looks great super imposed.  Hopefully it will look as good in real life

weather woes

forecast was looking good to finally get out deep tomorrow and have a proper bash! now looking like a no go. . with this cyclone up north, predictions seem to be changing every time i look lol.

have found this season to be a bit frustrating to say the least!

Rottnest Swim

Hi All,

I've been skippering in the Rotto swim for the last few years and am doing it again this year with my usual swimmer. A friend has reached out looking to see if I know someone that would be interested in assisting his team so I said I'd post something here. Your boat needs to be big enough for you, 4 swimmers and 2 paddlers. They are great guys and the day is loads of fun.

If you are interested in more details about helping out and what it entails, please reach out and I'll answer any of your questions. If you are happy to take it further I''ll give you his mobile number (or pass on yours if you prefer).

Thanks!

Daryn

boating in mandurah

Hey guys. taking the kids down to crab in the peel inlet on the weekend. was hoping to drivethe boat up afterwards to the bay and get an ice cream from simmos. Can anyone tell me if this is accessible, and if there is anywhere to dock, to quickly run in? or is it too shallow/restricted access? i will not be very popular if ice cream isnt an option!!

cheers!

Shark Cull

Its been a while since we've had a shark cull discussion on here, usually makes for some interesting reading....

4 deaths in a year and a half in SA....

Time to stop the rot and start getting rid of em....

Fuck the cage diving boats off and get them scared of boats and humans again like the old days....

This thing popped up earlier and grabbed hold of a cray pot being pulled, crushed the steel pot and dragged it 500m....

Apparently the lads were told there had been an aggressive white about the place earlier in the day....

Thoughts to his friends and family, bloody tragic....

Yamaha service NOR

 Gday guys and girls,

Recently moved to two rocks from Dunsborough and the yammy is very near to needing the 100hr service so thought I'd put it out there that I don't know anyone around here and have no knowledge of the good/bad service operators getting round so wondering if anyone could recommend where to get it done? Don't mind travelling to get it done to make sure it's not a cowboy scenario that's gonna say shit has been done and it hasn't. Thanks in advance for any recommendations. Cheers

Battle on the beach

Got a chance for a beach session today. Started off very quiet until my line started peeling out.  With about an hour back and forth I finally had this beast on the waters edge and thankfully had another fisho give me a hand getting it out of the water to remove the hook and a quick pic.

Ended with 2 small sharks and 2 queenie.

Garage Ventilation

My gym owner has closed doors for family so I managed to buy some equipment so I can start training with a couple of lads at home until I find a new gym I feel home at.

The main issue is heat and dust and I've run another branch off my swampy (allowed for the extra outlet when upgrading my unit recently) into the garage. Haven't installed the outlet into the gyprock yet.

The main garage door faces east and heats up significantly in the first half of the day and it looks like I can insert high density foam into the individual panels of each section. The rear garage door cops the arvo sun so installing a shade sail outside there for that and shade for the plants and adjacent dining room. I installed bats above the garage ceiling too.

I think I've got the heat issue as sorted as I can but the dust is another issue. I'm thinking about installing a ventilation fan with an inline motor but what level should I look at installing it? Ceiling will obviously be a lot neater but shoukd I look to install something at floor height too?

Cheers JF

Binoculars for the boat

 Hi all

I'm going to get new binoculars for the boat and am looking for recommendations. They will just be used for general stuff and often while at anhor/on a mooring. I had Kinglux 10 x 50 waterproof ones but the waterproof coating went all manky and couldn't be fixed. Maybe 10x is too high magnification based on a bit of research I've done. They don't need to be waterproof as such as they won't be used in rain or with spray off the water. They will just be kept in a marine environment but in their case etc. Budget to around $250 give or take a bit.

Any thoughts appreciated.

new species for me

Finally got out after several weeks of windy conditions.  Wasn't the best so didn't go too far out but managed a few grassies and a legal trout but landed a first for me . Wasn't sure what I had on but this nice size leopard shark came to the surface. Quickly removed the hooks and a quick pic and was returned safe.

Tie downs

Hey guys. Just wondering what people are using for tie downs to secure the boat when travelling. So far struggling to find transom straps that have a high enough load rating, and the ones that go across the whole boat that have a high enough rating have a massive ratchet which is hard to ensure doesn't bash into boat.

looking hopefully for something secure, and easy to apply that won't damage the boat.

cheers!

Merry Christmas to all

I would like to wish all a merry Christmas.  Hope you all get to spend some quality time with family and friends during this festive season.  Hope all your stocking get filled with all the goodies you seek .

Using demersal heads for bait in closed season?

Question - has anyone (or do you know anyone who has) actually been fined for using demersal heads during the closed season?

Or a written warning?
Or been spoken to and a verbal warning?
Not talking about people who have produced a receipt etc, and I’m aware of letter of the law and that people have asked Fisheries etc.
Just fined or warned, cheers.
Only interested to see where Fisheries have actually taken this, we all already know what people have been told etc
