Best sources of weather information

The post below regarding swell prompted me to ask where people think the best sources of accurate wind and wave data can be found. I have had really accurate stuff from Willy Weather but also have seen it say the wind at Hillarys boiat harbour is 4 knots when it is very clearly a lot more than that! Most of us probably compare a number of sources so I'm interested in hearing.

Cheers

Tuesday swell

Hey guys. Hoping to get out Tuesday for a fish. Bit of swell so trying to decide whether to stay in close or if likely to be ok out a bit deep (40s). Looks like about 2m forecast. Normally I try stick to below 1.5. If the wind does what it's supposed to do reckon might be ok, don't mind if just rolling etc decent swell period so thinking hopefully just a bit of bobbing up and down?? Anyone have any opinions on whether seems like a good idea? Fairly capable boat, 23ft fibreglass. Just hoping to save some time and avoid going halfway then changing plans if possible. Hoping someone could give an indication on what these conditions would equate to out deep.

any thoughts greatly appreciated!

cheers!

As usual

As usual, fishing perfection weather this week right before the ban's lifted. Come Monday 16th a nice old 2.5- 3m swell up where I am.

Had planned to take a day off to get out for a long overdue bash no such luck FFS.

Trailer parking around Freo/Swan River

Coming down this week to do Rotto for a few days over next weekend, I've got the option that Ive used over the last 5 yrs (street parking) but have also been hearing the ranger has been a bit painful about it.

Usually launch at Leuuwin, there long term parking but I think my combination may be just a bit long for their bays.

Looking at where I can maybe just dump trailer off street and I'll park car near the ramp in a side street?

Tried Freo Sailing Club, no go

Fads

Hey guys. I'm hoping to take advantage of the online sales at the moment to gear up for a few trips to the fads this summer. Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for casting and trolling lures, as well as size and colours that might be worth picking up?

any advice greatly appreciated!

cheers!

Lessons learnt while fishing

Learnt a good one yesterday while fishing off the spoil bank. Hooked up real good and after a half hour I had a 10 ft saw fish at the edge of the water. As I was on my own I could only think of 1 way to get it up far enough to pull the hook out. Wrapped the 80lb feeder around my hand and started to pull to find out this beast wasn't done yet. 80 lb line and flesh and something gotta give . It wasn't the line . Lesson 1 don't wrap line around your hand , lesson 2 , if you do make sure the fish doesn't have any fight left in it

Catch from last beach bash

Just a quick session on the bank. Lost a couple of bigger models but nailed this one

I think I saw a red wave

Seems they got it right this time

Solar blanket to batteries

I have purchased a solar blanket and I have it connected to the starting battery. What I need to know if I open the switch to have both batteries start will this be ok to charge both batteries when it is parked up ?????

YAMAHA F250XCA 100 hour service fee by Boat City

Hi just had the first 100 hour service done on new yamaha F250XCA and total cost was  $ 1167   ($532 for parts and oils  plus  $635 for "annual service labour")  is that price high? or around ball park figure of most other yammie dealers. Just wondering if anybody had same service done at better price  cheers

lure boxes

Just curious as to where I might be able to get lure boxes to fit in the pedestal seats in the bar crusher. I have seen a few but seem to be the wrong sizes .

epic battle

Quick beach session ended with an epic battle. Not much around but got a average queenie and some good size whiting.

The pic doesn't do this thing justice. Was around 6 ft and solid , holding it up I estimate 60 to 70 kg . Took nearly an hour to subdue the beast and removed 3 other hooks from its mouth as well as mine

first trip out of point samson

Being our anniversary weekend we decided to try our luck at point Samson.

Headed down after work Friday night . Got up at 5 for a coffee and to get the boat sorted. Down at the ramp about 7 , boat in the water and running . Pulled out from the dock to find we had no steering.  With the wind blowing us towards the wrong side towards the rocks I made the decision to jump in and swim the boat back to the ramp , was not easy at all. Got up on the jetty took one look at the front of the boat and said to Sandy,  why didn't I just use the minn kota.  Lol.

A couple of quick phone calls and a drive down to karatha we had it sorted out.  Back to point Samson for a quick trip out . Not knowing where to go we headed out to an area that we got told about. Only went about 15nm but no sooner the lines were in the water they were getting hit . Every move we made resulted in fish from undersize reds up to huge golden trevs. Never lost a fish to sharks but did hook up to a couple . The damn wind came up quick and made it a slow trip back with nothing over 10 knots. All up a successful day just a pity the reds were small but as our first time there it's a starting point.

i bought a jetski - here is what i have learnt

hope this triggers a laugh in someone :-)

kids have been banging on about getting one for ages - so i finally caved and bought a 10 year old SeaDoo with 140 hours, previous owner (a mate of mine) had just spent 8k rebuilding everything (with seadoo receipts) and then decided he needed a new one....

what i have learnt...
-they idle at 1800 rpm - WTF?
-260hp on a 3 metre craft is more than enough.....
-260hp does not get you there faster if the sea is choppy
-wearing your cap backwards gets you labelled a certain name which i cant repeat here
-wearing your cap forwards means you lose your cap
-you get dirty looks from people, whether you are riding it or not, its death by association
-if you think maintaining a boat is expensive, pound for pound a jetski is frightening
-Just because it has had 8k spent on it doesnt mean it wont need more spending on it for random stuff that should last longer than 140 hours
-The "brake" reverse lever is on the portside handle bars, the (very sensitive) throttle is on the starboard side handle bars - dont mix these up when docking...

Despite it being a lot of fun, my idea of having something we could cruise around the swan on and drag to rotto for weekends is not quite "instant regret" but lets just say the relationship is not off to a good start!
:-)

this is so true

Horrocks beach ramp

Vale Laurie Chivers

For those who haven't heard Laurie passed away late last week, funeral on Tuesday.  The loss of a true boating legend known to many of us on this site.  Condolences to Luke and family

first trip in new boat

Our first trip out in the new boat "JUSTIFIED" was a success. First time using a minn kota took a bit of getting to know it but got it sussed out . Of course the first fish on the boat was returned to the sea luckily it was just a spannish flag.  Followed up with some nice black snapper of 50cm plus and a few smaller ones.  The current was absolutely ripping having to use a 16 Oz sinker to hold bottom in 20mtrs . All up a great day with a bag out in about 3 hours

transferring gps spot to new gps

With the new boat in our possession I need to transfer all our spots over and delete off spots from the old gps.

Is it as simple as removing the card and putting it in the new one. Never done it myself

Going from axiom 9 to a lowrance

Ocean’s Legacy Deep Element S591H

Hi guys, looking for a rod to pair with a Shimano Stella 20000 and have come across the Ocean's Legacy S591H, has anyone used / have one of these rods?, I was originally looking at the Shimano T curve deep jig spin 400 as I have the deep jig 200 o/h and has served me well, anyone used both?, living 1700 km away from the metro area it's hard to compare both rods in person

Cheers Yewie

Glass off out of Hedland

Had a great day out on Sunday.  Glass off conditions all day with the only drift caused by the current.  Had my youngest boy Nathan out with us for the first time in years . Very quiet for the first couple of hours with only a few Spanish flags.  Moved around a bit until Sandy got the first real hookup which turned out to be her first legal red out of hedland at 520 shortly after Nathan nailed his first blue lined emperor that went 500 . All up a great day ending with some very nice fish to take home. Probably be our last trip out in the swift craft so finished on a good note.

a couple of new toys

Well and truly gone to the dark side. The ranger has gone and replaced with a 79 series cruiser a few weeks ago and now we have gone and bought an Ali boat . A 2012 bar crusher that we collect in 2 weeks . Never thaught I would buy a cruiser or an Ali boat but times change

fish I'd for inlaws

Electric Motor Spot Lock

 Gday there Lads,

Its very enjoyable though difficult at times playing deckie to my two boys.

I'm thinking an elec motor with spot lock hold will help dad out putting the kids on the fish and also dad getting a line where he needs it....

5.6M Ali boat, any advice on the best way to go is appreciated!!

TB

bar crusher boats

Seriously looking at buying an Ali boat. Bar crushers seem to be a good one to look at. Not looking for a monster just around the 19 foot. Any thaughts on these . Not a big fan of Ali but up north it opens up more locations to fish rather than a glass

2008 Navara bits wanted

Chasing a main bearing cap off a 2008 Navara YD25, somehow have lost one while waiting for parts to arrive and ill health, when start to reassemble it found out one is missing. So its chace another cap and get it line bored then start again

Fortescue river launching

Those who are familiar with launching at Fortescue, what's a minimum tide to launch large trailer boats here?

Someone else besides Justin told me a while back they'd launched there heaps and if I needed to know anything call.

Fucked if I can remember who though

One of the hazards when you get old enough to afford to do shit, you can't remember what it was

came across this YouTube from 60 minuits

Just watching a thing on banning fishing to protect environment
