2 Stroke Oil

What 2 stroke oils do people use? At my recent service was advised to use genuine Merc oil, seems hard to find and not sure how it would be better than any other decent brand?
I've generally used Penrite, Quicksilver or Gulf Western, All TC-W3 so not sure if there is really much difference?
Is there any truth in the old saying "Oils aint Oils"?

oil
if your motor is under warranty you would probably have to use the genuine oil but any good name brand will do for an older 2 stroke

Yeah, per the above, if
Yeah, per the above, if under warranty, do whatever they tell you to do and never suggest you use anything else if they ask.
But, on my tinny, I use Valvoline because thats what the previous bloke used.

Quicksilver is made by Mercury .
Have a 4 lt bottle for my boat and had a quick look , says on back "Product of Mercury Marine" . Quicksilver is branded for sale to consumers , Merc oil branded for dealers.
I have used Gulf West ( smokey and bit rough) Valvoline seems ok but thought I would switch back when there was a sale on . Seemed to run better but hey who knows... Recommend that you dont mix semi synth oil with mineral oil ( read that somewhere) so use fuel up first if premixed etc .

synthetic tcw
Did a bit if testing , mixing diffrent tcw oils, and yes , some of the synthetic oils seemed fine for a week or two, then seperated, one developed a strong smell of amonia, and one formed a thick plasticy layer on the bottom of the glass jar. I would be very cautious with mixing the synthetics, oil is cheaper than the motor.

Thanks all
Interesting re quicksilver and merc. Was not aware of that and solves my problem as that was my likely choice and I have a merc, so sorted.
