using live bait in the surf

I have not used live bait much. How do you get the bait out?

Let it swim? Or cast it out & hope it doesn't die on impact?

Landbased.

Thanks.

G'day from bunbury

Hey everyone. Name is Al, from bunbury way. Do landbased fishing in and around surrounding areas. New to forums so thought I would say g'day!

Read a few post from people in the same area. I work week on week of so am usually fishing somewhere through the week if anyone is ever keen !

question about wire

 Maybe a silly question??

I often read that wire can put fish off. Especially mulloway, but even fish like tailor.

Why are they put off? Is it becuase they see the wire? Or becuase the feel it when the bite? Or can they somehow sense the wire (some sort of reaction with metal/water).

I have tried to catch Mulloway a couple of times (standard snelled rig) and have lost the hooks to tailor biting through.

So, should I snell the hooks to a very short multistrand wire leader (just as long as the hooks, so the fish dont see it). Or am I better to just use thicker mono leader with hooks snelled. Maybe 60lb or would metro tailor still bite through that easy. 80lb?

Thanks for any advice.

How's Floreat to Trigg lately ?

Hey guys, been probably a month or more since fishing the local beaches, planning to head down friday evening and use up a bunch of bait left in the freezer.

Im thinking Floreat, maybe brighton, or maybe trigg. Are there chopper tailor at the moment? Will target tailor , hope for mullas or small shark.

Do the shallow sand banks still extend out a fair way at Floreat or has the beach structure improved? Will look carefully for the right gutter of course.

Any feedback welcome.     Cheers.

Going to Coral Bay for Xmas, any suggestions please?

Hi guys, going for 2 weeks over xmas, went there about 6 years ago with minimal fishing gear but this time I'm abit more prepared.

Just wondering if anyone can suggest any good areas to fish/fish to target please? Im not looking for anyones secret spots, just some advice.

Ill be landbased with 4wd and will be set up for spinning & beach casting.

Thanks in advance!

Letting mulloway take the bait

 Hello guys,

question for the mulloway veterans,

my bait is being played with, I have my bail arm flipped so to minimise line resistance and therefore spooking, it moves a bit then stops, sometimes will move again and stop and that's it, no more love.

this has happened a few times now in my quest for swan river mulloway,

I normally wait for around five mins and check my bait, baits either dead or gone,

i run either a circle hook through the back if using live or I'll double snell two circles if using dead.

how long do you Vets let allow te bait to be played with, and if it stops, how long do you wait for a bait check, how long do you allow the fish to run with the bait before applying some pressure to set hooks,

hope my question can be ansewed, thanx

Popping for Whiting at night

Anybody tried or had any luck with poppers at night?

found plenty of big specimens in the river so I will try anyway but just after some thoughts

Esperance

Me and five of my mates are heading down to esperance on the 8th of december for a bit of a Broliday. Unfortuantely none of us have done any fishing down there. If anyone has any tips at all it'll be greatly appreciated, such as tackle, bait, lures and locations. Im very keen on catching a salmon of any size so I can cross it off the list, but not too fussed if I dont, just would love some solid fishing sessions. However I would like to avoid fishing off rocks where you can be swept away.

Cheers for any help given

Australind - Recreationl Fishing

Has anyone been to the end of Leschenault drive in Australind to fish? It is at the mouth of the estuary, I think.

While sightseeing Australind few months back, I drove to the end of the (unsealed) road, and saw a small little jetty(?).

There was no one there.

Is that a good place to fish?

Looks like a good place to bring the kids for some lightweight fishing.

Thanks

Burns beach drag too tight

My mate is over visiting justnow so too him to burns beach for a night fish. Told him never too leave the drag on incase something big takes it. Anyway at midnight he decides not to use the rod bell I gave him and leaves the drag on tight. I ended up chasing my rod in to water, missed by inches. If anyone sees it although prob never will, let me know. Starting to see funny side now!

Wilbinga Flies

Went to Wilbinga on Friday afternoon for an overnighter and have never seen the flies so bad. I always thought Overlander was the worst place I had seen for flies but this experience beat it hands down.

To make matters worse, decided to fish near flatrocks but didn't clear the bombies and actually caught more snags than fish for the evening.

Highlight of the trip was a mate that was meeting us up there that wasn't experienced at all in 4WDing and having to rescue them from a rather precarious situation having his tires being undermined by the incoming tide whilst on a wave eroded drop off...silly bastard!

Wilbinga clean up

For those interested the clean up is next Sunday

Busso Jetty

 Hi all,

I am planning a trip southwest during weekdays with family.

Busso and Hamelin Bay near Augusta.

What can I catch in the mornings usually at Busso Jetty?

Any recommendations elsewhere as well tourist sites?

what size braid - metro landbased

Just interested to know what size/weight braid most of you use for metro beach fishing (Lets call metro between Preston to Moore River).

Eg spinning with lures for Tailor and/or sinker fishing for tailor/skippy/mulla etc with typical paternoster surf rig.

I currently use 14lb for the medium spin outfit and 30lb for 12 foot beach rod. But I am thinking that the 30lb is too heavy and I should probably go to 20lb. I usually have a 1-4 metre mono leader (weight depending on location and target fish).

Thanks

keeping/freezing whiting as bait...

I’m heading down past Mandurah for an early morning beach fish next week. It’s the first time I have been fishing in about 6 months, so I’m REALLY looking forward to it, and hoping to catch a decent feed.

I was planning to head down to my local metro beach a few days before to try catch some whiting to freeze and use as bait. Either whole instead of mulies, or fillets on 2 snelled 2/0 hooks. I hear tailor love them and there have been some big skippy around there lately.

Are there any tips for freezing whiting for bait? Or is it just a bad idea? Maybe freeze with a little sea water in the bag? Or just wash in sea water then freeze in an air tight plastic bag?

I know it would be best to just catch whiting and use them live/fresh, but I wont have time to catch them and still try and get into the tailor for sunrise.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Help needed: kids & Rotto landbased

Landbased ballooning/slide baiting,

Hey fello fishwreckers, i was wondering if any could share past experience on ballooning, i have ballooned plenty of times with helium for mackies at places like steep point, kalbarri, but i tried on the weeknd with the stiff easterly off the beach with five normal size party balloons and squid rattling float, it drifted a whole mullet out very well  but obviosley was drifting not acting like a skip bait, has anyone had success using this method? And if any one could share light on what i need for slide baiting? Do i need to be well elivated? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Cheeers.....

Secret Harbour

I'm considering hitting secret harbour beach this Saturday night, seeing as though they are predicting 20knots SSE pretty much blowing across the surf beach, would it be worth the effort or be to painfull? I haven't fished the area at all, has anyone has much sucess with tailor over that way?

Cheers old salty

Wilbinga tailor 1 nov

Down to Wilbinga for a tailor sesh this morning. Saw the fairly stiff southerly predicted by seabreeze for the morning, but they always overestimate the wind in the morning right? Out the door by 3:15am and deflating by 4 I was making good time. Wondered why I didn't see many people camping on the way through, worked it out as soon as I saw the water. Bloody weed everywhere and wouldn't you know it seabreeze got it right for a change.

Started baitcasting but that was a no go, swapped to a heavier rod and a pink richter to stay over the weed then worked hard walking the beach for an hour or so before finally picking up a fish. Weed finally started clearing, dunno if the tide helped with that or what but it made things easier. Saw some bait fish getting harassed just 10 meters from shore, so back to baitcasting still on the heavy rod and got another that spewed up little baitfish once landed. Pressure was off so swapped back to a st croix trout rod I picked up in Canada that is bloody great fun on choppers. Rigged a silver halco twisty to "match the hatch" and the last fish put up a much better account of itself than the first 2 with some cool acrobatics. Not a big fish 40-45cm odd but much fatter than the last and a good way to finish.

Home by 10am with a couple for bait and one for a feed, bloody stoked. Hopefully can turn them into something bigger on Saturday night if things go to plan.

Exmouth Easter 2014 - soft plastic, queenfish and bonefish / permit, mack / tuna advise

Hi folks,

after having such a great time in Exxy in 2013, I've decided to go back for 3 weeks in late April / May 2014.

This time round I will be land based again for most if not all if the trip.

Rather than just do what I did last time, I've decided to change some things round a bit.

First of all, I'd like to try some soft plastic fishing rare than just using hard body lures and metal slices. Can anyone recommend some good soft plastics to take, and what size jig heads to use?

Secondly, I caught loads of queenies, but nothing over about 2 kilos, with most about 1 kilo. I caught most of these at the various accesses along the west side, between tantabiddi and the lighthouse. They were ll either on Halco Twisties or Storm Chug Bug poppers. This time I'd like to get one of the real big queenies. Can anyone tell me the best places to go for them or the best lures to use?

Third up, I'd like to chuck a fly at a permit or bonefish. Last time round I spent some hours walking around the Sandy Bay area down in the national park, but didn't see any. Was I in the right place?

Lastly, I'd love to hook up to a tuna or mackerel by sending a balloon out out. Do I have much of chance by doing this, and if so, where is the best place to do it?

Sorry for all the questions but Exxy is so far away (in miles and money!) that I want to make the most of the time I'm there.

Thanks!

tim

hey guys

my name is mike from perth wa and im new to the fourms :D

really been getting into the fishing recently, and im loving it!

my main fish i catch is bream but sad to say i have never caught any decent sized bream, nothing over 26cms

PLENTY of bream under 26cms though, was just wondering if i could have some tips and pointers on how to target the bigger ones?

Also i have never been beach fishing, i would love if i could go with someone someday (i will bring beers) and get the low down on beach fishing and land a fish from the sea, thats my biggest fishing goal.

anyway dont be scared to chat

Mike :D

Wapet creek stonefish

Just a reminder to be careful when fishing at wapet creek. We saw at least five of these little buggers in one small area at low tide. They were right at the waters edge at the closest access point to the airport. We moved one up on to the bank for some pics but you can see how good their camouflage is. Last pic shows the spines exposed.

Exmouth May 2013 Land Based Report

Hi Folks,

It's only been 5 months, but i've finally got round to writing up my trip to Exmouth in May 2013!

I left England full off hope and expectation, and made my way to Singapore. From here i transferred to Perth, where I arrived at 10pm. My flight to Exmouth wasn't until 6am, so i spent a rivetting time sitting in the internal flight lounge at the airport! I caught my flight to Exxy, and landed a short while later under clear blue skies and a warm sun. It only took 44 hours from a rainy England!

I picked up my hire car, and headed up to town. This journey didn't last long, as I couldn't resist stopping at Learmonth jetty to throw some lures. Despite still having all my warm clothes on from England, I spent a couple of hours chukcing out poppers and caught mangrove jacks, baby GTs and little queenies. I then made my way in to town, via the two tackle shops, and checked in at my basic, but the cheapest i could find, room at the Potshot Resort.

That evening i went back to Learmonth, spent some time spinning for not very much, and then decided to focus on sharks for the night. I was hoping to get a bite quickly, but it was several hours before I had a bite, and i missed two in quick succession.

After that trip, i then split my time between the gulf side of the cape north of town, and then at various spots on the national park side. The weather was pretty rough wuite a lot of the time, with heavy rain, and wild wind, but I managed to fish most of the time. On the east side, i spent two days on Bundegi flats, but only managed a few Charlie Courts here. Further up, i fished a lot of light lures between Bundegi boat ramp and the naval jetty. Along here I caught lots of small trevally of various types. I spent a huge amount of time popping for GTs (about 25 hours in this spot) around the naval jetty, but only had 2 hits, and they were on my first time trying!

Around the cape, I did more light lure fishing on the Oysters Reef areas, but just more small Trevs. I also did about 20 hours GT fishing here, but just one hit. So in all 45 hours fishing for 3 GT hits which all came off!

Further south from here, i fished most of the accesses all the way down to Tantabiddi boat ramp. I had my best fishing along this coast, and it was here i got addicted to fishing surface poppers. The amount of different trevs, plus queenies and long toms, was truly amazing.

I fished at Sandy Bay and some other areas in the national park a few times but I didn't do very well at all here.

I had intended to do a lot of fly fishing, but my fly rod was snapped somewhere on the journey out.

The only other fishing i did around the cape was for more sharks. I only had one bite in the daytime, but this turned out to be a massive spangled emporer! In the night, there were loads of sharks, and I had black tips to about 50lb, lemons to 100lb or so and one massive nurse shark. I also got spooled by some real monsters.

I've decided that Exxy is just too good so i'll have to go back! So i'm just starting to plan now. Targets are a massive Tiger Shark, big GT from the shore, lear to use soft plastics, and maybe even a bonefish and a permit on the fly! Here's hoping...

Lucky Bay

 Hi all

Im planning a couple of nights beach fishing up Lucky Bay south of Kalbarri at the start of November. I only have access to an AWD vehicle (mitsubishi outlander), does anyone know if I'll have problems getting to the beach? The only info I can find is that past halfway is 4x4 territory but ide be alright on dirt tracks just not soft sand.

Im not expecting to be doing much beach driving as ive been stuck too many times before

Thanks, Andy

First Mulloway

Its hardly worthy of a post but I am pretty bloody happy with myself.

I got down to Floreat Drain at 7.30 tonight. Not a car or fisherman in sight. Headed down to the beach. It was too dark to read the conditions so just perched myself next to the drain. Fished for 1.5 hours for not even a bite and then caught a 34cm trumpeter. Bummer...but it was the biggest trumpeter I have ever caught. Fished for another hour and then threw my three empties in the bin, packed up the rod holder and told myself one more cast. Boom a 48 cm tailor. Next cast caught a 52cm soapie. A few more bites after that then headed home at 10.30pm a happy man.

I realise it is not really worth a mention; but after hours upon hours of fishing for nought mulloway, I was pretty chuffed.
