Advice needed - North or South?
Submitted by Baitwaster on Tue, 2015-03-31 17:52Hey all. My GF and I are going on a 4WD/camping/fishing trek in early May for about 8-10 days and are tossing up where to go:
North to Kalbarri and Shark Bay
or
South to Augusta, Denmark, Walpole, Albany etc etc
We have a Quinnie 4.75 Coast Runner but haven't had it for long and while I have owned a little dinghy for a number of years, this is my first 'real' boat. I am leaning towards the South as there are (in my thinking) more places to go if/when the weather turns bad. I know the fishing is probably better North, but we are mainly geared at this stage to bottom bashing for bream/flatties/whiting etc. Plus I haven't beach launched before and am really wary of trying it out for the first time in an unknown spot (but I also say to myself - 'Just have a go and learn form your mistakes...')
Any advice or ideas?

Walpole at Easter
Submitted by Anytime Brad on Thu, 2015-03-26 20:48I am going to be staying at Rest Pont for a week over the Easter weekend. Is there anyone else going to be down there? Weather permitting I will be heading offshore for a bottom bash so if you are there and you see a White trailcraft with blue bimini come over and say hi. Brad

Shark Bay
Submitted by rodkarr10 on Fri, 2015-03-20 10:23Going to Shark bay at the end of next month and taking a 7 mtr boat.
I know the area is quite shallow and I have admiralty charts and plotter but was wondering if anyone had travelled the route between Denham and Cape Peron (via water not sand tracks) and could provide any additional info on hazards or maybe the best way to get there.
Will probably be camping at Bottle Bay or Gregories.

Jurien bay island
Submitted by Percula on Thu, 2015-02-26 21:04Hi guys heading to Jurien for the weekend. Looks pretty windy but was going to still take the boat and hide behind the island to do some snorkelling etc.
havent done it before so was wondering if it would be fairly protected from the wind there? East side?
Also is there some good squid ding spots in the bay?
Migt also do a quick troll as we'll behind the reefs if is protected enough.

Travelling with fishing gear
Submitted by robert1979 on Tue, 2014-12-30 11:01Hello,
Anyone flown recently with fishing gear? Was wondering if I could get away with (spooled) reel and lures in hand luggage. From a quick google search I am guessing no but Qantas website doesnt mention anything in its dangerous goods section. Although I imagine the airport security screening might have something to say. Not quite sure how a small fishing hook consititutes a dangerous weapon (nobody move! I am armed with a 2/0 treble!) and as for line, no more a weapon than a power cable or a belt.
Any recent experience from anyone?
Edit: Just called Qantas general enquiries. They said no problem taking spooled reels and small fishing hooks on a domestic flight as they are not considered dangerous!!! Oh well. I think I will just pack the bag, let them know at check in whats in it and prepare to check it in if required.

Landbased in New Zealand
Submitted by EL SYD on Mon, 2014-12-29 06:23Spent the month of November holidaying in a small coastal town of Tairua on the North Island in the corromandel., one of the more scenic places I have been.
The accommodation was cheap and executive in class, I would have to say I owned the view on my side of the island, simply spectacular. ( google Pacific Vista Tairua it should pop up in the home stays section
)
Great little butcher shop, homemade bacon and home killed meat. I don't know what Kiwis do to there sheep but they can keep on doing it...... Aussie lamb just taste like paper now
Great drinking spot was the local Game fishing club that opened at 4pm everyday and filled with the friendliest people I ever met.
Tairua is also the home base for the guiding outfit Epic Adventures, great bunch of guys.
Specifically went over there to chase Kingfish from the stones but according to the locals the warm water currents were a month behind and so was the warm weather,
Rained every day, even had hail storms lightning earthquake and a tsunami warning, but shrugged it all off and had a great time in this friendly little town,
Kingfish were only about at the local jetty in small numbers and were to well fed on the yakkas that lived there,
They even didn't hit the live baits that filled the sabiki jigs
But the snapper and kahawai were about in numbers every day and were great fun on the lighter gear.
Been home almost a month now sitting in stinking hot humid weather with bugger all rain on the horizon so wet season is looking pretty crapSo I thought I would share some pics to cheer me up

Camping/fishing in the south
Submitted by robert1979 on Mon, 2014-12-08 23:00Hi, just wondering if someone can recommend a nice place to beach camp and fish south of Perth (mainly since it will be a bit cooler) up to about 6hrs away max. Fishing is not as important as peace and quiet and somewhere nice to relax. Is there even anywhere you can legally camp for a 2 or 3 nights? Also not a seasoned 4wder so easy access preferred.
Cheers Rob

A trip with Epic Adventures
Submitted by EL SYD on Wed, 2014-11-12 05:33Well been in NZ over a week now, and the weather / fishing conditions have not been the best with the sea temps down from what they should be.
Staying in a small town on the east side of the corromandel, a place called Tairua, I have found some great LB spots but water temp is not in my favor, so as with every holiday you have a back up plan,
Mine was with the Guiding outfit EPIC.
I met the guide Owen at the boat ramp in the morning and he already had jigged up a couple of live bait tanks of yakkas, so all Andrea and I had to do was jump on board the stabi craft half cab?
Punching out in lumpy dark water with a pain in the arse wind I thought I was going to hurl my toasted vegemite sandwhich up, but the Paihia bombs held true to form,,,,,, really like these tablets.
Once out dropped a couple of jigs and gave it a good hard go but nothing.Mostly all live bait with these guys on the days out with them due to a shut down bite, only the lively of baits would get hit, but as the day wore on I did get some on the jig but no Kings
Got to admit that the baits were a lot easier on the body

Blown out at Abrolhos- :-)
Submitted by Rob H on Thu, 2014-10-02 19:16took a spin over for a couple of days, leaving right on the end of the front on the weekend.
Took a mate from work and his young bloke as all mine except Mac were doing other stuff thru the holidays.
Micks young fella (also Mick
) hadnt been out far in a boat before but handled it like a trooper despite weather being less than perfect
A bit of westerly sprung up as we were leaving and the swell was quite big requiring a turnaround at Hells Gates and out thru Eves instead.
We managed 18 knots until about 5 miles from the islands and did a bit of fishing.
Needless to say with two Micks and a Mac onboard there was some confusion when the captain was giving out orders
The sharks had dropped off a bit from last time luckily so the young blokes could have a bit of a crack.
Mac got a new "proper" rod and spin reel and was keen to try it out-first up a skanky sand snapper then a 5kg dhuie which he worked up himself-he was chuffed.
As soon as we got to the island, the 2 lads took off with the squid jigs and BOOM
The seals had moved back in and provided plenty of entertainment for us all as usual, following us into the water.
When one of my errant spear shots went thru a plate coral he sat literally a foot from my shoulder then swam down and grabbed the shank and tugged on it for me.
Im always wary, but its hard to see any malice from this small fella-while Mick was hanging off the back of the boat he came right up and looked over his shoulder without Mick noticing.
Later the two boys tied a fish frame to a bit of rope in the shallows and he shot in and had a tug of war with them.
I lifted it up to untie it while he looked on like a dog playing then took it from my hand and swam off to play with it!
Fishing on the second day, we couldnt get away from the dhuies-maybe 10 or more of which Mac accounted for more than his share up to 6.5kg
Went for a spear and a troll without anything to note
Following day dawned at 25knots SE and stayed that way all day then southerly so decided to just stay another day-just chilled out, had a troll for a few trout of which the two lads pulled in up to 55cm
Wednesday packed up and waited til mid morning for a great run home-turned 20+ NW after we got home.
The 2 boys had a blast and big Mick (who I worked with both fishing and O&G over the years) hadnt been back to the islands for a few years.

Submitted by bsir on Thu, 2014-08-21 07:51Hey Guys,
I have a trip to steep point planned in a few weeks time. We will be shore based only.
Was wondering what sort of lures are best to take (poppers, jigs etc)?
is it worth taking Soft plastics?
What kind of rod (was planning on 10ft beach rod and maybe a smaller flick rod)?
Any advise appreciated.
Thanks

Weipa trip - May 2015
Submitted by Porter on Mon, 2014-08-04 06:48G'day folks,
First post here, and looking for a few tips on tides/ locations around Weipa.
We're a group with a mix of flyfishermen and spinners - usually do Exmouth in April but next year something different.
We like to spend time off the beaches and the flats, walking and boat based, and planning to go wider for pelagics and bait balls. We have a boat so all set there.
Any pointers on areas to fish, states of the tide etc.
Cheers, Hank
