Holidays - Fishing Trips

So where's your destination?

Tea Tree Camp, Tamala Station

Well after years of thinking about and months of planning for it, and a very conveniently timed redundancy, we finally headed up to Tamala Station, Tea Tree bay on the 4th of May. 776km and 11.5 hours later after leaving home at 0401 in the morning, we arrived to a blustery 25 odd knots from the south west. Thankfully Tea Tree is a northern facing beach so it was at our backs though trying to find some protection on relatively flat ground, whilst maintaining our privacy (three other groups coming up later), we headed to the western end of the bay.

One and a half ours to setup the camper trailer (PMX 18 foot soft floor with semi off road, single axel trailer) and it was time to prep for dinner. Had to strap the tent to the car to give a little bit of protection and after dinner, we settled in for an early bed time.

Day 2, the wind was still blowing, strong. Decided to pump up the 3.3m Quicksilver Ducky to give it a leak check (after finding and fixing a few at home) though didn't get it wet due to the breeze. Fisheries took a drive down the beach to check us out and have a chat, surprising to see them to be honest, though after a quick look through the fridge and freezer to see lots of chicken, they were on their way. After being embarrassed that I hadn't had any fish, I went for a kayak to a spot where I found a school of silver bream swimming around and speared one which gave us a taste of the local produce. 40cm fish was the biggest one I had seen. Not much other life around.

Slightly later night admiring the sky and alcohol with the camper still pumping.

Day 3, the breeze had moderated to below 15 knots so Wife, deckie dog (6yo Cattle dog) 2yo daughter and I jump into the duck and we putted around the point to the west to see what was around. Drifted for squid though it was extremely shallow so we decided to go for an explore though the breeze picked up forcing us to head in. White caps by 10:00 and blowing the goats around by 11. Took a drive to Giraud Point to see what was up that way and check in at Telstra hill to get an update on the world.

Day 4 the remainder of our gang arrived (5 adults and 5 kids) with two Caravans and a camper trailer. Not a huge amount happened though more fishing buddies arrived. Breeze was starting to moderate so only one ratchet strap connecting the tent to the car...Took the duck out to catch some bait (Silver Bream) and managed one as they were extremely skittish. Threw in a line at sunset and landed a shovel nose at around 1830. showed the kids and let it swim away.

Day 5 three of us headed out looking for fish. We headed to the channel to the west which is clearly visible. Pinkie after pinkie and nothing else but pinkies....only they were 10cm long. Tried for squid again where we thought it was deeper though it didn't happen...

Day 6 spoke to a bloke walking past who gave is some info of people catching fish off the rocks to the west of us at sunset. Game plan was set. With the remaining bait, we 4 adults headed out after the kids went to bed, anchored in around 1.5m of water and after sitting for around 30 minutes it was on for young and old, well everyone got big hits with only my hooks setting. Landed three size pinkies, me with two and handing the rod to my brother for the last. We were jovial upon return though quickly disappointed to discover that the only 'sharp' knife was a 4 inch bait knife. After getting two reasonable fillets off one of the fish, another one got hacked, we decided to eat the third for brekkie the following morning

Day 7 quiet day around camp with a trip to Tamala Station to do a rubbish dump and collect wood. filled up the showering jerry cans. Went for a pretty big explore looking for more fishy spots and squidding again. Managed a few yellow tail which would go to bait.

Day 8 I was keen to do a steep point run though after hearing the track was pretty bad, I conceded that False Entrance was as far as I would get (wasn't keen to go alone and the group wasn't keen to go to Steep). Heading off at around 10, it was a 65km trip out to false. We looked at the blow holes and I looked for a fishing spot. Not much swell though no one else really keen on a rock fish so headed to the beach for lunch.
Lots of fish in the shallows at the northern end of the beach though not interested in anything we threw at them. Upon closer inspection they were mullet. Spent time shucking oysters and playing in the dunes. Back at camp, we had the first glass off evening

Day 9, Headed out looking for baldies. Went around the point to the west and headed south. Found plenty of very twichy fish though the boat developing its 4th major air leak of the trip, we weren't out for long. Water was bloody freezing! Managed to spear one after having plenty of shots. As soon as they see you, they are off. You just have to wait for them to stick their heads up again...
Headed out again in the evening for a fish. More fish this time with more favourable tide times. Brought home two though must have caught 20 fish. All on bait. I tried soft plastic, then bait on soft plastic for nothing.

Day 10 - final full day. Boat had developed more leaks so we stayed shallow. Took the wife, midget and dog for a run to the north to look at some other spots. Went over a heap more fish though with limited fuel, we just kept going. On the way back, once I was sure I had enough fuel to get back to camp, I had a go at some fish though didn't get anything. Boat back on the beach and packed up.

Over the trip we had four proper fishing efforts, two during the day and two during the evening. Only landed size fish (5 in total, around 50-53cm) in the evening. Around 1 hour after sunset, the fish were on the bite for about an hour and a half. Plastics and lures were useless. Fresh chunks of yellow tail were the way to go

Went spearing 4 times and landed three fish. Fish were extremely skittish and hard to find without a boat.

Tea Tree East is extremely shallow. Beach fishing is almost a redundant activity as at low tide there is no water for 100 or so meters. Even at high tide, it would only be 1m deep, 200m out. It is ideal for kids with plenty of sand. Take sand pegs as normal pegs are useless as the shell grit that makes up the beach is so large, the pegs don't really bind in. Most of my windward peg spots had three pegs in, at different angles....and I still strapped to the car..

Tea Tree west is rocky with small cliffs to the water. Better for fishing though not ideal for young kids. Not great for tents or camper trailers as you cant peg into the ground apparently.

One of the fellow FWers warned me of ticks though thankfully we encountered none though we did see a few mice. Feral cats must be a bit of a problem too as I saw one at night and I saw evidence another night.

Overall, I, and the other campers found this part of shark bay pretty baron. The seaweed seems dead and drifting over deeper water, there is nothing (I stuck my head over the side many times when drifting around to see if anything was moving). I assume it changes during the day though we were amazed how little there is around.

Anyone taking energetic dogs up, be aware that the shells cut their feet to bits. We ended up gaffa taping socks onto ours so she could walk around. That was just her running around the shallows.

On the way home we went to stop into Murchison House station but found it to be a dust bowl so headed to Anchorage caravan park in Kalbarri which was nice for a freshen up, before heading to Cliff Head though after the big swell, the water was brown so we didn't attempt fishing.

2350km later at home just in time for this nasty cold front on the weekend. Still packing up. Now all refreshed time to look for a job...

Below image
Orange = where we camped.
Red = Where we actively fished. Landed three yellow tail, plenty of small pinkes and a small baldie in the channel.
Blue = where we saw baldies/tusk fish. Motoring over them you see them though as soon as you are the water, the are gone.
Yellow = where I found plenty of Silver bream. A school just swims up and down. They had no interest in squid.
Pink = Where we fished at sunset to catch size pinkies. Anchored in around 1.5m of water and cast 10 or so meters away from the boat.

The weather up north...

Thought you perthites would like to see some different weather

All the way from Darwin to near Dampier it has been a glass off.

100 mile from Dampier and it's about 8 knots!

Good weather for a change at the islands

Family holiday - Horrocks or Port Gregory?

Put this up on the Western Angler forum a while ago but that forum seems to be slowly dying off unfortunately. Only 3 views in close to 2 hours. So will try here:

My wife and myself are in the process of planning a holiday to the mid west coast in January and want to get everything booked early with it being school holidays at the time. We're spending a week in Kalbarri, but I am hoping to do a couple of days in one of the smaller towns first to just kick back and relax before doing the touristy thing in Kalbarri. At first I was looking at Port Gregory, but then stumbled across Horrocks just south of there. Just wondering which of the 2 is more family orientated?
Obviously I'm in it for the fishing, hoping for a big tailor for myself and getting the kids onto whatever bread and butter species are around, but also need to keep my wife happy, so she doesn't notice the fishing as much. So what recommendations does everyone have?

Montes April 16'

So, after having an average trip to the Montes in March we decided to head back on neaps next chance we could. That turned out to be this past weekend. Weather was looking mint and neaps fell perfectly over the weekend.

Thursday saw us head from Tom Price to Fortescue for the night prepping up to leave first thing in the morning. Apart from the sand flies present, even though we camped a fair bit away from the mangroves, it was not a bad night, and after a few tins we called it a night and waited for the tide to come in to launch.

Friday morning, we were up at 4 to launch the boat with the high tide. Unfortunately the southerly was up and looking like it was gonna cause a hinderance, we decided to play it safe and park up inside Fortescue Island and wait for the sun to come up and have a crack at crossing then. Come 730 the wind had actually picked up so we decided to jump in and have a look around, plenty of little stuff but nothing worthy of shooting. After moving to one of the outer islands and having a dive for a couple crays and a nice trout, we decided to risk it and head over to the protection of Varanus then head up in the protected water. After a fairly painfull trip over being bashed around by the 20-25kn southerly and significant wind chop, we made it to the calmer waters and headed up to Home Lagoon to unload. Time for a quick arvo dive, which produced another couple of good trout and some more crays, then headed back to camp to have a cook up and a couple of tins.

Saturday, and unfortunately the southerly was still up and about. After a quick fry up for breakky, we headed out for a dive around Ah Chong to wait out the forecasted morning winds. Few more trout and chased out by some significantly hungry and agitated sharks, we headed out to some deeper water to chase some bone, with good success on trout, cod, decent bone and a nice chinaman. After a feed we headed out to look for some macks and dollys, only finding trevors and an inquisitive juvy whaleshark. Time to head back to camp to fillet before sundown. With the weather magic and the ocean looking like glass, the call was made to head out for a night fish. Being the first time out wide i had no spots, so we headed out north to 40-50m and hit a spot straight away, with reds, chinaman and horse spangos coming up every drop, enough to fill the eskly in an hour and head back in to chase some squid in the shallows before heading back to camp for the night.

Sunday,  with a slight southerly blowing we decided to risk it and after a fry up and filletting the previous nights catch we headed out to the south to see if we could find some lumps to bash on. With some good ground but no significant fish and the wind picking up we made the call to head in and have a dive. What a great call that was, as we found some new ground that produced 3 horse bone, a nice barra cod, a couple 700+ trout and a few more crays to round out the day, bagged out by 3 and time to head back for the final night and pack up ready to leave in the morning.

Monday, was as you can imagine, perfect weather, with no room left in the 3 fridges and no ice in the eskys we made a call to leave and after less than a 2hr steam back to fortescue we were out of the water and headed home.

EPIC trip!!

Monties March '16

Just a few pics from our recent trip over to the Monties at the end of March. Unfortunately we were too busy fishing to get a lot of photos. Camped at Home Lagoon, was pristine!! Weather was mint. Primarily speared but due to big tides and poor vis things were difficult. Still did fairly well and cant wait to get back on neaps...

Borroloola Barra at the Savannah Way Motel

Well after dodging extra long roadtrains and cattle truck tripples on a single lane road with crests and blind corners I finally made it home from my 980km roadtrip to the NT Gulf of Carpinteria.

Borroloola township was my stomping ground when I was a kid and had not been there for a few years, so with Darwins pitiful wet season and my local haunts written off, I decided to drive down to gulf.

The drive on its own is fun  ...... with all the beast jumping out of the bush trying to wreck your car...... happened to some unfortunate traveler later the same night. .....

Well I pulled up into the Savannah Way Motel,    formerly a construction company work camp back in the day when I used to be an employee  for them and was great to see  the upgrades of the accommodations for the traveling fishermen. ... aircon rooms  en`suite  secure vehicle parking and they will even let you was your car and boat down for the trip home.

My first day I spent scouting around at my old spots, only to find a new ore loading facility had been built cutting me off from my ledge........

And that the passing years of wet seasons had changed the river course and banks...... was looking like I had to find new ground.

So exploring was the plan of the trip, find new ground and access to the water.

Once I found the new tracks in and the creeks full of bait all I could get were saw sharks and reef sharks..... the reef sharks were great fun on the topwater lures..... cast out start twitching and a bow wave would form behind the lure and the chase was on with the shark sometimes on, or ending the chase at your feet in an explosion of water..... hours of fun.

But as most of you know I have some pretty lures and gear so this trip was also a test of the gear that I have and was having  some drama finding the barra.

The owner of the Savannah Way  took me out to some of his rockbars on the local rivers that surround the town, ( easy enough to find on your own Google Earth is your friend  )

Working some of the more expensive lures in the sharp and rough  bars with the thought of crocodiles present makes for interesting fishing.

Lots and lots of baby barra in the rivers about 30cm to 50cm good fun...... but not what I want to justify my lures with.... so with a not so good tide height and wrong time of day, I chose a spot away from the crew I was with and cast a lure out into the rapids,

winding and twitching...... bump bump on the rocks below.... snag... 250$ lure..... pull on line to break it off..... lure comes free.... wind twitch twitch

Lure comes to a stop..... dammit snagged again..... explosion of water... bucket mouth does the dance.... down the river it goes. ... around the tree it goes....spool on the Branzino is getting empty fast...... get into water, get around tree..... fight continues. .... around another tree, this time out in the river propper. ... take a step into water, slip and now I'm in up to my neck..... bit of a swim and some help from my fishing buddy  ( I  never fish remote alone )...... it's getting tired.... I'm  getting  tired.....

And then up she pops in all her fat silver 103cm glory...... slowly slide her over into a small grassed pool where we both relax.

Yes a great short trip and all landbased if ever doing the  Savannah Way track spend a bit of time in Borroloola and stay at the savannah way motel,  meet Charlie the owner and pick his brain for information on  the fishing, and at the end of the day enjoy a fresh cooked meal and a cold beer from the bar amd a sleep in the aircon...

Hope you enjoy the pics    cheers Syd

Abrolhos Easter

Quick report for our Easter trip, not much fishing, mainly an educational (Batavia) one for 4 of my kids, 8,10,12,14

Some may find it interesting, others not

Launched early Fri from Port Gregory, with a little assistance from my mate Tim who owns the caravan park there.
No probs, straight off the trailer and away.
Missus took trailer back to Gero as we intended to do a Tiki tour right through the islands.
Lovely run across, but with darkening skies in the distance, was expecting some rain.

Straight to Turtle Bay, there was a spare mooring but I chose to beach moor instead, did a bit of exploring and started reading the kids selected bits from "Islands of Angry Ghosts", the definitive Batavia story.
Toward evening the thunderstorms started, and we saw at least one light plane abort a landing attempt.

The rain and lightening was pretty close and heavy but we were chilling out in the cabin watching a movie.
Only drama was not being able to swag on deck.

Next morning we doddled of to the west of West Wallaby for a look then round to the bottom of West Wallaby intending to try and get to the fort.
Just too overcast to get through the shallows so we went to Long Island instead where most of the mutineers were hanged, walked the full length and speared a trout and baldy for dinner.

Motored round to the Batavia wreck site and found the spot (sand patch) where Ive dived before.
Kids were keen to snorkel but after about 10 minutes watching a couple of swells jacked up so we tonked off to Beacon Island (where most of the murders took place) and picked up a mooring.
Was VERY disapointed to find signs everywhere forbidding landing which was extremely annoying.
We did was most normal people would do then had a lovely feed plus some particularly gruesome passages from the book

Next morning after a big breaky we headed across to Easter group to catch up with Paul G and another mate who was at Leos.
Couldnt find either then discovered both had hightailed home due to a poor weather report.
Had no phone cover and poor VHF but managed to get VMR to call the missus and let her know all was ok.
Of course she shit her pants upon getting a call from Sea Rescue after several days of nothing...

We did a bit of exploring and snorkelling then headed down to Morley to moor on the beach-bugger, tide too low and couldnt get in plus no moorings free.
Went around to Wooded, same problem.

Fast fading overcast light and dropped the pick in 30+ knots, but wasnt happy so as it got dark, fk it, dived over and managed to set the pick in a limestone hole.
Not much fun as, soon as I lifted it we were off.
Then I discovered the most stupid Lowrance feature Ive seen so far.
The anchor alarm appears to have been designed by an imbecile.
The alarm has no feature to increase volume, and is about half the volume of the key beeps

I spent about 2 hours trying to find a way, I was worried it would not wake me so set clock every hour.
No phone cover to download an app so an uncomfortable night, though sheltered from chop.
Set alarm every hour to check.

Next morning woke to hear a few boats on VHF delaying heading in.
Several headed out and returned, but I was thinking best way would be to head to Sthn group then a better course with a later SW.
So off we went, checked in with VMR for the 15 mile crossing into 30 knots and off we went at 12-14 knots with no problem.
One or 2 flyers but kids just eat it up with foolish exuberance.

A few other boats came out after us also.
An hour later and we were at a mates place to wait for the breeze to go S or SW, but alas, the hospitality was too good and we stayed the night.
Pulled some cray pots for a few crays.

Girls got a bucket shower after 4 days of just a freshwater hose off.
Waited til lunchtime for the easterly to drop then headed in.
Covered about 120 nm for about 200 litres used, didnt use any of the extra stash I had aboard

Abrolhos Easter

Just got back from a short trip to the islands, bity holes was already half full of boats and it was cool and very overcast though not to windy.
A fair few camps already lit up so its gonna be very busy I reckon!

coral bay good friday

heading up to coral bay good friday should be in town sat morning, anyone else going to be in town? leaving following sat.

first time fishing out there so have done plenty of searching on here  (eyes are scrambled from reading) hoping some of it pays of.

might even try to sneak up the road to exy and have a look around

anyone fished CB lately any news or reports?

there is 3 boats in our convoy iam on a mates boat so the weather better be good

Saltwater Charters Perth

Well my short stay down in Perth is winding up.

caught up with the inlaws and mates and even got a boat ride in.

did some landbased flicking for small tunas of the rocks at north mole and the ammo jetty? But sadly all the bust ups were out of my casting range

met some great old fellas on the stones while watching the fish bust up, always good meeting other fishos .

Saltwater Charters. .... got to love these guys, if ever traveling solo down this way these guys can put you onto their boat without the need of your own group booking.

breakfast on board of bacon and egg muffins  while everyone is setting up and meet and greet.

all fishing gear and bait supplied, even jigs,

lunch also of BBQ sausages and patties with a salad choice for making your own burgers is supplied too.

Jigging for samsons was very slow for me.... first time ever ........ dammed sharks ruining the mood

however, on  the day the punters pulled in baldchins, blackarse cod, wrasse,  pig fish? , sweep?, snappers but sharked ones ...

some nice dhu fish and and even a beauty of a yellow fin.

Saltwater Charters provided a great atmosphere and fun day for everyone on board.

Cheers Syd

Montes Easter 2016

Anyone planning a trip over to the Montes for Easter?

Family trip to Skyshow and Rotto-no fishing at all!

Not much of a report but here it is anyway!

Came back from work after 5 weeks at sea going Dampier, near Timor, to Darwin, back to near Timor then Dampier and vessel up on the slip-home 21st Jan.

Had to do something but we had limited time as the school holidays were nearly gone.
Loaded the car/boat and family and headed down the coast to Lancelin then Perth, via Jurien where my oldest did a parachute jump!

Launched near Freo, and with the more than generous help of FW'er Fuzzy79 providing the parking and more-launched on Australia Day and cruised up to Sth Perth and anchored up to watch the skyshow.
Kids just played on the inflatables, dodging the pissed 2.5hp inflatable tender captains

Slept 7 of us on the Cruisecraft that night, sou easterly came up so moved down near Wesley College to sleep. Had a couple of clowns come whizzing around us but gone before I could say anything.
Funny in the morning as the Wesley College rowers came out and around us "morning sir" "morning sir"!
Was a bit of a squeeze but not a squash, good old Cruisecraft Outsider!

On the way back up river next day, we spotted to of these inflatables blown up on the rocks, middle daughter trooper that she is, jumped over, swam ashore and retrieved them-kids used them non stop at Rotto!

Just cruised around for a couple of days, missus and girls had a campsite but the weather was forecast to go to shit so managed to snag a cabin for last 2 days.

Lucky as it pissed down, mini tsunami, boat got hit by someone else who "forgot" to mention it when I helped him off the beach-twice.

Sunday morning, packed up and left at 7.30, in the river at 8, Alex (Fuzzy79) brought the car down to the ramp and we were rolling by 8.30.
Unfortunately the rolling stopped at Joondalup Shopping Centre, where the girls "had to" go shopping for a couple of hours...

Then got a call to head back to work 3 1/2 weeks early, cant say no so straight home unpack, repack and to the airport-at sea again...

Shark bay

Hey, I know there is heaps of info on shark bay on the site already, but as someone who has never been just wondering how much better a boat will make a trip there.

booked a week in Denham early October and will be doing bulk fishing but more as a family thing , not going hard to bag out every day.

I have a 21ft glass boat that normally follows me wherever I go but the land based fishing looks so good I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't even bother towing it up there.

quite happy catching flathead and tailor off the beach but will I kick myself if I get there and don't have the boat?

Also do you get patches of good low wind days in Sep to October?

cheers

Christmas Exmouth Landbased

Well the landbased started out awsome  with a fish a cast on the bludger trevs and barracuda and the odd small tuna ......

amd as always the wind changed and it turned crap....

lot of hard work after that.... not even a squid.

I did however I did drop some bigger fish on the heavy gear, and got to swim and test some new lures.....

lots of turtles nesting on all my spots, so took it easy with the fishing of those spots

sharks were patroling the shore line and started hitting hooked fish so gave that up also.... lol.

but other than that had a great time .

cheers syd

Christmas with Peak Sportsfishing

 Second go at this.

like I mentioned before, I had spent my Christmas break in Exmouth  where once again I used the services of Eddy from Peak Sportsfishing. .....

I met his new decky Muzza .... nice bloke.

weather not being the best for GT fishing .... lumpy as, making taking photos difficult so not too many pics from that day,

the remaining two days we decided  to chase the marlin,

what a great couple of days of fishing, was a first for my missus in the standup gear and with Muzz there giving instruction made life a hell of a lot easier and enjoyable.

here are some pics of my boat ride

Peak Sportsfishing Christmas Fish

Well the boat ride part of my trip in Exmouth is over.....

had a great couple of days  out on the water with Eddy and deckie Muzza.

With the wind not playing the game for a GT fish, making it too lumpy and wet to cast we called the GT thing off.

and decided to chase marlin.... has to be more relaxing than popping, put the lure spread out, sit in a bean bag have a drink a bite to eat, listening to music and waiting  for the cry of " Teaser..... Teaser " with your sandwich and drink coughing out your mouth....

it's game on.....

cheers to Eddy for a great day out, and Muzz for making  it come together out the back.

PS..... Exmouth butcher pics and landbased to follow ;)

Cape Riche caravan park

has anyone been there? Or know what the boat ramp is like

Esperance

Only recently heard the jetty has been closed indefinitely for safety reasons. What a bugger!

Heading down that way in a few weeks and had planned to spend a not inconsiderable amount of time fishing from it.

Oh well.

Anyone on here from down that way? Hoping to find someone to help out and maybe catch up with to try a few spots I haven't tried before.

Obviously going to hit up Woody Lake etc, and Bandy Creek. Will have access to a yak (not my own though) while I am there, which would make both of those spots a bit of extra fun.
But planning to cast from a beach or two as well. Just wondering if anyone down that way would be keen to help out.
Cheers.
