Broom - End of September 2014
Submitted by Ado1968 on Wed, 2014-07-23 15:50G'Day All,
I am off to Broome the end of September and am looking for some tips on places to fish.
Am taking my surf rod and a lighter rod suitable for up to 5kg bait/lure play.....
Can anyone provide me some background info and tips on locations ?
I am staying across from cable beach at the Palm grove Leisure Park so am keen to walk across th road and have a beer or two surf fishing watching the sun go down.
Am booking a day out fishing on the reef also.
Happy fishing all.

Abrolhos and soft plastics :-(
Submitted by Rob H on Sat, 2014-07-19 22:08We packed up and took another run over to the islands for 3 days, just me and my 2 young blokes this time, got back late yesterday evening.
The intention this time was to have a hack at the soft plastics having been shown a trick or 2 by Paul G and Abeldog, after finding some fish on bait.
We set out on wednesday arvo lunchtime, covered about 30 miles into a 5 meter swell then stopped on some new ground for a hack.
Highlight for the boys was a spectacualr mako display-I had a fish halfway up which got hit, went slack then tight and started coming to the surface out the side.
A big splash then 20 secs later a 2 meter mako must have hit the fish at the surface coming 2 meters out of the water spinning (20 meters away) but sending my sinker flying thru the air to hit the water like a bullet about a meter from the boat.
The boys were absolutely pumped but a little gobsmacked at the power they witnessed, prompting a 3 day stream of shark questions from Mac.
First up was a double header shark mac and charly court off the bottom-not mine, Cam got them.
Then a double header of pinks, Cams again and smaller one released
Then a baldy, not particularly big.
After that we had a start at the plastics, rigged up as I remember George showing us-vaguely
From there it went downhill. Cam and I both hacked away with them for a few hours, one on bait other on plastics.
We must be doing something wrong as they got smashed constantly and chewed through about 4 packs of Atomics and McCarthys without actually landing anything other than a couple of charly courts.
They got bitten off (120lb leader), and tailed constantly plus a few smashed by sharks and busted braid (maybe getting a bit old)
What are we doing wrong? To his credit Cam spent most of 2 days on the plastics while I used bait more of the time to get a feed on board due to a bit of shark trouble.
And he suggested next trip we just try plastics alone for a day (but guess who pays for them
Following is a few more pics for those who are interested-you can tell which ones Mac took, by the finger on the left hand side
Next morning dawned gloomy and quite windy (common over there
) so we had a cruisy morning of a good brekky, filletting from the day before and tying some rigs etc.
Headed out mid afternoon, and it didnt go to well with sharks getting stuck into us. Got a baldy and a bunch of charly courts (great eating if big enough).
Stayed out til the sun was going down and back to the anchorage in the twilight
when we got back, a seal had esconced himself in a comfy position and spent the next 2 days entertaining us with his antics, though I had to chase him away a couple of times.
He played, came right up to the boys like a puppy, chilled in the sun, threw fish frames around like a toy etc.
I am acutely aware of the dangers and the last thing I want is an injury 2 hours from help though.
Last day was windy again, so a leisurely brekky, pack up etc and left at lunchtime intending to fish then get to town on dark as a front was forecast to arrive overnight.
Fishing was steady, ending with about as varied a bag as you could expect-a coral trout, a coronation trout, a dhuie, a baldy, a humphead snapper and a blackarse plus the usual bunch of charlies.
Set off on the 35 mile run home at about 4pm in almost flat calm but the friggin plotter started playing up as soon as we set our course.
Its always in the back of my mind "what if something happens to me"?
Given the remote area we play in, Cam has learnt how to start and bring the boat around (having thrown a fender overboard) without my help should I go over and is quite capable with Mac leaning over to retrieve it.
In this case I wanted Cam to set the course and drive back to town but he had to steer by compass cos the plotter was playing up. He managed about an hour of it and I took over, its quite tiring steering by compass.
Turned out the plotter problem was just dirty contacts on the Navionics slot.
So that was the end of the trip, the boys said "the best trip ever", and it wasnt bad-they saw some new stuff, we had a cruisy time and came home with a feed.
Now its back to work for another month, starting out of Henderson doing a tow up north.

the Midwest coast
Submitted by Rob H on Sun, 2014-07-13 15:56after being hassled by the kids cos we "never do anything exciting", we threw some crap into the ute and bowled off up the coast from Coronations to look for somewhere to camp.
Chucked a line in and guess who caught a fish straight away?
Next morning, it was such a nice day that we just carried on up to Bowes and Horricks Beach.
Dogs found it a bit cold though
Towed the kids for 10km on the mat
Somebodies pride and joy, good restoration project for those with some spare time
Surf was good-left my board at home though. There was a report of a 4 meter white shark at Coros, the photo I saw looked more like a tiger about 2-3 meters but who knows.

Couple of days at the islands
Submitted by Rob H on Sun, 2014-07-06 00:20Hadnt been over to the islands with the kids for a while , mainly due to missing most of the holidays and long weekends this year so far.
This July holidays was looking a little dodgy as well due to the older 2 girls sporting commitments, so I was watching the weather as the weekend got closer and umming and ahhing on thursday whether to go or tow the boat to Kalbarri instead and camp in the river.
Last minute on thursday, weather looked too nice so packed and launched thursday arvo for a night run to the Abrolhos-just me and 4 of my kids.
Launched at 5pm and out of the marina at 5.30
Cray pots are a concern but most boats have already pulled out, so off we went with the intention of doing a bit of night fishing as well.
It got dark almost straight away but was abeautiful evening so 22 knots was easy.
When we had 25 miles under our belt, we had a few drops on marks, picked up heaps of sweetlip and about 8 dhuies all around the 50cm size, all released (kept some sweetlip, too tasty).
Rolled into the anchorage at 9pm, all the kids except Mr 9 (Cam) asleep.
Couple of coldies enjoying the peace and quiet then crash out, only to be woken at 6 by the boys dragging the squid rod out.
The usual cooked brekky of bacon eggs fried toast etc
Ella plugged her ipod into the boat stereo, only to get this message-hmmm not sure what to do about this....
Nor easter was blowing about 20 knots but the male crew members were keen to get some fish-the freezer at home was empty and needed stocking up
The drift was pretty fast so it was an effort but we managed our bag in a couple of hours, Cam got a dhuie about 8kg in 30 meters which he pulled up himself while I dealt with a shark.
I got another a little smaller as well plus a few medium pinkies, smaller baldies etc.
Now-its been a constant amusement to me, how kids manage to amuse themselves in the absence of electronics.
In this case they decided that it would be a good idea to disect the dhui remains. Consequently about 2 hours was taken up by removing the eyeballs and parading them around.
another day gone, evening spent by the kids running around with the spottie checking out the crays etc in the shallows.
Next morning, squiding again along with the insistence of disecting the catch as well-then we had it for breakfast entree
Cam proved himself to be the master of coral trout at the jetty, getting a succession of small ones on lure and releasing
Packing up then looking at the expected 20 knot NE breeze, we took off for a short fish before heading for home due to the forecast strong NW'er on sunday.
Despite the strong drift, the fish were hot on the bite and had our bag in about 45 minutes-nothing outrageous, just pinkies and baldies-Cam did most of the damage again
Could only make 16 or so knots at first but the wind progressively dropped away to a glassoff at the last 15 miles
Saw heaps of whales on the way in as well.

Augusta marina completion / update
Submitted by scano on Tue, 2014-06-17 19:47I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on the progress of the new marina / boat ramp facilities being built in augusta down south?
is it open for public use as yet or am I living in dream land?
i was down there about 6 months ago and it looked to be 80% completed but as we all know these things are always delayed and take time.
any update or info would be great

quick Abrolhos trip
Submitted by Rob H on Tue, 2014-05-13 19:15headed over yesterday morning and back this arvo, helping a mate close up the camp.
Plus a bit of recreation.
Took buggerall pics as usual.
A bit of spearing, though it was left mainly to the younger blokes, swell was up so I chased around as anchoring was a bit hazardous (plus I left my wetty at home)
One pot this morning, plus few tossed back topping up the bag limits

Peak Sports Fishing
Submitted by EL SYD on Thu, 2014-04-24 14:07managed to get some time away from work so took on a 3000 odd km road trip down to Exmouth, Eddy from Peak managed to get a day out on the water for me with my specific hit list of a GT on a special lure and test out some rods for casting,
For some reason I always seem to cop the bad weather, WA windy always lived up to its reputation turning up the breeze for me..
a lot of hard work but we found where the Gs were hiding and the old broken elbow held up to some GT fight time,, spewing i dropped a good cobia that I had to tease with the lure to get him to bite and only to lose it at the boat.
after the fight with the Gs the elbow had enough, and i asked Eddy what were the chances of getting a Ruby?
the dredlocked man just smiled and said no problem,
we motored out to the grounds where a couple of boats were giving the bottom a bit of a bash, we found our spot and away we dropped on the electric hit bottom nibble nibble kick it into gear and we are on, a bit of winding to assist the electric and up pops the target fish , a beauty of a ruby.
it is a real shame these fish cannot be released, they are a beatiful fish.
anyhow here are some pics.
cheers syd
will'post up the landbased later

Thoughts on rotto Friday/saturday
Submitted by Josh on Wed, 2014-04-23 18:16Gday guys,
Anybody heading over to rotto for Friday/Saturday?
It would be our first time, and with the conditions on seabreeze looking ok,
swell all about one m and the wind for friday being about 10 knots all day, then picking up to 15 overnight till 2pm where it is forecast to drop down to 5 knots for the rest of the arvo.
Might just have a little to healthy respect for the ocean, anybody else heading over?
Would be leaving from hillarys, and leaving the car in the carpark overnight.
My other thought is that the wind on sat arvo, although forecast as low is westerly, would that be super lumpy on the way north?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Also in terms of sleeping onboard the boat was just thinking of going into a bay and claiming a bit of beach to back anchor onto the beach.

Kimberley Trip Report April 2014
Submitted by outdoinit on Tue, 2014-04-22 21:13Hi All
We have just got back from a Kimberley trip, that we decided to go on at last minute.
So the trip was discussed over a drinks a few weeks earlier and the wheels were put in motion.
Last year we completed our first ever trailer boat trip out on northern waters and really enjoyed the experience..
On this trip we left from Derby and done Cone Bay, Strickland Bay, Graveyards and Horizontal Falls before heading back to Derby.
See below link to last years report..
http://fishwrecked.com/forum/full-derby-trip-report-lots-photos
So This year we decided that we would explore all new areas.
The trip was planned out with our launch to start from One Arm Point, which had its own challenge just getting over the 86kms of rough dirt road.. ( Anyone whos has driven that road knows exactly what I am talking about)
From one arm point (and a wet rainy start) we planned to head across to Silicone beach (Approx 60 Kms) pull up there unload the dingy off the boat and go ashore to stretch the legs. Lovely Spot and best beach in the north hands down..
From there we headed to the famous Croc Creek for the night, The next morning we headed into silvergull creek to say hi to the new people manning the hut.. (Mal & Shelly)
We headed off from silvergull around to Dog Leg Creek to top the boat up with Fuel, we took a total of 150 ltrs of the 200 ltrs ordered on board.. (Cost of $3.50 per Ltr)
But better than not being able to get any at all..
Later that afternoon seen us pull up at the Horizontal water falls and spent the night there..
From the Horizontal Falls it was all new ground for me, over the next week or so we went to Raft point then went 22kms up the Sale river and spent a couple days there.
From the Sale River we went across to Montgomery Reef and WOW what a place, We had a visit from True North in all its glory, Tenders, Helicopter and people going every which way...
They were amazed that we were even there in our little tub and every person onboard was taking photos of us as they cruised past..
We stayed a night at Montgomery Reef and the next morning the Easterly was blowing, which made the trip back to Dog Leg Creek for the rest of the fuel, very slow and a bit scary at times..
This trip also coicided with our biggest tide of the trip.. (High was 11.4 mtrs and the Low of just 1.2 mtrs in a 6 hr period, so 10.2 mtrs of total movement) Not for the faint hearted..
Over then next couple of days we worked our way back to One Arm Piont and then the big drive home again..
It was an excellent trip with little to no incedents and thourghlly enjoyed by all..
Below are a few pics of the trip..
Apologies for the lack of fishing photos, we did catch Jacks, Barra, Threadfin, Fingermark etc but very slack on the photo department.. Most time just forgot to take the camera..

Exy bound
Submitted by Tank on Mon, 2014-04-07 20:36Well family trip next week heading to Exmouth for some RnR with the family and the rest of WA (no doubt). Tried to convince the wife to take two cars (one with camper one with boat) couldn't get that over the line...I will tuck the boat up give it a hug and with a tear in the eye take the long drive from Wickham to Exy. So guess it is landbased fishing for this one and his boy.
Looking forward to the relax thats for sure...a visit to the local bakery will be on the cards a call in to see Rusty...window shopping at the local tackle stores (thats what I tell the banker) and some quality family time.
Hopefully the only wind is in camp from too many beers and the fish play the game or too when giving it a crack.
So for all those heading away for the school holidays...safe travels, fond memories mixed with a good laugh and a cold ale or two.

What fishing charter\destination do you recommend
Submitted by MartyG on Wed, 2014-03-12 22:57G'day, I'm from Adelaide and hoping for some advice. It's my brothers 60th birthday coming up December and we want to arrange a WA fishing holiday/charter for 4-5 days for him his two sons and a few mates. Our budget is about $3000 - $4000 per head for 6-8 persons including airfares and accomodation. We would like to do a mixture of reef fishing and trolling for mackeral and sailfish.we are open to suggestions to destinations time of year... Just hoping some local knowledge will save us from ending up with dodgy operators or booking the windy season.
Cheers
