Hey guys,
I am looking at changing career paths and looking to do something within the marine industry.
I am currently a qualified Roof Plumber and have learnt many skills within the building industry but i would prefer to do something i really have a passion in.
If anyone knows of any career or job Opportunities would be greatly appreciated if you could either PM me or reply to this post.

Lots of work for engineer class 2 and 3 as well as for watchkeepers with DP tickets also for ROV pilots
any of these jobsake in excess of 250 000/pa in oil and gas
getting the tickets is a bit of time and money
deckies on about 140 plus project bonuses about 100/ day. U need rigging tickets, certificate in safety training, white card, MSIC card, AMSA medical and 2.5 yrs experience in a similar role. Sadly with barrow winding down, Wheatstone as well there is a lot of blokes and not so many jobs. At least it's 4 weeks on 4 weeks off

Shit shark1 I've got years of experience (mates ticket, working offshore/foreign going) full DP cert where can I earn $250 grand a year? The masters of the largest rig tenders up north aren't pulling that. Everyone has a story of huge money around and yes there is big cash for construction (which as you have just said is winding up). Once that happens there will be heaps of blokes on the beach and sadly I think it'll be the blokes running round on all those small work boats that'll be hit the hardest.
MetroLBfisher have a chat to Chellenger TAFE and see what courses are available. To work the deck on the larger commercial vessels you'll need to be an IR (integrated rating). The courses are run in freo, AMC Tassie and Newcastle. From memory it's a 14 week course and then 9 months seatime to get your IR ticket. From there you can obtain more seatime and sit higher tickets.

Butters. I know what I get paid look at the offshore oil and gas EBA. If u ain't making it, u working for the wrong company or not being paid as per EBA. Gorgon and Wheatstone both pays these rates. Look up the green fields EBA agreement

Mate I've got job security, good vessels (the big red ones) and most importantly my leave with my family which I think is more valuable than chasing the big bucks.
Yes we are working under the offshore EBA. How many vessels in this industry on the Aussie coast aren't paid as per an EBA????????
As I said those smaller vessel around Barrow will head off the coast once the contraction stops, then the big bucks will also dry up. Unless lads upskill there will be unfortunately a lot of blokes chasing work.

I work O/S in oil and Gas both Exploration & Construction and the money is no where near that unless your a day rater ( years of experience & in demand for jobs like ROV ) or construction where you have to be prepared to swallow to get in and remain there.... My old man works on the Tugs up on Gorgon and isn't making 200k let alone 250 so lets not try and polish a turd here...
Metro I agree with butters, you need to do some courses to get a leg in, if you want to go down the IR road you will still need to take penis in mouth but perhaps not swallow & have $30k to be away from work for the 3 months whilst at Tafe in Tas or Freo & pay the 20k for the course... Other alternatives are the 6 day STCW95 $2000 which may get you a foot in the door.... A mob called GO marine have hired guys with just that ticket... CSTP, HUET are others.... Have a think about which way you want to go and then repost or pm some of us in the industry and I myself would be happy to give you some HR contacts to help you out but there is no guarantee....Anyway its a good industry obviously but don't get sucked into the 250k rubbish... I know you wont...

ha ha yeah mate I gotta agree with tim and butters.....unless you're a gangway hopper who sells his leave an IR cant earn $250K even as a casual on 117% with PAB.
Don't get me wrong the money is pretty good but not that good.
Speak to Challenger tafe and see if there is and spots for self funded entrants....if you get through some companies will give you sea time depending on what vessels they have at that the time.
Be persistent as there will be plenty of knock backs.

as far as I see, the IR's
as far as I see, the IR's arent on % grading as officers are so makes little difference whether vessel is 96% or 117%
But itd be difficult for anyone to set out a career change from scratch aiming for $250K unless already having a trade or seatime to begin with.
Having said all that Shark isnt that far off the money for a casual senior officer on 20% loading on a 100%+ vessel, but not an IR.

Don,t forget also that things in the maritime industry are looking shakey at the moment. There may be job losses for those already established within the industtry.

Gangway hopping is a problem in the industry, it always seems to happen at times when there is heaps of work around.
As for reading the EBA, I have many times. I hear stories all the time of what people earn., to me it always seems to be a pissing contest when people start going on about how much they earn.

As a lot of ppl have said above, you're not going to just jump on a boat & earn that kinda coin.. But i know where i am currently, there are a lot of whispers about a few "low" times in the near future. I work for the world's 2nd largest drilling contractor & even we are already offloading rigs to get ready.
Just a friendly idea, be cautious of what promises are made before you jump into the unknown. Id imagine the last ones to join a vessel will be some of the first to leave too.

I'm hearing you but regardless of that if I was in Metro's position like I was 10 year ago I'd still do whats required and put myself in the best position available... As I'm sure you'd know there is alt of drilling happening down here right now, BP not far away from Bight drilling, Woodside are in talks with Atwood Oceanics to get another "Osprey" type rig built to do the Browse work with potentially 20 years drilling there... Its tricky drilling there, we did a couple wells for Total in the same area and its a mongrel, between Shell ( prelude ) Inpex & Browse there is potentially 20 years drilling there alone for 3-4 rigs... Anyway I guess my point here is to remain optimistic and get your self out there....

I agree with ya there mate.
If i were to start again, the only thing that i would change, would be my hesitation to make the jump. Any which way, with anything thou- take caution when doing so. Im on a Newbuild up in the south china sea and we have got clients lining up at the doors to sign contracts. But with the amount of gear coming out of the shipyards, the client has more pulling power regarding dayrates. I reckon the dayrates of 500k+ are coming to an end, and some of the drilling companies that cant afford to run a rig for less than repayments may stack them? :-/
I havent worked back in local waters for a few years now, but if the begining of the GORGAN project was anything to go by, the amount of work down there will go for many years to come like you say. Im not in the loop as much as yourself with whats happening down under thou. Where do you call home for the time you in/out?

If you have a look at the different schedules in the eba you will see IR pay is at 100% 107% or 117% depending on the vessel. Its listed as a figure not a percentage, but when converted thats the percentages you end up with.
Not sure what a master would be getting but yeah its prob up there....
I think the nextt 18 months should be ok, seems like plenty of work around.

The old man has been an IR since doing his ticket at the ripe old age of 57 in Launceston 5 years ago and has been pretty right with work right through mostly on the Gorgon towing barges up n down the coast... He's stoked, most cash he's prolly ever had!!

depends what you wanna do
some blokes don,t want the money and opt for lifestyle, such a fishing guide. An awesome way to make a living, meet people, hone your fishing skills and get pissed lots....But has some draw backs..Living remote, away from family/friends/wife/kids for extended periods, the climate can be cruel and can effect you over long periods of time and getting smashed off by big fish is the pits but apart from that, it can be good.

I am a chef on a pipe later at present, been working offshore for 10+ years. Finally got a break on a pipe layer and the coin is ridiculous. But won't be there forever so paying debt and saving for the future.

For me after 14yrs I was made redundant 6 months back after 4 rounds of job cuts.
70 odd guys and I was the 3rd last out, took the payout and picked up another tug job 3 on 3 off.

Just come off 3 years on wheatstone hook up and commissioning offshore, looking bleak out there.
Inpex and prelude half way done by sounds of it. Talks of Pluto 2 starting soon. Pipe lays have slowed done, chasing maintenance contracts now in the bass strait.

I did a pre=employment medical today in Bunbury for a quick pipelay off Karatha, my first job back offshore since the Inpex pipeline ( i havent been bothered chasing it in recent times )
Anyway....
I still have a valid HUET ticket but for some reason they wanted a full HUET style medical.....
This included a fucking prostate check!! Never in my time have i had a prostate check for an offshore gig and when i say a quick job i'm only talking maybe 3 weeks for me total and they want to feel inside my arse!!
Anyway the little Indian Dr couldnt find his lube so he made me kinda crouch on my side while he spread my ass and made me cough!!!
What the fuck has my freckle winking at him got to do with me being fit enough for 3 weeks work!!!
I still cant believe it!!
Perhaps he thought i was applying for a quick job with the Navy??

Used to tell new deckies they had to submit to that so doctors could measure the pressure they exerted so they wouldn't crap themselves if things got too rough for them.
Some of the answers we got were that if that was going to happen you could stick the job where the doctor was going to put his finger.

Talking of offshore medicals
My youngest went in for his offshore medical a couple of weeks back and part of that was to do some sort of press up and hold the position for several minutes. Looks like times have changed and Dr's are making up their own criteria of what should be in the offshore medical as I have had many medicals in the past 35 years for working offshore including diving medicals and there has never been anything like Timboon or my son have had to go thru. My last HUET medical was easy as.

Just checked the OGUK medical form
In there there is a question on rectal examination, why I'm not sure. You would need the same exam for going offshore for 1 day or 1 month regardless.

A few years back I was at a meeting where medicals were discussed and it was brought up to the collective Offshore employer group about questions on family history.
Contractors on Barrow were asking for family history of drug and alcohol abuse/issues.
Even the major employers present agreed that such questions were intrusive and not required and should not be answered.
Whether they actually passed that on to their contractors I dont know.

I was wondering who was the cause of this rather impressive dig up of an old post Rob.. ha ha
As ya know. I'm still floating around with the same mob (still cant get over the shock that we took over Attwood, but that's another story) but I have taken a decent hit to the pocket and come back to land based (shipyard) to oversee the construction of a rig as compared to staying offshore.
We are sending a rig back down to Aussie again soon, but as the world just witnessed last week with contracts getting canned as a rig in on tow to the first location, anything is possible.
Lot of clients now are wanting ppl to go back for the full HUET due to the new styles of "rebreather"
We have always joked bout the old "date check" but never met anyone that was serious. And I have worked with some ppl well over the age that they should eb offshore.. ha ha
